Smurfocalypse chapter 113: Brainy's Redemtion. From nerd to Genius.
Somewhere in between this fateful night and the day that Hefty and his forces departed Port Saint Smurf a crisis befell the portside Smurf village that could have sent everything they fought and died crashing into ruin and chaos. There was only one Smurf who could find out what to do, and that Smurf was Brainy. The following tale was documented in the Big Book of Smurfs upon several influential community members confirming it as fact. This is the story of how Brainy finally went from being underappreciated and having few if any real friends to being considered a hero and earning genuine respect.
It was a normal summer day in Port Saint Smurf. There were many new faces amongst the crowd of hard workers going about their day. Sprinkled in between are the Smurfs we've grown to love. Port Saint Smurf has doubled in population and now was home to literally all walks of life. Smurfs under Hefty's care shared quality time with their babies, the baby dropped off at Psychiatrist and Secretary's hut was included in that rotation. Coconut raised Elias as usual while working hard only to spend her evenings with Pluto as she listened in awe as Pluto happily told her stories of life on Kepler and what it was like to be in outer space. Coconut would share her experiences as a tribesmurf in her native land. Pluto would play around in the morning with some of the other Smurflings and then only after she had her breakfast would she go to doctor's clinic. There she would do small tasks for doctor such as fetch him certain supplies, or sometimes get water or ice. She would be present for every incident involving patients, and would watch as Doctor treated his patients and learn from watching. Sometimes Doctor would explain in detail as he is doing it while she watched. Doctor always had patients unfortunately. Construction work is dangerous especially in the year 646 and even more so when you're three apples tall. The workers get roughed up a bit, but nothing serious happened. The Smurf girls of Smurfy Grove integrated quickly and stopped calling themselves "Smurf" before their names even when talking amongst each other. Mango and Mouse eventually formed a relationship and she would join him at work as he mentored her in his craft.
Brainy has begun taking on more of Papa Smurf's interests and began studying magic in his spare time. The more he studied the more he noticed he was becoming more capable with more successful attempts, and he also noticed a different feeling. His magic potential was granting him even more power. This power gave him confidence and this confidence would aid him in following through with the idea that would save Port Saint Smurf.
Today was very strange. The crabs had disappeared seemingly overnight. Brainy assembled Hefty's council and was discussing what might be wrong when they are interrupted by Harmony bursting through the unlocked door.
"Brainy… The crabs are in the food." Harmony said trying not to panic.
There was a collective gasp amongst the council. They all stared at Harmony in horror Grandpa included. Finally Brainy calmly speaks up.
"Does any other Smurf know?" Brainy asked.
"Not that I know of, but the crabs aren't in the streets anymore some Smurf will eventually put two and two together." Harmony said.
"What are we going to do? We need that food." Psychiatrist said.
"Our population has doubled in size. We'll have plenty of Smurfberries this fall but we can't live off Smurfberries the whole winter. Farmer didn't plant enough and it's too late to plant more." Alchemist said.
"If we don't stop this now… Right now… Then Hefty and the others won't have a home to come back to." Doctor said.
Brainy knew of a way to fix this problem swiftly just like Papa Smurf would, it was an easy solution with instant results. However he felt like he'd have to convince others to actually allow him to do it.
"We don't have much time. Harmony tell Dew and the other knights to assemble the village. We need to address this issue and show the others we're capable enough to have discovered the problem first and let them know we're working on it." Brainy said.
Harmony nods and rushes out of Papa Smurf's hut to do his job.
"What are you going to do?" Grandpa asked.
"I have a spell that will solve all of this." Brainy said.
"Brainy no! One false move and you could destroy the entire storage silo." Doctor said.
"If you somehow blow up the food the village will descend into chaos." Psychiatrist said.
The council collectively frowned upon the idea of trusting Brainy to solve the problem using magic, but since practicing magic and becoming so influential parts of Brainy have changed. Before he may become discouraged, he may have been silenced by being thrown out of the village like in the old days but not anymore. Brainy was one hundred percent sure of his place in the world now. Brainy doesn't respond to their negative feedback and stands with Papa Smurf's magic tome in his hand.
"We don't have time to waste." Brainy said as he left the hut.
The council was silent afterward. By the time Brainy made it outside Dew and the Grove Knights had already assembled the village. Everyone was standing there talking amongst each other about what might be going on. Brainy boldly addresses the crowd. Standing by his side was Dew and there were other knights stationed around the crowd ready for whatever might be happening. The crowd was silent once Brainy arrived.
"Attention my fellow Smurfs! The council has learned of unsettling news." Brainy begins.
The crowd begins to murmur looks of concern being expressed throughout.
"The crabs have made it into the food." Brainy said.
There was a collective gasp amongst the crowd. Some Smurfs stared in shock with their mouths agape. Others began to murmur amongst themselves, and some Smurfs looked like they were entering a state of panic.
"Oh no…" Coconut said with fear her voice just barely above a whisper. She holds Elaes closer for comfort.
She felt a hand on her shoulder and turned to find Mango, Mouse, and Duck were standing behind her.
"It'll be ok. He'll figure something out." Mango said softly.
Mouse was next to him and was visibly scared. He put an arm around her to comfort her. If something happened to Port Saint Smurf he'd keep the ones close to him alive the best he could. Dreamy gave him a new life and he wasn't going to let go of it ever.
"I thought this place would be safe. I moved my whole family here all the way from Sweden!" A random Smurf from the crowd shouts with the appropriate accent.
"No Smurf panic! I, Brainy Smurf have a solution to the problem!" Brainy said.
Once the crowd calmed down again Brainy elaborated.
"I have a spell that can send the crabs peacefully back to the ocean!" Brainy said.
"Brainy no!" A voice shouted from the crowd.
Everyone was silent as a Smurfette struggled to get through the crowd to Brainy. Finally out of the crowd came a Smurfette dressed in grey mage's robes matching gloves and a black witch hat. She had shoulder length natural blue hair and thick glasses with black frames. She stared him in the eyes with her blue eyes.
"Magica…" Brainy said.
"That spell is to high level Brainy! We've never done anything like that before! What if you blow up the entire silo!?" Magica said. She spoke with a Swedish accent that pretty much reflected her origin.
The village then becomes noticeably more scared and upset at the idea of the food blowing up.
"I know that look in your eyes. I've seen it before in the short time we've known each other a lot of times. Your going to do it anyway…" Magica said in realization.
Brainy continues to look at her his expression unwavering.
"Let me help. We can do it together." Magica said.
"Out of the question." Brainy said.
"Why? What something horrible happens and someone hurts you?" Magica asked.
"Magica… That's why I have to do it alone." Brainy said.
"Brainy…" Magica said.
"You're the best thing to happen to my life since my friends died… If something went wrong and you got hurt I could never live with myself." Brainy said as he walked away.
The crowd continues to get unruly, and Dew steps up.
"Order! I will have order!" Dew commands.
The village quiets down.
"The council has made their decision. Return to work." Dew said.
The village departed and Smurf and Smurfette's returned to work as the Smurflings did whatever.
"What will we do without any food?" Coconut asked looking to Mango.
"Don't worry about it… We're not going to lose our food." Mango said.
"Papa Smurf has given me the power to save everyone… I'm not going to let the village we all fought and died for collapse." Brainy thought as he made his way towards the food silo tightly gripping his magic tome.
He makes his way to silo and stand in front of it opening the door only see an infuriating sight. Crabs were all over every bit of food they owned visibly eating it. With of a look of determination Brainy opens the magic tome and takes the gamble of a lifetime. He outstretches his right arm visible magic glowing from his hands.
"Repellious!" Brainy shouts.
A bolt of magic hits the dirt floor of the silo and sparks much to the horror of the spectators that decided to watch. Brainy's expression becomes more frustrated and he tries again.
"Repellious!" Brainy shouts again.
The same result occurs, but more dangerous as Brainy was using more of his power. The last blast nearly caught the silo on fire, but the flame died out in the dirt floor. Magic takes a deep breath and with all his strength tries a third time.
"REPELLIOUS!" Brainy shouts.
This time the bolt hits the dirt floor of the silo and begins smoking. A magical fog envelops the silo and out of that thick fog came the crabs. They scurried out and started making their way towards the ocean. Brainy followed after them and continued to cast the spell causing them to speed up. The crowd of spectators cheer and clap as Brainy chases the threat out of the village and into the ocean. The food was saved, Port Saint Smurf was saved.
Word of Brainy's achievement spread like wild fire across the village. Smurfs that knew him before the apocalypse were in complete shock and were beyond impressed. In the days following Brainy would become a lot more popular and Smurfs started taking his advice more often, listening to his lectures, and even some were starting to read his books. Brainy would order a fence to be put up along the beach in such a way that crabs could pass it or burrow under it putting an end to their problem for the foreseeable future.
