Episode Three

(In the meeting room within the monastery, a captured and still Yeti has been laid out on the table. Around it stands the Doctor, Travers, Thomni, Princess, Victoria, Jamie and Khrisong. The Doctor is lifting a flap of fur in the centre of the Yeti's chest, revealing a spherical hole of metal within.)

VICTORIA: Nothing there.

DOCTOR: No, but there has been.

(As the Doctor reaches in, running his fingers around the rim, the Princess suddenly clutches her head in pain. The rhythmic beeping has returned.)

JAMIE: Princess?

DOCTOR: What's the matter?

PRINCESS: (Strained) The beeping… Its back. It's…moving…

THOMNI: Is she bewitched?! Possessed?!

KHRISONG: She must be destroyed!

DOCTOR & VICTORIA: No!

JAMIE: Try and I'll–

DOCTOR: Wait, wait.

PRINCESS: (Quietly) What are you…? Where are you?

VICTORIA: What's happening to her, Doctor?

(The Doctor comes around, to join the Princess.)

DOCTOR: Princess?

PRINCESS: Can't… Trying to…reach out. But if I do…it might get inside…my head.

DOCTOR: Don't let it, Princess. Protect your mind at all costs.

PRINCESS: But…the beeping…

DOCTOR: We'll find another way to find out what it is. But can you stop what is happening to you, lock your mind away, close yourself off from the telepathic influence?

PRINCESS: I'm trying…too close…

(And then suddenly the Princess relaxes again, the beeping gone along with the pain.)

DOCTOR: Princess?

PRINCESS: It's stopped.

VICTORIA: Are you all right?

PRINCESS: I will be in a moment.

THOMNI: Has the demon left her?

DOCTOR: There was no demon. (To Princess) You said something was moving.

PRINCESS: Yes.

DOCTOR: Is it still moving?

PRINCESS: I think so. It's hard… Oh, my head.

DOCTOR: It'll be all right, my dear. Why don't you try closing off your mind, get some rest?

PRINCESS: I can't, Doctor. And even if I do the premonitions will still come and force it open again. Besides, I need to keep an eye, or rather my mind, on whatever's going on.

DOCTOR: But it could be dangerous.

PRINCESS: Don't worry, I'm not going to reach out. But I can feel it near my mind. Perhaps I'll catch some of its thoughts.

DOCTOR: Or it might catch some of yours.

JAMIE: Does this thing know we're here?

PRINCESS: I honestly don't know.

JAMIE: What should we do, Doctor?

VICTORIA: Yes, I'd like to know that too.

DOCTOR: Well, while the Princess rests, I'd like to find out more about this supposed Yeti. Now, when Jamie captured it, he and the other warriors must have dislodged its control unit

JAMIE: Then it must still be lying out there.

DOCTOR: Precisely.

(The Doctor and Jamie go to leave but Khrisong steps into their path, blocking them.)

KHRISONG: Where are you going?

DOCTOR: To have a look outside the gates. I want that unit. Come on, Jamie.

KHRISONG: No. I will not allow it.

DOCTOR: But why not?

KHRISONG: I trust no one to leave the monastery. You say this creature is not a real Yeti.

TRAVERS: It's metal. It's been made.

KHRISONG: And sent against us. Why? Why does someone wish harm to the monks of Det-Sen. I will trust no stranger until these questions are answered.

JAMIE: Oh, but we're on your side. Have we not convinced you yet?

KHRISONG: I am convinced of nothing.

VICTORIA: The Doctor knows all about this sort of thing. Why not let him help you?

DOCTOR: Well, if you don't trust us at least send Thomni, or one of your other warriors.

KHRISONG: No. I will not allow the gates to be opened.

DOCTOR: If you want us to help you–

KHRISONG: I do not need your help! Thomni, guard them.

(Khrisong leaves the room, leaving Thomni by the door.)

DOCTOR: Oh, dear. A very obstinate man.

TRAVERS: Yes, well, that's that I suppose. Nothing we can do about it now. (Yawning) Well, I'll just go and get a bit of shut eye.

(Thomni let's Travers past as he leaves the room.)

VICTORIA: How are you feeling now, Princess?

PRINCESS: Better, thank you. But the Doctor's right, we have to get out there and find whatever was in the heart of that Yeti.

DOCTOR: Thomni, please let us past.

THOMNI: Sir, I have no choice. I must obey Khrisong.

JAMIE: Do you not realise the man's a wee bit daffy?

DOCTOR: Oh, I wouldn't say that, Jamie. He's just doing his duty as he sees it.

THOMNI: But I think he is mistaken not to trust you. There is much sense in what you say.

DOCTOR: Oh, thank you, Thomni.

(Victoria is examining the spherical hole in the centre of the Yeti.)

VICTORIA: Princess?

PRINCESS: Yes, Victoria.

VICTORIA: The place the Doctor said where the control unit would go, it's round.

PRINCESS: Yes, that's right.

(The Doctor and Jamie come over to join the Princess and Victoria by the Yeti.)

VICTORIA: Well, I wonder if that sphere Jamie and I found–

JAMIE: Hey, yes, that could fit in there no bother!

VICTORIA: What do you think, Doctor?

DOCTOR: Well, it's possible. I shall need to take another look at the thing. Where is it?

JAMIE: The Princess took it off me.

PRINCESS: And I give it to you, Doctor.

DOCTOR: Yes, and I gave it back to you.

PRINCESS: Did you?

DOCTOR & JAMIE & VICTORIA: Yes.

(The Princess pats herself down.)

PRINCESS: Well, I've not got it anymore.

JAMIE: Aye, but the Doctor definitely gave it to you. Remember, you put it to your ear like a seashell.

PRINCESS: Yes, I thought I heard a beeping.

DOCTOR: The same beeping you've been hearing, that's right. Well, that must be it, it's all coming together.

JAMIE: Aye, but where'd you leave it, Princess?

VICTORIA: The Buddha! The Buddha in the courtyard.

PRINCESS: Yes! The Buddha.

DOCTOR: The Buddha in the courtyard, of course. Oh now, please, Thomni. Please.

(Thomni stands aside, allowing the time travellers to pass. They all then race out into the courtyard, with Jamie reaching the Buddha statue first. But…)

JAMIE: It's not here, Doctor.

DOCTOR: But it has to be.

JAMIE: Are you sure you put it down here, Princess?

PRINCESS: Well, not entirely.

VICTORIA: No, you definitely did. Maybe someone picked it up. (Spots Ralpachan by the gate) Maybe that guard's taken it?

JAMIE: Aye, I'll ask him.

DOCTOR: No, Jamie, I'll handle this. A situation like this requires tact.

(The Doctor, Victoria and Thomni head over to the gate. Jamie is about to follow when he notices the Princess has turned back around.)

JAMIE: Everything all right, Princess?

PRINCESS: I thought… I thought I heard that beeping again.

JAMIE: In your head like?

PRINCESS: No. From the statue.

JAMIE: I didn't hear anything.

(The Princess turns to Jamie, disheartened.)

PRINCESS: I'm not going mad, am I, Jamie?

JAMIE: No madder than usual.

PRINCESS: (Smiling) Thank you, Jamie.

(The two then head over, joining the Doctor, Victoira, Thomni and Ralpachan.)

DOCTOR: (To Ralpachan) My friend left a silver sphere by the Buddha there.

RALPACHAN: Sphere?

VICTORIA: It's a shiny round thing, like a ball.

THOMNI: It's most important, have you taken it?

RALPACHAN: No, and if anyone had I should have seen them.

THOMNI: Ralpachan, who has passed through the courtyard?

RALPACHAN: Master Khrisong, but he touched nothing.

JAMIE: No one else?

RALPACHAN: The Englishman, Travers.

DOCTOR: Travers? Are you sure he didn't pick it up?

RALPACHAN: I am sure. He spoke only to Khrisong and now he is gone.

PRINCESS: Gone?

RALPACHAN: He said Khrisong had given him permission to leave.

JAMIE: That's not what he said to us.

PRINCESS: Where did he say this?

RALPACHAN: In the courtyard.

DOCTOR: And you overheard this for yourself?

RALPACHAN: No. They were standing too far for me to hear. And I was on watch.

THOMNI: Then he has tricked you!

JAMIE: Aye, he must have taken it.

DOCTOR: Yes, but why?

VICTORIA: Could he be the one that's doing it?

PRINCESS: No, of course not.

JAMIE: Why not?

PRINCESS: Because… Well, I don't know.

DOCTOR: (To Ralpachan) Are you sure he didn't take the sphere with him?

RALPACHAN: He took nothing.

JAMIE: I'll find his room and search it.

PRINCESS: But you won't find anything.

JAMIE: Aye, we'll see about that.

(Jamie hurries off up the stairs to the landing above.)

THOMNI: We must tell Khrisong what has happened.

DOCTOR: Yes, yes. But I think you're right not to suspect Travers, Princess.

PRINCESS: (Unsure) Why?

DOCTOR: Well, why come up here looking for Yeti if he'd built some himself. He's clearly determined to find the real thing, otherwise he'd be claiming ownership of what we have inside.

PRINCESS: But why leave?

VICTORIA: To find the real Yeti I should think.

PRINCESS: I hope he'll be all right out there, with the robot Yeti wondering around.

DOCTOR: He can look after himself, I'm sure. Right now, we need to find this sphere, wherever it's gotten to.

VICTORIA: One thing's for certain. It couldn't have moved on its own.

PRINCESS: What makes you say that?

VICTORIA: Well, it might be able to roll. But it can't do that unless someone pushes it.

DOCTOR: You're partly right, Victoria. But there are other ways of moving an object, not just by physical means. And stranger things are certainly happening here. Come on.

(The Doctor leads the Princess and Victoria back towards the meeting room.)

(Returning to the meeting room, the Doctor leads Thomni, the Princess and Victoria in. Inside, the Yeti is still on the table, only now with a ring of string around it, looping around several times. By the table stands Songsten, his eyes closed, while Khrisong turns towards those who have entered. However, upon entering, the Princess grips her suddenly tense head, which the Doctor misses.)

DOCTOR: Khrisong, I must speak with you.

KHRISONG: What is it?

DOCTOR: Have you given Travers permission to leave the monastery?

KHRISONG: Of course not.

DOCTOR: Well, he's gone.

KHRISONG: How?

DOCTOR: The guard at the gate said you'd given him permission.

KHRISONG: Did he? Very well. Come with me.

DOCTOR: It's about time you let me help you. I–

KHRISONG: Help? I want to make sure you don't disappear as well.

DOCTOR: Oh.

(Khrisong leaves with the Doctor. Victoria is about to follow when she notices the Princess rubbing her temples.)

VICTORIA: Princess? Is it that beeping again?

PRINCESS: (Strained) No. Something different this time… I can almost… It's trying to keep me out…

VICTORIA: What is?

THOMNI: You are in pain, Princess?

PRINCESS: (To Victoria) Some force… I'm not sure what it is, but… It's…It's communicating with someone…

VICTORIA: Talking, you mean?

PRINCESS: No, not talking. It's…It's telepathic. Talking through the mind, without using one's mouth.

VICTORIA: I don't understand.

PRINCESS: I'd demonstrate but– Oh, my head. It's pushing me down, keeping me from hearing what's going on.

VICTORIA: But who's it talking to.

PRINCESS: I don't know.

SONGSTEN: (To no one) Yes, master.

PRINCESS: But they must be nearby. They'll be…They'll be… I don't know. Talking to nobody.

VICTORIA: Like the Abbot?

PRINCESS: What?

VICTORIA: The Abbot, he just spoke to nobody.

THOMNI: No, he's in a trance. He does this when he speaks with the master.

PRINCESS: Master– Ow! No, not that Master, a different one… Oh, it's getting hard to keep it all straight.

THOMNI: He's merely asking for spiritual guidance.

SONGSTEN: I hear you, master. I am coming.

(With eyes still closed, Songsten walks from the room. And as he leaves, the Princess' headache lessens.)

VICTORIA: Where's he going?

THOMNI: To the Holy Sanctum.

PRINCESS: We have to follow him.

THOMNI: But it is forbidden. No one but the Abbot may enter.

PRINCESS: We have to–

(The Princess tries to move and collapses onto the floor, unconscious.)

VICTORIA: Princess?!

(Later, in the meeting room, the Princess stirs, rubbing her forehead.)

VICTORIA: Princess?

PRINCESS: Uh…?

VICTORIA: Are you awake?

PRINCESS: I don't know.

(The Princess sits up, having been sleeping on a bench. Victoria joins her, ready to catch her should she fall.)

PRINCESS: What happened? Where are we?

VICTORIA: We're in the Det-Sen monastery. You passed out. I'm not entirely sure what happened to be honest.

PRINCESS: I can't remember.

VICTORIA: You said something was talking to someone one. That some force was keeping you out.

PRINCESS: And this was before I passed out?

VICTORIA: You really don't remember?

PRINCESS: No. Sorry.

VICTORIA: What do you remember?

(The Princess has to think for a moment.)

PRINCESS: Det-Sen. We arrived at Det-Sen. I…I reached out, like I did back in the tombs. I tried to control my premonitions. Then… (Distant) I did. I did it to myself. Trapped in another circle. Why does this keep happening?

VICTORIA: Sorry.

(The Princess clutches at her head.)

VICTORIA: Are you all right? Should I fetch someone?

PRINCESS: No. No, it's just all coming back to me. Oh, bit of a head rush… Where's the Doctor?

VICTORIA: He and Jamie have gone to get something from the Tardis.

PRINCESS: Wonderful timing. Wait, where's my hat?

VICTORIA: I've got it here.

(Victoria hands over the Princess' top hat, at which point the Princess puts it back on her head.)

PRINCESS: Thank you. I'd better enjoy this while I have it. (Looks to Victoria) Sorry, I'm not scaring you, am I?

VICTORIA: No. I think I'm getting used to how you speak.

PRINCESS: That's good. I wouldn't want to be a cause of any anxieties you may have.

VICTORIA: Oh, you needn't worry about that. Not when there's so much else going on.

(Victoria looks nervously at the Yeti, still on the table with the string running around it.)

PRINCESS: Has it done anything?

VICTORIA: No. But I still don't like it.

PRINCESS: But he's so cuddly.

VICTORIA: You wouldn't say that after being chased by it. It was horrible.

PRINCESS: Well, we're safe now.

VICTORIA: Are we? You keep talking about something, a force that's all around us. And right before you passed out you thought it was communicating with the Abbot.

PRINCESS: I did.

VICTORIA: Yes, and you were saying we should follow him.

PRINCESS: Where was he going?

VICTORIA: Thomni called it, the Holy Sanctum.

PRINCESS: Huh… Do you think I was on to something?

(Victoria thinks for a moment.)

VICTORIA: Yes, I think you were.

PRINCESS: Well then, we'd better take a look inside that room.

VICTORIA: Thomni said it was forbidden.

PRINCESS: Oh. Is that going to stop us?

(Victoria thinks for a moment, before grinning cheekily.)

VICTORIA: No.

PRINCESS: I knew I liked you, Victoria Waterfield.

(The two then get up and exit the meeting room. They creep into the empty courtyard, looking around to make sure no one is about. There's a guard by the gate, but he's facing away from them and hasn't noticed.)

PRINCESS: Which way is it?

VICTORIA: (Pointing across courtyard) Over there I believe. Down the corridor.

PRINCESS: We'll go the long way around.

(Staying under the walkway above, the Princess and Victoria creepy the whole way round, going behind the Buddha statue as they head for the corridor pointed out by Victoria. The corridor leads between part of the building, where only a large set of wooden doors can be found.)

VICTORIA: It must be in there.

PRINCESS: Yes. Yes, it's coming back to me now. I remember–

RINCHEN: What are you doing?

(The Princess and Victoria jump, turning around to find Rinchen stood behind them, with a disapproving glare.)

VICTORIA: We were just looking around, that's all.

RINCHEN: The Holy Sanctum is forbidden to all.

PRINCESS: So no one knows what's inside there?

RINCHEN: No one but the Abbot.

VICTORIA: Aren't you curious?

(Rinchen stares at both the Princess and Victoria for a moment.)

RINCHEN: Come with me.

(Rinchen turns and leaves, expecting the Princess and Victoria to follow. After looking at each other, the two time travellers do so. Rinchen leads them back across the courtyard and into the meeting room, where Khrisong and Thomni are stood by the Yeti on the table.)

RINCHEN: Khrisong, you must guard these two. I found them both near the Sanctum.

VICTORIA: We didn't mean any harm.

RINCHEN: For their own good, it would be safer if they were closely guarded.

(Rinchen turns and leaves.)

PRINCESS: Was it me or did that sound like a threat?

VICTORIA: He certainly wasn't the friendliest.

PRINCESS: Sorry to bother you both, we'll just get out of the way.

(The Princess and Victoria turn to leave.)

KHRISONG: Stop. Thomni, take them to the cell, watch over them.

PRINCESS: Oh, not again.

VICTORIA: You're not going to lock us up, are you?

KHRISONG: No, so long as you both behave.

PRINCESS: (Muttering) There's always a catch.

(A short while later, Victoria and the Princess enter the cell with Thomni stood by the open door.)

VICTORIA: I suppose everyone thinks we're a nuisance.

PRINCESS: They wouldn't be completely wrong.

VICTORIA: Princess.

PRINCESS: Sorry.

(With a disapproving look, Victoria sits down on the bed of straw.)

THOMNI: We are concerned for your safety, as you well know.

(The Princess picks up the stool and takes it to the window.)

PRINCESS: Heard that one before. You know, I don't feel I'm doing princesses any favours by being locked up in a tower like this. This is how fairy tales start, you know? And rumours.

(As the Princess climbs the stool, she is reminded that last time she needed the Doctor to see out the window.)

VICTORIA: You're not really going to lock us up in this beastly room, are you?

THOMNI: No, I don't think that will be necessary. But you must promise to behave and not cause trouble.

VICTORIA: What do you mean?

THOMNI: I think perhaps you are a little too inquisitive, Ms Victoria.

VICTORIA: Me? I just don't like mysteries.

(The Princess climbs down from the stool.)

PRINCESS: She's very nosey. It's one of the things I love most about her.

VICTORIA: (To Thomni) Your master, for instance–

THOMNI: I have told you there are some things that you should not ask.

VICTORIA: Oh, all right, I'm sorry.

PRINCESS: Which master's this?

VICTORIA: The one in the Holy Sanctum.

THOMNI: This is not a matter for discussion.

VICTORIA: Do we have to stay here?

THOMNI: Yes, you heard Khrisong's orders. (Sighs) Oh, please, forgive me. I'm being a very bad host. Would you care for some food?

VICTORIA: No, thank you.

PRINCESS: Some water would be nice, thank you, Thomni.

(Thomni leaves. And a few seconds later…)

VICTORIA: Oh, well done, Princess!

PRINCESS: What?

VICTORIA: You managed to send him away. Now we can sneak down to the Sanctum.

PRINCESS: That's a good idea. I wished I'd thought of it.

VICTORIA: You mean, you didn't plan this?

PRINCESS: No. I was just thirsty.

VICTORIA: Oh, well... Come on.

(Victoria leads the way out with the Princess behind her.)

PRINCESS: Isn't it nice when things work out.

(A short while later, the Princess and Victoria have crept into the corridor leading to the Sanctum.)

THOMNI: (Calling out) Ms Victoria! Princess! Ms Victoria!

PRINCESS: Sounds like our absence has been noticed.

VICTORIA: It won't take them long to realise we've come here. Thomni already knows we're interested in this place.

PRINCESS: Best get a quick peak then.

(The Princess goes to open the Sanctum door…)

PADMASAMBHAVA: (From nowhere) It were better that you were not found in here, my friend.

(Victoria jumps back with fright, while the Princess is frozen in shock.)

VICTORIA: W-Who's that?

PADMASAMBHAVA: The monks will look upon you and your friend's presence here as sacrilege.

PRINCESS: But that's…

(Suddenly the Princess grips her head in pain, once again.)

VOICE: (From nowhere, hissing) Go!

PRINCESS: (Strained) N…No…

VOICE: You must leave!

PRINCESS: Who…Who are…you? What…do you…want?

VICTORIA: Princess, what's happening?

VOICE: You must not interfere!

PRINCESS: With…what…? Wait… I…I can see…see…

(The rhythmic beeping noise returns, and a look of realisation comes across the Princess' face.)

PRINCESS: The sphere!

VICTORIA: Princess–?

PRINCESS: We have to get to the Yeti, come on!

(The Princess turns and runs across the courtyard, with a confused Victoria running after her. They charge into the meeting room, both stopping as they see the floating sphere lowering itself into the Yeti.)

PRINCESS: Quick, we have to get it out!

(The Princess runs forward but the Yeti is already sitting up. Victoria screams as the Yeti, with one arm, knocks aside the Princess.)

VICTORIA: Princess!

(Victoria runs to the Princess, trying to get her up as the Yeti stands up, snapping the strings around the table in the process. Now looming over the two, the Yeti advances towards Victoria and the Princess…)
