"Look! It's Potter!"
"Where!? Where!?"
"Next to the other Weasley!"
"Doesn't look like much."
"Whatever, he doesn't HAVE to. He's Harry Potter..."
By the time Harry had taken less than ten steps across the halls he already felt as though he was making a horrible mistake as he kept his head down, wondering what he should do with his hands and finally settling on putting them in his robe pockets.
"Wow, it's like you're famous around here!" Freya stage whispered grinning before looking at him with wide eyes, "Oh, wait a minute-!"
He shoved her lightly as she let out a light laugh in which he had to grin despite himself. Harry was happy that Freya seemed to get over his celebrity title so quickly and unlike everyone else who seemed to talk to him with slight hesitation, almost as if they wanted to make sure they didn't offend him (which was new), Freya seemed to razz him in the same way her brothers did.
"What do you think Charms will be like?" he questioned as they walked, following other first- year Gryffindors towards the class. "Did your brothers ever say anything about it?"
"They said that was the one class that you actually get to use your magic first off!" She said giddily as they entered the classroom. She whispered, "Professor Flitwick is supposed to be brilliant too...just don't mention his height."
"Why? Is he really tall?" Harry asked setting his things next to her as he thought of Hagrid, "I've probably already seen bigger."
"No, he's um, well he's kind of-"
"Hello, class! Please take your seats!"
Harry turned to see the teacher entering. Then frowned as he looked to see nobody. Maybe he's invisible He thought excitedly, or he's...ah.
Harry blinked as he watched their teacher clamber up a stool and then balanced himself on a stack of books as he looked at them all through his glasses and smiled, "Yes students! I am considered somewhat small!"
There were sniggers behind them and Harry turned to see Draco and his posse keeping in laughter as they looked at their teacher. Freya, who was beside him, rolled her eyes before turning back to Flitwick as she muttered to Harry, "They're in our class for today since Flitwick will be out during their class time, and the Defense and the Dark Arts teacher apparently needed more time to prepare. Something about how he had to get over his stage fright?"
"Now, attendance!" Flitwick said happily as he opened a scroll and began. "Lavender Brown?"
"Here!"
"Vincent, Crabbe?"
Crabbe grunted.
"Granger, Will?"
"Present!" Will replied holding his hand in the air.
Freya looked at Will and back at Malfoy before turning to Harry with a disbelieving look.
"Goyle, Gregory?"
Goyle raised his meaty hand.
"Malfoy, Draco?"
"Here."
"Potter...Harry?" Flitwick said hesitantly before looking up excitedly, "Ooo, do we have Harry Potter?"
Harry raised his hand slightly and Flitwick gave a little gasp of excitement, "Well, isn't that a treat?" Harry winced, but thankfully he began going down the list again quickly.
"Bet that felt good, didn't it Potter?" Malfoy whispered coolly from the back of them.
"Oh, don't feel bad Malfoy," Freya whispered turning her head to smile at him, "I heard a few people gasp when your name was called as well or maybe it was just me. It was a gasp of disgust, mind you, but at least you were acknowledged."
"Shut it, W-"
"Weasley, Freya?"
Freya turned and raised her hand quickly as Flitwick fixed his glasses to look at her, "Hmm, another one? Well, that's wonderful! I found all your brothers delightful, even the twins. It'll be exciting to see what Mrs. Freya Weasley has to offer."
She smiled back at him, but it seemed just a bit strained.
"Now, we can all get into partners... let's see since it's the first week so you all wouldn't mind if I didn't mix the two houses, yes?"
He gazed out on all of their stricken faces and gave a tired chuckle, "Yes, I know I know...so let's start assigning partners, yes?"
To Harry's satisfaction, he was put into a group with Dean as they grinned at one another and began working as Freya made room, much to her dissatisfaction and Harry's amusement, for her partner Will.
"Harry, Dean." Will said giving them a nod as he sat down next to Freya and looked at her disinterestedly and said, "So, I'll take it that you have read the chapter?"
"As a matter of fact, I did." She replied, skimming the chapter very quickly as she said this.
"Oh? So you know the spell we're doing then."
Freya opened her mouth then closed it as she held up a finger in a 'wait' signal and she continued flipping through the pages.
"I didn't, my aunt and uncle are muggles you see, so they wouldn't allow-in their words-'wizarding rubbish' being read in their house," Harry said to Will and then felt his face go hot, what if it sounds like I'm only making excuses?
But to Harry's relief Dean and Will nodded as Dean put in, "Yeah, some muggles will be like that with their wizarding kids, not wanting to accept there's a world within their own."
Will nodded, "My parents-"
"Wingardium Leviosa!"They turned to Freya who had her finger pointed to a spot in her textbook and was holding her wand at ready, "That's the spell."
"Oh, and that took you how long?" Will asked her as she glared. "Anyway, enough with the idle chit-chat, we're being graded on this you know."
As they began Harry realized there was much more to magic than saying the spell and waving his wand, how it needed to be said in a specific way, and the specific movements that had to be made.
"Wingadium Leviosa!" Freya said as she waved her wand in a circular motion, but the feather didn't move.
"You're saying it all wrong." Will told her impatiently as he watched, "You're supposed toswish and flick and its not "Wing-God-EE-um Levio-SAH, it's Wing-AAR-dium Levi-O-sa."
"Well, you do it if you're so smart."
"Fine, I will."
Sitting up straighter Will pointed his wand at the feather and said, "Wingardium Leviosa!"and they all watched as the feather went up and then higher.
Freya looked at the feather and blew on it frustrated as Will cried "Hey!" and rose the feather higher out of her reach.
"Lookit that everyone! Mr. Granger has done it!" Flitwick said excitedly as they all still watched the feather fly around until Will let it land back on their desk smoothly. "10 points to Gryffindor!"
Dean high-fived Will over Harry as Harry turned over to grin at him happily until he got sight of Freya's irritated expression, and he shrugged apologetically.
"Ha," the cool voice carried from his seat a little behind them as they all turned to see Malfoy, his gaze on Freya. "Seems like we can take 'the smart one' off the list of what you are in your family. Granted, that spotwasalready taken."
"You're so right, Malfoy, but what's even more surprising is that in your familynobodyholds the title ofnot beingan obnoxiousgit,"Freya smiled, her jaw clenched in a way that implied she was baring her teeth instead. "And yet here you are, perfectly okay with being a copy and pastedprat."
There were snickers as Malfoy's pale complexion was tinged with pink as he shook his head, staring daggers down at Freya.
"Would you quit that?" Will said, and Freya turned to him, her features softening in surprise before her eyes widened, shocked at the fact her gaze was meeting his and his words were meant for her. "No need to create animosity between our houses."
"He insultedmefirst," Freya hissed, outraged.
"So, you chose to stoop to his level?"
"Of course I did," Freya snapped. "You get a more accurate hit in on level ground, wasn't that common knowledge to you, you bloody know-it-all?"
Will opened his mouth but shut it as Flitwick has begun eyeing their side. Shaking his head, he flipped a page in his textbook, immersing himself in his readings as he made it clear he was ignoring her from now on.
Freya looked over his hunched figure to gape over at Dean and Harry in a way that said:Can you believe him?
They each shot her a sympathetic look in turn.
"Oooh, that Will Granger!" Freya fumed as they got out of class, "He's almost worse than Malfoy because we see him more often!"
"Worse than Malfoy? Now don't be rude." Harry chided grinning as they jumped over the set of missing stairs. "I don't think of him as that bad, he's sort of obnoxious yes, but not bad."
"He's as obnoxious as Malfoy, but him being so smart just gives him more of a reason to be and it's annoying." She said irritated as they waited for the staircase to move in the other direction. "Bloody hell Harry, mark my words, if we ever find someone worse than those two I'll...I'll kiss Neville's toad."
"That would be something to witness." Harry laughed as they entered the dungeons where their next class would be held. "But I wouldn't worry, I don't know about Will but there can't be anyone more grating than Malfoy."
And with that, they entered the room in which Potions would be held.
