Chapter 7: On The Run

Running was considered many things. For some, it was a boring and annoying activity required in order to stay in shape. For others, it was a fun release and a way to start their day in a way that made them feel in control…

For Ron Stoppable… it was a way of life. There had never been a situation in the past that COULDN'T be addressed by running away- or, at least being light on his feet.

It might sound odd, but he honestly didn't always run because he was afraid… Most of the time it was because he needed time to process the situation around him, to come up with the right solution.

Kim was having a hard time against a villain? Make the goons chase after him, or sabotage something to make them quit.

A freak, mutant monster had everyone trapped? Run until you come up with a plan to deal with it, or lull it into a false sense of superiority.

So, in short, running away was a strategy he often used- even now, when his skills were nearly on par with Kim herself… Some things just never changed.

The blonde ex-sidekick was going through his morning routine at the park… Since it was really early in the morning, the area was completely silent and devoid of any people. That was just the way Ron liked it… it helped put things in perspective.

The air was pleasantly cool, helping his hot skin stay comfortable.

As soon as he'd returned home from his latest unofficial mission in Bora Bora, the blonde boy had discovered that- apparently- he'd picked up a cold. Who would have guessed that swimming in deep water for over an hour- while not using a diving suit, or try to warm up afterwards- was bad for you? As soon as Ron realized he was sick he'd informed Mandy, who had instantly insisted on coming over to make sure the blonde was okay.

'She's such a great friend.' Ron already knew it was true, despite how briefly he'd known her. He really hoped that, at some point, he could introduce Mandy to Kim. They would definitely be able to get along- they had so much in common!

Ron had sworn to Mandy that he hadn't forgotten what he'd promised her. The sweet girl had just insisted that if he REALLY wanted to do something for her, he should get better! Truly, she was one of a kind!

Ron was feeling better after some rest, but still needed to get rid of all the extra energy he'd accumulated during his convalescence. So, Ron had fallen back on running… He already been at it for over an hour, and was still going strong.

Ron spotted someone else who was running as well, heading in the same direction he was.

…a girl who recognized him almost immediately.

"Oh, hey! Ron, right?" the ravenette spy greeted. Upon approaching the blonde, she stopped and began stretching.

"Yeah… Alex, wasn't it? We met a few days ago…" Ron replied. He too started to stretch his limbs, wanting to avoid a cramp.

"Yeah, at the mall! I never thought there would be anyone going for a run at this hour- well… except me, of course" she teased, smirking at him.

"Yeah, I used to go on them where I lived before…" the blonde teen explained, avoiding staring at her body- or, more precisely, at how tight her gym shorts and tank top were on her.

The teen spy moved closer to him. "Say… are you done with your workout?" she asked.

"Um… no, not yet…" Ron replied, backing up a little. Did this girl have a need to be in close proximity to whoever she spoke to?

"Then… could I join you? It's WAY better to work out with someone else… Not to mention that it can be a little scary for a girl to run all alone in the park…" Alex added, her tone innocent.

"Oh! Sure, I guess…" Ron obviously didn't point out how it would be FAR more dangerous for the poor sap planning to attack an international spy- who had the gadgets, AND the training, to bring pretty much anyone down.

The pair started running in the same direction, choosing a light jog that sped up as time went on.

"Say, Ron…" Alex suddenly said, Ron's head turning towards her. "I saw you running at the meet, not that long ago… You seemed pretty good at it, too! Have you participated in any competitions, in the past?"

"Me? No… I was never really on a team, so-" the blonde ex-sidekick admitted.

"What?! Why not? You make it looks so easy!" The ravenette teen was shocked to learn that someone who had potential like Ron had never gotten around to taking things to the next level.

"I was busy with more important things…" Ron responded cryptically.

"Important things? Like what?"

'Saving the world with Kim Possible…' he didn't say, Ron simply smiled. "Schoolwork… I had terrible grades- my attendance record wasn't all that great either, so yeah…"

"I'm the SAME way!" she exclaimed, flashing Ron an embarrassed smile. "T-the grades part, that is… Jerry's been nagging me about it for the longest time…", she sighed.

"Jerry?" the blonde boy prompted, careful to make it seem as though he didn't know the older man.

"Oh! …you could say he's my guardian and private teacher! A real stickler for the rules, that one!" Alex declared, smiling sheepishly.

"Yeah! I know the type, trust me…" Ron swore, instantly recalling his former assistant principal.

"Are you still struggling with schoolwork?" she inquired.

"Um… a bit? It really depends on the subject…" he answered.

"Well, then maybe you want to join me? I have a bunch of stuff I need to go over anyway, so-"

Ron wasn't really listening that closely, only paying half-attention as he stared at the ravenette. This could definitely be a double-edged sword. On the one hand, it could be a great way of getting closer to the girls and keeping an eye on them. On the other… it could also make it easier for the spies to recognize him.

"So, what do you say?" Alex finally finished.

"Mmm… If you really don't mind me tagging along, then sure!" Ron exclaimed. He'd deal with the consequences as they came… and reserve some distance between him and the three agents.

X-=-=-=-=-=-=-X

After Ron had finished his workout (and agreed to meet up with Alex for their study session later today), the two had said their goodbyes and headed home to get ready for today's classes.

From there, the day went as peacefully as it could have. Ron spotted the three spies walking around- with Clover dressed as a COWGIRL, of all things. Apparently, she was trying to get a date with this guy from Texas. He was wearing a cowboy hat… and had the thickest accent Ron had ever heard. 'Could you BE any faker?' If the guy ever yelled 'yee ha!', Ron was sure he'd lose it.

The costume seemed to work well for Clover, as she smiled and waved at the boy. At the same time, he noticed that Alex was looking his way. She waved at him, a pleasant smile on her face.

Ron had grinned and returned the gesture, before he left to his next class (and meeting with Mandy).

"You and Mandy's new friend? That's a new one…" Clover commented, upon noticing her friend's sudden interest in the blonde boy.

"What do you mean?" Alex asked innocently, tilting her head to the side.

"I think she meant that we didn't expect you to be interested in someone like that…" Sam elaborated.

"Someone like… that? But, you guys saw how nice he is… Plus, I met him today on my run! He's really cool!" the ravenette declared, recalling her talk with the blonde boy.

"If you say so… he's not nearly handsome enough for MY tastes!" Clover exclaimed in a haughty tone.

Alex was prepared to point out that her friend's taste in men was pretty shallow- but was denied the opportunity, when a few lockers next to them suddenly opened and sucked them inside.

X-=-=-=-=-=-=-X

Now finished with his classes, Ron headed to the library for his study session with Alex. He didn't exactly feel comfortable inviting her over to his house… and didn't want to go to her own for the same reasons.

No need to get TOO close to the spies…

His phone suddenly vibrated, having received a short text.

'Sorry to spring this out of the blue right after we made plans, but I had an issue and can't really make it today… rain check?' the message from Alex read.

Initially, Ron had been surprised when the ravenette teen had offered to exchange cell numbers. He had taken it in stride, she WAS the friendliest member of her team. Besides, it seemed like something she would do. Right now, Ron couldn't help but feel a bit worried. 'She did claim that she'd be free earlier… now, all of a sudden, she has an issue? Is it a new mission?' the blonde teen wondered, slipping out of sight.

He had to check something… and now, with Alex's number, it was SO much easier.

The blonde ex-sidekick arrived at the abandoned warehouse the signal had been coming from. Ron had managed to pick up a few basic tricks from Wade in the past, only now getting around to trying them out.

He was dressed in his usual getup, with his face and hair hidden. Ron approached the warehouse- instantly spotting a huge, purple helicopter that was parked there. It had most likely smashed right through the roof, if all the broken glass and shingles he noticed scattered around it were any indication. Plus, now that he thought about it, there was a HUGE hole in the ceiling.

Finally, he spotted the three girls still dressed in the same outfits he'd seen them in this morning. They were discussing something he couldn't really make out, not from the distance he was standing.

"Well, no point in waiting…" he mumbled to himself, walking closer. "Fancy meeting you here…" he greeted, now standing in front of the spies.

"Great… now you too? Can this day get any WORSE?" Sam declared, immediately upon spotting the boy. Her voice sounded odd, lacking the heat it usually had while addressing him.

"Nice to see you too, Zucchini… I'm guessing that something happened?" Ron prompted, moving closer to Clover and Alex (who were sitting on concrete).

"You could say that… Apparently, now we're criminals who're on the run! Do you know what that could do to MY HAIR?!" the blonde spy shouted.

"What?" Ron tilted his head to the side. "You girls… are on the run? From WHO?"

"From WOOHP! Jerry is after us, over something we- apparently- did…" Sam explained, moving closer to her friends.

Ron simply took a seat, staring intently at the three girls. "Tell me what happened from the start… everything…" he demanded, his voice completely serious.

Ron sat, listening to Sam as she'd gone over everything she knew. Apparently, there had been a bank robbery… that the GIRLS had committed. From what Jerry had told them, there were multiple witnesses- and several recordings- demonstrating that it really had been them. Even worse, "they" had used WOOHP technology during the crime that was currently missing.

In conclusion their boss had been planning on reprogramming them, by implanting behavior-modification chips inside their brains. This would effectively brainwash the spies for good, so they would forever be unable to do any further harm.

Ron could feel the blood rush to his head, his fists clenching. The blonde boy ground his teeth in anger, shaking in his seat. 'That old, fossilized piece of sh-' Ron bit back on his silent tirade, returning his focus to the three girls currently staring at him in worry.

Taking a deep breath, Ron calmed himself down. "Sorry about that. So… it's OBVIOUSLY not you, any idea who could it be? Someone you've put away in the past?" he asked.

"Y-You believe us?" Sam was taken aback; how could he (of all people) declare that, like it was the most obvious thing in the world?

"Well… yeah, why wouldn't I? I think I've gotten to know you all a bit by now… and I'm one hundred and ten percent POSITIVE that it WASN'T you girls…" Ron insisted, appearing to be contemplating something.

"Aww… you believe in us!" Alex gushed, looking positively over the moon about it.

"I've experienced something like this myself, in the past… Someone who is supposed to be on your side, suddenly turning traitor…" Ron recalled his time at Yamanouchi, when a student named Fukushima had defected to the side of his nemesis- Monkey Fist.

"You have? Wow… so, do you have- like- a lot of experience, or something?" Clover asked, clearly interested in their helper's backstory.

"…or something. In any case, where do we start? Do you have any leads?" Ron asked, shying away from the topic of his past.

"Only that they looked like us-" Sam moaned, suddenly realizing something. "Maybe if we can get into the WOOHP database, we'd be able to find something that was overlooked!"

After a bit of searching, Alex pulled out a small gadget she called a Compowder. It turned out to be capable of, among other things, accessing computer systems. They used it to view the WOOHP video archive, scanning the footage of three girls robbing a bank.

"Yep, that's DEFINITELY you three…" Ron commented.

"I KNEW that you'd turn against us when you saw this- just like Jerry did. I don't know what I was expecting…" Sam muttered angrily.

"I KNOW that's not you in the video, what I MEAN is that it looks too much like you… like a flawless copy" Ron elaborated.

"Hey, look! Check out the Clover impostor…" Sam noted, the group all spotting what she meant.

The 'Clover' onscreen had scratched her uniform on a cactus in the background, just before running away.

"Well, that's as good a place as any to start looking…" Ron suggested.

"Yeah… it's too bad we don't have any way to enter that bank without raising suspicion…" Sam remarked.

Ron simply cleared his throat. "Yeah… if only there was someone who wasn't a part of the robbery, they could just walk in at any time…" he teased, staring at the spies.

The girls had the decency to look embarrassed, faces turning red.

Ron simply huffed. "I wonder if you would've had to dress up or something, if I wasn't here…" Ron laughed at the thought, before noting that the trio had fallen unusually quiet. "What? Wait… REALLY?! Oh man, I should have TOTALLY let you do that… that would have been a sight to remember!"

The team of four made their way to the bank, inside the very same helicopter the girls had used to make their escape. It would only be matter of time before WOOHP managed to locate them, so they decided to stay on the move as much as possible.

The flight this time was much comfier, Ron now standing- as opposed to the last time, when he'd doubled as Alex's chair. The boy banished the memory of how she'd felt, nestled against him… Now wasn't the time- or EVER, if he had his way…

The ebony-haired spy sat with her entire body facing him, gazing at Ron with an odd look on her face. Her chin was pressed into her palm, a tiny smile upon her face.

"You sure you don't want to sit? It's really comfortable…" Alex invited with a wink.

"Positive…" Ron muttered, glancing away. "Are we close to the bank?" he asked the redhead.

"Almost there… get ready to drop…" Sam advised, Ron nodded and stepped over to the door.

Ron exited the helicopter, moving to acquire the clue they'd come for from the bank, leaving the three girls to wait for him.

"Wow! I know you girls call ME boy-crazy…", she glanced at Alex, "but YOU are something else…"

"What? I didn't do anything like you did…" the ravenette defended.

"Well yeah, obviously… I'M the only one with style like THIS!" the blonde spy declared. "But, you sure as heck don't hold back. I mean… what would you have done, if both me and Sammy hadn't been around? Oh, and not on the run from WOOHP?"

"I'd probably just ask him out…" Alex replied.

"Wow… that simple, huh?" Clover muttered to herself, unsure what she'd expected.

"Alex, I can't believe I have to say this… AGAIN… but you can't date a criminal!" the redhead chastised, landing at a spot that was close to the bank (but still out of sight).

"But, is he really? I mean… from everything we've seen, he's just been helping us out. After The Actor left, Jerry didn't even find anything classified missing… and the only thing the guy DID take, he returned after Jerry asked him to!" Alex exclaimed.

"That we KNOW of… Heck, he could be an evil mastermind working from the shadows to gain our trust- only to betray us when we least expect it!" Sam monologued, too absorbed in her latest tirade to even notice Ron standing right behind her.

"Interesting theory about me, Zucchini… and here I thought you didn't care…" Ron replied in a dry voice.

"Did you get it?" the blonde girl asked, moving over and staring at the small piece of strange fabric he clutched in his hand.

Ron handed it over, glancing at Sam. "It'd be best if we moved on… the chances of us being found by your boss are too high, if we stay around here…"

The redheaded pilot simply nodded and strode towards their ride, feeling somewhat bad about him overhearing her. She was certain The Actor was hiding something… but was he really a bad guy?

The group returned to the abandoned warehouse, scanning the small piece of evidence they'd found.

"This fabric feels almost like… flesh…" Sam commented, examining their clue.

"This fabric has traces of human DNA! That's why it feels like flesh!" Clover explained, continuing to inspect it.

"Why would someone wear a shirt made out of FLESH? I can't imagine it would breathe very well in warm weather…" Alex commented.

Upon further analysis they uncovered the lab that had created this strange, fleshy fabric and moved to investigate.

Using the helicopter the group approached the area where the lab was supposed to be, now only minutes away.

Ron was standing in the back, busy pondering what was going on. Was it clones, or something else?

He could overhear Sam saying something about activating "stealth mode" -before the entire helicopter started spinning like a top. The girls screamed in surprise, their straps the only thing holding them in their seats.

Ron wasn't so lucky, he was spun around forcibly for a few seconds- until Sam managed to find the button that would stop their evasive maneuver and ACTUALLY activate stealth mode.

"Oopsie…" Sam squeaked innocently.

"I think I'm going to be sick…" Ron muttered … now laying with his head between Alex's legs, having been tossed there.

"Ohh… you poor thing" Alex cooed- without missing a beat- petting the boy's head in a gentle, caring matter.

"W-Why does a helicopter even HAVE a function like that? What kind of madman thought that would be a good idea?" Ron forced out.

"There, there…" the ravenette soothed, continuing to stroke his head lovingly. Alex looked like she was thoroughly enjoying this opportunity.

"You'd have to bring that up with Jerry, I'm afraid…" Sam replied, her tone apologetic at seeing Ron's suffering.

"…and THIS is why it's important to always wear a seat belt" Clover commented. Ron glanced at her, his gaze hot.

"NOT… HELPING…" he hissed, Alex calming him down once more.

The group arrived at the lab. It was part of an island, complete with small towers and even built into a cliff-face.

"Now THAT'S impressive!" Alex remarked. Ron finally realized the position he was in, jumping up from her lap and clearing his throat.

Ron stared at the structure… doing his very best to ignore Alex's cute, disappointed pout.

"Wait, guys… check it out" Clover suddenly interjected. The quartet stared at a small screen on their ride's console, there was some sort of force-field that was nearly invisible.

"Yeah… not suspicious at all…" Ron commented. "This is supposed to be a well-known lab?"

"To WOOHP, it is…" Sam answered. "Look… whatever that force field is, it's not affecting those birds…"

"Huh, it probably only reacts to metal… how are we going to be able to get inside and check it out?" Alex remarked, both of her teammates shooting her a mischievous smile.

"Why do "I" always get these kinds of jobs?" the ravenette spy couldn't help but mutter, as she was lowered down with a rope.

Ron couldn't help but stare in worry. "Is this really safe?"

"It's the only option we have… unless you want to volunteer to go instead of her?" Clover offered with a smile. "I didn't think so… Besides, she deserves it…"

Ron would have asked what the blonde spy meant… but settled for simply watching the ravenette from the helicopter, as she descended.

A few seconds later there was a live feed from Alex, she was inside the facility and examining a few dozen tubes that seemed to be growing humans. All still small… but definitely humans.

Suddenly, a loud scream came boiling out of the feed- everyone jumped, startled.

"What's wrong with Alex?" Sam demanded, shortly before the entire helicopter shook.

Several smaller helicopters, with mounted machine guns, started shooting at them- breaking their camouflage.

"We've got company!" Clover declared.

"No, you think?!" Ron replied angrily, pulling Alex back up as quickly as he could.

One small helicopter had noticed the dangling spy and instantly rushed forwards- cutting her lifeline with its blades, causing her to drop like a stone.

"Shit!" Ron shouted, jumping out of his ride to help the ravenette. The wind howled in his ears, as he moved closer and closer to the girl. Within a few seconds Ron managed to catch her, wrapping himself around the spy and shielding her from their impending impact. "Hold on!" he bellowed, readying himself.

The next thing he knew they were back inside the helicopter- it had morphed into a jet and picked them up while they'd been falling through the air. Ron was now sitting in Alex's seat, the girl in question still in his arms. A belt darted in from the side, strapping them both in.

"Need a lift?" teased a smiling Sam.

"I think we've already got that part covered" Ron joked. "Nice flying… Sam."

"D-Don't get used to it…" she stuttered, pulling off some (quite frankly, insane) maneuvers to get away from the remaining helicopters.

Alex remained completely silent. She had just free-fell several hundred feet, screaming her lungs out. She had fully expected her two teammates to bail her out, like they always did for each other.

What she HADN'T expected was for their mystery friend to come running the second she was in trouble, jumping out of a flying vehicle after her. From the look on Ron's face when he'd caught her, he had obviously been committed to shielding Alex from the impact.

What was he thinking?! Was he insane?! Did he have a death wish?!

…and why in the HELL was her heart beating so strongly?! She felt so small, so weak, in his arms. …but, strangely enough, also completely safe.

Alex barely had the courage to shift, let alone look at him… She really needed to calm down.

Sam managed to find a fragment of a fingernail on Alex's shirt. After scanning it, they found out that it belonged to… Clover, of all people.

The blonde girl had been quick to insist that she wouldn't be caught DEAD wearing that color nail-polish.

The group had returned to the warehouse to discuss what they had learned so far.

"So… what is the connection between that lab, the DNA, and the robbery?" Sam asked, hoping something would click into place for one of them.

No such luck, none of the girls had an inkling as to the right answer.

"I don't know… but I hope we figure it out soon! I'd rather not spend another MINUTE inside this disgusting warehouse!" Clover shouted, the smell of the place having hit her the hardest.

Ron suddenly got up in a hurry, he'd heard something. "We have to leave… NOW!"

Before any of the girls could say a word, their questions were answered. A loud sound echoed through the area, the warehouse falling down around them. Several helicopters flew through the sky above them, accompanied by a few tanks on the ground. Armed agents came rushing forward, starting to spread out.

WOOHP had FOUND them…

And that's done!

Don't forget to tell me what you think!
