Chapter 36: Regulations be damned (part 2)
Brion gasped as he woke up and saw that he was in a tank, a thick, black liquid was raising and already at his waist and quickly rising. He looked to his left to see Connor also in a tube.
"Stop this, let me out!" He shouted, bamming on the glass. "Dr. Jace! Please, help me!" He begged as the liquid reached his chest. Dr. Jace walked up to Brion's tube and placed her hands on the glass right where Brion had his.
"Don't worry, my child. This is for the best." Dr. Jace said trying to reassure Brion. Brion only looked back at her with a betrayed look that turned into a glare right before the liquid above his head as he tried to shout at her once more.
"Are you sure you're recovered?" Artemis asked Jefferson "I'm sure, we've gotta to go, Conner needs us." "Your powers working?" Joshua asked. Jefferson looked at his hand, lightning lightly sparked around it before dissipating. "Still hoping we won't need em'."
Artemis then turned to the girl she saved. "We are going to save our super-friend, you are going to stay right here with our Supercycle. Understand?" Artemis said as clearly as she could with several hand gestures hoping that the girl would understand. The girl just stared at Artemis with a blank look. Artemis sighed.
"Just keep here out of trouble, okay?" Artemis asked Supercycle who beeped in reply. "Thanks. Okay, let's move." Artemis said, drawing her bow as she, Joshua, and Jefferson walked off.
Dick walked into the hospital, grabbed a lab coat, and made a way to the morgue. Once inside, He dropped the lab coat and equipped his gear.
"I'm in, where are you guys?" He asked. "we're two minutes out." Joshua replied. "S.B." Dick asked, he sighed when he didn't get a response from the two clones.
After making his way into train station, dick sent the bug ahead to see what was going on. It saw Vertigo ordering some henchmen around, they we're loading the pods onto one of the train car.
"Nightwing, you have to stop that shipment before they it can leave." Jefferson said after he his group received the footage of what the goons were doing. "Negative. Those kids aren't going anywhere fast on rails, I need to find S.B. and the prince first." Dick said as he sneaked around the henchmen. "Then activate the spy gear we planted, it might speed up your search." Jefferson said. "Sorry, but they got destroyed." Dick said, disappointing Jefferson.
He entered the observation room and glanced into the lab, he saw Dr. Jace and Dr. Ecks standing next to the tube that held Conner, he saw a second pod being drained of the black liquid and revealed Prince Brion.
"Got eyes on Dr. Ecks and… Dr. Jace. They've got our boys, unconscious, in pods." "Oh boy, Connor's not gonna like that." Joshua said. "Not at all." Artemis agreeing. Brion's in the next pod over. "I think they tried to awaken his meta-gene." Dick said. "Arriving now." Jefferson said. "Then I'm going in."
One of the lab doors opened and Vertigo walked in.
"We're ready to move in-" Artemis started to say, but she was cut off. "Wait. Something's happening." Dick then showed them what he was seeing.
"Explain yourselves!" Vertigo asked. "Count Vertigo, we-" Dr. Ecks tried to say, but Vertigo cut him off. "I have spoken with His Highness, and he gave no order for the tarring of a Prince of the realm!" Vertigo grabbed Ecks by the shirt and glared at him.
"His Highness? Does he mean Gregor?" Dick asked aloud.
"You will answer me! Now!" Vertigo let go of Dr. Ecks. "You lied to me." Dr. Ecks shouted, pointing at Dr. Jace. "You said the boss ordered us to do all this." "I had to! His 'Highness' is out of control! The things he made us do… but now we have someone with the power to stop him, stop Bedlam!"
Vertigo hit her with a psychic blast, making her fall to her knees. "You ignorant peasant. The goals we are working towards far exceed your short-sighted morality. I will do whatever I have to in order to get what I need, even delivering control of Markovia to him! And you will not interfere."
"If Vertigo's helping Gregor take Markovia…" Jefferson started. "Then we can bet that Gregor will help Vertigo take Vlatava in return, giving the Count the Kingdom he's always wanted." Joshua finished. "And both countries will end up under the light's control." Dick added.
Vertigo stopped his assault on Dr. Jace, leaving her on the ground, coughing and sweating buckets. "His Highness will be coming soon to decide what to do with you, all of you." "Well, if it isn't Baron Bedlam himself." Dr. Jace said between pants as Baron DeLamb walked in.
"I needed this organization to operate without me for one night, so that I would not be interrupted while playing the role of Regent to the King, but it seems that was too much to ask." "Baron DeLamb! Dr. Jace has betrayed us." Dr. Ecks said with a bow.
"How did I not realize that DeLamb was an anagram for Bedlam?! Ugh, I should've seen this coming!" Dick said, frustrated with himself.
"Look out!" Joshua shouted when she noticed Plasmas coming up behind Artemis and Jefferson, Artemis pushed Jefferson out of the way and jumped back to avoid Plasmas' stomp. It then walked towards the downed Artemis, Jefferson tried to use his powers but all he got was a few sparks around his fingers "No, no!"
Artemis put up her arms in defense as Plasmas was about to punch her, Joshua ran, grabbed her and held her down with his back to plasmas waiting for the impact, but the punch was blocked by a red force field.
Artemis looked up to see the girl she saved, with a red aura around her body and red glowing eyes. "No kill." The girl said. Supercycle came up behind her and blasted Plasmas, sending it flying.
"So glad you didn't listen, um… Halo girl?" Artemis said as they both jumped on to Supercycle.
Plasmas roared as it began to get up. "We can't fight him down here, it's to tight." "Then we go up. Supercycle, JJ, clear a path!" Supercycle then aimed her guns at the ceiling and Joshua aimed his now glowing fists up as well.
Helga, this betrayal will cost you more than –" DeLamb started to say before an explosion shock the whole facility. Vertigo ran out and saw Plasmas and two of his henchmen fighting Supercycle, he then went to help the others load of pods onto the train car.
"Guys?" Dick asked. "We need an exit! And back-up!" Jefferson replied.
"Make sure she doesn't move; we'll take care of the shipment." DeLamb said, handing Dr. Ecks a gun. "Of course, sir." Ecks said with a small smile. Before He could shoot Dr. Jace, Dr. Ecks was knocked out by Dick.
"Don't worry, I'm here to rescue-" Dick started to say but Dr. Jace cut him off with a grunt. "out of my way." She said as she made her way to Brion's pod while holding her stomach in pain. The pod opened and Brion fell out and into Dr. Jace's arms, but in her weakened state she and Brion fell to the ground.
While Dr. Jace looked over Brion, Dick got Conner out of his pod. "Come on guys, we really need you right now." Dick said as the two clones stepped out of their pods, groaning and holding their heads.
"We're going to shut this place down and destroy all of the tar." Dick stated, certain that this will be the outcome. "I will show you how." Dr. Jace said getting a nod from Dick.
Artemis, Jefferson, Joshua, and Supercycle were having a lot of trouble with the goons and Plasmas. Plasmas tagged Supercycle with some lava balls making her crash. DeLamb look at a monitor and saw what was going on in the lab, this just made him angrier, he then pressed a button and took a drive out of the console.
Plasmas was slamming his fists against Halo girl's barrier while she was trying to protect Artemis and Jefferson. Joshua was floating overhead firing small plasma blasts at Plasma's back, but they were having little effect.
"Uh… Nightwing?!" Artemis asked over the comms. "Working on it." Plasmas hit the shield again, the hit dug the shield deeper into the ground which made it smaller. "Nightwing!" "Still working on it!"
"Shipments loaded, send it now!" DeLamb ordered, Vertigo nodded and reached into his coat and pulled out a Motherbox. DeLamb jumped into a special car as a Boomtube opened up under the train car, everyone was sent flying as the train car fell into the Boomtube and disappeared.
"No! the kids, we've lost them! They Boomtube them away!" Jefferson said disappointed.
"We have to get out of here!" Dick said as he and the others from the lab came out. They all loaded up in the Supercycle and left Bedlam, the lab exploded afterwards.
Back at the party, several soldiers surrounded the guests and DeLamb stepped up to the podium.
"Ladies and Gentlemen, it has come to my attention that Prince Brion Markov is a Meta-Human working with other meta-humans to destabilize Markova's national security!" "That is preposterous!" Prince Gregor shouted, angry that his uncle would say such things. "No, my prince. Sad to say, but I have evidence to prove it." DeLamb said then showed the drive that had the security footage from the lab.
"We've got the evidence we need to bring down DeLamb and Bedlam. Dr. Jace's testimony will seal the deal." Dick said. "We lost eight kids! Plus, that... that Plasmas kid they have!" Jefferson shouted, cutting off Dick. "We saved Artemis' friend here and the Prince, and this will keep countless other kids from becoming their victims." "It's not the perfect victory we wanted, but it's good enough." Joshua added in.
Brion groaned awake and let out a yelp when he saw Dr. Jace. "You get away from me." "Brion, please Calm-" Dr. Jace said but was cut off when her hand got burned from touching Brion's shoulder. He jumped out of the Supercycle and looked at the team.
"Who are you people?" he asked in panic as the sand beneath his feet began to melt and turn into lava. "What… is happening?" He asked trying to walk but every step he took made him sink deeper into the sand until he was completely submerged. Everyone gasped seeing this, Dr. Jace jumped out of the Supercycle as the trail of lava ran across the beach. After traveling for a few yards, Brion popped out of the ground covered in solid rock that looked like armor.
"Help me! Help me!" he shouted trying to get himself out of the ground. Dr. Jace ran up to him and kneeled down Infront of him. "You need to calm down! Your meta-gene has been activated. Your body is manipulating geologic forces." "Make it stop! Please, make it stop!"
"The more you panic, the less control you'll have. You need to focus on your breathing." Conner said in a gentle tone and Brion listened. Brion's breathing was shaky but it seemed to work as the lava around him cooled and hardened.
Dick got a message from Oracle to turn on the TV. "Guys, look!" He said, pulling up a holoscreen that showed the news.
Baron DeLamb was showing the footage from the lab that showed Brion becoming a meta-human and using that to pin the blame f the meta-human trafficking, the disappearance of his sister, and the deaths of his parents on him.
Brion stood up, fists clenched, and tears poring out of his eyes. "Lies!" he shouted at the top of his lungs. He looked back at the party, he went back underground while running towards the castle.
"This just keeps getting worse." Jefferson said. "He's headed for the palace. Me and Superboy will try to cut him off-" Joshua started to say before a Boomtube opened up behind them, out walked Vertigo, Plasmas, Dr. Ecks, and the Henchmen.
"He must have used a Fatherbox the track Supercycle." Artemis said. "S.B., L.G.! we'll protect the doctor and the girl. You two, get Brion." Dick ordered getting a nod from the two super clones, Joshua grabbed Conner's arm and flew off towards the castle, Vertigo laughed.
"Sending your heavy hitters away? Not a smart move. I see your down two who actually have powers, I'll raise you one, two, three, four." He counted as Dr. Ecks multiplied.
"We're outnumbered." Jefferson said, glancing over to Dick. "Then let's level the playing field." Dick said and through down a smock bomb that completely hid them from view.
At the palace, Brion erupted out of the ground with a roar, now looking like a lava monster and scaring everyone. "DeLamb!" He shout, his voice muffled by the molten rock surrounding his face. He jumped at his traitorous uncle, but DeLamb was not fazed, he punched Brion away only get a few spots of lava on his coat.
Brion pulled the lava around his head back, revealing his face, shocking the crowd. DeLamb removed his shirt and coat revealing that his was a meta-human as well, his body was made out a stone, his face was a skin mask. Suddenly Conner and Joshua landed in between the two.
"Prince Brion, we gotta go. There's a better way to handle this and we can help you find it." Connor said, his hands up in as a sigh of no aggression. "And so, our worst fears are confirmed! Prince Brion Markov is in league with meta-human assassins!" DeLamb says further turning the crowd against Brion. "But you're a mate-human as well!" Gregor said calling his uncle out for being a hypocrite. "I had to become one to defend us against them!" "Liar! That's why I did it, to defend my country from you!"
"Brion, no!" Joshua said but Brion yelled and attacked his uncle again, as they fought it was clear that Brion had no experience in combat as DeLamb was tossing him around with ease. Brion tried throwing lava at DeLamb but he just swatted them away, Conner and Joshua were grabbing people from the crowd and keeping them out of harm's way.
DeLamb knocked Brion to the ground and towered over him. "Finish him, now, open fire!" He ordered the surrounding soldiers. "Disregard that order! Arrest Baron DeLamb." Gregor ordered. "You dare, little prince?! I am in control of the security forces now that I've proven-" DeLamb said but got cut off.
"What you have proven here is your hypocrisy. You yourself, as a mate-human, have been scapegoating other meta-humans. Clearly, you've been doing business with the meta-human traffickers that my parents were trying to stop. You lied to them. And you great skill with your meta-ability shows that you've have time to master it, which tells me you've had your powers long before my brother. It is clear your deceptions were the groundwork for a coup against my family and Markovia." Gregor explained making the soldiers hesitate.
"You have no hard evidence!" DeLamb argued. "We have enough to mount an investigation into your affairs. I place you under arrest for the murder of my mother and father."
DeLamb's shocked look turn into a snarl, he yelled as he ran at Gregor. Joshua jumped Infront of him and punched him in the face, sending him flying back. Brion then tried to grab him from behind but he shook him off, he then threw a punch at Conner who dodged and hit him in the face. This continued, Conner was faster than DeLamb, he then switched with Joshua who hit DeLamb with an uppercut that launched him in the air, he landed with a grunt. He moaned in pain as he stayed down.
"Thank you." Gregor said the two super clones nodded in response. "At least your safe now, brother." Brion said happily before they all hear several guns cocking.
The soldiers were aiming at Brion. "What are you doing? I'm not the criminal, DeLamb is!" Gregor said in fear.
"Your highness, whatever the Baron's crimes, your brother also has much to answer for. And if I may say, Markovia has suffered enough at the hands of meta-humans." The ambassador said, stating the hard truth. "Ambassador-" Gregor started to say but was cut off when the ambassador put his hand on his shoulder. "Please listen to me, my prince. Your country needs a new beginning, a new king, now more than ever."
Gregor looked down at the Ambassador's words and Brion looked worried as he walked over to him.
"Brother." "Gregor, please, don't do this." Brion begged. "You must leave Markovia. Immediately." Gregor said without turning to face Brion who fell to his knees in sorrow. Conner and Joshua were at his side immediately.
"Please, take care of him." Gregor asked. Conner nodded, put Brion's arm over his shoulder and jumped off. "Be careful." Joshua said before jumping after them.
