(AN: Merry Christmas all! I hope you're enjoying yours, and here's my present to everyone! Even if it's belated. Anyhow, no questions were asked from the last chapter, so let's get into the story!)

"One more job." Naruto nodded to himself. He didn't think the one outside of the village would be worth it. Getting around the ANBU would be trouble enough, but this last one would be simple. "So long as no one's visiting the park this late at night."

Chances for that were slim, but you never knew what someone could be up to at night.

Still, that was a good distance away from his position, so he'd need to hoof it, and fast.

"If only I was as fast as that kid." Well, he did have that wind jutsu now, and with 37 DEX, it increased him to 41! Soon he'd be faster than Lee and that Neji kid. Now just need his strength leveled up. His INT and WIS weren't important. Definitely not.

Probably.

By the time he made it to the park, Naruto's new jutsu had leveled up two more times. It seemed to have a low ceiling for exp, which was nice. Plus, he got a free level in his DEX. So now, with the jutsu active, he could go all the way up to 43!

"Wow." Naruto couldn't help but mutter as he starred up at the large oak that filled the center of the Shodaime's park. Getting in after hours had been easy, but even after all these years, Naruto had never actually entered the park.

"They always turned me away."

The tree was split down the middle in color, half being a dark, almost black color, while the other was a much lighter brown, more like a birch tree than an oak. Near the bottom, however, the colors merged into a swirling mirage. It was mesmerizing.

Before the tree sat a sign that read.

When two opposing ideals intertwine, true understanding shall be brought forth into the world.

—Hashirama Senju.

Naruto had to shake himself out of his stupor in order to step around the sign. Still, he couldn't help but contemplate the words. "It's like mixing salt and sugar, I guess." They were opposites, but tasted great together… Maybe.

He walked up to the colorful tear behind the sign and reached an arm out to it. "What's the game this time, System? Another obstacle course?"

[Survive.]

"Excuse me?"

Before he could turn away, Naruto's body began to dissolve into a multitude of colors once more, and he slowly entered the tear in space.

Nearby, an ANBU on his lunch (Midnight) break slowly rubbed his eyes and stared at the empty spot where he was sure a blond kid once was. "I gotta tell Dragon to stop forcing me on these doubles so much. Kids turning into colors is not something I signed up to watch."

When Naruto felt his feet hit the ground, he immediately stumbled and fell to his knees onto what had to be the softest grass he had ever felt.

After forcing himself back to his feet, he looked around his newest discovery in wonder. He stood high on what had to be the top of a mountain. Below him swam an ocean of clouds that parted just enough for the top to poke through. Even this high up, strange looking birds flew through the air, diving in and out of the clouds. The ground below him was gorgeous, the grass was greener than any he had ever seen, and just before him stood a lone sakura tree that bathed a single person in its red, pink, and white blossoms. Its bark was pitch black and stood out amongst the sea of white. Naruto hadn't even known they could grow like that.

The whole scene was breathtaking.

The figure under the tree turned, and slowly they rose, revealing a tall, imposing woman dressed in what looked like monk robes and holding a jingling, golden shakujō that glistened in the sun's rays.

"Who?" Her voice was hoarse, as if it was the first time she had spoken in a long while.

"Uh? Hello?"

The wind moved and suddenly she was before him, pressing her shakujō's bottom into his shoulder. Naruto stepped back from the force, but she continued.

"How did you get here?"

"A game sent me?" Would the woman even believe that? Would she even know what that meant? "Hey, I got sucked into a tree's rift that lead to a hole in space and time, apparently, and now I'm here?"

"I see."

"What?"

"Your words are as loud in your mind as they are from your throat."

"You can read my mind!" Quick brain, don't think about anything important! Like the secret tunnels throughout the village, he used to hide from the chunin that chased him after a prank!

"You're quite bad at this." The woman almost smiled. Almost. "Was this******** doing?"

The word she used was fuzzy.

"Who's?"

[Gamer's Mind has blocked this person's access to your mind.]

"Definitely his. Leave the way you came." The woman turned from him, walking away as if he no longer existed.

"Hey! Who were you talking about!?" He shouted after her.

She paused in her step, and turned back with a raised brow, "*"

"I can't understand you."

She shook her head, and the rings on her staff swayed in the breeze. It sounded calming.

"Leave." But her words didn't help him at all.

"Hey! I'm supposed to find someone!"

"You should leave! Only pain is allowed up here on my hill."

"Hill?" If this was a hill, then he must have been an ant. "I'm looking for… She who Protects?"

"Tell ******** I'm not interested. If he needs something, he can come find me."

"I don't know who that is!"

Still, the woman walked away.

"Oi!"

He tried to observe her, but everything, including her name, was replaced with ?. Except for one stat.

Luck: -21

Ooof. That must be hard. "Wait, am I the bad luck for her today?"

She looked at him like he was an idiot.

"Sorry." He muttered. "Didn't mean to say that out loud."

"You'll find no protection here at the world's end. Seek solace with another.******** Can guide you just as easily. I will not play his games."

"I'm not here for a game!" Wait, that was technically a lie. One that she seemed to have noticed. "Not that type of game, anyway!"

She simply stared at him.

"Maybe we got off on the wrong foot?"

"You invade my place of solace and dare to say we got off on the wrong foot?"

"It wasn't on purpose?"

She raised a brow.

"Ok, maybe a little bit. But not to purposefully invade your space!"

"Leave."

"I'm not sure if I can."

She sighed, almost dramatically, and turned to face him fully once more.

"Why not?"

"I have to complete my quest, I think."

[Or fail.]

"Or fail."

With a roll of her eyes, the woman stalked forward and pushed him onto his backside with her shakujō, which he protested. "Consider this your failure."

[Urgent Quest Unlocked!]

[Impress She Who Protects.]

[Description: Find a way to impress the woman who watches the world from its throat.]

[Rewards: 150 EXP, 2 WIS, 2 INT, 1 C Rank Technique Scroll, 1 Title.]

[Failure: 100 EXP, -2 To Every Stat, Possible Death.]

"Hell no!" The Death part was bad enough. But to lose his hard earned stats! "Wait… maybe this game really is screwing with me."

"Excuse me?"

Thinking quickly, Naruto put on his best charm, and stuck a pose. "My name is Naruto Uzumaki! I'm gonna be Hokage! Or at least, that's what I want to do! What about you!?"

"A fire shadow?" She quirked a brow. "What does that have to do with anything?"

"It's the leader of my village. The strongest and most powerful person in the village! That's what it is!"

She shook her head. "If being the strongest is all it takes to become leader, then your home must be one of war and hatred."

"Eh? Hell no! My village is at peace! In fact, we're the most peaceful of all the Shinobi Villages!"

Snorting, the woman shook her head. "And how many of these leaders has your village had?"

"Four!" Naruto said proudly. "Since our founding almost 80 years ago, we've had only four leaders. In fact, it was our founder that brought an end to the warring clan era!"

"Hm, Shinobi and Clans, it almost brings a sense of nostalgia to me."

"Really?"

"Still, if your leader is the best, then you've got a long, long journey ahead of you, child."

"Well, once I beat the old man and take that hat, I'll have completed that journey. It won't take too long. I'll get stronger and stronger every day."

"So you simply have to beat him for leadership?"

"Uh… no, I think it has to be approved by a majority of the village and the daimyo… but other than that… well…"

"Sounds like there's more to it than simply being the best. Tell me, kid. Is your leader wise? Is he smart? Does he have compassion?"

"Of course! Old man Third is the best!"

"Third? I thought you said there were four."

Naruto grimaced and looked away, "Yeah… there were. Lord Fourth died on my birthday, though. A demon attacked the village. He took it with him to the Shinigami."

"Someone who gives their life for their home certainly sounds like a good leader."

Naruto frowned at the ground, balling his fists. "Yeah… The Hokage is… they should be someone who protects."

"Are you that type of person?"

"I don't know."

"Then leave."

He jerked up as a notification went off.

[Relationship with ? has decreased, -5]

[Relationship has changed from Neutral to Menace.]

"Leave. You're simply wasting your time here."

"But—"

"Leave!" She slammed her shakujō into the ground, causing the grass to ripple across the mountaintop. But Naruto didn't care about the show of strength.

"No! I can't back down from a challenge just because you say I should."

"You'll never be a leader while so weak."

"Then I'll just get stronger."

"For what?"

"To be leader!"

"And why do you want to be a leader?"

"To protect?!"

"You sound so unsure of yourself. It's laughable."

He pointed a finger up at the woman's face, glaring at her with venom. "And who are you to tell me that?!"

"You say you want to become stronger in order to become the leader of your home, a Shadow. And yet your heart wavers as you speak of protecting your people and home. So why not ask yourself this question. Why would you need to become the leader to protect your people?"

"Why?"

"The only thing I ever lead was a pitiful excuse for an army whose sole reason to exist was protecting a single path through the mountains. I protected my men, my home, and friends, all without becoming the leader of them all. I lived and died as a protector, whether I led or not. So tell me, boy. Why do you really want to become a Shadow?"

The kid's voice never wavered when he spoke of becoming Hokage to protect the village. So why did Naruto's?

"I want to become a hero to everyone in need. A leader people can look up to. Someone whose Will of Fire spreads to everyone."

"Are you sure about that?"

A hero protects, a hero was strong. A hero didn't need to be leader, that was for sure, but… it was his dream to become Hokage.

"I am."

[Relationship with ? has increased +4]

But their relationship still hadn't changed.

"Then prove it."

She twirled her shakujō, letting its rings echo over the clouds.

"A leader must be strong. That is true. But they must be wise, intelligent, they must know the answer to their people's worries. Simply being able to lift the mountain does not mean all the answers lie clearly underneath."

"Shoot." A kunai found its way into his hand as he began to spam his clones into existence. "I really gotta get my control leveled up."

"Speed, strength, intelligence, and pure power make up the main ingredients you need. But there's one thing that can always keep someone down."

Naruto swallowed thickly as his clones slowly moved into position, different jutsus on the tips of their tongue.

"A Heart is also needed." She tapped her weapon on the ground and disappeared.

[Bloodlust detected—]

Naruto spun and swung his kunai, catching the larger weapon. Yet he was still pushed back.

"Wind Style:—"

"Water Style:—"

Kunai and shuriken flew fast and true, yet a single swing of her staff knocked them from the air.

"Some Fire shadow you are." She scoffed at his choice of element.

"It's enough to take you out!"

Her glare immediately made him regret that as she went on the offensive.

Even with his increased DEX, he could barely avoid her attacks, and eventually, a swing found its way under his arm and slammed into his ribs.

Hit! 22 Damage.

HP: 27/49

"Gah!" At least one rib had been broken from that. It hurt way worse than when that stupid beetle had skewered him as well.

"Come on! A soft tap like that is nothing!"

His clones went on the offensive as they converged, trying to let their original recuperate.

"I have to think of a new plan, and fast."

Maybe stunning her would work?

She was making quick work of his clones, so thinking intently of his new strategy, he reformed them and quickly began a Taijutsu barrage.

Yet every hit was blocked.

In his frustration, he pulled out a secret item that he had been saving since leaving the hospital.

A Paper Bomb.

Normally Academy Students couldn't buy them, but a quick henge as Iruka-Sensei had canceled out the issue.

The rest of the clones copied his actions, attaching them to their kunai.

All but one leaped backwards, activated their tags, and threw.

The remaining clone's sacrifice would be remembered by all.

A fiery explosion rocked the mountain, and Naruto instantly felt guilt rise in his heart. The woman probably knew a way to block it.

Right?

His worries were useless, it seemed, as the woman simply walked out completely unscathed.

That was five thousand ryo down the drain.

"It seems you want to be serious."

"oh no."

"Oh, yes."

Naruto stepped back and… where had his clones gone?

When had she dispelled them?

She spun her weapon, dispelling the smoke that still wafted around her, and slowly she grasped the shakujō.

"We don't have to be serious if you don't want to!"

There was a soft click that boomed over the mountain as she twisted only the bottom half of her staff. From the bottom of the wood and metal, a hidden blade swung out from the side of the staff, revealing its gleaming state to the world.

He starred in worry.

She swung the shakujō up, and without any time to react, a burst of wind flew past him. It felt gentle, yet filled with fury. Naruto heard a sound from behind him, and he couldn't help but turn. His jaw dropped.

She had split the sky in half.

Far off into the distance was now a gap in the clouds, stretching all the way to the horizon. Looking down, he could just barely make out the ground and ocean that made up the far off land from atop this throne of the world. He tore his eyes from the scene and stared at the woman that faced him.

She gave no reaction, merely staring at him, daring him to continue with his challenge.

While Naruto remained motionless, she twisted her staff, sealing away the blade once more, and then gently walked away.

He couldn't end this here, though. She had been holding back this entire time. Truth be told, it was obvious from the start, but this. This changed everything.

"We're not done yet!" He had never been one to take a warning like that lying down.

"We are."

"I've still got some fight left in me."

"Then you'll die." It was a fact, one which Naruto knew somewhere deep inside. But he wasn't called a knucklehead for nothing.

"And?!"

"And?" she repeated, turning to look at him, almost dumbfounded.

"That would mean I won!"

"How?" She seemed exasperated at his words now.

"Because you've been holding back this entire time! Which means if you go all out now! That would mean I impressed you! Which means I won!" Even he didn't believe his own words. It was obvious from her face that she didn't either. And yet…

"Ha… Haha…" She exploded into a full blow laughter that brought Naruto's grim resolution into a full-blown smile. She had a nice laugh.

"You… You…" She laughed again, and again. "Why do you stupid kids always… always…"

He couldn't fault her there. His intelligence was low. But it still hurt a bit. Mentally.

[Relationship with ? has increased, 2]

[Relationship has changed. Menace to Neutral.]

[Ding! Urgent Quest Complete!]

Was it, though?

The woman spun on her heel, flashing her shakujō once more, and readying herself.

"Come at me then, kid. Show me what you can really do."

He didn't need to be told twice.

Water was his best bet right now, so he quickly formed his five clones on the first try to set to work.

Water Jutsu flew through the air as he changed his own title to Spring Breeze and set to work. "Make sure to use that new wind jutsu!" He shouted over the battle cry of his clones. The DEX boost would be great for dodging, at least.

His own hands were soon gripping kunai, and a thought occurred to him. He didn't necessarily need to throw the chakra coated weapons, right?

"Wind Style: Coated Shuriken!" He dashed forward, kunai screeching in hand, and engaged the woman in close combat.

The smile never left her face.

He smacked away her shakujō, the rapidly moving wind helping to knock the weapon away as he slashed and stabbed at her.

Hit! 0 Damage

Even her clothes seemed unaffected, and yet he refused to let up on his charge.

"You've got guts!"

He backed off, hoping to distract the woman as two clones leaped into the air from behind her, but before they could attack, some forced slammed them into the ground, cratering the ground around in a perfect circle around her. Approaching thrown weapons were plucked from the sky, instantly falling to the ground and ignoring all momentum. Another clone jumped forward, but was skewered through the skull and thrown to the ground. It sat there unmoving, dead.

"Aren't clones supposed to burst immediately?!" He mentally shouted at the frankly traumatic display.

"Consider it a scare tactic," the woman's voice echoed around him. He spun, looking wild, but she was nowhere to be found.

[Warning: Gamer's Mind Protection has been overpowered.]

"Is that even allowed!?"

There!

She appeared from nothing, as if walking through an invisible doorway. The bottom half of her staff was first, then the rest of her as she stepped through.

"You can't tell me some clones, water, and wind are all you've got!"

He barely dodged the next swipe of her staff, though his clone wasn't lucky either.

"I thought you were going to be some kind of fire shadow!" His last clone was crushed by that same weird force, and suddenly he was on his knees, feeling the weight of the world on his shoulders.

"That's only about three times the normal planet's gravity. And you can't even stand?"

Gravity? That's what this was.

"Pathetic."

Naruto could barely wiggle his fingers under the strain as his chest slowly lowered closer to the ground.

"You dare call yourself a leader of your people? Yet you can't even stand this? Imagine if I did it by ten times, or a hundred!"

She was right. He needed to stand.

"When I led my people in war, even they could walk under this pressure as I exerted it over the entire battlefield!"

He could just barely move his arm under him, and tried to desperately push himself up.

"Like this force, the people you lead will weigh heavy on your shoulders. Do you really want to deal with that burden?"

His wind and water weren't enough, but he didn't have anything else!

Or did he?

He had already received three other elemental jutsus, hadn't he? "I can use the Fire Flies Jutsu without having a Fire Nature." He couldn't unlock a jutsu that didn't meet his nature requirement. So…

"When your people die around you, how will someone like you possibly be able to save them?" It wasn't a question. It was a statement. And Naruto raged at the words.

He pushed through the pain as a half-baked plan formed in his mind.

"Clones again?" She scoffed as he slowly began to rise from the dirt.

"You…" He grit his teeth through the pain as his lungs burned and his blood was pulled down by the gravity. He threw all thoughts out of his mind except for his clones. His clones. Clones! "…Wish.

"Oh?"

"Fire Style: Fire Flies!"

Dozens of flames burst from his mouth, causing the woman to scowl. She dropped the gravity and twirled her staff, dismissing the flames with ease, but it distracted her for less than a second.

[Gamer's Mind has—]

Five clones spawned into existence as the rest of his plan finally began to form without having to worry about her forcing her way back in for a second.

"What is it this time!? Water again? Wind? Got some other pathetic flames for me?!"

"Lightning Style: Coated Shuriken!"

Ten, then twenty, then thirty and more and more weapons were thrown as the clones bombarded the woman, but unlike the water or wind ones, even the blocked tools gave off a hit notification.

"Same canvas, just different paint!" Barely any of the weapons actually hit her physically, and just like the blocked ones, the damage was still 0.

Until.

Hit! 0 Damage.

Due to a skill, the target has been paralyzed for 3 seconds.

That was all Naruto needed. As shock filled her eyes just as she froze as lightning danced across her body. The weapons didn't end, however, and as more hit, more notifications filled the screen.

One clone ran out, and it was easily replaced to restock.

The real Naruto jumped into the air from behind her, landing on her shoulders with ease as he swapped to his Wind title, and jabbed an enhanced kunai at her neck.

Critical Hit! 1 Damage!

And then the world ended.

Or that's what it felt like as power exploded from the woman, turning his clones into dust, and instantly flinging the real Naruto through the open air off of her shoulders.

Hit! 26 Damage!

Knocked Out

HP: 1/49

His vision turned black as he soared through the air.

Only for it to fade back in as he gasped for a breath.

Naruto hit the ground hard and rolled down the hill with a groan.

At least the grass was soft.

A soft whistle was the only thing he heard, and suddenly his vision was blocked as a large figure appeared, blocking the light of the sun.

"You…"

He couldn't move.

"You hurt me."

A thin line of blood was on her neck, and yet there was no hole, no scratch, nothing.

Her weapon was raised.

But Naruto refused to look away.

If this was how he died, then…

The weapon descended.

He wondered if that kid would be Hokage in his absence.

But… time passed, and there was no pain.

He looked at the staff, and saw it was imbedded in the grass by his head, and her hand was stretched out, waiting to help him up.

"I won." He grinned as wide as he possibly could.

"We'll call it a tie." She grabbed his arm and wrench him to his feet. He didn't even feel any pain, and with a quick glance at his health, he realized he was full once more.

"That sounds like a sore loser talking!"

"Want to go another round?"

He grimaced at the rebuke.

"Is your quest complete?"

He blinked at the question and sheepishly scratched the back of his head.

"Yeah…" Plus a hidden quest, apparently.

"What was the point of this anyhow? Why here, why me?" She asked. "I doubt ******** sent you here for no reason."

"I still don't know who that is. But uh, the system sent me here on a big quest."

"System?" she asked, confused.

"You don't know anything about it?"

"Not a clue."

What word was being censored then? "I… I'm trying to find my Something."

"Your something?"

"With a capital S."

She snorted.

"I got this… gift, the system. And It's been a big help with making me stronger, but… I don't know if it's dangerous or not. And I kind of lost my way, I guess. I didn't know what to do. So it gave a quest."

"To come bother me on my day off?"

The woman had a job? "Not just you. You're actually one of the last ones on my list. I only needed to do three, but it gave me eight options."

"And did you find this Something?"

"I'm not sure."

"Then what have you learned?"

"You, the monkey, the old man, Sasuke, and that kid taught me a bit, but. I'm still not sure."

"So you learned nothing?"

He shook his head. "If I have strength, I should use it the right way. Just like Nothing did."

"Nothing." Her eyes narrowed at him.

"Yeah, a story that the system told me to motivate me, I guess."

"What was the story?"

"Well, a man wanted to help, so he did…" And he relayed the story.

A long sigh escaped from the woman as she looked far into the distance. "What does ******** have to do with this system?"

"You know something?"

"You can't hear his name, can you?"

"No."

"I wonder why…" She shook her head. "Tell me what you learned."

"Well, like I said. I have this power, so I should use it for the right reasons. I should become strong so that I can rise above any challenge. I—You aren't the only one who tried to tell me that I shouldn't be the Hokage just because that a Leader isn't someone who is simply strong. The Old Man taught me that I should be strong for others, Sasuke-teme too, I guess. If I were weaker than the teme, he could have seriously injured himself, I was able to help him easier due to my strength. And I had the heart to help, thanks to my Will of Fire."

"Will of Fire, huh?" The woman muttered, but Naruto continued.

"Then I met this kid in a different tear. He told me his reasons for becoming Hokage. He wanted to bring peace to the Village, to stop our enemies and help even the smallest person. I think… I think he would make a better Hokage than me."

"Strength is useless without something to protect."

[Warning: You will return in two minutes.]

"Is that why you are the one who protects?" That was weird to say.

A soft smile spread over her lips, and she chuckled, "Something like that."

Silence fell over the two as the seconds ticked by.

"Before you leave, kid, let me give you some advice."

Naruto nodded while watching the clock tick down.

"******** Was nothing when he first started out, and he did find his something. But he had strength, and he became a leader with it. The entire world bowed before him, yet it took years before he discovered exactly how to lead. So here's my advice for impressing me. Don't just worry about your physical power, learn how to lead before you take the reins. And when you reign, do so with grace and humility."

"I promise I will."

"I'm not looking for a promise over something so easily broken."

"But—"

"When you begin to lead, you will fail. Everyone does at some point, some fail more than others. I lost my everything, ******** lost the world, and I'm sure your Shadows have lost something as well. But the most important thing to do is to make sure you stand back up when your people need you. You can prepare as much as you need, but preparations will only mitigate the problems, not solve them. Just make sure you always stand after stumbling. If you stay down, then you've fallen, and nothing can save you then."

"Right."

"Also, I wouldn't worry too much about that system if it's talking about ********, he doesn't do things by half. So if he's involved, then I doubt it's malicious. Keep your guard up with it, but if you get stronger with it, then don't waste that strength. Now go on… be a hero."

"I will."

And Naruto faded away.

Standing on her mountain once more, the woman walked back to the top of her mountain and sat, mediating once more now that peace had returned.

"Yo." And it was shattered.

"What do you want?"

"Can't I come to pay my family a visit?" His cheerful voice made her chest heat up, and slowly the woman turned and starred at her masked friend.

"Not when you want something."

"Just a small favor."

"Tell me about it later. I've got something important to tell you."

The man fell beside her, swinging his legs over the cliff face and watching the sea of clouds gently drift around them. "Shoot."

"Someone was just here, a boy."

"Really? A kid made it up here?"

She snorted. "You're telling me you know nothing about it?"

"Was there anything that would make you so sure?"

"Besides it being something you'd do? He couldn't hear your name."

"Really?"

"He also mentioned a system and your story. How Nothing became Something."

"Really?" He sounded almost concerned. "I haven't told that story in… Gods. Centuries now? I've got way better ones anyhow."

"The system was what worried me."

"Ah… a system… it can't be?"

"Something you know?"

"Not sure, but… maybe I should… nah, I'm sure it'll sort itself out."

"But will it come back to bite you in the ass?"

The man laughed, a real one for the first time in a long while, and she couldn't help but smile. "Hopefully not… hopefully not…"

"Whatever you say."

She left the conversation and chose to watch the clouds drifted by as the sakura blossoms fluttered past their heads. It was peaceful, and a perfect time to meditate.

"So about that favor—"

Her angry scowl stopped him in his tracks. "How about a spar instead, so I can throw you off of here?"

It was meant to be a threat but—"Sounds good to me."

(AN: So we got some answers and some more questions like who are these two mysterious people!? Naruto has finally seemed to find his purpose, his Something, but there's one more quest left within reach. What will be next for our little shinobi? Next chapter will definitely be the end of the Academy section of this story. I know I said that last time, but I wanted to get this out for Christmas. So anyway, I hope you all enjoyed and don't forget to leave a review to fuel me. You all have a good one!)
