Here we are with the One Angry Princess episode. This was a tough one to write since it was one of the episodes I didn't like. I redid the episode with Varian and Attila's bakery having a more prominent role than the actual crime, so hopefully, this chapter will go over well.
Disclaimer: I don't own anything related to Tangled. I only own this story idea.
With that, let's get this chapter rolling.
Some time passed, and Andrew became part of the group. As expected, Cassandra was assigned as his guard (a suggestion from Rapunzel), so Cass spent more time on guard duty, which made her happy. Additionally, Varian now had someone new to discuss science with, and Andrew demonstrated a greater interest than the others.
Meanwhile, Rapunzel and Eugene sat in the garden as she excitedly talked about Attila soon opening his bakery. "He asked me to cut the ribbon instead of my dad! I can't wait for him to open his shop! I'm sure he'll be super popular! His baking is amazing!"
"Attila's a good guy. He deserves it," Eugene smiled. "I'm glad the guys have the chance to make their dreams come true. You're a real miracle worker, Sunshine."
"Thank you, Eugene," Rapunzel replied with a smile.
"Rapunzel! It's time!" Cassandra called.
"Oh, right! It's time for the opening!" The princess remembered as they stood up. "Do you think we should ask Varian if he wants to join us?"
Eugene shrugged. "It couldn't hurt. Plus, introducing them would let Attila meet someone who can fix his equipment."
"Hm, good point," Rapunzel agreed, smiling. "Then let's go!" She ran ahead while Eugene shook his head fondly before following her.
(In Varian's lab)
Meanwhile, Varian and Andrew worked on improving Andrew's hot air balloon. Pete and Stan were also present, acting as Andrew's guards. Cass wasn't there because she was training Faith and fitting her for a lady-in-waiting uniform. With Cassandra spending more hours on guard duty, the queen suggested finding someone to take over her lady-in-waiting responsibilities. Varian recommended Faith, as Rapunzel was more independent than other princesses. Faith would primarily need to keep Rapunzel on schedule and assist her with her hair, making this an excellent introduction to the role.
"So, this chemical will make the balloon go faster and farther?" Andrew asked as Varian held up a flask of Flynnoleum.
"We'll find out once we try it!" Varian replied, setting the flask aside before giving Pete a warning glance. "Don't touch that." Pete quickly pulled his hand away from one of Varian's devices.
"Varian?" Rapunzel called, peering into his lab. "Are you busy?"
"Oh, Rapunzel!" Varian looked over. "Well, we were working on the balloon…" He turned back to Andrew.
"Go ahead," Andrew waved dismissively. "I'm gonna go meet up with Cass. See ya, guys," he called to the guards as he left, nodding at the princess and Eugene on his way out.
Pete whistled. "Let me tell ya something, that is one handsome fella."
"I know, and he sounds so worldly, which makes him handsome on the inside," Stan agreed.
"Oh, come on, he's not that handsome!" Eugene protested.
"Jealousy doesn't look good on you, Eugene," Varian teased.
"I'm not jealous! Why would I be jealous?!"
"His looks are natural, while you use fifty different hair and skin products."
"Gah!" Eugene gasped at the kid's bluntness as the two guards laughed at his reaction. Ruddiger also squeaked out a laugh from his spot on the table.
"That was cruel, kid, really cruel," Eugene glared at the alchemist, causing Varian to chuckle at his dramatics.
"Okay, guys, you've had your laughs," Rapunzel stepped in to ease the tension before smiling at Varian. "So, Varian, today we're going to open my friend Attila's bakery! Wanna join us?"
"Attila?" Varian blinked before remembering. "Oh, right, he's one of the guys who helped rescue you from your tower."
"Right!" She nodded. "He was one of the first friends I made on my first day out of the tower! It's his dream to have his own bakery!"
"I thought introducing you two would be a good idea," Eugene said.
After considering for a moment, Varian nodded. "Alright. Let me change into my nice clothes."
"Great!" Rapunzel cheered.
(Out in town)
The town bells rang as Rapunzel stood before a red ribbon. "Nothing makes me happier than a dream coming true!" She held a pair of scissors in her hand. "Especially when that dream belongs to a dear friend like Attila." The thug stood beside her proudly, flanked by his pub thug friends, while Eugene, Cass, Andrew, and Varian stood near Rapunzel. "So let us be the first to welcome Attila the Bun Bakery to Corona!"
She snipped the ribbon, but no one was there to witness it. The street was so empty that a tumbleweed rolled past. Rapunzel and her group glanced around, slightly concerned.
"You guys remembered to put up flyers, right?" Varian whispered to Eugene.
"All over town," he replied.
"Then I think I know what the problem is."
Attila cleared his throat before reading his speech. "Ahem. My mom always said that you can only get what you want outta life by using the three C's: Crime, carnage, and crime." Rapunzel cringed slightly, sensing it wasn't helping. "But thanks to Rapunzel, who helped make all of this possible, I've learned there's a fourth C: kindness."
The princess smiled bashfully while the other pub thugs cheered. "Uh, kindness doesn't start with–" Cass glanced at the boys.
"Uh-uh," Eugene interrupted.
"Just let him have it, Cassie," Andrew said quietly.
"Now, who wants a treat?" Attila offered some pastries.
"Oh, I do!" Hook Foot hollered, joined by the other ducklings as Rapunzel and her friends looked on happily.
"One bimberry butternut, please," Rapunzel said with a smile, handing him some coins and taking one.
"Make that two," Varian added, doing the same.
The thugs rushed to the plate eagerly, each grabbing one. "Hey, guys, come on. You gotta pay for those." They stared at him, wide-eyed. "I'm running a legitimate business here."
Varian chuckled and pulled out some more coins. "Here, guys, they're on me. But only this once."
The pub thugs cheered again, enjoying their treats. "Thanks, Varian," Attila said, grateful to the alchemist. "Truth be told, I don't like telling the guys 'no.'"
"Hey, I might as well do something with my commission money," Varian shrugged.
"Hi, Varian!"
A little boy with his parents waved to the older boy. "Hi, Elliot," Varian waved back, kneeling as the family approached. "How have you been?"
"Good."
"We haven't seen you around much, Varian," Elliot's mom remarked.
"I've been busy at the castle, but I'll stop by Old Corona soon. Hey, Elliot, want to try one of my friend's butternuts?" Varian offered, pointing to Attila. "They're delicious."
Elliot looked at Attila but hesitated when he saw his scary helmet. "Don't worry, he's not as scary as he looks," the alchemist assured him. Encouraged by the older boy, Elliot nodded.
"Here you go," Attila knelt down to offer a treat. The little boy smiled at the butternuts and eagerly took one.
"Yum!" he declared, taking a bite. His father smiled and paid for the pastry, plus a little extra for two more before the family moved on. "Bye, Varian!"
"Bye!" Varian waved goodbye.
"Looks like we're off to a promising start," Eugene remarked.
"Yeah…" Attila replied, though he didn't sound very enthusiastic.
"What's wrong?"
"Well…" He began before sighing, feeling discouraged. "I just know that if Varian hadn't been here, that family would've run the other way."
"Oh, let 'em run!" Eugene dismissed. "Once word gets out about how good your baking is, no one is gonna care that you are… you."
"Besides, it's still early. Most people don't even like sweets in the morning," Rapunzel said, crossing her arms confidently.
"I want something sweet this morning!" another child exclaimed, directing their attention to a small crowd in front of Monty's Sweet Shoppe across the street.
"Okay, I see a flaw in this plan," Varian said.
Moments later, Monty stepped outside. "Uncle Monty!" Everyone except Andrew called out, waving to him since the visiting prince hadn't been introduced yet.
"Heya, kids!" Monty waved as he walked over, smiling politely at the princess. "Princess Rapunzel."
"Monty," she replied warmly. "How are the new oven mitts working?"
"Oh, ho, they're perfect," the candymaker said. "Good call, Princess; I really needed new ones."
"You're welcome, and again, I'm sorry for the mess at the Goodwill Festival."
"Eh, water under the bridge now," Monty said dismissively.
"I don't believe we've had the pleasure," Andrew stepped forward with a smile.
"Oh, right! Monty, this is Prince Andrew. He's visiting Corona on a diplomatic trip," Rapunzel introduced. "Andrew, this is Monty, our resident candymaker."
"A pleasure, Your Highness," Monty bowed.
"The pleasure's all mine, and Andrew is just fine."
"I just came by to wish my new neighbor good luck!" He smiled at Attila. "And to be one of his first customers!" He noticed the plate of butternuts, his eyes widening in delight. "Wow! Oh my goodness! I believe I will try one of these bimberry butternuts!"
"Thanks, they're my specialty!" Attila explained proudly as Monty paid for his treat. "I grow the bimberries myself!"
Monty took a bite, savoring the flavor before giving a pleased look. "Attila, these are bimberry terrific! Also, Andrew, stop by my store, and I'll give you a complimentary treat on the house."
"Thank you, Monty," Andrew smiled.
"My pleasure." He was about to walk away when he remembered something. "Oh, by the way, come check out my new window sculpture when you can. It was a doozy to make but well worth it."
"We definitely will, Monty," Rapunzel smiled at him as he left.
"Hey, Feldspar!" Monty called to the cobbler as they crossed paths. "You've simply gotta try one of these bimberry butternuts! They're out of this world!" he exclaimed while returning to his shop.
"Oh, thanks, Uncle Monty," Feldspar replied, taking his advice. "I certainly wi–" He took one look at Attila, who waved cheerfully at him and ran off screaming. "Oh, my goodness, a giant man!"
"Yeah, Attila might have a problem," Varian said bluntly. "Even if you take his reputation and appearance out of the equation, no one's going to come to his shop when Monty's is right there."
"He's right," Attila sighed, feeling discouraged.
"Don't you worry," Rapunzel tried to reassure him. "Attila the Bun is gonna be just as successful as the Sweet Shoppe, if not more so." Eugene and Cass nodded in agreement, but when she mentioned the Sweet Shoppe, they exchanged uncertain glances. Varian put his hand to his chin, deep in thought, searching for a solution to the problem. "And we are all going to help! Right, guys?"
The thugs cheered in response. "Hey, who can float me change for a carp?" Shorty pulled a fish from his beard.
(After that)
While the others implemented their ideas to attract customers, Varian and Andrew took a different approach by asking Monty for advice. "Monty's had his family business for four generations. He would be the best person to ask about making a business successful."
"Wow, look at that one!" they heard a kid exclaim. The boys walked over to the window and saw a group of children admiring Monty's display. Their eyes widened at the sight of a blue sculpture of the Moonlight Phantom in the window, poised on a platform with his cape billowing behind him.
"Wow..." Varian breathed, feeling moved by the display.
"The Moonlight Phantom looks so cool!" one of the boys declared.
"Mama told me he was bad, but if Monty likes him, maybe he's not so bad after all," a girl said as the kids walked away with their treats.
"Looks like you have a fan club," Andrew said, nudging Varian lightly.
"I guess so…" the alchemist replied shyly before stepping inside.
Monty smiled as he saw them enter. "Hey, boys. Pick out whatever you like. I have a new lollipop flavor for sale," he said, gesturing to a stand of large blue swirly pops. "Varian approved."
"Sounds good," Andrew said.
Varian laughed. "We'll take two, Monty. By the way, we also saw the new sculpture. It looks amazing."
"Thank you, Varian," Monty smiled as they each grabbed a sucker.
"You make them yourself?" Andrew asked.
"Yes, from leftover hard candy. I felt bad about it going to waste when there wasn't enough left for another batch, so I started using it to make window displays. No waste, and I save money on decorations for the shop."
"Smart."
"Say, Monty, we were hoping you could help us with something," Varian said.
"Certainly. What can I help you with?"
"Rapunzel's friend, Attila—the guy with the butternuts across the street—just opened his own bakery and is having a tough time getting people to try his place."
"Well, starting a new business can be tough," Monty sympathized. "I know my great-grandfather didn't have immediate success when he first built this place. I'd be happy to show him the ropes if you're worried about that."
"I know, Monty, but the main issue is that people will automatically go to your store because everyone knows you. You're a respected citizen of Corona, loved just as much as the Princess. Meanwhile, Attila, uh…"
"Yes, I understand what you mean," Monty agreed. "Reputations have long lives and all that. I can see him struggling to establish himself here."
"If only there were a place where Attila could have all the customers to himself…" Andrew pondered. "No offense, Monty."
"None taken, Andrew. I get where you're going with this."
Varian looked thoughtful for a moment before a realization hit him. "That's it!"
"What's it?" the other two asked.
"I know a spot where Attila can set up and have all the demand to himself," the alchemist said. "Let's gather the others, and I'll explain my plan!" They heard a bell outside, followed by a goat braying and people shouting. The three looked out the window and saw Rapunzel in a cupcake costume, along with the others, running from Milton, the goat.
"Let's wait a minute," Varian suggested after a pause.
"Agreed," the other two nodded.
(Later)
Once the guys returned from the goat chase, they found Varian and Andrew outside the bakery, where the alchemist shared his idea.
"You think Attila should move the shop to Old Corona?" Rapunzel asked.
"I know it's not as glamorous as the Capital, but Old Corona doesn't have a bakery. If kids want a treat, they have to travel all the way to the Capital," Varian explained. "Girls, you've come out to see me, so you know how long that takes."
"Hmm, he's got a point," Cass agreed. "It's either take a day trip for a sweet or make it themselves."
"Like Varian said earlier, even if you set aside reputation and appearance, people tend to stick with what's familiar. As long as they're next to each other, Attila has a disadvantage," Andrew concurred.
"Plus, Eugene mentioned that Attila was also the cook at the Snuggly Duckling," Varian added. "Until they find someone else for that position, the guys may need Attila to fill in sometimes, and being in the Capital wouldn't be practical for that."
"Yeah, we've been having a hard time finding someone," Hook Foot agreed.
"People just don't seem to want to work at the pub," Vladimir added.
Varian approached Attila with a smile. "As the mayor's son, I can talk to my father and arrange for you to have a shop there. People will appreciate not having to travel all the way to the Capital for something sweet without having to make it themselves. I'm sure Elliot has already mentioned you to his friends."
"You'd really do that for me?" Attila asked in amazement.
Varian grinned. "Everyone deserves the chance to make their dreams come true. Besides, any friend of Rapunzel's is a friend of mine. We can go to Old Corona and discuss things with my dad right now if you'd like."
Attila sniffled, touched by the gesture. "Can I… hug you?"
Varian chuckled and nodded, then gasped as the big man wrapped his arms around him. "Wow! You give really good hugs!"
"Eugene and I can come with you guys!" Rapunzel smiled.
"Vlad, Big Nose, and I can stay and watch the shop," Hook Foot volunteered.
"Just don't eat everything, guys," Attila said, making the others laugh.
"Then I'll keep an eye on them," Andrew suggested.
"Hey!" Hook Foot complained.
"And I'll stay with you," Cass said. "I still have a job to do."
"Mind if we take the balloon, Andrew?" Varian asked.
"Go for it. Just don't let Eugene drive."
"Hey," Eugene glared, prompting another round of laughter.
(In Old Corona)
After getting the balloon, Varian, Eugene, Rapunzel, and Attila flew to Old Corona, landing outside Varian's house.
As they all exited, Attila asked, "Do you really think your dad will approve my bakery?"
"Trust me," Varian smiled at him. "I'll convince him."
"Will he ask me anything?"
"He might want you to demonstrate your baking skills so he knows you're serious about this, but you'll be fine."
They approached the manor door, and Varian opened it, peering inside. "Dad! I'm home!"
"Varian?" Quirin walked over to the door in surprise. "Welcome home! Is everything alright?"
"We have a problem that I hope you can help with." Varian nodded to Attila. "This is Attila, a friend of Rapunzel. He recently opened a bakery, but the only location in the Capital is right across from Monty's Sweet Shoppe. So, I told him we could discuss moving his bakery here."
Quirin nodded. "Well, you all should come in so we can talk about this. I'll prepare some drinks. Mrs. Peters brought some muffins I intended to take to the castle." He walked inside.
"Thanks, Dad!" Varian smiled and opened the door wider. "Come on in, everyone!"
They all entered, and Quirin got refreshments for them. Varian sat at the table with the other three, humming happily.
"What's got you in such a good mood?" Eugene asked with a chuckle.
"I'm just glad to be home. Don't get me wrong, I'm happy to stay at the castle, but I miss being here."
Quirin returned with food and drinks, and they all began to eat. Attila reached into his belt and pulled out a straw to drink juice from beneath his helmet. He slightly adjusted the helmet to take a bite of one of the muffins.
"Say, Attila, if you don't mind me asking, why do you wear that helmet?" Varian inquired.
"I have scars from a fire when I was little," Attila explained. "They messed up my face and scare people more than when I'm wearing the helmet. Plus, the helmet was something my dad and I made together before…" He trailed off, leaving the rest unsaid, but the others could guess what had happened.
"I'm so sorry, Attila," Rapunzel said, placing a comforting hand on his shoulder.
"Things were tough growing up, but whenever my dad and I had time to play, we would make our own armor with pots and pans and play knights and bandits together. It made the hard times a little easier," he said, lightly touching his helmet.
Quirin smiled softly. "If you'd like, Attila, I have supplies for maintaining and restoring damaged and rusty armor. If you feel more comfortable in your armor than in baker's attire, we can clean it up to enhance your image."
"Oh, thank you, sir!" Attila nodded gratefully.
"My pleasure. Now, let's get down to business. Varian mentioned you want to move your bakery from the Capital?"
"Yes, sir," Attila replied, nodding.
"Attila is really talented at baking!" Rapunzel chimed in.
"We just don't have a great location," Varian explained.
"I see. Well, why don't you show me what you can do?" Quirin said, gesturing toward the kitchen. "If you can demonstrate that you bake well, I'll consider location options for your bakery here and contact the King for the necessary forms."
Attila nodded and stood up. "I'll start right away!"
"Then, let's get started." Quirin walked over to the oven, and Attila followed him.
"Let's go sit in the living room and wait," Varian suggested as he stood up. "Or we could explore the village or do something else?"
"Yeah, let's give the artist some privacy," Eugene joked while they followed him.
Rapunzel gave the teenager a grateful hug. "Thank you for this, Varian. You have no idea how long he's been wanting this!"
Varian smiled. "I'm glad I could help."
"Hey, Goggles, what's this room over here?" Eugene asked, peering into another room off the living room.
"Oh, that's the music room."
"Music room?" Rapunzel asked, intrigued. Varian smiled before leading her deeper into the house.
The music room was off the living room and about half its size. It wasn't packed wall to wall with instruments but featured a piano and several string instruments hanging on the walls. There was also a flute, tambourine, accordion, and other instruments on various shelves alongside music books.
Eugene whistled in admiration. "Nice setup here, Hairstripe."
"This was mostly my mom's spot," Varian said, feeling nostalgic as he surveyed the room. "While alchemy and inventing were her main professions, she had a passion for music. We haven't used this space in a while, though. We just make sure to keep it clean."
"Do you know how to play any of these?" Rapunzel asked, running her hand over the piano keys.
"Most of them," he replied, sitting at the piano. He plunked a few keys to see if it was still in tune. "When I was younger, I found some of Mom's music books and taught myself to play. Dad was less nervous about this than he was about getting into her lab."
"I see," Rapunzel said as she walked over and picked up a flute. "Do you wanna have a jam session while we wait for Attila?"
"Sure," he smiled. "You start, and I'll join in."
"Okay! Wanna join, Eugene?"
"I'm not much of a musician, but I'll be your audience," Eugene offered as he settled down to watch the performance.
"Alright!" Rapunzel began to play a tune, and after a moment, Varian readily joined in, playing along with her melody. She danced around the room with Pascal perched on her shoulder. After a minute, Eugene changed his mind and picked up the tambourine, keeping time with the beat. Ruddiger wandered into the room from wherever he had been and danced around her feet as she twirled while Varian's fingers glided across the keys in perfect harmony.
They soon finished the song, and the boys applauded Rapunzel. "That's my girlfriend! A woman of many talents!"
"That was beautiful, Rapunzel!" Varian agreed. "I didn't know you could play the flute!"
"I just haven't played in a while," she admitted. "The last time I did, well…" She glanced away in embarrassment while Eugene covered his mouth to stifle a laugh.
"What's so funny?" Varian asked, furrowing his brows, clearly puzzled.
"Well, there was an event I was competing in with Cass. One of the competitions involved dancing, and I got bored, so I started playing the flute, which embarrassed her when she tried to make me stop. Then, I did it again while we were on horseback. Maximus started dancing around, and Cass got knocked off Fridella and fell into a mud puddle… right in front of my parents and several visiting queens," Rapunzel explained, looking sheepish.
"Visiting queens…?" Varian wondered, realizing what she meant. "Wait, was this the Contest of the Crowns a few months ago? I helped Xavier set up one of the events. Didn't Ingvarr win?"
"Yeah, Cass let them win to help me, but I embarrassed her during that contest…" Rapunzel looked a bit guilty. "Anyway, I haven't played since I've been so busy with other things. I still feel bad about some of that…" she admitted offhandedly.
"Hey, it's okay, Sunshine," Eugene said as he came over to comfort her. "You two talked it out and moved on. You don't have to feel bad about it anymore. It's one of those things you just laugh off as a funny memory."
"Eugene's right, Rapunzel," Varian said, joining them. "We all make mistakes; I speak from experience. What's important is that you learn from them. Little mistakes here and there are normal, healthy even. It's part of growing up."
"And you didn't get to grow up normally, so you're still learning," Eugene said, taking her hands in his. "And you're not alone in this. I grew up in a way where I had to put my needs first to stay alive, much less get ahead. So, I'm still learning how to stop and think about how others are affected by my choices, like what happened at the coronation…"
"Oh, Eugene," Rapunzel smiled sympathetically. "It's okay. I was never mad; I would've said yes under different circumstances. It just didn't feel like the right time."
"I understand," Eugene replied with a smile. "Rapunzel, I know things aren't easy right now, but I want you to know I'll always be there for you. You're my friend, my light, my love, my other half, and the reason I want to become a better person." He gently cupped her cheek. "And that will never change."
She smiled and leaned closer, gently kissing him as they embraced. She sighed when she slowly broke the kiss and tilted her head onto his shoulder. "Thank you," she said softly.
He smiled and hugged her tighter. "You can always count on me."
Neither of them noticed Varian slipping out of the room during their conversation. Varian smiled quietly from outside the music room before turning and walking to the stairs, thinking the couple should have some time alone. Quirin noticed him heading upstairs, but Varian didn't see him. He continued to his old room, sitting on his bed and gazing at his childhood space.
"Things were so easy back then…" he muttered, feeling nostalgic as he remembered a time before the Moonlight Phantom existed. "Where does the time go?"
"Varian?" Quirin asked, causing his son to jolt and look at him. "Everything okay?"
"Yeah, I'm fine," Varian sighed, smiling at his dad. "Rapunzel and Eugene started having a serious conversation, so I thought I should give them some space. I was just thinking."
"I see," Quirin nodded as he moved into the room to sit beside his son. "What were you thinking about?"
"Just how much has changed since Rapunzel came home. If someone had told me I would become such good friends with the Princess that her dad would give me my own room and lab at the castle, I would've laughed."
"Yeah…" Quirin said, sadness crossing his face. "Till death do us part came sooner than it should have…"
"Dad?" Varian said, looking at his father seriously. "Andrew recognized Mom's name in her journals. He told me about her heritage… that I'm part Saporian."
Quirin tensed slightly but allowed his son to continue. "I'm not mad that you kept it from me. I know things weren't easy for Saporians in this kingdom who were open about their heritage. I'm just glad I know now. Hearing about her makes me feel closer to Mom, like I finally got to know her."
Suddenly, his father pulled him into a hug, surprising Varian. "I'm sorry…" he said softly, his voice wavering, causing Varian's eyes to widen. "I should've told you about her sooner. I should've been a better father."
Varian returned his father's hug, not noticing the tears in his father's eyes. "It's okay, Dad. You were always there when I needed you the most. That's what matters."
(Back downstairs)
Attila finished a batch of his delicious bimberry cupcakes, and everyone gathered around the table to taste one. He felt slightly nervous about Varian and Quirin's reactions, but Rapunzel was confident he'd win their approval. Everyone had a cupcake, and it was clear that Varian enjoyed them, though Quirin kept his feelings close to his chest. Still, he offered subtle signs of approval that gave Attila hope.
Once all the cupcakes were gone, Quirin wiped his lips with a napkin and stood up. "Well, then. Let's look around and see which building you'd like to have as your bakery and home." He smiled.
Attila looked stunned. "Home?"
"Welcome to Old Corona, Attila." Varian smiled, confirming he had passed the test.
"Gosh…" the baker thug breathed, speechless. "I haven't had a 'home' in a long time… not a permanent one."
"Well, now you will." Quirin smiled as he walked toward the door. "Come on."
Attila nodded and got up, following him out.
"They can take it from here if you guys want to go," Varian said, watching them leave. "Once they arrange everything, you'll get the notice."
"Will people be okay with him living here?" Rapunzel asked, remembering what happened in the Capital.
"Don't worry," Varian assured her. "As long as he doesn't blow anything up or mess up the crops, he'll be fine. That's the difference between here and the city. As long as you don't cause trouble now, no one cares about the past."
"You would know, kid?" Eugene said with a smirk.
Varian shrugged. "There are definitives in alchemy. At least no one got hurt."
"Well, that's good!" Rapunzel smiled.
"Well, if we're done here, should we go?" Eugene asked. "We left Cassandra and Andrew to watch Attila's store in the Capital."
"Yeah, we should get back to them," Rapunzel said, smiling. "I'll let Dad know that Attila is moving his bakery, and I'll get those forms ready!"
"Don't worry, Rapunzel, my dad will handle that. It's his job," Varian grinned. "We can go do something else."
"Yeah, you're right. I'm going to ask Attila if he wants us to stick around and give him a ride back." She stood up and hurried out of the manor.
Eugene watched her go, then looked at Varian. "Say, you disappeared while we were jamming. Everything alright?"
"Yeah, I'm okay," Varian said. "You guys looked like you needed some alone time based on where the conversation was headed. I went to my room to decompress, and my dad checked in on me."
"Did anything happen?"
"We talked. I told him I knew more about Mom," Varian said. "She was Saporian."
"Really?" Eugene's eyes widened.
"Yeah. She was also from a village in Pittsford and had a twin brother. And look at this." Varian reached into his shirt and pulled out a necklace like Andrew's. "This was my mom's necklace. Lockets like these are traditional in Saporian culture. After Dad and I talked, he showed me where he had hidden it behind Mom's picture. He said she would've wanted me to have it."
"I'm glad you got to talk about it."
"Dad even said that when I'm a bit older, we can go visit her family," Varian added as he tucked the locket back into his shirt and walked to the sink to start on the dishes.
Eugene smiled before going over to help him. "I'm happy for you, Varian. I really am."
"Thanks, Eugene."
(The next day)
Attila had decided to stay at the pub once he and Quirin were finished, so Rapunzel, Eugene, and Varian took the balloon back to Corona. They helped Cass and Andrew lock up Attila's soon-to-be old shop, and they all returned to the castle for the night. The next day, Rapunzel, Varian, and Eugene went to Attila the Bun to help pack the place up. "I thought it would be helpful if we packed up Attila's shop here so we can start moving once he chooses his place."
"Wow," Eugene chuckled to her. "You're really committed to this."
"I'm just tired of cutting ribbons, and hosting parties, and making appearances."
"Well, Blondie, a statesperson's work is never done," Eugene replied.
"Being a statesperson is fine, Eugene, but I wanna do things that really matter to the people of Corona. Like helping Attila," she explained with a smile.
"It sounds like you want to make a bigger difference in people's lives," Varian suggested.
"Exactly." When they reached the shop, the princess gasped sharply.
"Oh no…"
Monty's shop had been completely vandalized. The window was shattered, the door lay in pieces, and the sign was knocked off. Eugene picked up what remained of the sign, puzzled.
"What… happened?"
"Someone was in a hurry to get out of there…" Varian remarked.
"'Get out?'" Rapunzel asked, perplexed.
"Yeah, you can tell from the wreckage," Varian pointed at the shards of the door and window. "Debris follows the path of the force that struck it. If someone broke in, then the debris would be inside the shop. Since it's outside, the force that caused the damage came from within."
"But who could've hidden in Monty's shop without him noticing?" Eugene asked.
"Hmm…" The alchemist mused in thought.
"Spread out and find him!" They heard someone shout, noticing some guards rushing by, including Stan and Pete.
"Whoa, whoa, guys! What's going on?" Eugene called out, causing them to stop.
"We have orders to find Attila and arrest him," Pete explained.
"What?! For what?!" Rapunzel exclaimed in shock.
"For vandalism. Captain's orders," Stan replied.
"Guys, there's no way Attila could've done this! He's been in Old Corona since yesterday, looking for a new spot for his bakery!" Eugene protested.
"And my dad can vouch for that!" Varian added.
The guards exchanged glances, confused. "Well, two of the guards saw him running away from the area before the vandalism was reported."
"Did the guards get a good look at him, or did they just assume it was him?" Varian questioned bluntly.
"You'd have to ask the guards who were there. We didn't arrive until the crime was reported," Pete replied.
The alchemist sighed in irritation. "Look, go tell the Captain that Attila has an alibi. I can get him and my father to come by later to give a statement, okay?"
The guards exchanged glances before agreeing. "Alright," Stan said, heading for the castle.
"What do we do?" Eugene asked the others.
"We better get to Old Corona and inform my dad about this," Varian suggested.
(A short time later)
Using the balloon, Rapunzel and the boys quickly gathered Attila and Quirin and explained the situation. With Quirin providing an alibi, they returned to the castle and gave a statement to the Captain in his office.
The Captain sighed before clearing his throat. "Clearly, there's been a mistake. As of now, the charges against Attila are dropped."
Rapunzel and the boys cheered as the princess happily hugged the thug, which he returned. "Thank you, Princess," Attila exclaimed as he embraced her and then hugged Varian. "And you too, Varian."
"No problem, Attila," Varian smiled. "Anything for a friend."
"Well then," Quirin said kindly. "Let's inform the King about your new location while we're here."
"Oh, right! We picked out my new place yesterday," Attila told the others excitedly. "I can't wait for you to see it!"
As they left, Rapunzel suggested, "After we talk to my father, we can start packing up your old store and moving everything to Old Corona."
"I can't thank you enough for this," Attila said. "I was starting to worry Attila the Bun was a mistake. I don't know nuthin' about running a business. I just wanna bake. That's my dream. But everyone was so proud, and I didn't wanna let anyone down."
"Well, don't worry about the business part. Everyone in Old Corona will be willing to help if you need anything," Quirin assured him.
"Thank you, Mr. Quirin."
"Like I said, if you don't cause trouble now, they won't care about the past," Varian smiled.
(Back in town)
After talking to King Frederic, everyone, along with Cass and Andrew, headed into town to help pack up Attila's store. They passed the remnants of Monty's shop, which was cordoned off as a crime scene while the candymaker tidied up a bit inside.
"Wow, you weren't kidding about the mess," Attila remarked upon seeing the damage. "Poor guy."
Rapunzel approached the Sweet Shoppe and peeked inside. "Do you need any help, Monty?"
"Oh, don't worry about me, Princess," Monty replied. "I'll have this cleaned up in no time once the investigation is finished."
"Here, Uncle Monty," Attila said as he approached, offering him some butternuts. "Consider it a thank you for welcoming me."
"Thank you, Attila," the candymaker smiled, accepting a treat. "And good luck in Old Corona."
"What even happened, Monty?" Varian inquired, still confused by the bold attack.
"I wish I knew, Varian. I closed up a little late last night, and there was nothing out of the ordinary. When I came in this morning, well…" He cringed at the damage surrounding him.
"I'm so sorry this happened, Monty," Rapunzel said as Varian glanced around.
"Oh, it's all right. I was thinking of remodeling anyway. Although I suppose, a few months ago, that thought would've never crossed my mind." He adjusted the award he had won from the Gopher Grab while Rapunzel looked at it sadly. Just then, she stepped in some syrup, jolting a bit, and Pascal slipped from her shoulder into the sticky mess, both of them getting stuck.
Eugene approached her, laughing softly. "Are you sure you don't wanna rethink the whole barefoot thing?" He held up a handkerchief while Rapunzel rolled her eyes in amusement.
"Whoever did this certainly caused a lot of damage," Andrew remarked as the rest of the group joined them.
"But I see what Varian means about the door shards," Cass observed, noting the mess outside as Rapunzel pulled Pascal from one of Monty's recipes.
"That's the part I don't understand," Varian said. "Monty mentioned he didn't notice anything unusual when he closed, and the evidence suggests that the attack came from the inside."
Just then, Attila smelled the air and cringed slightly. "Ugh, Shorty? You in here?" he called, recognizing the stench.
"Present."
Everyone blinked and looked at the rafters, where they found the old man half asleep.
"Why am I not surprised?" Varian deadpanned.
(A few days later)
It turned out that Shorty and Milton had dozed off in Monty's shop. When he closed for the night, the bell above the door rang, and since Milton hated bells, he went wild and wrecked the place. With that mystery solved, Monty began rebuilding his shop, with Rapunzel offering assistance to get it ready. He and Attila even talked about a business arrangement once they were up and running.
A few days later, the princess stood before another ribbon, smiling happily at the crowd gathered this time. "And it is with great pleasure that I introduce you to Attila the Bun's Bakery."
The princess cut the ribbon again, and the Snuggly Duckling thugs and the people of Old Corona cheered. Attila stood proudly beside her, looking a bit more polished. Thanks to Varian and Quirin's help, his helmet was no longer rusty, and his armor shone brighter. He resembled the knight he and his father used to pretend to be.
"I can't thank everyone enough for supporting my dream and helping it come true. Rapunzel, Varian, Mayor Quirin, everyone, thank you. Now, who wants a treat?" Attila led the way into the shop, with Elliot guiding a group of kids behind them and others eager to see the finished store.
Rapunzel smiled and walked over to Quirin as they watched from outside. "Thank you so much for doing this for him."
"He can consider himself a citizen of Old Corona now," he replied with a smile. "If he needs anything, he knows where to find me."
"Wow, you actually have a house now!" Big Nose said to Attila. "No more sleeping in the pub!"
"I know, it's amazing," Attila replied in awe.
"I'm sure he will thrive here," Quirin smiled.
"You have to try the butternuts," they heard Elliot tell his friends as Rapunzel looked inside to see the kids each taking a bimberry butternut. "They're delicious!"
"Say, Mary," Varian said to one of the girls, "Attila's friend, Vlad, is interested in unicorns like you."
"Really?" Mary looked at the giant thug in amazement.
"Uh-huh," he nodded. "I collect ceramic unicorns, and I even make some of my own."
"Oh, they sound so pretty!"
"You know, a few of the other thugs want to start their own businesses," Eugene said. "Toll is interested in becoming a florist, and Bruiser and Killer have been looking to open a shop for their knitting and sewing projects. Maybe we could have Fang come by to do puppet shows for the kids."
"I don't see why not," Varian agreed. "If they're interested, we can talk to my dad about it."
Rapunzel beamed with joy. She knew that Attila would thrive in Old Corona, finally able to pursue his dream. Who knows, maybe some of the other pugs could find their dreams, too.
And that's the end of the chapter. This had been done for a while, but I either wasn't satisfied with it or wasn't feeling well enough to post it. I'm feeling 70% better but still out of it.
Anyway, I'll return soon with my next chapter and more for A Tale of Two Realms. The poll to add Hugo will be open until the Queen for a Day chapters.
