Total Drama Random Island

Chapter 24: Are We There Yeti?

Last time on Total Drama Island!" announced Chef Hatchet. "These useless campers got swept away by a rainstorm and ended up on a deserted island! The germophobe sailed alone into the confessional and found many strange things, like a dinosaur skull! The goth built a raft and let the punk ride with her, which left the bomba all alone! That same bomba found a treehouse where they all ended up confessing their sins! That's when they came up with a genius plan to find out who was making the fire! But all they found was the secret location of our production team! Yeah, I'm doing the recap! You got a problem with that?! Since Chris is off hosting some fancy awards ceremony, I'm stepping in as the host! But guess what?! I'm not happy about it either! So sit down, shut up, and watch tonight's episode of TOTAL DRAMA... ISLAND!"

After the opening song, we moved to a clearing somewhere deep in the forest. Two bunk beds stood in the middle of the clearing, holding the four remaining campers, fast asleep. It was early morning, and the sun was just beginning to rise. Duncan slept peacefully until a fly disturbed him, then it got eaten by a frog. A squirrel came and affectionately brushed Dave's face, making him sneeze. Several flies buzzed near Leshawna's face, and she unconsciously swatted them away. Finally, Gwen woke up on her own.

"What the-?! Where the heck are we?!" said Gwen, completely lost.

Dave, Leshawna, and Duncan woke up with a jolt.

"We're in the woods!" shouted Dave.

"How the heck did we end up in the woods?!" exclaimed Leshawna.

"Chris?" said Gwen.

Suddenly, the sound of a helicopter could be heard, followed by Chef Hatchet's voice.

"EVERYBODY CALM DOWN!" shouted Chef.

He arrived on a rope ladder hanging from the helicopter. He climbed down while holding two backpacks.

"HOW YOU GOT HERE IS NONE OF YOUR BUSINESS!" said Chef Hatchet.

Chef gave a thumbs-up to the pilot, signaling him to go higher.

"What happened to Chris?" asked Gwen.

"What happened to Chris is none of your concern! I'm in charge today! And I'm going to make you regret being born!" Chef grinned cruelly. "Your mission is to find your way out of the forest and back to camp, or die trying," said Chef Hatchet.

"Wow, you've lost it. We'll never make it," said Leshawna.

"It's not like this is the first time he's abandoned us in the woods," said Gwen.

"Here's how it's going to go: Team 1: The germophobe and the punk. Team 2: The goth and the bomba," said Chef.

After that, Chef Hatchet threw the bags at them.

"Everything you need is in these bags! But each bag contains different supplies, so choose wisely! Once you do, head north until you reach base camp! The first team to touch the Immunity Totem wins! And here's a tip! You might want to set up camp before nightfall! Because once the sun sets, you won't be able to see your trembling hands in front of your terrified face!" said Chef.

Chef paused for a moment to enjoy the terrified look on Dave's face.

"Unless you have night-vision goggles! But you don't!" said Chef.

Chef waved a pair of night-vision goggles in front of the campers' faces before attaching them to his belt and laughing cruelly.

At that moment, Duncan jumped on Chef, begging him not to abandon them.

"Please, Chef, don't leave us here! We'll never survive!" said Duncan, grabbing onto Chef.

"Pull yourself together, soldier," said Chef, pushing Duncan away.

Confessional: Leshawna

Duncan has plenty of flaws, but he's not a coward. He's definitely up to something bad.

End Confessional

"NO, DON'T LEAVE US HERE! WE'RE GOING TO DIE! THERE ARE BUGS, DIRT, GERMS, AND GRIZZLIES OUT THERE! YOU CAN'T DO THIS!" yelled Dave, panicking.

"If I were you, I wouldn't be worried about a grizzly but about our real monster: the Sasquatch," said Chef.

The helicopter descended again, and Chef grabbed the rope ladder before being lifted away.

"GOOD LUCK, TROOPS! TRY NOT TO DIE!" laughed Chef.

"THIS ISN'T LEGAL! YOU CAN'T DO THIS!" shouted Leshawna.

"Take it up with the network's lawyers," said Duncan before grabbing Dave and running off.

"Where are they going? They won't survive alone," said Leshawna.

"Let's leave them. We need to focus on finding camp," said Gwen.

"If I remember correctly, Chef said camp was north," said Leshawna.

"That gives us a clue already. Now, I just hope we have a map in our bag," said Gwen.

She checked the bag but found no map, only a compass.

"This is better than a map. Look, it points north," said Gwen.

"Nice job, girl. Let's get moving," said Leshawna.

Meanwhile, the boys were still running.

Confessional: Duncan

To be honest, teaming up with Dave isn't ideal. If we run into a grizzly, it'll definitely eat me first. Leshawna would've been a better choice.

End Confessional

"Duncan, where are we going?" asked Dave.

"I just wanted to scare the girls!" said Duncan.

"You scared me instead," said Dave.

"Don't worry. We'll get out of here fast thanks to this," said Duncan, showing Chef's night-vision goggles.

"You stole them from Chef! I knew begging wasn't your style," said Dave.

"Alright, let's see what we've got…," said Duncan.

Duncan dumped the contents of the backpack onto the ground. He found a map, a can of bug spray, a sleeping bag, and a pair of binoculars.

"Yes!" shouted Dave. "Bug spray!"

"And a map! We'll be out of here in no time!" said Duncan.

"Uh, not to be a downer, but a map isn't much use without a compass," said Dave.

"It's fine. I'll figure out where we are…" said Duncan.

"Yeah, that worked out great last time," said Dave sarcastically.

"Okay… The sun rose over there… So… Camp is that way!" said Duncan, pointing.

"You sure?" asked Dave, looking at the map. "I think the sun rose over there…" Dave pointed 90 degrees in a different direction.

"I'm telling you it's this way, so let's go," said Duncan, walking off.

"He's so stubborn," said Dave, following Duncan.

Meanwhile, the girls kept moving.

"You think we'll run into their monster?" asked Leshawna.

"I think it's just another trick to scare us. A Sasquatch is way too dangerous," said Gwen.

"Yeah, you're probably right, but this feels too easy," said Leshawna.

"Now that you mention it, we should stay on guard. Chef loves messing with us," said Gwen.

Confessional: Gwen

I never thought I'd say this, but I miss Chris. Honestly, anyone would be better than Chef.

End Confessional

As the girls followed the river, the boys climbed a sixty-meter cliff. By the time they reached the top, they were both covered in dirt.

"Ugh! I'm filthy!" complained Dave.

"I thought you toughened up!" said Duncan.

"I did! But that doesn't mean I like it," said Dave.

"Let's see if we can spot camp from here," said Duncan.

Duncan raised the binoculars to his eyes and scanned the horizon.

"Hey, it's the girls! They're going the wrong way," said Duncan, smirking.

"It's typical. Girls have no sense of direction," said Duncan.

"Idiot, we have a compass pointing north," said Leshawna.

"You're the ones going the wrong way," said Gwen.

Duncan checked the map and realized they were heading in the wrong direction.

"Dammit," said Duncan angrily.

"I told you, if you had listened to me, we wouldn't be in this mess," said Dave.

"Okay, okay, we can still use the river to catch up," said Duncan.

"You're asking me to jump into a probably filthy river, from a cliff!" said Dave.

"I'm not asking you anything," said Duncan.

He grabbed Dave and threw him.

Confessional: Dave

I have a lot of respect for Duncan, but he's seriously starting to annoy me by never listening to me.

End Confessional

While the boys followed the river, the girls stopped to eat. They sat on a rock.

"Gwen, I think Duncan is up to something," said Leshawna.

"What are you talking about?" asked Gwen.

"That stunt he pulled earlier, when he begged Chef, that's not like him at all," said Leshawna.

"Now that you mention it… What do you think he's planning?" asked Gwen.

"I have no idea, but we should keep an eye on him. We can't let them win," said Leshawna.

"You're right. If we lose, one of us will be eliminated, and the next one will probably be the other," said Gwen.

"We're on the right track. The boys will have a hard time—" Leshawna started.

But just as she was about to finish her sentence, the boys could be seen swimming in the river, passing the girls.

"Girls, maybe you should talk less and run more," said Duncan.

The girls immediately got up and started running.

"We need to catch up to them fast!" said Leshawna.

"Yeah, but they're swimming way too fast," said Gwen.

"Damn it," said Leshawna.

"I might have an idea… Let's set a trap for them," said Gwen.

"How do you plan to do that?" asked Leshawna.

"Don't worry, just leave it to me," said Gwen.

While the boys reached the end of the river, the girls set up a trap. Gwen knew that Duncan loved money, so she placed a $20 bill with a string nearby.

"Awesome! Free money!" said Duncan.

"Wait, wait. Why would there be a bill just lying in the middle of nowhere?" asked Dave, hesitant.

"I don't know, but I never say no to free money," said Duncan.

"I'm telling you, this is a bad idea," said Dave.

As soon as Duncan grabbed the bill, the string tightened, pulling him upside down.

"You were right! It was a trap. Now let me down!" said Duncan.

"It's not like I didn't warn you!" said Dave, a bit annoyed.

Dave set his bag down and climbed the tree to cut the rope. But at that moment, the girls stole their bags with all their supplies.

"DUNCAN, THEY'RE STEALING OUR BAGS!" shouted Dave.

Dave quickly cut the rope and started running after the girls, but he couldn't see them anymore.

"Crap, our stuff!" said Duncan.

Dave felt his anger rising—the many times Duncan hadn't listened to him.

"This is all your fault!" said Dave.

"Huh?" said Duncan.

"If you would just listen to me and stop being so stubborn, we wouldn't be in this situation!" said Dave angrily.

"Don't talk to me like that! I'm the reason you're still in this game," said Duncan.

"There you go again, making it all about you," said Dave.

"You know what? Let's just finish this challenge quickly so I never have to see you again," said Duncan.

"Fine," said Dave.

The two set off again to retrieve their belongings. The road was silent—the former friends were both still angry at each other.

Meanwhile, the girls continued on their way.

"We got them like amateurs," said Gwen.

"Yeah, it was actually pretty easy. But let's not forget that Duncan is sneaky—he'll want revenge," said Leshawna.

"He's so clever and intelligent," said Gwen.

"Wow, are you crushing on the bad boy?" asked Leshawna.

"What?! No, no, it's just that… he's cool," said Gwen.

"It's okay, Gwen, you can tell me. We're friends, after all," said Leshawna.

"Okay, fine… I admit he's kinda cute. Plus, we like the same things. I think I have a little crush on him," said Gwen.

"Don't worry, sis, your secret is safe with me," said Leshawna.

"But I don't want my feelings to get in the way of the competition. Not like all the other couples here," said Gwen.

"Then wait until after the show, find him, and tell him how you feel," said Leshawna.

"Yeah, you're probably right," said Gwen.

Meanwhile, on the boys' side, they had spotted the girls and were preparing to set a trap for them.

"Here's the plan: we'll imitate the sound of a Sasquatch to scare them. They'll run, and we'll trap them in the hollow log nearby," said Duncan.

"So they'll be stuck in there forever?" asked Dave.

"We're only blocking one side, not both," said Duncan.

"Alright, let's do it," said Dave.

The two hid behind a bush and imitated a Sasquatch roar.

"What was that noise?" asked Leshawna.

"Sounds like the Sasquatch," said Gwen.

"Quick, let's take shelter in that tree!" said Leshawna.

They ran inside the log, but in their panic, they forgot their bags. The boys took advantage of this and blocked the entrance.

They grabbed their bags, including the map and compass.

"That was well played—they never saw it coming," said Dave.

"Yeah, I wish I could see their faces when they realize we took everything," said Duncan.

The two guys realized they were having fun together.

"Not bad this time—you didn't mess everything up," said Dave.

"And you actually managed to push a rock," said Duncan.

They set off again.

Later, the girls tried to get out of the log and realized their stuff was gone.

"Looks like we got tricked by the boys," said Gwen.

"We're not letting them get away with this—we're getting our stuff back," said Leshawna.

Throughout the day, the boys and girls kept crossing paths, setting traps and tricks to steal each other's supplies. Leshawna wrapped Gwen like a mummy. Throughout the day, the sleeping bag, toilet paper, bug spray, rope, and binoculars changed hands multiple times. Leshawna still had the map and compass, while Duncan kept the night-vision goggles with him. Finally, the girls got the upper hand with a pitfall trap and took all the boys' supplies—except the night-vision goggles.

Dave and Duncan didn't see the girls again until nightfall. As Chef had predicted, it was so dark they couldn't even see their hands in front of their faces. Duncan pulled out the night-vision goggles, while Dave had no choice but to follow him. The tension between them was still cold.

"I can't believe we lost all our stuff," said Dave.

"This time, they were better than us," said Duncan.

Dave suddenly stopped and pointed at the ground. A footprint—twice as long as a normal man's and three times as wide—lay in the mud. Dave and Duncan looked at each other and smirked knowingly. Duncan whispered in Dave's ear for a moment. Dave frowned but nodded.

"Duncan! It's a Sasquatch footprint! Oh no! I'm so scared!" Dave cried in an exaggeratedly pitiful tone.

Sure enough, a nearby bush rustled. Duncan and Dave could tell something big was hiding in the bush. They had no idea what the girls were planning this time, but they knew where they were.

Suddenly, something jumped out of the bush. It wasn't Leshawna.

It was a creature—30 centimeters taller than a man, covered in purple fur, with glowing red eyes. A mix between a gorilla and a man, and a close cousin of the yeti—a Sasquatch. It stared at the boys and growled.

"YARGH!"

The boys took off running in a completely random direction. The giant ape chased after them.

Meanwhile, the girls continued on their way toward camp. Leshawna had lit a torch to guide them.

"We should be there in an hour or two!" said Gwen excitedly.

"And then either Duncan or Dave goes home," said Gwen.

"And we get one step closer to fame and fortune," Leshawna reminded her.

ROAR!

"YARGH!" Duncan and Dave screamed. The girls turned around.

"What was that?" Gwen asked.

In the dim glow of Leshawna's torch, they could make out three figures approaching them, one noticeably larger than the others.

"Run! Sasquatch!" Dave yelled as he and Duncan came sprinting toward them, looking terrified. Just behind them, the Sasquatch followed, growling and snarling monstrously.

"Oh crap!" Gwen shouted, and the girls joined the boys in running for their lives, screaming like crazy.

Eventually, they all ended up inside a cave. Duncan's night vision goggles had been rendered useless by Leshawna's torch, leaving him blind. Leshawna had thrown her torch away to get rid of the beast.

"Dave?" Duncan called.

"Duncan?" Gwen called.

"Gwen?" Dave called.

"Dave?" Leshawna called.

"Leshawna?" Gwen called.

"Leshawna?" Duncan called.

"Duncan?" Leshawna called.

"Okay, roll call done! Now what do we do about that monster?" Dave asked.

"I could've taken him," Duncan said.

"Yeah, that's why you were screaming like a little girl," Gwen teased.

"It was all part of the strategy. Anyway, I think we're safe here," Duncan said.

"Leshawna? Did you just kiss me?" Dave asked.

"Are you out of your mind?! No!" Leshawna shouted.

"Uh, Dave… you've got a bat on your face," Duncan said.

Silence hung for a few seconds before Dave let out a bloodcurdling scream.

"YAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAARRRGH! I WAS KISSED BY A BAT! I WAS KISSED BY A BAT!" said Dave

Confessional: Dave

"The weirdest part is… that bat was really into it!"

End Confessional

Both teams ran out of the cave, luckily for them, the Sasquatch exited from the other side. After running for a long time, they finally stopped to catch their breath.

"Is that thing even a known species?" Leshawna asked.

"I don't know, and I don't think I want to know," Duncan said.

"Well, one thing's for sure—the night's going to be rough," Gwen said.

"Yeah, especially since I lost the night vision goggles," Duncan added.

"I say we camp together until sunrise," Leshawna suggested.

"Fine, but no double-crossing, and you give us our stuff back," Dave said.

"Okay, deal," the girls agreed.

"Set up camp while we gather firewood," Duncan said.

While the girls set up the camp, the boys went off to collect wood.

"Why did you agree to that? It's obvious they're going to scam us," Dave said.

"Don't worry, I've learned my lesson," Duncan replied.

He lifted his shirt, revealing that he had secretly kept the map with him.

"That was actually pretty smart," Dave admitted.

"Yeah, I trust no one," Duncan said.

"Listen, Duncan, I didn't mean to yell at you earlier. I was just overwhelmed by everything," Dave admitted.

"It's fine. I shouldn't have said what I said either," Duncan replied.

The two shook hands.

"Now let's win this challenge," Dave said.

Meanwhile, the girls were setting up the campsite.

"Are you sure your plan will work?" Gwen asked.

"Yeah, we just have to play along convincingly," Leshawna said.

"Do I really have to snuggle up to Duncan?" Gwen asked.

"It's just for show," Leshawna reassured her.

"Yeah, but it's still kinda awkward," Gwen muttered.

"Don't worry, if all goes well, we win," Leshawna said.

The boys returned, and Duncan lit a fire. The two teams sat around the campfire while Leshawna started feeling cold.

"Can I have the sleeping bag?" Leshawna asked.

"Yeah, sure," Dave said.

"Duncan, mind if I sit next to you?" Gwen asked.

"Nah, go ahead," Duncan replied.

Gwen scooted closer to Duncan, resting her head on his shoulder, but not wanting to get any closer than necessary.

"You're not gonna fall asleep, right?" Gwen asked.

"Nah, don't worry," Duncan replied.

Morning came, and of course, the girls were gone.

"Duncan! Duncan! Wake up! The girls, the campfire, and our stuff are gone!" Dave shouted.

"What?!" Duncan jolted awake. He checked under his shirt— the map was gone.

"We got played again," Dave groaned.

Confessional: Gwen

"Do we feel bad? Nope. They started this war! And everything's fair in war! This war has been brewing for way too long."

End Confessional

"What do we do now?" Dave asked.

"Look, they dropped something," Duncan pointed out.

"It might be another trap," Dave warned.

"It's our only lead, we have no choice," Duncan replied.

"Alright, let's go," Duncan said.

The two boys sprinted with all their might, catching up to the girls, who were slowed down by their heavy sacks. The girls tried throwing the sacks at them to slow them down, but it didn't work. The boys overtook them, but just then—

The Sasquatch returned, standing right in their way.

"Oh no! Not now!" Dave panicked.

The Sasquatch grabbed both boys, who had been inches away from reaching the totem. Unfortunately for them, the girls made it first.

"Alright, it's over!" Chef Hatchet suddenly appeared out of nowhere. "The girls win, the boys lose!"

As Chef announced the winners, a special team arrived to handle the Sasquatch.

"We really have the worst luck," Duncan sighed.

"Yeah, but at least we gave it our all. No regrets," Dave admitted.

Later, at the elimination ceremony…

"This was supposed to be my day!" Chef complained. "I had everything planned! I was learning French! Playing the harp! Snooping through all your stuff! And I was gonna end my perfect day with my favorite midnight snack—sticky buns!"

The campers were stunned to hear that Chef had been going through their belongings.

"But you ruined everything! So here!" Chef tossed marshmallows to Leshawna and Gwen. He then turned to the boys with a sinister grin. Duncan glared impatiently at Chef, while Dave looked at him nervously. Chef waited, watching their expressions grow more impatient and anxious.

"You!" Chef handed the last marshmallow to Dave. "Take it, Germophobe!" He then turned to Duncan. "Your time is up."

"Cool, I wanna get out of here and go back to juvie. At least there, you know what to expect," Duncan said.

Chef led Duncan to the Dock of Shame, where the others were waiting for him.

"You might have a lot of flaws, but you've got a kind side too," Leshawna said.

"See ya, Punk-Man. Hope we meet again someday," Gwen said.

"Anytime, Goth Girl," Duncan replied.

"Thanks, Duncan, for being my friend on this island and for turning me into who I am now," Dave said.

"No big deal. You'd better win this stupid game," Duncan said.

He stepped onto the Boat of Losers and sailed away.

End of Chapter 24

Author's Note: And that's it for Chapter 24! A pretty classic chapter, but I really loved writing it. We're getting closer to the end of Island, and I'm feeling kinda emotional about it. I don't know if I'll fully write Chapter 27 or just do a summary since I don't have much for that episode.

My thoughts on Duncan: Duncan has always been one of my favorite Total Drama characters. Even though his character got ruined in All-Stars, it wasn't anything too major. I really enjoyed writing him, and I hope to do something great with him in Action and World Tour.
