"Edward?" A male voice calls, breaking our moment. I look down the hallway to see an older man with blond hair making his way in our direction. The resemblance between the two is undeniable.
"What are you doing here? Is everything okay?" The man, whose badge says Dr. Carlisle Cullen, confirming that this is in fact Edward's dad, is looking between the two of us with concern etched into his features.
Edward turns toward his dad, putting his hand on my lower back. "Everything's fine, we're just here for Bella's mom."
Carlisle looks in my direction, realization dawning in his eyes at my name. Apparently, his mom wasn't the only one he'd talked to about me. "So, you're Bella." He smiles at me, the same crooked grin that his son gave me that made me weak in the knees. "I've heard a lot about you. It's nice to put a face to the name, I just wish it was under better circumstances."
"It's nice to meet you, as well." I smile at him, feeling slightly awkward. Meeting parents wasn't something that I had prepared for, but here we were. In this situation, it was kind of inevitable.
"What's your mom's name?" he asked, going back into doctor mode. "I can see if I can expedite getting you all out of here. It's been a slow night."
"Renee Swan." As soon as her name is out of my mom, Carlisle chuckles.
"I'm sorry, I don't mean to laugh. She's just already my patient." After everything that's happened tonight, it was a poetic ending that he was my mom's doctor. "She's… something. Hasn't been able to stop talking about you. She's obviously very proud."
"She does like to brag." I loved that my mom was proud and liked talking about what I did; it made me feel good that she was so supportive. There were just sometimes that she went overboard, and I had a feeling that tonight was one of those times.
"That she does." He smiles again. "I sent her for a CT just to be on the safe side. I would be surprised if anything showed up on the scan, but it's better to be safe than sorry. It shouldn't take too long to get the results back, then you all can be on your way."
"Thank you, Dr. Cullen."
"Call me Carlisle. I'm sure I'll be seeing you again." He winks at me and I can see where Edward gets his charm.
"Thank you, Carlisle."
"I have some other patients I need to check on. I'll be back around once I get those results." He excuses himself, heading back down the hall and disappearing around the corner.
"I am sorry that this is how our night ended." I tell Edward once we're alone again.
"There's no other place I'd rather be." He takes my hand, giving me a soft, crooked smile, which makes me remember the kiss and my lips tingle.
"Let's just say I owe you a redo." I offer. The guilt in my gut at not being there for my mom when she needed me was mixing with the guilt over how our date had ended. I wasn't sure how to balance any of this. Being a care giver complicated many things in my life; dating was just another one of those things to add to the list.
Edward's free hand comes to cup my cheek, his thumb stroking the skin, making me feel like I was being set ablaze. "I liked this one."
I see it coming this time, so when he leans down to press his lips against mine, I raise up on my tiptoes to meet him. It's even better than before. Our lips move together in a perfect synchronization that has me melting into him. I was sure I hadn't felt like this before, I'd never had someone kiss me like this. He was taking his time, stealing my breath and making me lose my mind. Slowing the kiss down, he placed two chaste kisses against my mouth before pulling away.
"I'm all in, Bella. It's going to take a lot more than this to get rid of me."
See you next time!
