Chapter 5: On the Road: Day 1

Agent BM: Yes it is.

Rockifier: Thx.

Darraq: Don't worry, she will.

As the sun rose higher, the participants continued down the road. Many people stood on the sidewalks to cheer them on. As Bessie wheeled herself along, she looked out at the crowds. Everyone was smiling, cheering, and holding up signs.

There were even some news people with cameras, and reporters had gotten onto the road, and were asking some of the participants questions. She smiled, and felt a sense of pride.

"I can do this." she told herself, and pushed her chair on.

Back at home Bessie's parents and friends were watching TVs hoping to get a glimpse of her. Her parents were watching TV in their living room, her school friends were watching on the TV at the arcade, and her friends at Growing Lives were watching the TV in the rec room.

"Do you see her yet?" asked Zach.

"Not yet." replied Stella.

As they watched the screen, the bullies walked by.

"Hey, what you shrimps watching?" Anderson wanted to know.

"None of your business." snapped Rusty.

Taylor looked at the TV screen, and saw it was the walk-a-thon.

"So Wheelchair Girl decided to enter that dumb race after all?" she asked.

"Her name is Bessie." Clyde told them sternly.

"(Scoffs), bet she won't even make it to Great Lakes City." scoffed Pablo.

"You just wait and see. She can do it." Lincoln defended.

And he went back to watching the TV. The older kids just rolled their eyes, and left.

"Hey, there she is." informed Rusty.

They all saw Bessie wheeling herself along.

"You go, Bessie!" Liam cheered.

At Bessie's house, her parents and Baxter were still looking for Bessie on the screen.

"Where could she be?" wondered Leon.

Suddenly Baxter started squealing happily.

"What is it, Baxter?" Brittany asked.

Baxter trotted up to the TV, and squealed again. They looked at the screen and saw that Bessie was now on the screen.

"There's our girl." observed Leon.

"My little girl's on TV." Brittany said proudly.

On the TV screen, Bessie looked at the camera and smiled at the audience.

"I see her." Saskia said, pointing at the TV screen.

"I can't believe she's on TV." Ryan observed.

"Neither can I, kids." Ms. Goldsteen replied. Just then, Mr. Jones the driver for the center came into the room.

"Did I miss anything?" he asked.

"No, she's right there." told Ryan.

"I can't believe it, our Bessie's on TV."

"She's come a long way." Ms. Goldsteen said proudly.

"D-d-do you think she'll make it to the end?" Saskia asked.

"We can only hope she can." Ms. Goldsteen told her.

On the road, Bessie kept going. The sun shined down on all the participants, and when the sun got to be too hot Bessie used the features on her chair. She pressed a button, and the head shade pulled out.

Then she pulled out a water bottle from her backpack and drank some.

"So far this race isn't so bad." She told herself.

Just then, a girl a few years older than her came up next to her.

"Hey, cool wheelchair." she complimented.

"Thanks, had it decked out for the race." Bessie replied.

"See you at the end."

And she sprinted ahead. After a while, Bessie's arms got a little tired; so she stopped for a second. One of the race supervisors came up to her.

"You need a rest Bessie?" she asked her.

"No, I'm good. Besides my chair is also electric."

Bessie pressed a button and her wheelchair began rolling itself.

"All right, just let me know if you need anything."

And they kept going.

Then the first rest stop came. Participants could get a bite to eat, lie down, and freshen up. Bessie got a bag lunch, and wheeled herself over to a table. The bag lunch consisted of a turkey sandwich, a bag of chips, an apple, and a juice box.

As Bessie ate her lunch, she was approached by some reporters.

"Excuse us, sweetheart but would it be okay if we asked you a few questions?" a man asked her.

"Sure, go ahead." Bessie replied.

"What's your name?"

"Bessie, Bessie Milligan."

"And how old are you, Bessie?"

"I'm 12."

"What made you want to join this walk?"

"I wanted to do something beneficial to help people. And I wanted to do something productive this summer."

"That's very bold of you Bessie. Especially at your age."

"Thank you. Oh, would it be okay if hi to my family and friends?" "Go right ahead."

"Hi Mom and Dad. Hey Baxter. And hey you guys." Bessie said to the camera.

After everyone was ready, it was time to get back on the road.

"Here we go." Bessie told herself, as she wheeled herself back towards the road.

By the late afternoon, the group reached the first hotel where they'd be staying at. Everyone gathered their luggage from the bus, and got their room numbers. Bessie and the rest of the underage were escorted to their rooms, and they were all on the same floor.

In her room, Bessie pulled out her phone and video messaged her parents. When they answered, Brittany and Leon were happy to see her.

"Hi, Mom hi Dad."

"Hi, sweetheart how was your first day?" Brittany asked.

"It was pretty good, Mom. Did you guys see me on TV?"

"We did. You looked great, Bessie." Leon added.

Baxter's squealing was heard.

"Is that you, Baxter? Let me see you, boy."

Brittany moved the phone, and showed Baxter.

"Hey, buddy. I miss you."

Baxter squealed at her as if to say,

"I miss you too."

After talking with them for a while, Bessie said goodbye to them and texted her friends in a group chat. They were all glad she's doing okay, and made it to the first stop. They saw her shout out to them, and also mentioned what the bullies said.

But Bessie texted them saying she didn't care what they said. She was in this race now and she wasn't backing out. After all that Bessie had dinner, got cleaned up, and went to bed.
