Chapter 1: Moving Away
Ron Stoppable was busy sealing up the last few boxes littering his room, the young man had finished the vast majority of his packing a few days ago. Ron was putting on the finishing touches, before he moved out of his room entirely. The rest of the house was in much the same state, with more boxes being packed up by five different guys.
The blonde teen exited the home, staring at the big moving truck parked few feet away.
His parents were both standing next to the family car, chatting away about something. His mother noticed Ron, waving him over.
"Ron, are you finished with the rest of your things?" the older woman asked.
"Yeah, everything's ready to go…" he replied in a disheartened tone. It was no secret that the blonde teen wasn't a fan of this recent development.
"Cheer up, Ron. This might seem like a bad thing at first… But, if you give it a chance-" his father began to reassure.
"I know, you've already told me…" Ron didn't add that his old man had continued repeating those empty tropes all week long, in the hope of making this change more bearable for him. Sadly… it only made everything worse.
A few minutes later, the moving truck was all loaded up. Ron prepared to enter the car, where his parents were waiting.
"Ron, wait!" shouted a familiar voice.
Ron froze, his head turning to see the one person he'd hoped to talk to before it was too late.
"KP!" he called back, as Kim ran up to him.
"I-I made it!" she stuttered, stopping completely next to the blonde. "I-" There were so MANY things she needed to say to him. Her best friend, the most important person in the world to her. "I still can't believe you're moving away…" Kim groaned.
"I know…" the blonde replied, his parents calling out him that they needed to get going.
"Well, I guess this is it…" Kim whispered. A small creature popped out of her pocket, rushing onto the blonde's shoulder.
The two had decided that Rufus would be staying with Kim, to help her out on missions, while Ron was away. The two hugged each other for a few seconds. Finally, Ron turned around.
'Just TELL him, you won't get a second chance!' her mind screamed at her, both angry and panicked. But, in the end, all she could do was watch as he entered the car and drove off with his family.
"Goodbye, Ron…" Kim moaned. She had failed to say what she'd really wanted, had even forgot to give him the special Ronunicator that Wade had made for him. …all because she'd stayed in bed and took her time.
The redhead had never wanted this to come to pass, the day Ron had to go and move away…
In her foolishness, Kim had decided to wait until the last possible moment before going to see him. In the end, she'd paid for it. Kim only hoped that she'd be able to see Ron soon… and confess how she felt about him.
X-=-=-=-=-=-=-X
A few days had passed since the move. Ron was already on his way to his new school, the blonde's pack upon his back. He walked along, enjoying the sunny and pleasant morning that seemed to be the default weather for this area.
…
"We're moving… where?" the blonde asked his parents.
"To California, Ron! Or, more precisely, Beverly Hills! I thought we already told you before…"
…
Even though they'd already informed him, it still seemed completely off the rails to Ron for his family to move here… of all places.
From what he'd gathered, his father had obtained a very wealthy new client that needed the Stoppables to relocate near them.
But despite their new, huge house, his big room, the very pleasant scenery… Ron couldn't help but feel incredibly down at the prospect of being so far away from his best friend for the foreseeable future.
'She'll be fine… she has Rufus…' he reassured himself. Ron arrived at the very big, extremely luxurious school. 'Sheesh… overcompensation much?' This building was WAY bigger than his old school.
Ron walked past the entrance, instantly taking notice of the many other students milling around. Most of them looked like rich kids… in the "Bonnie" sort of way.
'No, don't think like that… It's not fair to judge them before I've even talked to anyone…' the Stoppable teen admonished himself. He walked past a decorative fountain, noticing a few students parked around it.
A few girls were sitting at the foot of the fountain, staring longingly at a blonde boy playing his guitar.
'Oh God… not another Josh Mankey…' Ron joked silently to himself, completely ignoring his surroundings.
Suddenly he was knocked down, his bag acting as a cushion between himself and the ground.
"Wha!" exclaimed the person who'd tackled Ron, before falling right on top of him.
There was a sudden silence in the area, most students staring at what had occurred for a few moments, before everyone returned to their original business.
"What hit me?" Ron asked aloud, glancing down at his chest to see a head of bright blonde hair obscuring his vision.
"Ow… that was so uncool…" groaned his 'attacker'. She started to shift, before looking straight at him.
Bright blue eyes stared right into his own chocolate orbs, she opened her mouth. "You're not the hot blonde I had in mind…" she pouted.
"I hope not…" Ron shot back, a bit of annoyance in his tone.
"Clover! Are you okay?" asked two girls approaching the pair of blondes.
Ron didn't bother glancing at the newcomers, instead keeping his attention focused on the blonde staring up at him. "Do you mind getting off me?" Ron asked. This was NOT how he'd wanted to start his first day!
"Oh, right, sorry!" the blonde apologized, standing up.
Ron got to his feet, continuing to glare at the blonde girl who'd ran into him out of nowhere. Two other girls walked over and inspected their friend, before staring at him.
"Are you okay?" asked a redheaded girl, who appeared to be friends with the yellow missile that had tackled him.
Ron looked at her for a few moments, before glancing away. "Yeah, I'm fine…" He couldn't help himself, someone who looked so much like Kim was talking to him. He would have to get over these feelings quickly.
Ron was about to walk away when the "yellow bullet" simply slid right by him, moving to sit next to the boy who was (once again) playing his guitar.
'Ahh… so THAT'S the one she was aiming for…' The sidekick felt cheated, realizing that he'd taken that hit for some other guy. 'Well, whatever…' Ron started to leave, noticing the blonde who'd tackled him was now arguing with some raven-haired girl.
The situation was eerily reminiscent of Bonnie and Kim's verbal skirmishes, even if both of these girls were smiling the whole time as they bickered. 'So, is SHE the "Bonnie" around here?' Ron speculated, before voting to stay away from both of them. He didn't want his time here to be any more painful than it already was.
The blonde girl seemed to walk away, very subtly pushing her leg in between the ravenette's own… causing her to fall backwards towards the fountain.
"Oops… sorry Mandy!" the blonde missile gloated with a small smirk… before noticing that the girl she'd tripped was still perfectly dry, not soaked to the bone.
"What? Ah…" The ravenette teen was staring at the boy now cupping her back, holding Mandy up out of the water below.
As soon as Ron noticed the little stunt that blonde girl was trying to pull, he realized what was about to happen and reacted as he and Kim always did.
The sidekick moved quickly from his spot, stopping the girl from falling. Ron held her steady for a moment, before he started to slowly push her away from the fountain.
"Careful there, you almost fell in…" Ron remarked, before letting her petite body go… only now noticing the girl's continued silence.
'Crap… why do I always do this?' He wanted to facepalm, but chose to simply walk away. However, not before shooting a furrowed brow at the blonde girl who'd caused this mess in the first place.
'Maybe I was WRONG… it seems like the only "Bonnie" around here is that rude, blonde girl…' Ron growled silently.
…
"Mandy, are you okay?" asked a few of the girls surrounding the ravenette teen. She remained silent, still too shocked to talk for some reason.
Off to the side, Clover and her two friends had decided to leave the scene and move on to class. …but, not before they got some answers from their friend.
"Why did you try to push her?" asked the redhead on her right.
"Excuse me?" Clover shot back, eyebrow raised.
"We SAW what you did… Did you really have to do that over a boy?"
"Sam, I'm telling you it was an accident! …even if she deserved it. And besides, nothing happened… right?" Clover answered, not at all sorry about what she'd done. But, she WAS a little peeved about losing her perfect opportunity to take Mandy down a few pegs.
"Yeah, but only because that guy stopped her from taking a dive!" exclaimed the ravenette girl on Clover's left. "I wonder who he was…"
"Alex is right… I don't think I've seen him around him before…" Sam added.
"So he's a new student, who cares?" Clover scoffed. All three friends sat down on a secluded bench, away from any other students.
"Oh, come on… are you still feeling bummed about Damian and Mandy going out?" Alex asked.
"I mean, how can I not be!? You saw what kind of hottie he is! And I have this crazy thing for musicians!" the blonde teen swooned, for the umpteenth time.
"We know…" both Sam and Alex chorused dryly, before the bench they were all sitting on was swallowed by the ground. The three girls all vanished from sight, their surprised screaming the only thing left behind.
X-=-=-=-=-=-=-X
Finished with his classes for the day, Ron was now walking around campus. Few of the other students paid much attention to him, or felt the need to pry into his backstory, much to his relief. Most of the teenagers were already mingling in groups, or just hanging with their friends.
The blonde sidekick didn't feel like making any friends at the moment… It would have felt wrong to just walk up and start talking to someone new. Like he was trying to replace Kim, or something.
'If I said that to KP, she'd not be pleased…' the boy mused to himself. Ron's best friend would most likely tell him to use this chance to make some new friends while he was here, she was just amazing like that!
"Hey, you!" someone called out, Ron stopped and turned his head. Most likely they weren't looking for him, but he felt compelled to look anyway.
A raven-haired girl came to a stop, standing right in front of him. Her face was flushed with a bit of color and she seemed a bit winded, for some reason.
The young Stoppable took a second to recognize the same girl he'd helped that morning, the one Ron had mistaken for the "Bonnie" of his new school. 'Her name was… Mandy?' he recalled overhearing. However, he decided against greeting a girl he'd never been introduced to by name. The last thing Ron wanted to do was come off looking like a creep!
"Me?" he questioned, turning to properly face the girl.
"I-I finally found you…" She took a moment to catch her breath, Ron stared at her with a raised eyebrow.
"You… were looking for me?" the boy verified, honestly a bit confused. Had he done something wrong?
"Y-Yes… I-I didn't get the chance to thank you for helping me b-back there… You know, at the fountain?" Mandy explained, a bit of an embarrassed smile upon her face.
"Oh, that!" Ron exclaimed with a small grin. 'So, it's just something innocent. I guess I was worried for nothing…' Ron couldn't help but be glad to have run into such a pleasant girl, it was a nice change of pace from the usual mean-girl type he was used to dealing with. "It was nothing, really! I was just passing by, don't worry about it-"
"No, I really am grateful for it!" she insisted, shouting over Ron's downplay. "I figured that I should repay the favor…"
'Wow, she's so nice!' the blonde teen marveled, he couldn't help but smile. "Um… I don't really need any-"
"Are you new here?" the girl asked. "I've never noticed you before, so-"
"I actually moved here a few days ago, today is my first day…" Ron replied hurriedly. He wasn't sure why he felt the need to explain himself to the girl, wasn't he trying to avoid making any friends?
"Really?! S-So how about, as a thank you for helping me… I treat you to some dinner?" she asked, her arms crossed behind her back. "I'll show you around town, I can even point out the popular areas where all the cool guys hang out."
Ron wanted to turn her down. But Kim would most definitely appreciate him trying to make friends, or at least have fun while he was here, and that knowledge made it so difficult to say no. All Mandy wanted to do was thank him for before… Plus it would save him a lot of time, walking around with a local who actually knew where she was going.
A warm smile blossomed upon his face. "Well… if you insist-"
"I do!" The girl moved closer, her voice clearly emphasizing the strength of her position.
"Then I guess I'll take you up on that offer. I'm Ron, by the way!" he introduced himself, giving this a chance.
"M-Mandy! I'm Mandy… So, why don't I show you around first? Unless you still have some classes, or something?" The question, if he was free at the moment, sounded hopeful (as was the girl's expression).
"Nope, I'm done for the day! I was actually about to explore the area… your timing is perfect! You're really helping me out here Mandy, lead the way!" Ron enthused, smirking. Who knew? Maybe this would turn out to be fun.
"It'll be my pleasure, Ron!" Mandy gushed, leading the blonde boy to a few specific places.
X-=-=-=-=-=-=-X
Several hours later, three spies had arrived at the location of their new undercover mission. Their boss Jerry had made sure to fill them in on all the intel he had, giving them a few gadgets along the way.
They had just walked into a big, luxurious suit. The team waited for Ricky Mathis' manager to show up, so the team could meet their potential target.
The girls took the opportunity to really sit back and relax, while they examined what was basically an idol's abode.
Clover was the first to try to take advantage of the opportunity, hellbent on giving the newest boy she was crushing on a call. "I can't wait to tell Damian about this, he's going to be SO impressed with me!" Clover shrieked. The blonde teen jumped up on the bed, quickly grabbing a phone on the nightstand and dialing Damian's number.
"Is that all she thinks about?" Sam couldn't help but ask, only to receive a shrug from Alex. They really couldn't figure out Clover's absolute obsession with boys.
"Hello?" greeted Damian over the phone.
"Hey, Damian…? It's Clover! Just thought I call to see what's going on on your side."
"Oh, hey Clover! I don't know what's going on with you, but I'm hanging around the mall… I thought you said I could buy you a latte?" the boy questioned. He didn't sound upset, or disappointed… just confused.
"What? But, I thought you were going with Mandy…" The blonde girl tried to refrain from hissing the name of her rival.
"I was, yeah… But she never showed up, didn't even call. So… I was thinking that maybe we could get together?"
'Mandy didn't show up?' That was odd, her school rival was nothing but a constant thorn in her side. Whether it involved schoolwork or (more importantly) boys, the ravenette was ALWAYS one step ahead of her. Clover smiled at the opportunity that had presented itself… before she quickly recalled she was still currently on a mission. "I'm a bit busy at the moment… maybe we can meet later?"
As soon as she finished her conversation the blonde girl laid down on the bed, a big smile on her face.
"I'm guessing it was a good call?" Alex asked, sitting down next to her friend.
"Um… yeah, it was! Mandy bailed on Damien and now I have my chance, as soon as we get back!" Clover was over the moon at the news, it had seriously perked her up.
"Really, did something happen to her?" Sam asked, also finding it odd.
"Psh… who cares? She must have, like… forgotten, or something…" The blonde didn't want her mood ruined by worrying about the ravenette girl.
At that moment the door to the suit opened and a short, chubby man walked into the room. "Ah, you must be the spies…"
X-=-=-=-=-=-=-X
"Wow… when you said you'd give me a tour, you weren't kidding!" Ron joked. Mandy had been as good as her word, showing him ALL of what Beverly Hills had to offer. From the mall, to the different shops, to hot spots around the area.
Ron had to admit it, he'd had fun! The blonde boy was expecting to see what his new home had to offer at some point… but not on his very first day! Mandy had just been so pleasant and fun to hang around with, in spite of her interests revolving around shopping and hanging out with her friends.
It honestly reminded him of Kim- Ron quickly squashed that thought. It wouldn't be fair to ruin Mandy's mood, just because he was still feeling down about being away from his best friend.
It was night as the pair walked down a well-lit road, heading towards another place she wanted to show him.
"Well… I wouldn't be a very good guide if I didn't take my job seriously!" Mandy winked at Ron, pulling him by the arm. "Trust me, Ron! This place only opened less than an hour ago… and it's SO worth it!"
"Well, I feel like I've already seen plenty… But, sure thing, lead away!" Ron agreed.
The two arrived at a nightclub filled with people. It was packed with teens of all ages, everyone shouting the name "Ricky" at the stage.
The name was unfamiliar to Ron, but he assumed it was some new (or local) pop star. It wasn't really his thing to begin with… no matter if it was a guy, OR a girl. He knew there were PLENTY of people who didn't care HOW bad the actual music was, if the person singing it was HOT…
"So, what do you think?" Mandy asked, never leaving his side. The ravenette moved even closer to Ron, this place was packed!
"Um… it's cool!" he responded quickly.
"I take it you don't like it?" Her voice wasn't disappointed… much.
"No, it's not that… I was just never really a club, or idol, kind of guy…" Ron noticed her fallen expression. "B-But, I think I should give it a shot! You never know, this might become my new favorite thing!" the blonde ex-sidekick quickly backpedaled, unwilling to offend the first person that had been nice to him since he'd arrived.
"I'm glad! Even if you don't change your mind in the end…" Mandy smiled at him sweetly.
"So, this guy Ricky, is he popular? I might have heard some of his stuff at some point…" Ron asked, looking around.
"More like a rising star, he basically showed up out of nowhere and started gaining popularity very rapidly… I wanted to hear him for myself, in person, before forming my opinion…" Mandy explained with a small smile. "I hope you don't mind me dragging you along for this…"
"Please Mandy, listening to good music and hanging out is hardly something to be sorry about…" He glanced around once more, looking for an empty place to sit. "So… is the show about to start soon? How does this work?"
"He will. But the club will give the stage to a different band, or singer, first- to raise the anticipation of the crowd. Plus, it gives someone new a chance to break out and be heard by the fans who came to see the headliner!" she explained.
As soon as Mandy finished answering Ron, the crowd started going wild. The lights started changing colors and smoke began to fill the room, the curtains parted to reveal the opener tonight.
Ron stared at the three girls calling themselves "spies". It was an odd name, but who was he to complain?
'The blonde one…' The young man couldn't help but instantly recognize the very same "yellow missile" that had bowled him over, that very same morning. Her identity was obvious to Ron… even with all the different, overly colorful clothing she was now wearing. To her left were a redhead and a ravenette he instantly identified as her friends from school. 'So, they're in a band?' All of Ron's hope to enjoy the music instantaneously evaporated.
Even worse, the so-called melody playing in the background was definitely not being produced by the girls. They were clearly talking about something else, Ron managed to read the redhead's lips. She'd mentioned something along the lines of, 'none of us are singing, and your guitar's not even plugged into the amplifier'.
Ron wanted to facepalm so hard. 'Again… I knew that girl was trouble…'
…
After the trio's 'show' ended, it was obvious that all of the people around him had enjoyed it. This left Ron the odd man out… it was back to square one with this whole idol thing. How could anyone enjoy this, when it was all fake?
He didn't say a word about his little discovery, Mandy seemed to have liked the performance quite a bit. The main event started as a buff teen ran onto the stage, accompanied by a wave of wild applause. 'So, this is Ricky. I hope this won't be anywhere near as bad as the first act…'
…
'What? What happened?' The blonde sidekick suddenly found himself in a daze, he'd apparently blacked out for some reason. The show was still going on, everyone around him seemed to be enchanted by it.
Ron's mind was screaming at him that something was wrong, he noticed that even Mandy seemed to be in a trance (like the rest of the crowd). The blonde boy tried nudging her a few times, even hollering in her ear… There was no response, she was too focused on the show.
'This isn't normal!' It was all too apparent that something weird was going on. 'Some sort of mind control, or manipulation?' the blonde concluded, he calmed himself down. Ron wasn't being controlled at the moment, whether that was because of his mental fortitude or his Mystical Monkey Power wasn't really important. Ron was sure that if he made a scene right now, it would only make things worse.
So he simply waited for the show to be over, keeping his face calm and making sure to keep Mandy safe and next to him.
…
After the show was over the crowd nearly went berserk, demanding another performance. There was none forthcoming, but Ricky DID promise his fans that he'd have a grand show for them soon. The idol bid them goodbye, walking off the stage.
The music stopped, the crowd was left dazed for a few seconds before they all vacated the club. Ron led Mandy away from everyone else, before making sure she was okay.
"That was amazing! I'm so glad I could hear him in person!" the ravenette girl enthused in a dreamy voice. She staggered a bit as she walked, as if she was drunk.
"Y-Yeah, it was definitely something…" Ron replied, quickly making up his mind. "Can I take you home?" he asked, a bit of urgency in his tone.
"But what about Ricky?" Mandy asked, almost desperately.
"I'll make sure you make it to the next performance, but only if you go home and rest… okay?" the blonde teen bargained, clearly worried.
She finally agreed and he escorted her home, Ron returned not half an hour later with only one goal in mind.
…
Following this so-called idol Ricky could have been a bit of an issue, with all the security he had with him. But it was a piece of cake to simply take out one of the guards, steal his uniform, then blend in with the rest of them.
They were careful and organized, something both he and Kim had only dealt with on rare occasions. Most of the goons they encountered were just people with clubs, relying on their size and strength to get the job done. But, these guys? They were pros…
Ron had considered calling Wade, but decided against it. At the very least, he should find out what was going on beforehand.
The drive had taken several hours, at which point they moved onto a large boat to continue their journey to a remote island.
'WOW… evil lair much?' Ron mused to himself, firmly remaining in character for the rest of the guards around him.
He was tasked with acting as a lookout with a dozen or so other guards, watching a private jet land a few dozen feet away from him. The first thing that caught his eye was the three very familiar girls he'd met briefly this morning.
'Are they a part of this whole thing?' It was definitely possible, the blonde one gave off some serious "villain" vibes.
After doing his 'job' for a little longer, to help himself blend in with the guards, Ron slipped away from the rest of the group. He took the chance to scope the place out, Ron mused that he REALLY ought to give Yori a call and thank her for all the ninja training he'd gotten at Yamanouchi. Too bad he didn't have her number… and that she'd probably never even owned a cellphone.
Ron slipped into the facility and took to the air vents, searching for who was responsible for this whole plot. It took some time (and a few close calls), before he arrived at what seemed to be a recording studio of some kind.
Inside it were those same three girls, along with some guy Ron didn't know. As soon as he got there, he could hear Ricky's barely passable playing. By now it was painfully obvious that he didn't have any real talent… and he was probably deaf, if he could hear himself and NOT cringe at how terrible he was.
"That's great work, Ricky!" shouted the man, who was most likely his manager or something.
"Yeah, it was totally excellent!" exclaimed the blonde girl, she nearly managed to wrestle the microphone away from Ricky's manager.
'She seemed… different, almost TOO giddy…' Ron's train of thought derailed as the manager entered the recording room with a few pieces of paper, leaving the girls alone.
The blonde boy watched as the redhead moved closer, pulling a few strands of hair away from her ear. Ron noticed a small earpiece hidden underneath. Her gaze focused on the clear glass, before she suddenly looked shocked about something.
'Is she listening in? But why would she, if she's involved-' Ron's thoughts cut off, now understanding that the three girls were NOT a part of this particular plot. However… whether they were friend, or foe, was still up in the air.
