Edward
Holding the door open, he blinked at the woman who stood in his doorway.
"It's you! Oh my god," she said, "You're the guy from Disneyland…"
"Hi, it's you," he said, astounded by what this Rose lookalike was doing there.
"Wow—what a surprise! Small world, huh?"
Uh huh, he thought. "Yes." Her long blond hair was pulled back into a ponytail, she'd been slightly taller than Rose, and her green Nike tank top brought out the warm green color of her eyes. A slight blush graced her cheeks, and her fingers toyed with a pendant at her chest. Did Rose have a sister he didn't know about?
She stared at him, and Edward was about to ask why she was there, but she shook her head as if to release herself from the spell. She began tucking her hair over her ears. "Oh, I'm a mess. I just stopped on my way home from working out. I'm sorry for just showing up. My friend from CrossFit gave me your address, said you were giving piano lessons, and my daughter Katie really wants to learn."
"You have a daughter?"
"Yes, she's at school now…well, hello there." Her eyes turned to Renesmee, who'd appeared beside Edward…"Well, I guess she'd be about her age. Is this your daughter?"
Nessie's mouth formed an O as she stood there. "I'm Renesmee," she said. "I'm 9."
The woman held out her hand to Nessie, flashing them both with long, red glossy nails. "What a beautiful name. Very unique." She bent her wrist and took Nessie's hand in hers, giving the most delicate shake. "I'm Lisa…and it's a pleasure to meet you."
"Forgive my manners. I'm Edward, and yes, I'd be happy to teach your daughter."
Over the next few days, Lisa had brought her daughter over for piano lessons, bringing cookies each time…and she'd made sure her makeup was done, her hair lay long and straight to the middle of her back, and that her floral perfume hung in the air when she left. Katie had gotten along well enough with Nessie, but Edward suspected by her tone that his daughter was just being polite.
"So do you like Katie?" Edward asked.
"She's okay. All she talks about are these boys from her class that she's madly in love with and she's all into getting her nails done…kind of superficial…"
He laughed. "Judgmental much?"
"Are you going to ask Lisa out, Daddy?"
He met Nessie's eyes, unable to decipher whether she seemed disappointed or just curious. The thing with Bella had thrown them both for a loop, and Nessie had not mentioned her again, and now his perceptive daughter seemed to notice any time Edward received female attention. Could it have been a coincidence that this woman, who resembled his late wife, had just shown up at his door? Bella would have told him that there were no such things as coincidences. But still, how small could this world be?
"No. Maybe. I don't know." He couldn't deny that she was attractive, and Lisa never hid her interest, openly flirty, setting her hand on his arm whenever they spoke, and adding that the boyfriend with whom she'd suspected was cheating on her was now her ex.
"What is your heart telling you?"
"My heart wants me to move on. Is that what you want to hear?"
Her face remained expressionless. Edward wondered if she would take this moment to bring up Bella.
"I just want you to be happy, Daddy."
"I want us both to be happy, Ness."
"But…what if…" she began.
"What if…what? If you don't like Lisa, then I won't…"
"I've been emailing Bella."
His brows rose. What? "Has she responded?" He was afraid to hear the answer.
"Yeah…she says she's doing energy work. That she's thinking of starting up the videos again."
"Oh…that's great." But had she mentioned Edward? Did she miss him? Did she still think of him everyday? "Energy work. Huh." He turned to go to the kitchen.
"She asked how you were." Edward turned back around.
"What did you say?"
"That you were giving piano lessons. That made her so happy."
Was she alone? Did she realize her mistake? Was she ready to give them another chance?
"Good for her. Is she…" He let the words die on his tongue. His daughter was not the one to engage in this type of conversation.
"I think she's alone, Daddy. Sounds like she's figuring herself out."
"Oh. Okay."
"Does she seem happy?"
"Yeah."
That was it. Bella had moved on…figuring herself out…and Nessie had nothing else to add. Maybe it was time for him to do the same.
Bella
The ring of her doorbell surprised her, as she was just finishing up with a client—a woman who'd smoked all her life, who'd been trying to quit. She'd found that sometimes energetic healing worked in combination with a lot of counseling.
The woman hugged her when they were done, and Bella walked her out to the front door, finding a medium sized box on her doorstep. The return address was from Forks, from Charlie…She bade goodbye to the lady and lugged the box inside.
She texted her dad. You sent me a box.
Yeah…a little trip down memory lane. Thought it might be fun for you.
The first thing Bella found when she opened the flaps of the box was an old brown photo album. It had been a scrapbook she'd made back in high school. It featured pictures with her and Angela together at the prom, ticket stubs, short poems she'd written, and on the last page a photo of her teenage self where she'd been all teeth and awkward-ness as she sat beside Jacob and Billy in his wheelchair. "Great. Thanks, Dad," she said, self-conscious at the photo of her younger self.
Next, she'd found some cd's and her favorite t-shirt, size XXL from when she'd been heavy. She held it up to herself, marveling at how big she'd been in her childhood. Once she hit puberty, with a lot of help from her mom and a few growth spurts, she'd shed the weight.
After removing a manila envelope full of report cards and class pictures, she found a folded large white piece of paper and gasped at the sight of it. She smoothed out the large wrinkled sheet onto her coffee table—a project from her English class, she remembered. It said "My Future" at the top, listing categories of spouse, interests, and goals. She'd listed the description of her future husband: tall, handsome, bronze-colored hair, hazel eyes, plays the piano. Her hand flew to her mouth.
She scanned it to see what other insights to glean from her 14 year old self.
1 girl and 1 boy. A photo of blue waves descending on a white sandy beach. Working with the hands, either writing or drawing. Her younger self created a vision board for school…before she'd even known what the law of attraction was.
Her future husband…she'd been manifesting Edward. And Nessie. Did that mean her future still left it open for her to have a boy?
Bella shook her head. Charlie must have known what her reaction would be to seeing this.
Renesmee had manifested her into their lives. Though Bella had shoved her own vision board to the back of her subconscious, she'd actually manifested them first.
Leaving the large sheet on the coffee table, she went to her computer. Since Bella didn't believe in coincidences, she thought this timing to be a true synchronicity. A message from the universe.
At the time when they'd gotten engaged, as much as she believed she was, she hadn't been ready. Now, it was going to take all of her courage to look him up, to find out whether he had forgiven her. If he was willing to give her a second chance. He might have moved on. A man like Edward wasn't likely to stay single for long. Bella had to prepare for the idea that he might have moved on—started dating again, maybe that he would not be willing to speak to her again.
Bella looked at her schedule, reached out to Nessie, asking if she could see them. When Nessie responded with the address at lightning speed, Bella checked her schedule. Hopefully Edward didn't slam the door on her face, or maybe tell her to go to hell. It was a chance she was willing to take.
This time nothing was going to stop her from trying.
A/N: Thanks for sticking with me. What will Bella find when she gets there? Stay with me for more. So much gratitude to my beta EdwardsFirstKiss for all her patience and help as well! Thanks so much to my reviewers (so many hugs) and thanks to you all for reading!
