Chapter 64: The Writing on the Wall
Ana's PoV
My leg bounces uncontrollably, the heel of my shoe tapping against the floor in a frantic, uneven rhythm. I don't even realize I'm biting my nail until I taste the faint, bitter tang of polish on my tongue. I drop my hand, flex my fingers, but the trembling doesn't stop.
The paper in front of me blurs as my vision swims. I blink rapidly, forcing the words back into focus. But I don't need to read them again. I already know what they say.
Shit.
Shit. Shit. Shit.
A shuddering breath rips from my lungs. My fingers curl into fists, crumpling the edge of the page. My heart hammers against my ribs, fast and uneven, like it's trying to escape.
This wasn't supposed to happen.
Not now. Not like this.
I press my other hand to my forehead, barely aware of the warmth beneath my palm. My throat tightens. A tear slips down my cheek, landing on the paper, smudging the ink just enough to make it feel unreal.
But it's not.
Shit.
