Chapter 19: Queenly Duties

Lost in her own little world, Clover was entirely too busy posing in front of a mirror with a golden crown atop her head. The headwear shimmered, jewels scattered across it, emphasizing her short blonde hair underneath. She imagined herself a queen, draped in luxury and commanding the attention of everyone around her with a casual flick of her wrist. In this fantasy servants anticipated Clover's every whim, showered her with gifts, and orchestrated lavish banquets, all to please her.

"Um? Earth to Clover!" the exasperated voice of Sam finally broke through her daydream. "Maybe we should let the actual queen decide?" Both she and Alex stood awkwardly by the queen's side, their faces etched with a mixture of annoyance and embarrassment (mirrored even more heavily by their new teammate).

Clover blinked rapidly, momentarily disoriented. "Oh, sorry guys…" she mumbled, her thoughts still wandering. She offered a half-hearted apology, even as that imagined throne continued to tempt her. Sam and Alex exchanged a knowing look before glancing at Ron. This wasn't the first time Clover had focused on her daydreams, leaving them behind.

Ron could only watch the blonde girl's antics for so long before he turned away to inspect the room. 'How did the queen end up in the middle of a kidnapping? And how is it possible she didn't see anyone…' he mused, there was something strange going on here.

X-=-=-=-X

Later that evening, a grand celebration was being hosted in a different part of the palace. Inside an elegant garden a sea of well-dressed, powerful figures mingled. Their hushed conversations were a blend of social pleasantries and strategic negotiations, of ambition and unspoken desires.

And there amidst a sea of glittering jewels and fake smiles was Clover. Except now she wasn't just daydreaming, she was disguised as the Queen of Lyrobia with a very convincing wig covering her vibrant blonde hair. She moved through the crowd, one hand outstretched in a practiced gesture of greeting that the real queen had taught her. Clover listened, offered polite smiles and even managed a few witty remarks, all carefully constructed to maintain the illusion. It was a performance, rehearsed by the blonde and flawlessly executed.

The rest of the team could definitely agree that she was doing a good job with her acting, so much so that Sam and Alex wondered if she'd practiced in front of a mirror.

Watching from the sidelines, Ron was busy attending to his part of their mission. He stood with an empty tray in his hands, dressed in a suit identical to the male staff. Ron's eyes were constantly scanning the room, his presence providing a subtle reassurance. He was ready to react to any threat to protect Clover, his fellow agent.

He continued to observe, his blonde friend was looking a bit distorted and even a tad exhausted. Ron could easily imagine that she'd probably expected something different from her role.

"That's a really serious expression you've got there…" a familiar voice observed from next to him.

Ron turned, quickly recognizing Alex. She was currently wearing an almost see-through veil obscuring the lower half of her face, a long dress that covering her body, alongside a few gold necklaces and earrings. She was still recognizable to him… it was impossible for her not to be. How on Earth had she managed to sneak up on him?

"Is it that bad?" he asked, looked away from the 'Queen' for a second.

"Well, it's not that bad… just… didn't you notice that no one is coming to you for anything?" Alex pointed out.

Ron obviously had not, too focused on keeping an eye on Clover and trying to spot anything that seemed off. If anyone here would be attacked tonight, it would be Clover. "Damn, I messed up…" he moaned quietly, even with all his experience and skill he still had a lot to learn.

"It's not that bad… just a bit off-putting for a server to look so intense. If anything, it makes it easier for me to move…" the ravenette smiled at him.

"Really? How? Won't it make you seem off as well?" the blonde asked, glancing around.

'This way no one will hit on me while you're glaring at them like that' the ravenette thought, smiling sweetly. "Just trust me on this, you're doing great!"

"If you're sure…" Ron glanced away from Alex, it was still hard to look at her after the little incident they'd had on the ride over. He was surprised that she seemed to be fine with it, or maybe she was committed to staying professional while on a mission.

The pair heard a woman cry out, turning to watching the Queen's sister Makeda yelp before falling dramatically right next to Clover. The same handsome man they'd met in the throne room earlier knelt down and helped her up, a concerned look upon his face.

Ron watched with a suspicious expression as Clover escorted them away, not a very queenly task. 'Odd…' he thought before the lights all went out, their shocked guests panicking.

Both Sam and the real queen approached them in a hurry. "It might be the kidnappers!" the redheaded spy hissed quietly, shooting Alex a pointed look.

"Right! This way…" Alex pulled and pushed Tassara towards a far part of the room with a few large carpets that she could hide behind.

Sam quickly produced one of the gadgets they'd gotten from Jerry, a pair of slender pink sunglasses. She started examining the many guests, searching for anyone holding a weapon or that simply looked suspicious.

"Can you see anything?" Ron asked, even as he scanned the area himself.

"No…" Sam pulled the glasses off. "But I can smell something!" she shouted, rushing off with Alex in tow.

Ron stayed behind and continued looking around, those two could handle themselves for a moment. He kept glancing to where the real queen was before he heard a loud scream pierce the darkness, the lights switched back on. Ron turned around to spot two armed men in cloaks, running off with Clover in their arms.

The many guests started screaming in fear, Ron quickly chasing after the disguised men. He ended up cornering them, Alex and Sam joining in.

"Let her go!" Sam demanded.

"HA! Yeah, sure!" one of them agreed. Suddenly, a green ray of light shot down from a window above the masked men and engulfed them. Almost instantly they started to hover, then float up towards the window.

Ron was shocked, freezing briefly before spurring himself to move (mirroring Sam's own reactions). He rushed forward to grasp the cloak of one of the attackers before falling down to the floor and looking up.

The redheaded spy appeared to have the same luck as him, only grabbing a piece of fabric that ripped free before tumbling away. Ron caught Sam, preventing her from hitting the floor. He glared at the two kidnappers, now outside the window and disappearing into the sky.

"Damn it! They got away…" Ron hissed, redirecting his attention towards the girl in his arms. "You okay?"

Sam glanced up at his face before turning away. "Yeah, I'm fine… could you please put me down?" she asked, her embarrassment obvious.

"Right, sorry…" he agreed, quickly setting her down.

"You don't have to-" the redheaded spy started to assure, cutting off upon noticing Alex staring at them. "What?"

"Nothing…" a pouting Alex muttered.

Queen Tassara left her hiding spot, examining both Ron and Sam. "Are you two alright?"

"Yeah… wish we could say the same for Clover…"

"Don't worry, we'll get her back…" Ron vowed.

The handsome man from before had returned, now looking panicked and in shock. "Makeda has been taken too!" he informed the group.

The last notes of music had already faded, the once vibrant ballroom full of diplomats and dignitaries now silent. The party was clearly over, it was inevitable considering "the Queen" had just been abducted. However, for the remainder of the team, the real work was just beginning.

The evacuation had been swift and not very professional. But it was understandable, something had gone seriously wrong, their teammate Clover was now missing.

Now, hours later, the ballroom was empty except for three spies and the Queen who was still with them. Sam- with her sharp, calculating eyes- was busy inspecting the marble floor. Her fingers traced along an odd-looking green powder, the same kind they'd found in the Tassara's room. "No doubt about it… this is the same stuff we saw in the Queen's room" Sam declared, opening her Compowder to call their boss.

Jerry answered instantly, sitting in his chair and sipping tea with a cookie in his hand. "Good evening spies, how's the mission going?" the man asked elegantly.

"This place is beautiful!" Alex answered, smiling widely, before noticing the pointed look Sam was giving her. "I mean, except for the part where Clover and the Queen's sister got taken…"

Jerry dropped the treat he was holding, looking alarmed. "Oh dear…"

"Yeah, there was something strange about the way they got away too… Like they simply got abducted by aliens who beamed them off…" Ron added.

"Oh, like that old tv show! Yeah, I watched it all the time too!" Alex suddenly added, sidling closer to Ron with her hands behind her back. "Maybe after the mission we could try-"

"Alex, how about we find Clover before you make any plans, okay?" Sam demanded, before focusing back on Jerry. "Did you happen to check the sample I sent you?"

"Right! Well, we've analyzed the powder and found out it's a magnetic compound found in asteroids from outer space…" the old spy explained.

Ron was stuck inside his own thoughts. Despite having added that line about aliens as joke, it'd really started to seem not as much of a stretch.

"Hmm…" Tassara hummed, the spies turning to look at her. "I wonder if it has anything to do with the asteroid crater on the northern side of our country…" she mused.

Sam gave both Ron and Alex a pointed look. "I guess we'll find out when we get there…"

The spies were about to head out when the Queen darted into their path, stopping them. "Wait! I'm going with you!"

"I'm not sure that's a good idea-" Ron replied, glancing at Sam and Alex for help.

"Please! I need to find Makeda, I feel responsible!" Tassara pleaded.

Ron turned towards his two teammates, Sam was the first to speak up. "Well… I don't think it's safe for you to come with us…" the redheaded reasoned.

"And you think it's safe here?" the Queen challenged, pointing at the Palace… where she'd been literally almost kidnapped more than once.

The three spies glanced at one another before sighing in response. "Yeah… she has point…" Alex agreed.

X-=-=-=-X

After informing Jerry of their new course of action, he'd also agreed with taking Tassara with them- as long as she remained in disguise. He also sent a WHOOP vehicle that could get them to the impact crater, slashing the time it would take the quartet to cross the desert.

They all appreciated it, even if Ron was still a bit apprehensive about being stuck in a cramped space with both of his teammates. Not to mention the Queen herself… he didn't want to think what could happen if he did something untoward to her by accident.

"Haa…" Alex moaned in relief, body slack and leaning back, her legs spread in a very suggestive manner. "You know, the desert's not so bad when you don't have to cross it on a stinking camel…" she remarked, staring at Tassara. "Are you sure you don't want to have a seat?" she asked, looking back at him.

Ron instantly turned his head away from Alex, hoping she hadn't caught him staring. "I'm fine…" he could feel her gaze upon him.

"Are you sure? We still have a long drive ahead of us…" a sly smile could be heard in her tone.

'She definitely noticed…'

"Alex, leave it be… he said he's okay…" the redhead who was busy driving growled, pointedly tying to ignore her friend's antics. 'She's worse than Clover…'

"Hey, I'm just trying to be a good teammate and help out…" Alex smiled at Ron, as if inviting him over.

The only issue was that the Rugged All-Terrain Vehicle And Tunneler was (once again!) only a three-seater. Sam was in the driver seat, next to her was Queen Tassara, the last seat was taken by Alex.

"Yeah, I'm sure…" Sam replied, sounding skeptical. "Also, there seems to be a sandstorm coming our way, you might want to hold on" the redhead warned.

"Why? It's just a sandstorm… it's not like we're outside" Ron reasoned. After all, they were currently inside of a heavy, tank-like drill.

The vehicle started to shake violently, much more than seemed possible. So much so that the girls, who were strapped in, started yelling.

Ron was less lucky, barely able to prevent himself from falling to the floor.

"Hold on!" Sam yelled, pressing some buttons. A loud, piercing sound could be heard before their vehicle suddenly tilted forward and started its descent. While the girls leaned in Ron flew forward, unable to get ahold of anything in time.

"Ooof! Ah… man…" he groaned, despite the fact that he hadn't really gotten hit by anything. The vehicle now having levelled off, the blonde opened his eyes to stare into the pretty hazel orbs of a certain queen.

"Oh my…" Tassara breathed as she stared down at the blonde, one of her palms cupping her face.

"Y-Your Highness, I-" what was Ron supposed to say? Sorry I fell on your chest and legs? And why was he still there?

"I'm not really supposed to be this close to any man… unless they are suitors that I have accepted…" She smiled at him before petting his hair. "But, you know-" Tassara started to remark, cutting off as Ron was yanked out of the Queen's grip (and lap).

"Wha-what? Alex?" the disguised blonde yelped, the boy having been pulled towards the yellow-clad spy.

She glared at the Queen with an annoyed pout, clutching her male teammate close to her body.

"Alex, I think I can stand back up now… mind letting me go?" Ron ignored the feeling of her curvy body pressed up against him for the second time today.

"I don't know New Guy… I'm starting to think you're doing it on purpose…" Sam interjected, more than a little amused. "It did happen more than once…"

The young Stoppable groaned in annoyance, "…you can just shut up."

X-=-=-=-=-X

The sun had already started setting when they arrived at the crash site. Now the team of three spies stood at the edge of said spot.

They had expected the area to just be another part of the desert, complete with endless dunes and sand with few landmarks. Instead of a wasteland a wall of green rose improbably, a massive jungle.

It was a lush, vibrant, utterly impossible ecosystem blooming in the middle of a desert landscape. Towering trees and dense undergrowth cloaked the ground, teeming with unfamiliar flora.

Ron was amazed, he'd heard about oases in the desert… but this was something else! He would've liked to explore a bit but being on a mission took priority, especially with Clover missing.

Both his fellow spies had donned their motion detector sunglasses once more and were scanning the area, searching for any sort of clue. It was a bit alarming that they still had no idea where their final member was, but with both Alex and Sam calm and collected they must surely be confident their friend was fine.

"Hey! I see something moving!" Sam suddenly shouted, darting off.

"What? Where?" Alex glanced around, not finding anything.

"It was right here! Maybe it's the kidnappers!" Sam argued, moving closer and clearing some heavy foliage out of the way. The redheaded girl had just moved a large leaf, her vison now completely filled with a glowing red. There was a low growl and hot, stinking breath hitting her face.

Sam pushed up her glasses to identify the large animal staring down at her, a huge face with long whiskers. Large teeth were revealed as a mouth opened and a loud roar followed. It was a lion… several of them! She screeched in fear, backing away in a hurry. Sam could deal with villains armed with weapons, but animals were a different story.

Sam, Alex, and Queen Tassara started slowly backing away as several lions closed in on them with rather obvious intentions.

The trio of ladies were all about to turn tail and run when their male teammate walked right past them, straight towards the ferocious animals. "New Guy?! What are you…" Sam shouted, clearly panicked by his (seemingly) reckless course of action.

Ron stood right in front of three lions moving in for the kill.

"LOOK OUT!" both Alex and Sam screamed, before they felt a sudden pressure.

The lions all froze, standing completely still. Ron lifted his hand into the air before pointing at the ground. "Sit!" he called out- not yelling, but commanding. The lions all sat down as the boy walked towards them, Ron petting the closest to the women. "Good… you're not scary, are you?" he soothed, the other two lions approaching Ron so he could pet them as well.

The three girls could only stare at this scene in shock before Sam snapped out of it first, sighing heavily. "Of course he can magically tame wild animals… what was I thinking?"

"Can I pet them too?" Alex asked, approaching with no fear whatsoever.

"I'm not sure he did anything magical…" Queen Tassara declared. "Some people just have a sort of authority over animals… They can recognize anyone stronger, or a predator much more dangerous than them…" The Queen stared at the disguised blonde with a great deal of interest.

'Great… I guess that's yet another thing I need to ask him about…' Sam mused, watching as Tassara joined the other two in their little petting session.

X-=-=-=-X

The team had left the small jungle biome to discover what appeared to be a rundown camp. It was built inside the ruined remains of a civilization at least a few hundred years old. Or perhaps it only looked like that due to the harsh, unforgiving conditions of the desert.

Sam was busy leading their group, Alex right behind her. Following after them was their only male member, who was currently carrying the Queen upon his back. Apparently, her queenly highness didn't have the constitution necessary for long walks.

Sam tried to focus on the mission as she spotted something familiar on the ground, she crouched down to inspect traces of green dust. "This is the same stuff we found in the Queen's room…" she looked to her companions and pointed at the rest of the ruins.

Ron nodded and they walked inside, the boy still carrying Queen Tassara.

The yellow-clad spy glanced at the Queen before pouting and stomping ahead. Alex was looking around, desperate to find a clue before annoyance got the better of her. She sighed heavily, sitting down on top of a large crate. "I don't think we'll find anything here… this place looks like it hasn't been used in a hundred years- AH!" Alex squealed, the crate she'd been sitting on having broken under her weight.

"Oof… huh?" She looked under her to see a pair of tied up legs, Alex shot up and recognized their blonde teammate who had vanished. "Clover!" she shouted in relief.

"Have you seen Makeda?" Sam asked.

"Umm, I'm fine by the way…" the boy-crazed spy answered in an annoyed tone. "And no, I haven't seen Makeda, I haven't seen anything outside of this box!" The blonde girl stared up at the hand being offered to her.

"You okay?" Ron asked as he pulled her up, having already untied her bindings. "We were worried about you…"

"Nice try New Guy, but you're still not hot enough to date me!" Clover joked, smiling as she grabbed his hand and shot him a wink.

'Yep, she's fine…' all three of her teammates thought at the same time.

Suddenly a voice came from behind all of them, "…I'm right here." They all turned to see Queen Tassara's sister, Makeda, simply standing there smiling.

Ron stared at the girl suspiciously. 'Why was she just walking around? And looking so calm about it too…' Before he was able to voice his concerns, the Queen was pushed back by her sister as a man armed with a strange looking gun aimed at all of them.

"Now to take care of you…" as soon as she'd said that the man smiled and pulled the trigger.

Ron didn't have time to think, rushing forward to try and stand between that gun and the girls. Fortunately, instead of bullets a glowing green ray hit them all, the group floating up into the air.

The young Stoppable cursed as he floated uselessly in place with the rest of his team. Tassara's sister confessed that SHE was behind the kidnapping attempts; that when she delivered her sister's country's weapons research to a warlord of their enemy nation, she would become the queen of both countries.

Ron wasn't sure why Makeda thought she would get anything in return, not after having proven that she wasn't even above betraying her own family. His thoughts then turned to worry as they were placed next to a bomb primed to detonate in only a few minutes.

Makeda laughed wildly as she walked away with her henchman, leaving her sister to perish.

"How are we supposed to get out of this?!" Clover asked.

"We have to break this gravity field somehow" Sam answered, attempting to move but with little success.

"Let me try something…" Ron declared, but all he managed to do was flail around in place. He looked at the girls once more. "Maybe I can try to throw you out of it?" he offered.

"Do it if you think you can" Clover urged, giving him her hand before the others could. Ron pulled her close to his side, then hurled her clear of the field. The blonde girl landed hard on her ass, getting up and dusting herself off. "A little warning next time! I'd like my butt the stay in the same-" the blonde spy shut up mid-complaint, rushing over to the gravity gun and hurriedly turning it off.

The three spies and one queen who'd still been floating fell as gravity reasserted itself upon them, dropping the group in one second flat.

"Oh… my head…" Sam gritted her teeth as she looked at her teammates. Alex had landed on her butt, their new member having cushioned Tassara's fall with his body. The redheaded spy was about to say something when Clover called out to them.

"No time! We need to run before that explodes!" the blonde spy warned, pointing as the bomb.

Not needing another remainder, the group rushed out of the ruins close enough to feel the heat of an explosion on their backs.

"Wow, that was too close… Good job, Clover!" Sam praised, cleaning herself off and making sure she was still in one piece.

"How are we supposed to find them now?" Ron pointed out. Even if they had succeeded in keeping the Queen safe, they still needed to stop her sister.

"I know where she's going… I know where the factory is!" Tassara chimed in with a gasp.

"Great!" Alex chirped quickly. "So, we'll drop you off back at the Palace and-"

"I'm coming with you! She is my sister and I need to confront her!" the Queen's insisted, her resolve absolute. The girls were about to recklessly agree when Ron spoke up.

"I get that you want to talk to your sister about this, but if something were to happen to you it wouldn't matter that we stopped them… You can talk to her, and get the answers you deserve, after we've made sure it's safe… for the good of your country" the blonde reasoned. Tassara seemed conflicted, her resolve wavering.

X-=-=-=-=-X

Deep in the mountains, the spies arrived at a secret weapons lab the Queen had told them about. It looked like a large observatory, with a huge satellite dish on top of it. Guards in matching uniforms were busy patrolling carrying unknown guns, they looked both futuristic and extremely dangerous.

They did not need to be immobilized by another one of those gravity guns, that was a one-way ticket to being captured- or worse.

"So, what's the plan?" Ron asked, wanting to see what the girls thought.

"Well…" Clover drawled, "I don't know about calling it a plan… but we're really on borrowed time" the red-clad spy pointed out.

"Yeah, we need to stop them before they finish whatever it is they've got going on!" Alex added.

"I've got Jerry on the way over, we just need to keep them busy until WHOOP gets here…" Sam explained.

"So all we need to do is make a mess?" Ron asked, grinning widely.

The three girls stared at his mischievous expression. Sam was worried, Clover seemed amused, and Alex looked… odd.

"What did you have in mind?" Clover asked, realizing that both Sam and Alex had a few different things in mind.

"Let's just say I have some experience in messing up plans…" he glanced at them. "How are you girls with distractions?"

X-=-=-=-X

The team had finally returned, having successfully completed their mission. The girls all complained about how they hated any missions they had to do in the desert, mostly because of all the sand…

Ron had split off from the girls, returning to school the next day. He still wasn't sure why he didn't just come out and reveal his identity to the rest of them. At this point if they had any more missions that took longer than a few days, it wouldn't take much for them to put two and two together… especially if they happened to ask Mandy if he'd been with her.

He'd arrived at school to see the place looking like a school play, there was a marching band as well as a few cheerleaders with the letter C plastered on their uniforms. Many posters and banners were hung, 'vote for Clover' written on them, music playing, and even a huge hot air balloon with Clover's name plastered on it.

"What the hell?" the blonde asked, glancing around in confusion.

"Yeah… I'd say it's more annoying than anything…" a familiar girl griped.

Ron turned, watching Donna walk up to stand next to him. "Morning Donna, you know what this whole thing is about?" he asked, gesturing at the odd scene.

The girl scoffed and looked annoyed. "Yeah, I do… I'm guessing that your old school didn't have this kind of Homecoming Queen nonsense?" the punk girl asked.

"This is what they do here?!" Ron asked, amazement clear in his voice, the girl laughed.

"Ha! So, you're not one of those weirdos… I knew there was a reason I liked you!" she declared loudly, slapping Ron's back and grinning.

"Glad to hear it… but seriously, is this normal?" the blonde boy asked.

"Yes and no… depends on who's running…" Donna shrugged.

He noticed that Mandy and the spies were all standing in one of the halls, talking to one another. There was also a blonde boy with glasses who pointed all around them, then at himself. He smiled at Clover and crept close to her, freezing when she put her palm up between them.

Clover didn't look angry at his attempt, but they were definitely talking about something.

'So, that's Arnold…' Ron's gaze turned dark and he stalked off. "I'll talk to you later Donna, there's something I need to do…"

Donna watched as the new guy approached the group. 'GOD, HE'S SO HOT! I'M SO GLAD I CAME BACK!' the punk girl squealed silently.
