Chapter 18: Deserted
The team of spies had just been debriefed by Jerry, following their successful mission against the so called 'hacker'. They had found and delt with him, although Ron couldn't say he'd ever defeated a bad guy using a glass of juicy before today. A can of soda to find one of Drakken's secret bases, yes… but a glass of liquid? He did remember Kim stopping Drakken with her hair band at some point.
Maybe this was a sign that Ron was getting closer to her level with every mission he completed! That thought really put a spring in his step!
Jerry had escorted the girls away after they'd finished describing what had happened to him. Both Alex and Sam had said their goodbyes to Ron, the redhead nodding at him approvingly alongside a quick hug from the dark-haired spy that felt just a little bit cheeky. Clover had only given him a wink, which Ron had accepted with a nod and a smile.
At the very least, any animosity between him and the girls had completely vanished- especially Sam.
"So… once again, I have to say, that was some very good work there" Jerry praised, the older man now standing next to Ron without anyone else around.
"You've mentioned that already… any reason for me to hear it alone?" Ron wondered aloud, did Jerry want something?
"Not really, I was simply impressed that you managed to take care of both the hacker and missiles at the same time…" the older man replied, pausing to glance around. "You know, we usually only field teams of three. Not because four is an unlucky number or anything… but because we felt that a smaller team might be able to solve things without alerting too many people…"
Ron could understand Jerry's point, he and Kim (and Wade) were the same in that regard. "Yeah, I get that… By the way, what's going to happen to Adam?" he decided to ask, the question had been bothering him.
"Funny you should mention it, I wanted to ask your opinion on the matter…" the older spy admitted, staring at his many agents still cleaning up the place. "Adam poses a bit of a problem, he is the son of a very important figure and sending him to prison over this just won't sit well with him…"
"Not that you could really put him in prison, seeing as he's still a minor…" Ron commented.
"Not a normal, or official, one…" Jerry responded cryptically, glancing away. "In any case, I wanted to ask your opinion on the issue… what do you think we should do with him?"
"You're asking ME?!"
The older man nodded. "You and Sam interacted with him the most, I'd like to know what you think…"
Ron looked at the floor, what did Jerry want him to say?
That Adam was a victim? A villain? Some misguided idiot with more brains then common sense?
He was sure Sam would be thinking the same thing, seeing as the girl knew Adam had tried to change their grades and maybe even spied on them a little.
But, then again…
"He's an idiot…" Ron suddenly declared, the older man staring at him. "It doesn't matter who he's related to, Adam needs to pay for what he almost did… But- at the same time- if we do throw the book at him, we could end up facing another Tim Scam…"
Jerry nodded; he was well aware that Tim was once a productive member of WHOOP, one that had gone rouge because of some perceived mistreatment. So, if Adam had the potential to end up just like him? It was best they address this little issue constructively, lest it fester into something worse.
"I'd recommend you let him off with probation, but only if he agrees to work for you… then you can show him how much better off he would be if he worked for the good guys along the way…" Ron reasoned.
"Mmm… I see…" Jerry muttered, before a smile appeared on his face. "Well, I suppose it's a good thing that I've already assigned him to one of our research facilities…"
Ron smiled at the older man, "very sneaky…"
"I'm not sure what you mean… but I do learn from my past mistakes. And don't worry, I made sure to give him enough incentive not to try anything like that again…"
Ron could only nod at the older man, it was nice to see that he had some sense. By this point Ron's ride was already here, waiting to take him back home.
X-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-X
A few days later, Ron was sitting in the cafeteria. He was sharing a table with Alex and Donna, of all people, the two girls looked to be on better terms now.
He wasn't sure if it was because of him, or because the ladies weren't paying much attention to one another.
At the moment Ron was glancing around, very confused by what he'd just heard from the dark-haired spy.
"Homecoming queen?" he echoed, just to make sure he understood.
Alex nodded, taking a bite of her food. "Yeah, didn't you have those at your old school?"
Ron took a moment to try and recall. He did remember Kim telling him that she'd won a few times, even when she wasn't trying to. He'd grinned like a fool at Bonnie's reaction that one time, seeing her fuming face had been absolutely amazing! Ron chuckled at the memory. "No, they had 'em… but I didn't really pay too much attention…" Ron confessed, shrugging as he spoke, seeing no reason to lie.
"So, you're also not one for all of this 'popularity' bullshit… Good to know someone else here has some brains…" Donna interjected. The short-haired redhead smirked at him approvingly, glad to know he wasn't another one of the 'sheep'.
"I'm not sure I like the way you said that…" Alex responded, irate at what such a statement implied about Clover.
"Pfft…" Donna scoffed loudly, staring aggressively at the spy. "Like I care what you think…"
Ron stared at Donna, slightly annoyed. Clover and Mandy were his friends, both were currently competing for the title of homecoming queen. Not to mention that Kim had also been one in the past, regardless of whether she'd actively sought out the position or not.
He wouldn't let ANYONE talk about KP like that.
Donna had obviously noticed the way Ron was staring at her, the redhead looking away in discomfort for a few seconds to avoid his glare. "M-maybe I was a bit too… harsh."
Alex could only smirk at the other girl. "Well, that didn't take long…" she whispered. Though not quietly enough, Donna glaring at her in response with a bit of red on her cheeks.
From what Ron could see, all the girls who were currently competing had to show why they were the best candidate. Some stood around and tried handing out flyers, with little success. The rest had apparently gone the extra mile, making a video clip that played on a huge screen in the cafeteria. Hell, one or two of them had even brought a freaking marching band to accompany them.
Worse, apparently no one had any issues with it! They were too busy cheering for the last one, who'd invited a small band to play in the middle of the cafeteria. 'So, it's a popularity contest… for whoever makes the most noise and impact?' Ron couldn't fault them, but it still seemed odd to him.
He noticed when Alex's phone emitted a familiar ring. She frowned for a split second, before excusing herself and leaving in a hurry.
'So… looks like it's another mission…' Ron concluded. This was kind of soon, in his experience. Even Drakken and the usual baddies he was used to dealing with took some time to get ready, was this the kind of frequency Global Justice had to deal with?
The blonde's thoughts cut off upon noticing Donna staring at him with a sly smile, apparently pleased about something.
"Now that the annoying little girl's out of the way…" Donna started to say as she leaned closer, "how about we go back to what we were talking about before?"
'Oh, that…' Ron smiled at her, he didn't really see what the big deal was. "I appreciate the thought, but Mandy already gave me a tour of all the best spots around. I wouldn't want you to waste your time…" Donna had offered to show him around town, as a sort of apology for how she'd acted when they first met.
Not that she'd admit it around anyone else.
"It's my time to waste… Besides, I'm pretty sure I know of a few places that Mandy wouldn't even dream of getting close to. So… what do you say?" the girl asked, confidence in her tone.
'It could be fun… and Kim always used to insist that I needed to try and make as many friends as I could…' the blonde Stoppable pondered, he didn't really see a reason to oppose the idea. If anything, it might be fun to see what Donna was like outside of school.
"Well-" Ron was ready to give the girl his response when his phone went off, the ringtone rather familiar. He glanced at the caller's name before looking at the redheaded girl, she encouraged him to answer it.
"Hello Uncle… is there a new problem?" Ron asked.
"You could say that… You and the girls will have to take care of it, so if you wouldn't mind walking out of the room?" Jerry replied vaguely, though the blonde boy understood the situation quite well.
"Right… I guess I'll see you soon then?" The line went silent, Ron slipping the small device back into his pocket.
"Bad news?" Donna asked, clearly interested.
"Not really… but I have to help my uncle with something…" the blonde gave as an excuse, before heading out of the room and looking for a quiet place.
Ron didn't even manage to turn the corner before he was sucked into a large, man-sized canister. It was shoved into what seemed like an odd metal tube, the tube launching him into the air in what he now realized was a one-person rocket.
"At least he keeps it interesting!"
X-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-X
The girls had been listening to Jerry's explanation of their newest mission, looking just a little bit dirty courtesy of their ride over. But could you really blame them after having been sucked into a literal trash can, then launched into orbit, before finally being dropped onto a moving ship where their boss was waiting?
Even when one of them had a different objective in mind…
"Great, how am I supposed to campaign when I'm stuck in Africa?!" Clover whined, as all she could think about was being crowned homecoming queen.
"Right… so, that's why I'm sending you to take care of this…" the older man responded, not really paying any attention to the blonde girl's complaining.
"But Jerry, what about our new member? Is he not joining us this time?" Sam asked, Alex nodding in agreement.
The older spy's reply was drowned out by the roar of a small jet engine, before a second pod landed next to the one the girls had arrived in. Emerging from it was their newest member, who was also looking quite dusty.
"Jerry! Do you have to do this EVERY time?!" Ron, already in his disguise, shouted. He dusted off his shoulders, before noticing the girls next to him on the couch.
"You too, huh?" Clover chirped, patting his shoulder. "Don't worry, you get used to it… despite our best efforts…"
Ron realized that one of the spies was missing, a certain raven-haired minx that always put him on edge. "Hey, what about Alex? Where is she?" he asked, figuring that- unless he was missing something- she wasn't around.
"Umm… new guy?" Sam piped up from her spot. "You MAY want to look down…" she finished, pointing underneath him.
Ron followed her gaze to see the missing spy underneath him, acting as his seat, he paled as he looked her over.
"Glad to see you missed me too…" Alex whispered to Ron, the boy jerking up and away from her. She glanced over to Sam in annoyance, "did you really HAVE to tell him? I wanted to see how long it took him to notice!" she whined cutely at her friend.
Ron looked at Jerry, signaling him with his eyes to get on with the mission briefing (preferably before the little minx got any more ideas).
"Now that I have you all here, if we could get back to your assignment?" the older man prodded in a professional tone. He pointed at the screen behind him, the image changing to show a map.
…
From what Ron understood, the mission was to protect and prevent a kidnapping attempt on a queen. She'd already almost been kidnapped once, thanks to an antigravity device that literally lifted the queen from her palace. The perpetrator behind the attack was thought to be an enemy nation that had been in conflict with them for quite some time.
It was the spies' job to put an end to this whole mess, before tensions escalated any further and made things worse between both nations.
Ron couldn't say that he'd ever been to Africa before, so this would be an interesting mission to say the least. He was also stoked about their newest gadget. No, Jerry still hadn't gotten him a communicator he could whip out and not be laughed at, but he did get them all a huge drill car they could use. The thing just looked way too cool!
Ron just hoped that it wouldn't end up being PINK.
The only mistake made was Sam innocently asking: "how do get over there?"
That had led to Jerry simply smiling as the whole area, sofa included, was pulled out from underneath them. All four were dropped on their faces, ending up in different positions upon the four seats waiting for them.
Alex had landed face first where she was supposed to be sitting, her belly draped over the seat.
Sam was on her back, her legs stuck up at an odd angle.
Clover had somehow managed to land on her butt, even if just barely.
The last was the male spy, who had landed legs first… right in front of Alex, who had her ass pointed towards Ron. He was mere inches from that firm, heart-shaped perfection. The glass roof that had been open before now closed, pushing Ron forward just enough for his lap to crash into Alex's ass. Before he could even say anything, the male spy noticed that at his current angle he was looking right between Sam's legs.
His eyes opened wide in shock, Ron finding himself unable to turn away. He ought to curse the fact that she chose today to wear a skirt… an awfully short green skirt with matching knee-high stockings that really messed with his head. Ron practically gaped at the amazing sight… and that's when he noticed she'd caught him staring.
Both their faces turned beet red as the pod they were currently in started shaking, then launched forward. Alex's ass started to vibrate as well, with the blonde boy still mashed up against her, as they traveled towards their destination.
Ron hated how amazing she felt… and that he wanted to buy his new boss a present for this! Damn his hormones!
The male spy was too distracted to notice that a red-faced Alex was biting her lips, nails digging into the seat to keep herself from falling, she might have a bit of trouble after this.
X-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-X
It took a bit of wriggling, but Ron was finally able to dismount Alex's ass. He instantly took the farthest away seat he could from the girls, with Clover sitting next to him.
After about an hour or so they reached their first destination, a man waiting patiently for them. He was a local, there to provide some suitable clothing and four camels for the last leg of their journey.
…
"Okay… NOW can we talk about why all of you are so quiet?" Clover griped, annoyance and curiosity finally getting the best of her.
"W-What do you mean?" Ron stammered, riding on his camel next to her.
"Don't 'what do you mean' me… I'm talking about THAT…" She pointed a finger at the two spies a few feet from them, looking as far away from the blonde pair as possible.
"I'm not really sure what you want me to say…" he somehow replied with a straight face.
Clover rolled her eyes, "I already told you you're not that good of an actor… But whatever… we do have bigger things to worry about…" the blonde female spy admitted.
Ron's gaze turned serious, worrying that they might have been found out or that there was an issue only Clover had noticed. She was a talented spy, after all.
"It's official… this country is going to make me miss homecoming and lose…" the blonde girl groaned, draped over her reins in an overly dramatic fashion.
Ron wanted to facepalm, still shocked by his teammate's priorities. 'This girl…' he breathed in deeply, staring at her. "Can't you ask someone to… I don't know, help out while you're away? I mean… all they really need to do is put your disk into the screen and let it do its job…" he offered, she was really making a big deal out of nothing.
"Wait, that's it!" Clover shouted, perking up and pulling out her Compowder. She opened the small device, pressing some buttons.
'See?! Drama over nothing…' Ron couldn't help but smile to himself, happy to have helped his blonde friend. He glanced back at the two spies behind them, spotting Alex's head turning away as soon as he did. 'Yep… still awkward…' Ron forced himself to look at Clover once more, to see how she was doing.
"I'm out of town and I was wondering if your offer to help me with my campaign still stands?" the blonde girl asked her 'friend'. Ron didn't know who she was talking to, but as long they agreed to help Clover, they were fine by him.
"You will!? That's great!" she shouted happily, their answer abundantly clear.
'Yep, you can always count on a good friend-' he thought to himself with a small smile, before the girl's expression turned to shock. '…to help out?'
"Oh, come on Arnold… it wasn't my fault… it was just some bad sushi that made me act that way…" Clover insisted.
Ron could only stare, dumfounded. 'Act like what?' He was really getting into this, which wasn't like him at all.
The girl smiled brightly. "Anything Arnold, just name it!"
"WHAT!?" Clover suddenly screamed in shock. All the spies stared at her in confusion, she waved them off. "Uh… how about a nice lunch date instead?"
Ron's face darkened, he already had a pretty good idea what the situation was. Some guy that Clover considered a friend was willing to help her out… but only in exchange for a favor. On top of that, said favor involved going out on a date- or something of the like. 'Some friend…' The young Stoppable committed Arnold's name to memory, vowing to have a chat with him whenever he got the chance.
"Fine… I'll do it…" she relented, looking about as happy as Ron did. "But only for ONE day! And only if I win!" Clover ended the call, a resigned expression on her face. "Things are finally looking up…" she remarked, before noticing the boy next to her. "That's quite a scary look you have there… something I should be worried about?"
Ron simply glanced away. "No… don't mind me, just remembered something unpleasant…" He was already feeling pretty upset, just from what he'd overheard. If someone had pulled the same stunt on Kim, Ron wasn't sure what he'd have done…
"Okay… back to the mission. Uh… I just wish I could find something on this map!" Clover shouted, staring at the large, unfolded piece of paper literally blocking her view.
"Or…" Alex and Sam had finally decided to join them, "we could ask for directions from whoever lives in that house…" the noirette suggested. They all stared at the huge stone structure their friend was pointing at.
"Alex… that's not a house, it's a palace!" Both Sam and Clover shouted. The group simply gazed at the enormous white structure, before shaking off their awe and moving towards it.
"Now you guys, be on your best behavior! We will be dealing with a real queen!" Sam lectured, looking at their newest member.
"Why are you staring at me like that?" Ron questioned, only receiving a stern look from the redheaded girl before she glanced away. 'What did I do now?'
X-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-X
The group had entered the palace, although it had taken some convincing on the girls' part. Most of the gardeners on the outside were big, burly man while the workers inside the palace were almost exclusively female.
They were finally granted access when the queen herself had agreed to let a man she did not know approach her throne room. While the hassle had annoyed Ron, he couldn't fault her for wanting to be careful with outsiders.
The four spies kneeled in front of a simple, elegant throne. A beautiful woman sat on the throne, creamy white robes draped over her like royalty.
"I'm Queen Tessara, this is my sister Makeda…" She gestured towards another woman who was standing by her side, gazing at the newcomers with indifference. "I assumed you've been briefed concerning the kidnapping attempt?" the queen asked.
"Totally!" Clover exclaimed, before correcting herself. "I mean… indeed, Jerry told us all about it… it sounded quite frightening, your honor."
Ron wanted to roll his eyes at her tone, but was glad he didn't need to speak himself.
"Especially considering that the nation's leader and I are to attend a conference in Geneva to sign a peace treaty… the fate of our nations depends on my safety" Tessara added, not at all mincing her words.
"Well…" Alex piped up. "The best way to keep her excellency safe, is to keep her- I mean you out of sight…"
The queen nodded. "True… but the palace is having a celebratory party tonight and I'm obligated to attend…" she explained.
"Can't her excellency simply not attend?" Ron couldn't help but ask, his voice carrying in the room. "I mean, you are the queen and you could always just announce that you're not feeling your best-"
"I'm afraid it is not an option…" the queen's sister insisted, cutting Ron off and drawing the spies' gazes. "The queen is to be seen at all times of great importance… for her to simply 'not attend' would demoralize the people…"
"Wouldn't it be worse if she got hurt?" Ron challenged, not caring how he sounded.
"New guy!" Sam whispered loudly, trying to silence him. "Well, in that case, we'll need to think of another plan…"
"Please excuse me… but I need to consult with Makeda about the festivities…" interjected a handsome man with long, flowing black hair and a dashing smile.
"Oh… n-no problem…" Clover stammered, instantly smitten by his pretty face. The rest of her team simply resigned themselves, this behavior quite normal for the blonde girl.
Ron couldn't help but watch the queen and her sister, both hugging as Makeda excused herself. "I can't tell you how thankful our people are for your protection…" with those parting words, she left with the handsome man.
Sam (now taking the lead) questioned the queen about the kidnapping attempt, anything that could help them foil the next attempt.
Clover couldn't help but compare her room to the royal chambers. Her bedroom was actually slightly bigger, the main difference being this bed was made of SOLID GOLD.
Sam and Alex proceeded to find a strange green powder next to the window where, according to the queen, she fell during the kidnapping attempt. "I'll send this to Jerry right away… Now, about tonight's party… I was thinking that one of us could pose as Tassara and the others will-"
"Wait, what?" Ron suddenly piped up. "You want one of you three to disguise yourselves as the queen?" he asked, already having a bad feeling about this.
"Yes…" Sam shot back. "The rest of us will pose as servants and stop any kidnapping attempts." She gave him a serious look, one that screamed 'be professional'.
Ron couldn't really argue, not without looking odd to his friends and the queen, if only they weren't dealing with royalty…
"I think it's a great idea, Sammy!" Clover literally snatched the crown right off Tessara's head, proceeding to place it upon her own. "And of course, I'll play the role of the queen!" she shouted, posing in front of a mirror in the room. Clover talked about her queenly duties and how she no longer had to worry about becoming homecoming queen.
Ron could only shake his head, 'still bothered by it…'
