Chapter 14: Mission Stoppable
Ron had taken off after his little run-in with the pair of gladiators that tried to end him in the forest. He'd kept his pace light, looking around in the hopes of finding the girls and finishing his mission. Ron's search had led him out of the jungle and straight into what looked like a desert, with all the sand and blazing heat already starting to annoy him more than he dared admit.
"Come on… what's so interesting about watching someone trekking through a boring desert? Why not a temple, or an arena of some sort… something that actually FITS the whole gladiator theme?" the disguised blonde complained to himself. He tried his hardest not to slip and fall onto the most-likely blazing sand and get some inside his uniform. That was a torture he really didn't need right now!
The blonde continued moving for a few more minutes when he suddenly turned to the side, he'd definitely heard a voice! 'Another one of those gladiator goons?' the new agent wondered, before he noticed someone laying on the hot sand. 'Did they faint?!' he yelped silently. Ron rushed closer to identify a familiar, red-clad girl. "What are you doing?" he asked her.
Clover glanced up, recognizing her spy team's newest member staring down at her. "Working on my tan… what do you think I'm doing?!" the blonde girl barked back angrily, glaring at him.
"I wouldn't put it past you…" Ron teased, offering his hand to Clover.
The girl on the sand simply sighed, grudgingly accepting his help and getting up. "Thanks…" Clover offered in return, brushing sand off her suit. "So, that WAS you after all. I thought I recognized you when they called our names, but with those monsters chasing us I wasn't sure…"
"I wouldn't call them monsters… just very hungry dogs…" Ron chided, looking around. "You don't like animals?"
"I do… but I prefer it when they DON'T try to use my FACE as a chew toy…" the blonde girl growled, glancing to the side.
"Yeah, I figured as much… I kind of pictured you as the type with a little cute dog in your side purse or something…" Ron smirked at his own words, Clover did seem like the epitome of a spoiled daddy's girl. She was so good, she even made HIM believe it.
"I think you mean a crossbody bag… and I'm not sure if I should be offended or not…" Clover eyed him curiously. "So, what's the plan? I lost the girls a while back, while we were being chased by those costumed freaks…"
"Try to find them, I guess. Also… really? That's a bit rich coming from you, isn't it?" Ron shot back, his smile teasing.
"You're a lot mouthier than usual… didn't I already explain that I'm only interested in the hottest of hotties?" the girl reminded him, rolling her eyes.
"I guess I'll have to live with that knowledge…" the blonde boy scoffed, looking away from her. "So… any ideas what to make of this?" Ron asked.
"What do you- oh, that…" Clover corrected herself, spotting what her companion was staring at.
A few yards away from them the desert came to an abrupt halt, giving way to what looked like an arctic region. It was complete with snow, cold wind, and a damn mountain in the distance.
"I thought this place was crazy before… but this? This is really something. Is that… normal?" Ron asked, glancing at the blonde girl.
"What? That a TV show have an island to mess around in, or this arctic region at the end of a dessert?" the blonde girl asked.
"Yes…" Ron answered, feeling his head start to hurt over the absurdity of the situation.
"No, this is a first for me too. If anything, this looks more like the setting for an evil plot or something…" Clover entered the ice biome, her newest partner following her.
Both spies could hear rapidly approaching noises, it sounded like an engine- or, maybe multiple ones.
"That doesn't sound too good…" Clover moaned, glancing around before spotting several snowmobiles headed their way.
"Maybe they want to give us a ride?" Ron suggested, garnering a skeptical look from the red-clad spy. "What? I'm an optimist."
The snowmobiles appeared to be much bigger than normal ones, looking like large go-carts with a mean face on the front of it. Each was driven by a gladiator, there were a couple of them.
Clover quickly pushed a button on her thick shoes, shifting them into long red skates with what looked like miniature rocket engines at the ends of her heels. "Come on! Get on!" the girl shouted. She grabbed Ron's hand and pulled him to stand behind her, they both sped off and away from their pursuers.
Ron glanced back, eyeing the odd-looking snowmobiles rushing after them. On each one there was a gladiator holding a long weapon, with the business end pointed at them.
"Okay… maaaaaybe I was wrong about them!" Ron yelled over the freezing wind whipping around the pair.
"No… you think?!" Clover shot back with a smirk. "How about you get us a proper ride from them… you know, like you suggested?"
Ron instantly understood what she meant, turning back to face the vehicles. One of them had closed the distance between them in no time, the gladiator swinging his spear around. In a normal situation Ron would have simply dodged, even if he was on a ride at the time.
The only issue was that Clover could possibly get hit instead, which left only one option for him. With a quick glance at his opponent, Ron grabbed the pole of his swinging spear before using it to pull himself onto the snowmobile.
"What are yo-" the man on it roared, Ron wasting no time in kicking the spear-wielder off. The ex-sidekick had already grabbed the wheel, thankful that his missions with Kim had left him with PLENTY of experience with driving these things.
"Thanks for the ride!" Ron called out to the fallen gladiator, openly mocking him. The blonde boy had already spotted one of those drone cameras flying after them, resolving to continue playing for the viewers. 'May as well rile them up and make them focus on me, rather than the girls…'
Ron quickly drove up next to Clover, the woman spotting him easily. "Need a ride?"
The girl smiled, jumping on and joining him. "Nice job! I'd say you've definitely earned some points for this!" Clover glanced at the remaining gladiators still chasing after them, pulling out what looked like a pink hairdryer. As soon as she pressed its trigger the device fired a florescent pink laser, the beam hitting the snow and ice below them. It rapidly started to melt, turning into water that their pursuers fell into. Clover kept firing, until all of their opponents were down for the count.
"Wait! Stop!" Clover suddenly shouted, pointing at the gladiators… who seemed to be having a hard time staying above the surface of the water. "Why do I have to be such a nice person…" she groaned.
"I guess you're just awesome like that…" Ron replied, turning the vehicle around and rushing back.
"Less compliments, more helping!" Clover returned, the smirk on her face softening the impact of the criticism.
"Yes boss…" Ron returned, both teenagers helping the few gladiators who couldn't swim (or were just too heavy) to safety.

Vince King stared intently at the screen, his anger and frustration palpable. This was something he'd never had to deal, not since the start of his show. Sure, he'd seen some impressive athletes come on. People who were completely confident that they were the best- only to realize, right at the start, just how weak they really were. Then Vince had won them over, adding them to his 'staff'.
This new batch had been nothing special in his eyes, only worthy of a quick show (and maybe a little fan service, in the case of those three girls in the skintight outfits). But, that certainly wasn't the case anymore.
Their newest contestants had proven to be the most annoying ones he'd ever had to deal with. They'd already managed to survive not one, but TWO attacks without much trouble. The crowd (and larger TV audience) loved it, if the viewership numbers he was getting were any indication, and that was great… Now, if only his blood wasn't boiling over how incompetent his fighters had proved themselves to be.
"Who are they?" Vince growled to himself, continuing to stare at the screen. He'd already started planning out a new way to deal with them.
Vince would show the watchers at home that NO ONE could make it through his show… even if he needed to do it HIMSELF.
X-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-X
Ron and Clover had already moved to a different area, having finished rescuing the gladiators (the few that they'd helped had been either unconscious or barely able to move). The really odd part had been that every single one had had an odd, golden collar around their necks.
The pair walked side by side, Clover inspecting the weird-looking accessory for a few more seconds before giving up.
"So… any idea what it could be?" Ron asked as he looked around.
"Except for the obvious mindcontrol vibes I'm getting… not really. We'd better tell Jerry about this and hear what he has to say…" the blonde girl replied, pocketing the golden collar.
"Right… then we better get moving and find the rest of the team" the ex-sidekick declared.
"You know, you seem pretty used to this whole team thing… Do you have some prior experience?" Clover suddenly asked, staring at her companion.
"Do I? And here I thought you'd be upset with my teamwork, like Sam was…" Ron shot back at her, surprised by her question.
"Did Sammy say something to you?" the blonde spy cooed, patting him on the shoulder. "Don't worry about it… She may take some time to open up to you, but when she does you won't regret it!" Clover shouted.
"Your very optimistic about that, I see…" Ron observed dryly.
"I guess it's because I already know who you are… I bet Sam will come around, if you give her some time… and tell her who you are" Clover added.
"And Alex?" Ron prompted.
"Eh… you might want to keep some distance from her… Just for a while…" Clover suggested, refusing to elaborate any further on the subject.
"Okay…?" the disguised blonde replied in confusion, what was the problem with Alex? From what Ron had noticed, she'd been very friendly. Even if she was a bit much at times.
The two spies continued walking deeper and deeper inside another jungle biome. There was long grass that made it very difficult to make any progress, not to mention see where they were going.
"Ug… I hate these kinds of places! Do you know what it does to my HAIR?!" the girl whined, trying to defend her golden locks from any stray plants that threatened to get tangled in her hair.
Before Ron was able to respond, he heard a quiet rustle in the tall grass on their right. He had barely enough time to move, suddenly spotting something jumping right at his blonde teammate.
Ron intended to rush over and help Clover when something tackled him as well, slamming directly into his chest.
"Got you! Think you can get the drop on us?!" shouted a chipper, but serious, voice. "Wait… Clover?!"
"Yeah, it's me… think you can get off me now?" the blonde girl growled, laying on her stomach with the ravenette on her back.
"Wait… if you're… then who's-" Sam mumbled, staring at the guy she was currently straddling. Her eyes opened wide in shock, she simply froze when understanding hit her.
Ron couldn't help but stare up at the green-clad spy currently mashed into him. Her full cheeks spread over his lap, it had never been so obvious just how thin that fabric was. With a hard swallow, he opened his mouth.
"Um… Sam? Do you mind getting off?" Ron managed to choke out. He leaned back on his palms and stared at the redheaded teen, hoping SHE'D get up… before SOMETHING ELSE did…
Sam didn't so much move as practically teleport off him, the green-clad teen now pointedly staring away from Ron (and the other girls). Clover simply dusted herself off, making sure to check her hair. Alex shot a somewhat annoyed look at her redheaded teammate, before turning her gaze to him. Her face transformed instantly to a smiling one, moving to approach the downed boy.
Ron took the opportunity to get up and dust himself off. 'Well, that didn't take long…' he mused. The blonde boy couldn't help but notice the disappointed expression now marring Alex's delicate features. 'What's she upset about?' the blonde boy couldn't help but wonder.
…
The team was now back together, all of them sitting in a tall tree that hid them from view. Ron was certain that the drone cameras would be able to find them, but at the very least it should give the teens some time before those muscle-bound gladiators managed to get to them (if they could even climb this high).
Ron looked around, the girls talking amongst themselves. Sam was sitting the farthest away from him, with Clover right next to her. Finally, Alex was sat next to him- leaning against Ron's side.
'She's probably doing that unconsciously…' he concluded, taking a bite of a fruit the girls had given him.
"Well… the quicker we find Reggie, the faster we can get off this island- even if it IS nice and comfortable here…" Alex reasoned, her head shifting to rest upon Ron's back.
"M-Maybe the underground captives can give us some answers…" Sam suggested, pointedly looking away from Alex and their male member. "I saw them in the sewers, when I was running from the gladiators…" she explained, her voice odd. Sam closed her eyes, taking a bite out of her own fruit.
"That's weird… kinda like that thing I saw following me earlier… It looked like a small satellite with wings" Alex interjected, munching on her banana.
"You too?" Ron asked, the girl nodding in response. "Yeah, I saw them as well… I think those are drone cameras. This IS a TV show after all, so…"
"Yep, I think I saw a few when we were in the desert… Also, you think this counts as odd?" Clover questioned, pulling out the golden collar they'd found. "It came from one of the gladiators…"
"I think it's time we talked to those prisoners… they're the only ones who haven't tried to attack us" the redhead of the team argued, jumping down from the tree and glancing up at the rest of her team.
X-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-X
Ron walked along one of the sewers where Sam had claimed she'd seen the prisoners. The spies had decided to split up into two pairs, to cover more ground and see if they were any others being held.
His current partner was walking next to Ron, periodically glancing at him.
"So… Jerry called you to help us out, eh?" Alex commented. "Kinda odd that you didn't arrive with us at the same time… wouldn't that have saved us all some time?"
"Jerry had… something different for me to do. Plus, he wanted to make it look like I wasn't with you girls… on the off chance that something happened" Ron explained, inspecting their surroundings.
"Something different? Oh! You mean that mission he gave you?"
"Y-Yeah, something like that… We should probably keep our eyes peeled, try to see if there are any more prisoners…" Ron responded, what else was he supposed to say?
"Right! We better show the girls just how well we work together!" Alex exclaimed, shooting a wink at her male teammate. She'd been the only one who hadn't gotten a chance to really work with Ron one on one like her two friends had.
'Clover got to walk with him in Paris- and he even worked a little bit with Sam… I need to up my game, if I want him to notice me!' Alex concluded, even if her redheaded friend still didn't seem all that pleased with him. 'But, she didn't say anything when she was straddling him earlier…'
"Right, just keep your eyes open and stay close…" Ron declared- he felt something against his side. "Alex, not THAT close, I can barely WALK…" the blonde chided, glancing away from the face of the ravenette spy pressed up against him.
"You SAID to stay CLOSE… and you still haven't told me your name…" Alex pouted cutely, the girl hugging his arm in between her mounds. "You can tell me, you know… I won't let the girls know, I promise…" she whispered to him.
Ron wasn't sure what to do with the ravenette, she seemed way too curious about him. Did she really just want to know his identity? Was Alex simply teasing him, like she had so many times before… Or, was it something else?
He'd never interacted with girls very much- except for Kim and Monique, who were his friends (or the cheer squad, who hadn't really taken very kindly to him).
"I'll tell you what… you can either tell me your name, or ask me to back off…" Alex offered impishly with a tiny smile. "Your choice…"
'This girl is going to be the death of me… I swear!' The disguised blonde simply sighed, biting his tongue.
Alex smiled at her little victory. While this wasn't exactly the most romantic of locations… she'd take what little opportunity she could find, wearing him down until he gave into her.
After a few more minutes of walking, the pair of spies could confirm that there were not any other prisoners beyond the ones Sam had found. That meant Ron and Alex needed to get back to Sam and Clover and bust this case wide open.
The teens made their way back to the previously assigned rendezvous point… only to find the two girls nowhere in sight. "Hmmm, what're the odds that they're just late?" Ron asked, glancing at the spy who was still strapped to his side.
"Clover might be late sometimes, but never on a mission… and Sam is ALWAYS on time."
"So… it's safe to say something happened. Damn it, we better go find them" Ron growled. The pair left the sewers, searching for their missing friends.
…
Alex and Ron walked through the forest, looking for the missing girls. Their little search had yielded nothing… except finding that the "prison" that Sam had reported was empty. That only left them even more nervous.
After a few minutes, Alex spotted something flying above them. The pair instantly ducked down, hiding from view. They noticed a drone camera scanning the area, most likely trying to locate them.
After a few seconds the contraption finally left the area, allowing them both to relax. "We better keep moving… I don't like those things spying on us, they give me the creep-" Alex mumbled, the ravenette cutting off when something suddenly lunged at both of them from the bushes.
Ron was ready this time, his opponent aiming for his neck. The blonde teen was quick to act, his right hand deflecting the man's attack. Ron turned his assailant to the ground, his knee pressing into their back. The ex-sidekick held both of his enemy's wrists behind his back, even as he continued to struggle. With very little success, Ron's hold on him was near absolute.
"Hey! What gives, Alex?!" Clover shouted angrily.
"Wha- Clover? What are you doing?" Alex asked, staring down at the blonde girl who'd tried to tackle her.
"Being manhandled by you- what do you think I'm doing?!" the blonde spy screeched, Alex getting off of her and helping her up.
"Glad to see you're okay Clover, let me knock this guy out so we can-" Ron greeted his friend, ready to finish off the gladiator that was still struggling underneath him.
"Wait! Stop! He's not one of them!" Clover shouted. "I mean… he was, but he's okay now!" the blonde girl insisted frantically.
Ron stared at the blonde girl, before turning away and glancing at the man he currently had pinned to the ground. "So… he won't try to attack us?" Ron asked.
"He won't…" the man in his hold swore in a gruff tone. "…if you give him a chance to prove it" he finished with a groan, obviously in discomfort.
Ron let go of him, moving away. Clover helped him get back up on his feet.
"Sorry about that Reggie, these are my teammates… they thought you were still being controlled" the blonde spy apologized.
"No need" the older man assured her. He stretched his arms, letting the pain subside, before approaching the male spy. "Sorry about that, we shouldn't have jumped you two… name's Reggie." He offered his hand with a light smile, trying to prove that there were no hard feelings.
Ron looked up at the man, he was quite a bit taller and broader than the blonde boy. Reggie was rippling with muscles, he looked like a star athlete. "Sorry about that, I really wasn't expecting a friendly face" the blonde spy apologized in turn, the two girls discussing their next plan.
"So… are you also an athlete?" Reggie suddenly asked, as both he and Ron walked next to each other.
"Uh… no, not really." The male spy shrugged. "We came here to find out what happened to you… I'm just an agent."
The older man looked surprised for a few moments, before his attention was drawn to the two girls.
"What?! Sammy got captured?!" Alex suddenly yelled, Clover quickly moving to cover her friend's lips.
"Yeah, she did. Well… we both almost did, but Reggie here saved me! Which I'll HAPPILY repay with a nice dinner and a movie!" the blonde girl declared, gazing meaningfully at the athlete. Sadly (for her), the older man's interest was currently trained elsewhere. Reggie was staring at a huge antenna in the shape of a fist, situated on top of a nearby mountain.
"That! We need to destroy that antenna over there! If we do, then we'll release the prisoners!" Reggie shouted. They all glanced at the mountain, it was surrounded by gladiators and several drones that seemed to be scanning the area.
"Yeah… that could be a bit tricky, with everyone waiting for us…" Ron mused, taking in the large number of adversaries between them and their target.
"We need a distraction…" Clover declared.
Both Clover and Reggie stared at Alex for a few moments. 'They want to make HER the bait?' the male spy rapidly concluded. "Leave it to me" Ron swore, he didn't want to leave Alex- or Clover- to run away from a group of bloodthirsty gladiators. "I'll make sure to keep them occupied."
"Right! That leaves US to deal with that antenna" Clover agreed, nodded to her blonde teammate.
X-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-X
'Well, I CLEARLY didn't think this through' Ron chuckled silently. He sprinted away, the gladiators rushing after him like bloodhounds. They didn't honestly have a prayer of catching him, they were all too sluggish and bulky with their heavy armor and weapons to even come close to nabbing Ron.
His idle musings nearly got Ron blindsided, a fist almost hitting him square in the face. 'Did one of them get the drop on me?' Ron wondered, his assumptions cutting off upon noticing WHO it was that had attacked him.
Long legs covered with golden leggings and a short, reddish skirt. Above it the figure wore golden armor, with golden chains and gauntlets on her arms. Finally, the outfit was completed with a golden helmet upon her head.
"Sam… what are you doing?" Ron asked in confusion, carefully eyeing the redhead glaring at him. "Oh man… don't tell me you got yourself controlled… AGAIN!" The boy simply sighed and shook his head.
The girl gritted her teeth, rushing over to hit him- only for Ron to block the attack and smirk at her.
"I mean, you get all angry with ME over not being a team player… But, YOU'RE the one who ends up needing a rescue every time…" A kick nearly took Ron's head off, quickly followed by a backhanded fist. "I just think it's funny… you know?"
Sam roared in fury, diving to tackle the blonde boy to the floor- only to miss entirely, falling to the ground when Ron slid to the side. "I'm honestly trying here… and you're NOT making it any easier. Even when you basically left me to fend for myself against Tuesday… I was cool with that, for the most part-" Sam scrambled to her feet, attempting to kick his legs out from under him- only for the blonde to back away once more.
Ron simply sighed, glancing away. He spotted something moving closer- and around him. "Great… now you guys showed up too…" the blonde teen breathed exasperatedly. Ron glanced at the eight different gladiators now surrounding him, all glaring hotly with their weapons drawn.
Without even waiting for Sam to recover the small group closed in on him in a hurry, Ron muttering something as they did.
X-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-X
A few minutes later Clover, Alex and Reggie had managed to shut down the antenna controlling the gladiators and beat up Vince. The producer had swooped in to attack them himself… using a helicopter armed with lasers and missiles.
'Some gladiator… never heard of one fighting like that' the blonde spy couldn't help but grumble. It was like a caveman fighting against a gunman. And people thought that was interesting to watch? If no one could ever win the show… what was even the point?!
The male spy followed Sam, moving to meet up with the rest of the team. Everyone seemed fine- except Sam, who was still in her armor and was looking a little… banged up.
"There you two are! I was beginning to get worried for a minute there!" Alex shouted, shooting over and attaching herself to Ron's arm like a barnacle.
"Yeah… she wouldn't shut up about it…" Clover growled angrily, glancing away.
"What's up with you?" Sam asked, staring at her blonde friend.
"Eh, let's just say Reggie had to move on… and didn't invited her out to dinner like she wanted…" Alex whispered to Ron and Sam, the pair nodding in response.
'Same old Clover…' Ron mused, he couldn't help but feel at least a LITTLE bad about the girl's poor luck. He felt Alex staring up at him.
"Anyway, are you okay?" the ravenette teen asked.
"Yeah, were fine…" Ron assured her, trying to ignore how soft and warm her slender figure felt pressed up against him. 'She really IS trying to kill me.'
"I meant you… we saw you on the big screen!" Alex squealed, so very excited for some reason.
"What happened?" Sam questioned, moving closer to her ravenette teammate. "He's been really cagey about it, whenever I ask him…"
"I don't really think-" Ron tried to deflect, as Alex moved away from him and approached Sam.
"Oh, you should have seen it! There where so many gladiators after him! He took care of all of them… all while you kept trying to hit him!" Alex explained, laughing. Alex was so carried away, she never even noticed the way Sam was glaring at Ron.
'Great… she probably hates me now…' The blonde teen could only sigh heavily, looking away.
At least the damn mission was OVER.
