Chapter 9: New Teammate
'I can't believe I agreed to that…' the blonde Stoppable groused, his thoughts scattered since yesterday and his talk with Jerry. 'That old goat got me…'
Ron was currently sitting in class- sadly, this one didn't include Mandy. The ravenette girl was currently brushing up on her acting skills. There was a school play coming up and she was hoping to land the lead role.
He didn't have the heart to tell her that- according to Sam and her friends- the part had already been taken by Sam. Their drama teacher had simply declared that she was a perfect match for the character.
The blonde ex-sidekick didn't really care about the play overall, but he had been hoping that his friend Mandy would be able to snag the part she wanted. Or, at the very least, a role with some meaning that she could be proud of.
Glancing around his seat, he noticed Clover glaring at Sam with hateful eyes. Ron could already guess that it was about the play… or a boy, those were equally logical conclusions when it came to the blonde spy.
Ron also noticed Alex was staring at him, a tiny smile on her face- but only when he wasn't looking. The girl immediately glanced away whenever she realized he'd noticed her. 'Odd…' Ron mused, simply shrugging her behavior off. Ron tried to focus on his class, but found doing so quite difficult while Sam and Clover argued about the lead role.
Apparently, their drama teacher had the same thoughts as Ron- he made a beeline for the two friends.
"Since you girls are in such a talkative mood, perhaps one of you would like to tell the class what you think the most dramatic scene in 'Les Misérables' is?"
Ron simply smiled briefly at the girls being put on the spot, perhaps some embarrassment would put things in perspective for them.
"Well… I for one think it's the scene where Jean Valjean escapes through the Paris sewers!" a short boy declared, the second he entered the classroom. "Greetings, my academic colleges!" he continued. The boy was on the short side, wearing a faded yellowish suit (complete with a bowtie). He had blonde hair and big, round glasses. Next to him stood two big men in suits, ambivalent to what was going on.
All in all, Ron was relieved that this boy was here- of all places. In any NORMAL school, this kid would be prime bullying material. Hell… Ron had a feeling that if this guy ever met Bonnie, she would more than likely make him run away crying.
"Ah! You must be Percival, the ambassador's son!" their teacher concluded.
'Well, that explains the extra security…' Ron thought, the situation becoming much clearer.
Percival sat down in an open seat, his two bodyguards standing on either side of him. "Indubitably! Oh, by the way- sir- I've always felt that it would be best to discuss Les Misérables-"
Ron tuned out the rest of the conversation. It seemed like this… Percival was one of those individuals who liked to show people how smart he was… But he didn't do so the same way Wade, or Felix, did. No… this was all completely over the top, the only purpose to demonstrate just how superior he was to the rest of the class.
'Eh… not my problem…' Ron didn't mind all that much, many people certainly knew they were the best in their subject. The real issue, however, were the people around them…
"Mmm… interesting theory Percival, you should do just fine on tomorrow's quiz…" their teacher casually remarked. He was smiling widely, quite pleased to have a student with such extensive knowledge.
"Quiz?! What quiz?!" Alex shouted, quickly jumping up out of her seat. The rest of the class didn't scramble to their feet, but they also seemed just as confused as she was.
"A quiz on the first ten chapters of Les Mis… that is, for anyone who does not have a role in the play…" the teacher explained.
Some of the students looked relieved for being exempt, while the rest simply looked bummed- or straight-up panicked.
'WOW… way to divide the class and make them hate the new kid…' Some people just didn't have acting talent, or simply didn't look the part. Then there were those who just didn't want to be in the spotlight… To punish them all like that? Or, even worse, using this Percival kid as an excuse for a quiz? Whatever the real reason was, it was pretty mean overall.
Ron's glanced at the girls, noting the even angrier stare Clover was shooting at Sam. The redheaded spy simply smirked, not even looking at her friend.
'My God… I can feel the smugness radiating off that look!' Sam seemed so much like Kim at the moment, whenever she'd argued with- and won against- Bonnie.
X-=-=-=-=-=-=-X
Class had just ended. Alex stared worriedly at her two friends, both Sam and Clover standing with their backs turned to one another. They simply refused to look at each other.
"So… you girls want to go to the mall tonight?" the ravenette baited, hoping that the prospect of shopping would be able to calm them down.
"I would… but now I have a quiz to study for! You know, because SOMEONE stole my part in the play…" Clover responded, her tone angry and accusing.
"How about you, Sam?" the ravenette spy asked weakly, already knowing this wouldn't end well.
"I have to go over my lines…" Sam replied. "You know what they say… practice makes perfect!" the redhead crowed, her proud smirk back on display.
"Well, I guess I'll go alone- or… I could ask Ron if he wanted to go!" Alex suddenly shouted, a flash of inspiration hitting her.
"Wait, what?" Clover and Sam stopped glaring at one another, focusing on their friend.
"Alex, go back a sec… you're planning on inviting Mandy's friend to go to the mall with you?" Clover asked in wonder and shock.
"MANDY'S friend? You know he's my friend too, right? I ran with him in the morning, even set up a study session with him…" the ravenette spy shot back.
"You're having problems in class, why didn't you tell me? I could help you study…" Sam offered.
"Well yeah, but I didn't think you were going to ask him out…" Clover replied, at almost the same time.
"Of course that's what you focused on…" Alex couldn't help but sigh at her friend's priorities. "I don't really see what the big deal is, just two friends going out-"
Suddenly the floor underneath them opened downwards and they all fell with a loud scream, a trap door closing behind them. The girls slid down a wide pipe for a few seconds, before it discharged above a stream of sewage. Luckily for them, a blue speedboat came rushing over and scooped them up before they hit the water.
"Nice timing, Jerry!" Sam shouted sarcastically, having spotted their boss driving the boat. She tactfully refrained from pointing out that, if he hadn't caught them in time, he would have had to run and hide- because the spies would have honestly tried to KILL HIM.
"Yeah, we were in the middle of an important fight!" Clover added, unwilling to let their previous argument go.
"Sorry girls, but it's an international emergency…" the older man swore. "You see, the annual Nobel Prize winners conference is going on today… the world's top scholars will be there…"
"International emergency? More like an international snooze fest…" the blonde spy spat, still feeling annoyed over her school's play.
"Yeah… where can we NOT get tickets?" Alex agreed. Her upcoming quiz was one thing… but having to go to a place like that was going to be SO BORING!
Jerry cleared his throat. "As you can see on this hotel surveillance video… several laureates have already been kidnapped…" Their boss played a short clip showing scholars suddenly vanishing right in front of the camera. "They MUST be found" Jerry declared, noting the girls' disappointed expressions. "Oh! Did I mention the conference is in Paris?"
That appeared to elicit the desired reaction, all three girls swooning immediately upon hearing that their destination would be the City of Love.
"Also, one more thing… there will be a new 'recruit' joining you on this mission…" Jerry smiled, pushing a few buttons on the boat's dash.
"Huh, a new recruit?" the girls parroted in sync. At that very moment, someone shot out of a pipe into the boat. Unlike the girls, he didn't land on his rear.
Standing before the spies was a dark-haired man, wearing a casual black suit and pair of thick glasses.
"That was some ride… you do know that if my suit's damaged, you'll have to repair it…" the ravenette boy quipped.
"May I remind you that it's MY suit in the first place?" Jerry pointed out, staring at the teen and rolling his eyes.
"Um… Jerry, who is that?" Sam asked. The voice was familiar, sure… but there was just NO WAY it could be true.
"What, have you already forgotten about me? I'm hurt, Zucchini…" the young man teased, the spies all gasped.
'No… there's just no way…' Sam thought to herself, gaping like a fish out of water.
'YES!' Alex shrieked silently, there was no stopping the glee on Alex's face.
"Well… this is a surprise…" Clover remarked, the only one of her friends to remain serious (or actually speak). "I thought you wanted to catch and question him… what changed?"
"Let's just say that he came forward with good intentions and I have decided to test him on that account… Now, as I was saying-" Jerry tried to continue, before he was cut off.
"What do you mean 'came forward'?! Did he just turn himself in?!" the redheaded spy shrieked, pointing at Ron.
"You know, I'm right here…" Ron muttered incredulously, he noticed Alex now standing next to him.
"I know…" she cooed, smiling at the boy. Her eyes widened, Alex snapped her gaze towards their boss. "Wait! Does this mean that you can tell us who you are?!" the ravenette girl asked excitedly.
Both Sam and Clover also turned to face their boss, hoping to discover the answer to that mystery themselves.
"Sorry… but no…" Ron replied, his tone apologetic.
"Mmm… are you some kind of celebrity, or something?" Clover asked, flicking her hair back, clearly interested.
"Well, at least we know your hair color… It's a start!" Alex crowed, studying his face.
"Yep… you've got me all figured out…" Ron responded cryptically. In reality, he was using a gadget Jerry had given him to change his hair color and facial features.
Alex's eyes narrowed as she inspected him, her smile returning shortly after.
"If we can get back to the mission…?" Jerry prodded, the teens looking at him guiltily. Suddenly the rear of the boat closed over them, the craft transforming into a small plane. They shot off through one of the open pipes and into the sky.
As Jerry briefed them concerning their gadgets for this mission, Ron couldn't help but contemplate the one glaring issue he had with the many different devices. Every single one either had a heart on them, or were WAY too brightly colored.
"Anything 'I' can use? …and preferably something NOT pink?" the ex-sidekick groaned.
The girls started giggling, not even trying to hide it.
Jerry simply shrugged. "Sorry… not this time, I'm afraid. But I'm sure you can hold on for one or two missions, right?" the older man challenged, smirking at Ron.
In the end, the blonde boy accepted the exploding lipstick, sticking it in his pocket. It could work for him… provided no one saw Ron carrying the damn thing.
"And one more thing… tomorrow you will be having a surprise quiz in biology" Jerry informed them.
"Wait, two quizzes on the same day?!" Alex shouted in shock. "That's TOTALLY unfair!"
"Unfair for SOME of us…" Clover hissed, her eyes narrowing.
"Could you at least tell us what the quiz is on, Jerry?" Sam asked, smirking at her blonde friend.
Their boss simply huffed. "I'm sorry, but it would be completely unethical for me to tell you-" the old man lectured, letting the topic of the quiz slip out by 'accident'.
'Yeah… a real stickler for the rules, this one.' Ron couldn't help but shrug at the sight.
"Well, look at the time… I've really got to run!" Jerry donned a parachute and goggles, before pushing a button and jumping off the plane.
"Couldn't he just come with us to Paris? Or, at least land first?" Ron couldn't help but question.
"You'll get used to it…" Clover assured the boy.
"So…" Alex began, sitting down next to Ron the second she got the chance. "Now that we're officially together-" she stated, cutting off upon hearing her friends' cough. "Working together, that is… What do we call you?" she recovered quickly.
That was a VERY good question, he hadn't even thought up an alias of his own to go by… and sticking with 'The Actor' was silly, in his opinion. Ron simply shrugged the topic off. "Call me whatever you want…" he responded coolly, even if the line sounded a little odd coming from him.
"Oh, I will…" Alex replied weakly, but still loudly enough to be heard by her companions.
The flight had gone smoothly, the new team of four arriving in Paris. They were already at the conference, walking around. Figuring out who was participating had proven to be quite easy, as everyone around them seemed eager to talk about their expertise.
"Okay guys, keep an eye out for anything strange… and try to blend in" Sam advised, before glancing in Ron's direction and walking away without another word.
"What… do I not fit in, or something?" the disguised blonde asked, one eyebrow raised.
"I wouldn't worry about Sam, she'll get used to it… Now, how about we split up?" Clover suggested.
"Oh, great idea!" Alex instantly agreed, ready to declare that she'd look around with Ron. Sadly, she was beaten to the punch.
"I think it'd be best if YOU join up with Sam… I'm still mad at her, after all…" the blonde girl reasoned.
"Ah… right- but keep an eye out!" Alex shouted, moving to join Sam. The redhead was already looking around, and had even been approached by a few interested parties.
"So… shall we investigate, Pretty Boy?" the blonde next to Ron asked with a smile.
"Pretty Boy?" he repeated, clearly confused by her sudden shift in demeanor.
The spy smiled innocently. "What? You DID tell us we could call you whatever we wanted to… That's on you, for giving us that kind of power…" Clover teased him, smiling. However, now that she thought about it, the blonde girl was a little worried about what the rest of her team would call him.
Ron had been walking around, with Clover at his side, for some time now. They had deliberately acted like they were chatting about something private, making themselves appear to be a couple. This made it much easier to look around, none of the other guests willing to interrupt what they perceived to be a private moment between lovers.
"Well, what do you know, Pretty Boy… you're already doing a great job" Clover quietly complemented.
"By doing what exactly, filling in as your pretend date?" Ron had figured out pretty quickly that the reason Clover had wanted him nearby was to use him as cover.
"Hey, you should be honored! Not many boys my age can say they dated me…" the blonde spy declared dramatically.
"Funny, I thought I wasn't handsome enough…" Ron teased, offering her a cheeky smile.
There was a tiny glint in the woman's eyes, before she smiled innocently. "You never know… I might give you a few points if you do well on this mission."
"Well… at least now I'll have my priorities straight-" the Stoppable teen shot back dryly, cutting off upon hearing a sudden shriek coming from nearby.
Both Ron and Clover rush to the source, noticing that Sam and Alex had the same idea, only to come to a complete stop on a blank area of carpet.
"What? Where did they go?" Sam asked.
"I saw them, they just vanished into THIN AIR!" Alex swore to her redheaded friend.
"Wait, over there!" Clover interjected, sprinting forward. She stopped a man from being sucked up into the ceiling, a blue vortex pulling him upwards.
People started running away from the room, rushing past Ron and preventing him from running to help the girls.
He could see Clover holding a man down by his leg. A few seconds later, the strain proved too much for her. The blonde girl let go, both she and her friends falling towards the floor. Ron leaped forward, stretching out his arms, hoping to catch them. Two of the girls were already on the ground, he'd only made it in time to nab one.
Clover blinked a few times owlishly, finally noticing exactly where she was. "Oh! Good job, Pretty Boy! I see you're already working hard to get those points…" the blonde girl cooed, smiling up at Ron. The boy groaned in annoyance.
"You know, I COULD just drop you…" he pointed out.
"Then go ahead…" the blonde girl in his arms challenged, smirking devilishly.
Ron grumbled to himself, gently letting her down.
"Um… a little help maybe?" Alex muttered from her spot on the floor, Ron quickly moving to help both her and Sam up.
"What a disaster!" shouted a gruff voice. It was an old scholar, ambling forward with the aid of a walking stick. "That man is the foremost expert on nineteenth-century French literature!"
…
"I'm sorry… could you please repeat that?" Ron requested politely, surely he'd misheard her.
The team of four sat outside of one of the halls, in the aftermath of their failure to stop that scholar from vanishing into thin air. They were discussing what had happened- that was, until one of them had pointed out something rather crazy.
Sam simply huffed, before she spoke once more, "just think about it… Jerry tells us we're going to be quizzed on biology, then the premier authority on the subject gets kidnapped! We're also supposed to have a quiz on Les Misérables… and the expert on nineteenth-century French literature just vanishes!" the redhead pointed out.
"But that would mean that the villain would have to be someone at school, who is trying to raise their grades!" Ron reasoned. It sounded so incredibly stupid- even to HIM! …and he'd met Junior! Was there something they were missing? Or, was Sam right on the money?
Clover jumped up from her seat, moving to stand in front of her redheaded teammate. "First of all, WE are being tested on Les Misérables… and do you really expect me to believe that these kidnappings are related to our quizzes in LA?" the blonde teen challenged.
"That's exactly what I'm saying… Miss Sore Loser!" Sam insisted with a smirk. The more time that passed, the more logical the argument seemed to her.
"Wha- easy there, girls…" Alex came to the rescue, preventing her two teammates from fighting. "How about we ask Jerry about any upcoming quizzes, then see if any of the other winners get kidnapped?!" Alex suggested with a smile.
"That's… not a bad idea!" Ron declared, smiling at the idea. "Let's call Jerry and check it out!"
Sam raised an eyebrow at him. "You can call him yourself, you DO have a Compowder of your own…"
"I REFUSE to use that thing, unless it's an emergency… in public…" the ex-sidekick shot back with a frown.
Sam smirked at Ron, reveling in her minor victory.
"I'll call him!" Alex quickly volunteered, smiling at their male teammate.
'Traitor…' Sam pouted, staring at the image of Jerry on the small screen.
"No way! Absolutely not! I am NOT allowed to reveal test subjects to you…" the older man declared.
"Normally I'd agree with you on this, Jerry…" Ron assured him, moving closer to Alex to see the screen. "However, the timing's too perfect to simply be a coincidence… This might sound sketchy, but it could also be a lead…" the disguised blonde argued.
Jerry appeared to think for a few moments, finally nodding his head. "I see your point, fine…" He started typing something on his terminal, instantly reminding Ron of his friend Wade.
"Your next quiz is in math class… on Isaac Newton!" the older man informed them, trusting that his spies' intentions were pure.
"Wow, thanks Jerry! Now I'm totally gonna ace that- I mean… rescue those scholars!" Alex quickly corrected herself. Apparently not fast enough, the older man simply sighing.
Behind the pair Clover and Sam had started fighting once again… something about Isaac Newton being a cookie maker?
Alex suddenly leaned into Ron's side, smiling innocently. "Good job convincing Jerry, I totally thought he'd just keep saying no!"
"Hey, it was a good idea! Give yourself a little credit!" the male blonde chided, before noticing the two spies fighting. "We should probably stop them…" Ron added, failing to noticing the eyes Alex was shooting him.
"I guess we should…" the ravenette agreed, already feeling cheated out of a nice little moment with their new teammate. "Girls, I found something! There's a scholar specializing in Isaac Newton at this conference!" Alex declared, after looking over the schedule.

The spies ran across their victim-to-be. They were following him around using their small chopper, ready for whatever would happen.
Ron had a different plan, wearing the same suit from earlier and closely tailing the man on foot. The ex-sidekick trailed a few steps behind him, making sure the scholar never left his sight.
"How's it going down there, anything strange?" Sam asked, the question slipping out of his earpiece. They were checking in with him, despite being able to see what Ron was doing.
"Nothing yet… it's basically a waiting game…" the boy replied.
After a few minutes, a slight humming sound made the hairs on the back of Ron's neck stand up. He spotted the same blue vortex appearing above the Nobel Laureate. The blonde quickly rushed forward, pushing the scholar to the side. "They're here!" was the last thing he managed to say, before he was sucked up inside a huge tube.
Ron's eyes adjusted to his surrounding, seeing that he was now locked inside a cylinder. It was attached to a flying machine that looked like a big vacuum cleaner, there were two men in black outfits piloting it.
"Hold on! We're coming to get you-" Sam shouted in worry.
Ron quickly cut her off, "no! Stay where you are!"
"W-What?! We can't just leave you to-" Clover took over, already mirroring her friend's concern.
"You're not…" he assured them, calming the spies down with his tone. "Just keep your distance, make sure to follow us to their lair… That way, we can rescue all the scholars that have been kidnapped!" Ron explained, sensing they were still on the fence concerning his idea. "It's okay… trust me…"
…
Sam was the first one to reply, "Fine… but wait for us to arrive."
X-=-=-=-=-=-=-X
A few hour later…
Ron was looking around at the moment, his kidnappers having already taken him to their so-called hideout. Being a man dressed in a smart suit had apparently been enough to fool the pair into thinking they'd nabbed the right guy…
Even when he and their intended victim looked NOTHING alike…
The two guys who'd kidnapped him were talking about something…
"Hey, you two! Where's the bathroom in this place?" the blonde ex-sidekick asked loudly, drawing their attention.
"Wha- you're still awake in there?" one of the men asked. He looked surprised… but also amused.
"Well, what do you expect? The movie on the flight was terrible… I was bored out of my mind!" Ron shot back, glancing at the second guard (who appeared a bit worried).
"H-Hey, look at this!" He pulled out a piece of paper from his pocket and glanced at it a few times, before pointing at Ron. "That's not the guy we were supposed to get!"
"No… you think? And here I thought you guys were supposed to be pros, or something…" Ron loudly mocked.
"Where is he?" one of them demanded, stepping closer, glaring angrily at the boy in the tube.
"Is that how you ask for something? Boy, the service here really stinks…" Ron didn't even bother looking at the two, simply taking in his surroundings. His earpiece had stopped working a while ago- whether it was because of his distance from the girls, or simply an effect of the base he was inside didn't matter right now.
One of the men slammed his fist against the glass. "I'd suggest you start talking, before we decide to get… creative" he growled, a clear threat in his tone and an evil smile upon his face.
"Hey, no need to get violent…" Ron replied quickly.
"Good, smart choice… Now, where is he?" the man asked.
"He's at the closest mall to here… We were about to do some shopping- you know, change his wardrobe- before you took me away!" The disguised blonde was barely able to hold in his laughter.
…
"I see… so that's the way you want to do things…" the man smirked at him. "I tried to be nice, now you're going to wish you never opened your big mouth…" He pushed a few buttons on the console next to him, the boy was going to be screaming soon enough…
