November 20, 1998
A few weeks had passed since Harry learned that he was pregnant from that amazing club night in the bathroom with Howard. However, as incredible as it was that he was among the rare group who could get pregnant without the use of potions…There were other things revealed that day which added to the betrayal Harry discovered back in August when he went to the bank and learned about his lordships and inheritances, the very situation that made him decide to put on a disguise and go to a muggle nightclub.
Harry learned that Howard was obviously not a muggle or the teen wouldn't have ended up pregnant. Harry also realized with help from Theodore and Blaise that the reason Ginny was all over him to get back together is because she likely wanted to live as the wife to a lord and enjoy the lavish lifestyle. And third, there was a chance Harry could figure out who the father of the baby is with a spell or potion. Harry had not yet heard from Draco about it.
It was now mid-November and Harry was officially three months pregnant. It was insane how fast the time flew. Harry still dealt with the annoying symptoms of morning sickness, frequent bathroom use, fatigue, and mood swings. Those were the most prominent, but there had been others too. Still no one knew except Draco, Hermione, Blaise, Theodore, and now Ron. Hermione told him, the red-head was shocked, of course.
But like the amazing friend Ron was, he told Harry he fully supported him and would help in any way he could. Even if it meant going against his mother and sister. And on top of all that, Harry was still seeing his mind healer. Things were moving in a good direction with all that, and Harry had revealed he was pregnant too, but didn't know who the father was.
He claimed it as a one-night stand in a muggle club, him trying to enjoy one night of not being Harry Potter.
It only came up in conversation because Healer Strout could see there was something else on Harry's mind, so he caved and told her. That had been at his next appointment after learning he was pregnant, and he'd been just about ten weeks for it. Draco and Harry agreed that they'd do prenatal checks every two weeks until Harry got into his final months of pregnancy, then they'd go once a week.
They kept it in their room and at night after dinner. It was the easiest time for both of them. "Alright, come on, Potter. Let's see how the baby is doing since the initial scan on Halloween." Draco stated as he got into the dorm after his shift at the infirmary ended.
Harry nodded and got on his bed before laying back, he'd already basically gotten into his pajamas so it would be easy for Draco to get at his stomach. "How are you feeling?" The blonde asked.
"Almost everything I can deal with from that book you got me on male pregnancy. Morning sickness is still pretty bad, it doesn't help when certain smells don't agree with me." Harry admitted.
"Can't do nothing about that, unfortunately. The smells, but maybe we can try a stomach soother potion? I'll brew you a big batch, we'll bottle it in the proper dosage vial and you can carry them around for the time it gets bad." Draco said. "Are you still taking all the other potions as required?"
Harry nodded. "Every morning before I go to breakfast."
"Good." Draco was updating everything in the file they'd made to monitor Harry's pregnancy, and obviously it was kept in their room in Draco's desk. "Well, you should be twelve weeks today. Officially three months along, let's see how the baby is doing," He suggested.
"Sounds good. Have you had any luck talking to Madam Pomfrey about that spell or potion to determine the parents?" Harry wondered.
"No, it's been too busy in the infirmary to have a long discussion with her. It's sick season. But I will ask tomorrow morning. As long as nothing happens, the infirmary should be empty finally which leaves us open to do more lessons." Draco replied. With Harry's shirt out of the way, Draco drew his wand. "Look at that, you're starting to show. Small, but it's there. I can see a little bump."
Draco first did a spell to measure the bump and mark it down, then he set the file down on Harry's desk and performed the spell to see the baby. It became more and more real to Harry every time he saw his child in his womb. He'd look quietly while Draco was taking down information about the length, checking the amniotic fluid level, and placement of the placenta. Draco also marked in his notes how development was going, if everything was as it should be.
Next, Draco checked heart rate and magical core. "Everything is perfect, Harry." Draco finally reported. "I am only a little concerned about the magical core."
"What's wrong?" Harry asked.
"In magical pregnancy, usually both parents are present to balance out the magical energy going to their child. Right now, your baby is only getting it from you. And you are powerful, but it's draining you to be the sole giver. It's why you're so tired all the time. Fatigue is normal for pregnancy, and it increases the farther along you get, but right now…You're extremely tired." Draco said.
"I also suspect the fatigue is not helping you to not feel sick all the time." He added. "We need to find out who the father is or find a way to boost you while pregnant. I might have to talk to Headmaster Snape about changing the formula of the potions you take." Draco said. "Not that I'll tell him it's you."
"It's fine. Like you said, everyone is gonna find out eventually." Harry said when Draco did a spell to save the picture of what the baby looked like(Like a sonogram). Then Draco tucked the picture away in the folder.
"I know what I said, Harry, but I also don't want everyone harping on you, then you get stressed out because that's not good for either you or the baby." Draco said. "We agreed, though, that we'd tell those who need to know. So I think it's time to tell the Headmaster and the teachers. That way they understand when you start feeling sick or need the loo. You can't keep making excuses."
Harry knew that, but still. While he never used to worry about image before, he did now. Likely part of his insecurities that he was working on with Healer Strout. "Okay, you're right…" Harry finally agreed.
"I'll take care of it at the next staff meeting. But tomorrow, I'll talk to Poppy if there's a way to determine the father." Draco put a hand on Harry's shoulder. "Everything will be okay."
Harry nodded to him. "Thanks, Draco. I appreciate all this…"
"You're welcome, Harry."
. . .
The next day, Draco got to the infirmary quickly and prayed no one needed tending so he could talk to Madam Pomfrey about the situation without revealing Harry's name. Yes, eventually, it would all come out. But for now, Draco knew that Harry wanted to know who the father was and reach out to the man before making anything public. Draco could respect that.
"Good morning, Mr. Malfoy." Poppy greeted once the young blonde got into the infirmary.
"Good morning, Madam Pomfrey." Draco smiled. "What does our day bring us?"
"No students, yet," She replied. "I thought we might use some time to get to the next part of your training."
"I am looking forward to what I learn next. But…If I may, I was reading through a medical book in the library. I found it in the Restricted Section. My thanks, again, for giving me permission to have access to it for my training." Draco bowed his head. "I came across something that didn't offer much explanation and wondered if perhaps you could shed some light on the topic?"
"Of course. Of course." Madam Pomfrey nodded. "What is it you read?"
"There are ways to tell a pregnant man or woman the paternity of their child if they do not know. I wondered if this is true, and what way there might be. I find that notion extraordinary. I've been a wizard all my life and known magic. It never ceases to amaze me." Draco asked.
"It is always evolving, isn't it?" Poppy chuckled. "Yes. Now, for your inquiry…There is a two-part potion and spell combination that would reveal the paternity of an unborn child." She informed. "The process is that the potion is brewed, then there is a spell recited that will produce a result of who the parents are."
"I'm not seeing the link between the potion and scan?" Draco confessed.
"I believe the potion is either ingested, then the spell performed. Or the potion requires the expecting mother or father's blood before it is poured on a piece of parchment, and then the spell." Poppy replied. "But I couldn't say for sure. I was only told of this information and never taught it because there have been so few inquiries by expecting wizards or witches of who the other parents is."
"What about in a situation where someone was raped, and it could be used to prove who did the raping?" Draco used as a suggestion.
"I assume those are the few cases in which they'd be used, but it's not a standard practice taught. I do know the spell to perform for the second part of the process. But the potion, however, would be better directed to the headmaster if you'd like to learn the whole process." Poppy mentioned. "As I said, it's a complex potion and I've been told only masters of that art would understand the instructions."
Draco nodded, understanding. "Thank you. I will bring that up with him next time I see him. Could you teach me the spell? You know me, like to learn everything I can about this job. I like having a well rounded education." The teenager said.
"Certainly." Poppy smiled. "We'll start with that and move on until we're needed."
. . .
Much later on, Draco had gotten through a tiring day of learning and a few patients needing tending. But he did learn the spell he'd need for the paternity reveal. That's what he was calling it now. Draco now just had to talk to his godfather, who was also the headmaster. So before he returned to his dorm, be meandered to the statue at the base of the Headmaster's tower.
Draco knew his godfather set up the parchment to alert people of who was there, so he quickly set his name down and waited. When the staircase moved, he got on and reached the door. The teen knocked and the door opened so Draco could see his unofficial uncle sitting at his desk.
"Hi, Uncle Sev." Draco greeted.
"Hello, godson. What brings you to my office?" Severus questioned while still writing on documents.
"I actually need your help with something for my healer training." Draco said.
"I am not a healer, Draco." Severus reminded.
"No, no. Not in that way. Forgive me, I should have worded it better." Draco stated. "I need your help with something from my training that Madam Pomfrey suggested I bring to you."
"And what is this something?" Severus inquired.
"The potion used to determine paternity in those who don't know who the father of their unborn child is." Draco replied. "Poppy said that you'd probably be able to tell me more about it, possibly teach me to brew."
Severus regarded his godson. "Who did you sleep with that slept with so many they don't know who the father is?" The man asked.
Draco blinked. "No-What? No one. I swear. I haven't slept with anyone…Well, except Pansy the night of the Yule Ball in my fourth year. One-time thing. But no one since. I was too focused on school, and even now, my training to become a healer." The teenager admitted quickly.
"Mother and Father know I do not desire to settle down until I've completed my training and got settled into working as a healer. They've agreed not to push the matter of marriage, giving an heir, or taking over the family until after that." Draco added.
"Then why do you need to know this one potion out of nowhere. It's rare that it's even needed, Poppy wouldn't have brought it up without cause. Or you wouldn't be asking without cause." Severus remarked.
"I came across it in a book from the restricted section of the library and asked Madam Pomfrey. She told me it was a two-part test. Potion, and spell afterwards. She taught me the spell, but said I'd have to likely speak to you as a potions master to learn the potion." Draco explained.
"But again, it's not commonly used and therefore, not required of healers to know. So why do you want to know?" The man pushed. "Remember that I am your godfather, Draco. I know you better than you think I do. You spent most of your childhood with me, learning to brew young. So what is the reason?"
Fuck, his godfather did know him. But he still took a pre-healer's oath not to reveal patient information without permission. Harry did sort of give him permission, but also wanted to keep things quiet a bit longer for a chance to tell the father before anything else.
"Okay. Okay. You win…I promised a friend who is pregnant from a one-night stand that wants to at least let the other father know about the baby that I'd help try to find the guy." Draco informed. "But my friend doesn't want anyone knowing yet, so that's all I can give you without breaking my oath to reveal information about patients."
"You're not even a fully trained healer, Draco…" Severus sighed.
"But I passed my training for healer mid-wivery. I know all the spells to monitor, for c-section, delivery, and prenatal potions. This is just one thing that I came across in research and I need your help to help my friend." Draco said. "I promised them I wouldn't say anything more…So can you help me, please?"
Severus stared at his godson a few moments before he caved. "Very well, Draco. I will teach you about the potion. But understand that this is not something you learn overnight. You're going to have to give me a week or so to get the ingredients. Some of them are not as easy to obtain as popping into Diagon Alley's Apothecary.
"How long does it take to brew?" The blonde inquired.
"A week, and it's extremely complex to brew. As well as requiring a lot of attention. It's something I have to move things around in my schedule in order to be available to meet all its markers for additions, stirring, and monitoring temperature." Severus informed.
"I can talk to Madam Pomfrey about opening my availability for this. I'm sure she'll understand. The only thing she didn't know was if this potion is ingested or blood added then poured. Do you know?" Draco wondered.
"It's both." Severus stated. "There are two potions. One involves ingesting half and then pouring the rest on the parchment; it acts as a link. After the correct wait time, the second potion involves adding three drops of blood to it. That is swirled around seven times clockwise before it is poured on the parchment and you speak the incantation you were taught."
"I understand." Draco nodded. "Thank you, Uncle Severus."
"You're welcome. I will begin reaching out to contacts of mine with the ingredients needed that I do not have in store. We will begin the first week of December in ingredient preparation and brewing." Severus said.
"I appreciate this. I'm sure my friend will too. Is there…Anything I can study about preparing, the process?" Draco inquired.
Severus got up from his seat and went over into his lab off the main office. He also had a bedroom and his own library, but that's besides the point. Draco waited as Severus came out with a piece of parchment and gave it to him. "This is the entire process, if you'd like to familiarize yourself with it." Severus stated.
"I will, thank you." Draco replied.
"One question…Is this friend of yours who is pregnant a student in this school currently?" Draco went to protest. "I am not asking for anything other than confirmation of this being a current student, Draco. I don't need a name, year, or even gender…"
"Yes. But you'll find out soon enough with the other teachers. Next staff meeting, my friend understands that they're becoming too far along to hide it much longer and had just wanted to know who the father was to let them know before it came out." Draco mentioned.
"The next staff meeting is tomorrow at 10:00 am." Severus informed.
"Then I guess you'll know tomorrow morning." Draco told his godfather.
Severus nodded, accepting the answer and then Draco bid the man a goodbye to return to his dorm. Harry, of course, was at his desk and working on assignments before fatigue kicked in and he went to bed for the night.
"Hey, you're back. Late day?" Harry asked, glancing over when the dorm door opened.
"Yeah, and I went to see the headmaster too." Draco nodded.
"Everything okay?" Harry inquired.
"Oh, absolutely. I got good news for you from it. In two weeks, everything will be ready for you to find out who the father of your baby is." Draco informed.
"Really?" Harry asked.
"It's a two-part process. The headmaster and I are going to brew the potions needed, and Madam Pomfrey already taught me the spell to use with it. So the second week in December, I'd say, you'll know for sure." Draco promised.
"Thank you, Draco. This means a lot to me." Harry said gently.
"You're welcome. Oh, and the next staff meeting is on Tomorrow…So that's when I'm telling the teachers. If you're still okay with that?" Draco asked to confirm.
Harry nodded softly. "Yeah, as long as they can be discreet about it. I don't want the students knowing, least of all, Ginny." Harry shuddered. "I feel like she's in that crazy ex stage where she stalks me and when she learns I slept with someone else and got pregnant…She's going to go nuts. On the guy, or me and the baby…"
"Harry, I promise you that we're going to do everything we can to make sure that doesn't happen. If she goes too far, she will end up arrested and facing the Wizengamot." Draco assured. "Now, take it easy. I'm going to go hit the shower."
"Thanks again, Dray." Harry smiled.
Draco patted his shoulder, and then headed off to his personal bathroom for a shower. Harry turned back to his desk and continued working on his homework. Nothing was due til Monday, but that didn't mean Harry had to wait until Sunday night to get everything done. He wanted to do well in school, and graduate this year. And he would, even while pregnant.
