Chapter 1: Bessie Milligan

In the town of Royal Woods, Michigan there lived the Milligan family. They were a happy family of three, that consisted of Leon, Brittany, and their daughter Bessie. At first glance, they seemed like an average everyday family.

But they weren't that average. Starting with their family pet, Baxter. By the name, you'd think he was a dog, but no Baxter was a pig. Also their 12-year-old daughter Bessie, was in a wheelchair, but she wasn't born with a condition that prevented her from walking.

It was started when Bessie was 9-years-old. She was walking across the street, when she was struck by a car. She was immediately, taken to the hospital and had emergency surgery. Afterwards, Bessie wasn't the same.

Due to an injury to her spine Bessie could no longer fully walk. She now had to use a wheelchair full time, and learn how to live a different way. Along with that, she had to live in a special center for disabled kids called Growing Lives Rehab Center, because her parents were going to be busy trying make enough money to buy a new house for them.

But through it all, Bessie remained resilient and hopeful. She was kind to others, tried to look on the brighter side of things, and always tried to smile. Bessie brought Baxter with her to the center, and even made some new friends at the center and at school.

Eventually, Leon and Brittany found new good jobs and managed to make enough money to buy a wheelchair friendly house. Bessie and Baxter then moved out of Growing Lives, and went back to live with her family.

And even though so much had changed, they were back together as a family.

One morning, Bessie was sound asleep when she was woken up by her alarm clock. Her eyes shot opened, and she reached over and turned it off. She then sat up in bed, and rubbed the sleep out of her eyes.

She then, pulled over her wheelchair over to her, and got in it. She wheeled herself out of her room, she ran into her mom. "Good morning, Mom." she greeted.

"Good morning, Bessie. Need help in the bathroom?" asked Brittany.

"Nope, I've got it."

And with that, Bessie wheeled herself to the bathroom. She used the toilet, brushed her teeth, washed her face, and then left to get dressed. She put on her teal sleeveless shirt, blue jeans, and her black and white sneakers.

Then she wheeled herself over to her vanity and started doing her hair. She put her curly black hair in a ponytail, and then put on her silver earrings and matching teal headband. When she was finished, she looked at herself in the mirror.

Her brown skin was shiny, and her black ponytail looked great.

"Looking good, Bessie." she told herself.

"Bessie, breakfast time." called her dad.

"Coming."

And she wheeled herself to the kitchen.

In the kitchen, Brittany was fixing up breakfast and Leon was getting his stuff ready for work.

"Morning, Dad." Bessie greeted.

"Hey, sweetheart. Sleep well?" asked Leon.

"Yep. What's for breakfast?"

"I made pancakes." Brittany told.

Then they heard the sound of snorting and saw Baxter coming in through the little dog door, or pig door as they liked to call it.

"Hey, Baxter boy." Bessie said happily.

Baxter trotted over to Bessie, and she patted his head.

"Want a pancake?"

Baxter snorted excitedly. With that, she took a pancake off her plate and gave it to him. After eating breakfast, it was time for Bessie to get going to school. She got her backpack, and then wheeled herself outside to her dad's car.

After helping her in, Leon got in the driver's seat and drove off.

When they got to Royal Woods Middle School, Leon helped his daughter back into her chair and then said goodbye to her.

"Bye, Dad." Bessie called, as he drove off.

Then she saw her friends, Lincoln, Clyde, Liam, Stella, Rusty, and Zack.

"Hi, guys." she greeted, wheeling up to them.

"Hey, Bessie." Lincoln greeted back, and the others greeted her back.

They talked for a while, and then the bell rang. They all went inside, and to their lockers. After getting her books, Bessie wheeled herself to her first period classroom. School went on normally, and then came lunchtime.

Bessie was in line to get her food, when suddenly someone cut in front of her. It was Taylor, an 8th grader.

"Hey!" Bessie protested.

"You got something to say, wheelchair girl?"

Bessie was about to stand up for herself when a lunch lady broke in. It was Lunch Lady Pat.

"Hey, back of the line missy." she instructed in a stern voice.

Taylor grumbled, and went to the back of the line.

"You okay, kid?" Lunch Lady Pat asked.

"Yeah, thanks."

Bessie then got her food, and wheeled herself to her table. As she ate with her friends, they began talking about their upcoming summer vacation.

"I'm gonna spend a couple weeks with my grandma in our old town." Stella told.

"We're going to hit the lake." piped up Liam.

"What about you, Bessie?" asked Clyde.

"I don't know yet. But I hope it's something fun." she replied.

Once school was over, Bessie wheeled herself outside, and waited.

"Hey, Bessie aren't you going home?" Lincoln asked, as he walked outside.

"No, I'm going to Growing Lives." she replied.

"But you live with your parents now."

"I know, but I'm going to see my old friends."

While Bessie was now part of Lincoln's crew, she did have a couple of friends that she made at Growing Lives. Suddenly, she was slightly shoved. This time it was Chandler.

"Hey watch where you'd going Wheelchair Girl." he threatened.

Bessie and Lincoln scowled at him.

"Man that guy is a jerk." Lincoln sneered.

"You got that right." Bessie agreed.

Then she saw the Growing Rehab's van and the driver, Mr. Stern.

"There's my ride. See you, Lincoln."

"Bye, Bessie."

And she wheeled herself to the van.

"Hi, Mr. Stern." Bessie greeted.

"Hey Bessie, great to see you again."

He helped her into the van, and then they drove off.

After driving for a while, they arrived at the building. When Bessie got out of the van, she felt a wave of nostalgia.

"(Sighs), I remember this place."

She and Mr. Stern went inside, and saw Ms. Goldsteen at her desk.

"Hi, Bessie." she greeted happily.

"Hi, Ms. Goldsteen. Where's Saskia and Victor?"

"They're in the recreation room."

With that, Bessie wheeled herself to the other room. She looked around, and saw two kids waving over to her.

"Hi guys." she greeted.

Saskia was a 12-year-old girl with light skin, green eyes, and blonde hair in tow pigtails. And she wore an orange shirt, brown skirt, and brown shoes. She was at Growing Lives because she had Tourette Syndrome.

Victor was an 11-year-old boy with tan skin, brown eyes, and short dark brown hair. His clothes were a green and blue shirt, jeans, and black shoes. He was at Growing Lives because he had autism.

"There you are, Bessie. We were getting worried." Victor said.

"Sorry, Victor. But I'm here now."

"H-h-how's it going?" Saskia asked her.

"Great, you guys ready to hang out?"

"Yes we are."

And with that, they started their time together. They played some games, had snacks, and watched some TV. Then at 5:00, Victor spoke up.

"Well I have to get started on my homework."

"All right, bye Victor." Bessie told him.

And with that, he went upstairs with another worker.

"You know how Victor gets." Saskia replied.

"Yeah, my parents will be here soon anyway." Bessie said.

"So will mine."

Then Ms. Goldsteen stepped into the room.

"Bessie, your dad is here and Saskia your mom is here."

"Okay." the girls replied.

They went outside, and went with their respective parent.

That evening, after dinner Bessie spent the rest of her time watching TV with Baxter.

"I just love watching this show, don't you Baxter?" Baxter squealed.

"Do you have any homework, Bessie?" asked Brittany.

"Not really, Mom. With school almost over there's not much have that."

"Oh that's right. Sometimes I get so busy I forget how much time goes by."

And with that, she walked off.

"(Chuckles), parents."

Baxter squealed in agreement. When it was time for bed, Bessie changed into her pajamas. As she lied in bed, she couldn't help but think about the harsh words the other kids said to her. While she knew she shouldn't let her wheelchair hold her back or get her down.

But there were times where she couldn't help but wish people didn't just view as "the girl in the wheelchair".
