Chapter 16: Virus
Another sunny day in Beverly hills had arrived… and with it, a fresh issue for the new male spy (who was pretty confused about his little predicament).
By this point in his life, Ron could say for certain that he'd found himself in almost every type of situation imaginable… especially the bad kind.
A sudden attack? Lame, predictable… and often perpetrated by the same people.
A villain, or criminal, messing things up for the world? Common and easy to deal with…
Some girl ignoring- or, laughing at- him? Painful, but something he was used to by now…
But this? THIS was definitely a new one…
The blonde Stoppable was currently sitting in what looked like a small courtroom; benches available for spectators, as well as what looked like a jury, and even a judge wearing a white wig (despite the fact it really didn't fit the girl who'd taken on the role).
The current defendants (who also seemed to be acting as their own lawyers) were explaining their side of the story.
"Your Honor…" began the redheaded spy, both she and Alex standing at the defendant's table as they talked to the judge.
"Sam, Alex… this court has no choice but to find you guilty of violating this school's dress code…" Clover declared from her spot on the judge's bench, she had the huge wig on and a gavel in her hand.
"But Clover- I mean, Your Honor… our heels are only half an inch higher than the code allows" Sam reasoned, presenting her heels as evidence.
"Can't you give us a break?" Alex added with a small smile, hoping to persuade her blonde friend.
'Why am I even here?' Ron couldn't help but wonder, as he sat in as one of the only jurist watching the trial. A few of his fellows looked mildly interested, but the majority stared at their phones or talked to one another. When Clover had asked him for a favor, and a little bit of his time, this was definitely NOT what he'd expected. Also, talk about being biased…
The blonde boy watched, as Clover glanced over her should at her own back- or, far more likely, her own heels in comparison. The casual action filled Ron with worry… and perhaps a little disappointment. 'She didn't…'
"Well…" the blonde teen spy started, speaking with a suspicious- frankly, guilty smile that just screamed the next sentence would be a bold-faced lie. "…considering the circumstances, I guess I can let you off with a suspended sentence…" Clover's words had landed when both of her friends were already smiling at each other, as if they'd been sure of what she would say.
'I knew it…' Ron groaned internally, heaving a disappointed sigh. He understood that it was beyond trivial, considering what this trial was about. But after dragging both him AND the rest of the students into this, he'd expected for it to more than a kangaroo court.
"Objection! Your Dishonor…" bellowed the prosecutor of this trial. Her dark purple hair swayed, her steely gaze pinning down the corrupt judge (who let out a small 'eep', as if she'd been busted).
"This is total favoritism!" Mandy accused the judge. In any other place, or time, it could easily have ended up a case of career suicide. But, seeing as the overwhelming majority of the courtroom seemed to agree with her statement, it was hardly out of line. Still, Ron couldn't help but admire the girl for striking straight at the heart of the matter.
An older, blonde woman with well-kept hair rose up from her spot on the far side of the room. Ms. Brooks approached the blonde judge, a wooden clipboard in her hand. "I agree… you're much too lenient to be our student court judge, Clover…" the teacher who was responsible for supervising the proceedings declared, she turned to face the ravenette prosecutor. "I'm replacing you with Mandy."
The blonde teacher's words left Clover fuming, pulling off her wig with visible anger and annoyance, fiercely glaring at her ravenette rival.
"Thank you, Miss Brooks" Mandy responded, in a cute voice that made Ron smile. The young male spy knew for a fact that his first friend was a fair, honest person that would surely do the job right. "I swear to restore dignity to this cou-" The girl never got to finish her pledge, the white wig Clover had been wearing having been thrown in her face. The improvised projectile had landed almost perfectly, only a bit cocked to the side, several of the white hairs slipping into her mouth. "…and I'll revive its integrity, too…" Mandy finished, a bit of heat in her tone at Clover's blatant disrespect, she stormed over to the judge's bench.
The young Stoppable stared at the three secret spies, as they all giggled at Mandy (Clover having joined them at the defendant's table. Ron couldn't help but frown slightly at the petty act his friend had been forced to endure.
As soon as Mandy had sat down, she took a second to ponder. The noirette glanced over at the three spies, before smacking her gavel against the wood. "This court finds all three of you in contempt! I'm sentencing you to three weeks of picking up trash!" the ravenette teen shouted, slamming the gavel down once more to punctuate her verdict.
"Next case!" she crowed confidently, ending the trial.
Ron was smiling broadly, happy to see his good friend doling out justice and nabbing a fitting position in the process. He'd have to congratulate her later, when he had the chance. It could seem mean of him to pick a side in a petty spat between Mandy and the spies, but he felt that such a wake-up call would honestly help the spies in the long run.
….
"Mandy, you were amazing!" Ron gushed, as soon as he met up with his friend again. The blonde teen had cornered the noirette after she'd finished with her courtly duties for the day. It had taken Mandy almost an hour to wrap everything up- nevertheless, it had been an incredible sight to Ron.
"O-Oh! I-I, uh…" The girl's typical, confident demeanor seemed to have all but vaporized as the blonde boy's honest compliment struck her.
"I mean… how you handled every case with such ease, how you went from the prosecution to being the judge! So cool!" Ron couldn't help but continue giving his friend the praise she most definitely deserved, leaving her stunned and lost for words.
"O-Of course!" Mandy choked out, barely able to find her voice. The noirette's face was burning hot, she was definitely not ready for this! "I-I have some plans with the girls, s-so I'll-I'll… b-bye!" Ron's friend squealed, suddenly bolting away from the blonde boy before he could say anything more.
Or worse! Before Mandy could make a fool of herself!
"Uh, okay? I'll see you later then" Ron returned, waving at her as he watched the girl rush away to meet her two friends. "Did I say something wrong?" he wondered aloud, his phone ringing.
Ron took the chance and simply answered. After all, there wasn't anyone around him at the moment. "Hello?"
"Ah! Nice to see you answering normally for a change…" Jerry remarked.
"What can I say? I'm a nice guy… and it would look weird otherwise…"
"Quite! Now, if we can move on to the topic at hand? There was something I wanted to ask you…" the older man insisted.
"Sure, do you need me to get to the office or- wha!" Before he was able to act, or even say anything more, a huge tube slithered out of a truck and sucked him inside in less than a second. Ron landed on a large, dusty sofa and stared at his new boss.
"I prefer talking face to face…" the older man finished with a smug smirk, not looking remotely apologetic about the way he'd dragged the blonde inside.
'Looks like I'm going back to using Uncle… or, old man…' the blonde teen mused, coughing from all the dust. "Yeah, I figured… So, what's up?"
Jerry simply nodded, before staring at the boy. "I will also advise you to "change" before the girls get here… unless you want to tell them all about your real identity."
Ron simply nodded and used his little device to disguise himself once more, meanwhile Jerry placed a call to the girls.
"Wait… is that why you chose this place and not your normal office?"
"Obviously… and now we'll- ah! Here they come" the older man observed, smiling as the same vent that had deposited Ron opened once more. Three girls were dropped in the same way Ron had been, only with a bit more surprised screaming involved.
They were all coughing from the amount of dust that had been thrown into the air, trying to cover their faces.
"Can't you get a NORMAL office?" Clover griped in between coughs, staring at her boss in annoyance. First, she'd lost her position to Mandy… and now this? Totally not her day!
"Sorry, ladies… Now that you're all here, we can get started-"
"Wait Jerry!" Alex suddenly cut him off. "Aren't you forgetting about someone?" the ravenette teen hinted, thinking about one boy in particular.
"No, I don't believe I did…" Jerry insisted.
"What hit me?" the freshly-disguised Ron groaned, staring at the girl who'd landed in his lap quite painfully (despite how soft she felt).
"Oh, um… Sorry about that, new guy…" Sam apologized sheepishly, smiling and scratching her head, she'd only just now noticed where she was sitting.
"No problem… it's not your fault, Sam…" Ron assured her, glaring at Jerry for not giving him any warning. Was it really too much to ask for, just a simple 'you probably want to move to the side, or risk getting smothered'?
Alex glared at her redheaded teammate, her lips darting close to the redhead's ear. "Sammy, switch places with me…" she whispered, a bit of heat in her tone.
Sam seemed to grasp the implications, practically jumping out of the disguised blonde's lap. The redhead stood next to the sofa and glared at Alex, red splattered on her face.
"Now that we've gotten that out of the way-" Alex cooed sweetly, moving to sit on Ron's lap.
"Sorry Alex… but may I remained you that all of you have a MISSION?" the leader of WHOOP interjected, grabbing everyone's attention.
"A mission for all four of us, right off the bat? Must be something serious then…" Clover reasoned, listening intently.
"About that… I'm not entirely sure…" Jerry answered. He glanced at a screen behind him, starting to explain the nature of their situation.
Alex still took the chance to perch upon Ron's lap, smiling innocently as she sat through the briefing.
Sam reluctantly took a seat next to Ron… trying her hardest not to glance at her smiling, ravenette friend.
Ron did his best to listen to the briefing… while doing his damnedest to ignore the feeling of Alex lightly rocking on top of him. After Jerry finished his explanation, Ron thought deeply about it.
Apparently, there had been several people who'd been attacked by computerized machines. A student trapped on a roller-coaster for almost FOURTEEN hours, with no stop or rest. A man, one who'd been tossed around by an airport luggage machine. The last was a woman, she'd become stuck inside an elevator and then shaken up like a can of soda.
If it wasn't obvious… there had to be a virus or something, running wild.
"Yikes… one more reason why it's healthier to use the stairs…" Sam pointed out as an afterthought.
Ron couldn't hold back the smile on his face, the girls staring at him. "Sorry… so, what do we know so far?"
"At this moment?" Jerry stared at the disguised blonde a few moments, before typing on his computer.
"Yeah, something HAS to connect all three."
"Well… the woman is a principal of a school, the man who was attacked at the airport is a PE teacher, and the boy- who is still stuck on that roller-coaster- is a student at the very same school…" the older man declared. Jerry watched, as his newest agent simply cupped his face.
"You have an idea?"
Ron nodded his head for yes. "Yeah… I'm thinking there's a guy out there with a chip on his shoulder and a whole lot of experience in hacking…"
"A hacker? What makes you so sure? …and why is it a 'he'?" Clover challenged, clearly interested in his reasoning.
"First, the guy on the roller-coaster strikes me as a resident bully. You know, the kind that would totally target the nerdy boys of his school… I doubt he'd ever go and bully a girl…" Ron started to explain. "The second man is a physical education teacher, someone who'd likely try and push the weakest students to reach the same level as the rest of the class and would force them to do extra work. …and the last one? A strict principal that most likely said something to him at some point…"
Jerry and the girls stared at Ron for a few seconds, Jerry was the first to speak. "Interesting… and you think the suspect is this so-called hacker?"
"Yeah, maybe you could look into the guy on the roller-coaster and find out who else is in his PE class… It has to be someone who's got at least some level of access to the more private areas of their school…" Ron added, Jerry nodding his assent.
"I'll check it out and keep you updated. In the meantime, you'll all be heading to that Las Vegas amusement park to free the young man in question from that roller-coaster." With the final details out of the way, Jerry handed them their gadgets for the mission. Among them was a liquid nitrogen perfume, as well as a camera with a laser in it… Ron decided not to ask.
….
On their way to Las Vegas, the four shared the same small jet they had before. …and it STILL only had THREE seats, which left him to sit with the girls at his sides. Only this time it was Clover that was driving, with Sam supporting Alex in her lap.
"I'll have to talk to Jerry about upgrading the plane to have four seats, or get us a new ride entirely…" the redheaded teen spy observed, holding Alex.
"We don't need to bother Jerry with such little things… I don't have an issue with this…" Alex declared from her spot.
"I do!" Sam added, annoyance in her tone.
"Then let go! I don't have to sit on YOU!" Alex shot back, trying to break free of her friend's grasp (and slide into RON'S lap).
"Yeah… not happening…" Sam replied, still fighting to keep Alex from doing anything untoward.
Ron tried to ignore the two, looking over at the blonde girl who was flying the plane. "How long until we get there?" he asked.
Clover glanced at him. "What's the matter, eager to run away?" she teased, smirking at him.
"No…" it totally WAS the reason. "I'm just worried about that guy… fourteen hours on a roller-coaster?" Ron shuddered at the very thought.
"Really? Even if he's actually a bully, like you said?" Clover challenged.
"Obviously!"
A thought hit Alex, the noirette gasping in shock. "Say… how do you even know so much about that? Were you a bully too?" she asked.
Sam had agreed with Alex's shock. While it was true that their new teammate had the skill, and the power, to end up the "top dog" any place he went… even imagining him as a bully was something the redhead had a hard time with.
Ron simply started to laugh. "Me? A bully? No… you may not believe it, but I used to get bullied… A LOT!" The blonde boy recalled the numerous times the jocks of his old school had bullied him- and that didn't even include Bonnie!
"You? Getting bullied?" Sam questioned, deeply skeptical of Ron's claim.
"Yeah, is it really so hard to believe?"
"Well… you're so awesome, it just seems like a bit of a stretch…" Alex clarified, staring at the boy.
Ron's eyebrow rose, he tilted his head up to look the yellow-clad spy in the eye. "Really? Are you going to tell me that someone tried to bully you and you used your skills to put them in their place?" he asked.
"W-Well… no, but-"
"Exactly…" Ron smirked. "I had to HIDE what I know… just like YOU GIRLS do…"
"You said "used to" …what changed?" Sam suddenly asked.
"My friend happened…" Ron started to think of Kim, the incredible girl who could do anything. "She made sure to scare off anyone who tried to bully me…"
"Is that the same one you told me about before?" Sam inquired, clearly interested in Ron's friend.
"Yep! That's her!" Ron enthused, a big smile on his face.
"Is she just a friend?" Alex questioned, suddenly looking a lot more serious.
"She's my best friend! Ever since Pre-k…" the boy declared warmly.
Alex couldn't help but feel a tinge of jealousy at that- and she wasn't the only one…
"Alright girls, and new guy, were about to land!" Clover warned, starting the sequence to touch down.
….
The four stared at the runaway roller-coaster, complete with one guy still screaming for help. Ron could honestly say that he felt sorry for the dude…
"Okay, so, how do we get him down?" Alex wondered, looking at her teammates.
"I'm guessing the controls are out, if the people running this place couldn't manage it…" the disguised blonde reasoned.
"Just to be sure… you can't stop the ride, right?" Sam asked the boy.
"And make the guy instantly come to a screeching halt? No thanks! It'd be like a car crash if I did…"
"I figured…" Sam remarked, glancing at the tracks before looking at Clover. "I think I have an idea…"
Clover, having agreed with Sam's plan, pulled out her laser camera. The blonde girl aimed at the tracks and, after a few seconds, already had them broken and bent upwards.
"You sure about this?" Ron asked, clearly worried.
"This is the only thing I can think of at the moment- besides cutting the power, but that'll take too long" Sam explained, staring at the approaching ride. "Here it comes!" she yelled. Readying herself, as soon as the crazy ride was launched into the air she jumped on top of it.
Both the guy and Sam rocketed to an impressive height, making an amazing arc. Sam's quick thinking managed to free the victim, both of them jumping off the ride before it crashed in a loud (and very deadly) pile of twisted metal.
"Remind me to stick to the Merry-Go-Round from now on…" Sam mumbled to herself, staring at what was left of the train.
"T-Thank you…" the guy she'd just saved stammered, sobbing like a little kid, not that anyone could blame him.

A few minutes later, the team of spies plus one headed for their next location. Now on their way to the school, they rode an elevator going down. The young teen had calmed down by this point, looking quite tired after his adrenaline had run its course.
"So… you say that the computerized voice knew your name?" Ron asked, staring at the guy.
"Yeah… no idea how, man… I'm on the football team and I don't study computers, or anything else…" the guy swore.
"Did you say football?" Clover cooed, a little excited by the fact that the guy was popular.
"I bet you ace ALL your tests…" Sam added, sarcasm in her tone.
"I don't have to, babe… I just grab the nearest nerd and "persuade" him to help me…" the guy bragged, punching his open palm to show his intent.
Ron simply smiled, knowing his suspicions had been correct.
The girls all scoffed, the elevator let out a ping and opened its doors.
"Speaking as a nerd, I think I know why computers attack you…" Sam muttered, looking annoyed with the jock.
"Wha- computers? Like, there's more than one?" the guy asked dumbly.
"What she means is that you must have pissed someone off…" Ron explained, glancing around. "Enough to paint a nice, big target on your back…" the disguised blonde added, quickly coming to a halt.
"Mmm? What's wrong?" Clover asked, glancing at their newest member (who was looking a little worried).
"I just noticed that we're in a pretty automated area…"
"Now that you mention it-" Alex began, cutting off when something small on the floor drove up to her with a mechanical whir.
The spies all turned in time to see a humanoid robot with four arms that'd been cooking had left its spot. It was now moving towards them, its limbs pointed at the group menacingly.
"W-What's going on?! Why are they coming at me like that?" the jock panicked, glancing wildly around them.
They'd been surrounded by four cooking robots that were approaching closer and closer, all wielding different utensils. A whisk for beating eggs spun fast enough to act as a drill, a meat tenderizer that could punch a hole in a wall, and (for some reason) two of them had buzz saws attached to them!
'What kind of meals did you think they'd be preparing when you were designing them!?' Ron screamed silently, wondering if he'd ever get the chance to ask their lead engineer.
"Naughty, naughty!" chastised a computerized voice. "Your punishment isn't over!" it crowed, the robots moving closer.
"Okay! Say cheese!" Clover shouted, pulling out a camera from her bag and aiming it at the closest robot.
Before she was able to do anything Ron jumped forward, grabbing two of the robot's arms… before ripping them off in a show of strength. These were nothing compared to the robots he and Kim had dealt with on a regular basis, but still pretty dangerous.
"New guy! What are you doing? I had it under-" the blonde girl started to complain, when he cut her off.
"Wrong camera!" Ron called out, still holding pieces of the now destroyed robot.
Clover looked down, only now realizing that the Laser Camera was STILL inside her bag. Obviously, what she was currently holding in her hands was a NORMAL camera. 'T-that could have ended badly…' she moaned silently.
"Get out of the way!" Sam shouted, leaping forward and pushing the football player out of the path of another robot barreling at him.
"You've been a bad boy!" the computerized voice teased from a robot, the machine swinging its buzz saw arm at Sam.
The redheaded teen spotted a robot flying past her head, striking the one attacking her- effectively destroying both in seconds.
On her side, Alex watched as the small robot that was chasing her paused. Its back suddenly opened and five metallic tentacles, complete with razor-sharp scissors, emerged… all pointed towards her. The girl barely had time to jump and duck, the scissors landing on her small armored bag. The case was split in half, like a hot knife through butter.
Clover managed to find the right camera, aiming her gadget at the robot chasing Alex. The Laser Camera cut it in two, before it could slice a few layers off her friend.
Sam rose up from the floor, taking aim with a gadget of her own and quickly melting the last robot after a few seconds.
"Wow… that was TOO close!" Alex yelled, checking if she was missing any limbs or hair.
"Looks like we got them all…" Sam pointed out, looking around for anything else that could attack them. Luckily, everyone in the vicinity had run off the second the robot apocalypse had arrived.
"I think it's safe to say that there is definitely someone after him…" Clover remarked, pointing at the jock. The bully was now huddled on the floor in a fetal position, hugging his legs to his chest, shaking in fear. "We gotta move him somewhere safe…"
"I'll call a couple of agents to pick him up…" Sam glanced at Ron for a moment. "We still need to head to Italy and get to that gym teacher, before it's too late…"
"Good idea! Now, we just need to- watch out!" Ron shouted, pointing towards another robot as it rolled towards them. It looked like a robotic slot machine with a handle on its side.
Its three symbols changed to show boom signs, signaling what was about to happen.
"Oh? You want some too?!" the ravenette screeched.
Alex quickly pulled out one of her gadgets, firing a supersonic sound wave that made the robot's clear glass crack. Two seconds later it completely shattered, dozens and dozens of coins scattering over the floor.
"Good work, Alex… Now, let's get out of here- before anything else shows up!" Clover shouted, determined to get to the bottom of this mess.
