"No act of kindness, no matter how small, is ever wasted."
The Courier continued to develop his plan and was in the finalization stage, when he heard an explosion. Instinctively grabbing his Ranger Sequoia, slamming the door open and bolting down the stairs, only to see Vaggie pointing at the ruined ceiling, annoyed, she turned back to Pentious.
"GET THEM FUCKING OUT OF HERE NOW!"
"B-but they-" Vaggie cut him off sharply.
"Do you want to stay here OR NOT!?"
"Yes…" Pentious' tone was reluctant and slightly somber, with The Courier watching the whole ordeal, wondering how the hell the egg creatures worked, or why he was starting to choke up.
"Then get rid of them." Pentious' eyes watered at this, with a nod he looked over at them.
"Y-You've got to go. I can't…keep you anymore." The eggs saluted, and waddled away, changing course as Vaggie whistled to get the eggs to follow her.
"Courier, come with me, I need you to do something." The Courier nodded, following Vaggie, going to an unfamiliar part of the hotel. She opened the door with a black key, turning it to reveal Alastor eating a rotting deer carcass.
"Oh! Sorry you've caught me enjoying my first meal of the day, what brings you two here?"
"Pentious' egg things are fucking up the place, and I need you to get rid of them, now…" She glanced at The Courier, with Alastor quickly stopping his "breakfast", his posture excited.
"Well, I can certainly help with your predicament," Alastor checked his non-existent watch before sliding the half-eaten deer carcass onto the floor.
"Why don't you go with Al to keep an eye on him? I'm sure he won't mind, right Alastor?" She glanced at Alastor, who smiled more widely.
"Of course, of course, don't worry, I always savor the opportunity to get closer to our…'compatriots'." He wrapped an arm around The Courier, leading him out of the room.
"Tell me, have you ever heard of the Overlords?" The Courier shrugged at Alastor.
"No? Well, you're about to get some firsthand experience!" He led The Courier down the stairs and out of the hotel, with the eggs following behind. As soon as they left the hotel, the eggs started to ask questions, with both Alastor and The Courier ignoring.
"Hey, what's that helmet for?"
"Where'd you get that gun?"
"Can I hold it?"
"What's that staff for?"
They continued with a barrage of questions for some time, Alastor tightened his grip on his staff slightly. The Courier walked unfazed, they were curious. The duo walked a bit more, stopping in their tracks as a shadow spiralled upwards in front of them into a tall figure with gray skin, a worn and patched tophat, with lime stripes on his limb-like posterior structures, the eggs trembled at the sudden apparition in a mix of terror and awe.
"Let me guess, an old friend?"
"Correct, you would be my fair companion." Alastor's tone was one of amusement, with the eggs chattering, but The Courier turned to them, crouching down.
"Listen, I get your excitement, but I recommend being quiet, otherwise you're gonna be a lot more scrambled." He got back up, facing the new demon, with Alastor piping up.
"Greetings Zestial." The demon, Zestial, eyed up The Courier with intrigue.
"Whom hast thou brought, Alastor?"
"Someone you might find to be quite remarkable…" Zestial nodded, changing the subject.
"It has been a long time since thoust graced us with thy presence. Some hast-" Zestial carried on, as demons ran and hid from the mere presence of Zestial. The Courier tuned out of the conversation as they exchanged pleasantries. The trio and eggs walked towards an alleyway which had a row of elevators, obviously this wasn't normal in Hell, with The Courier's posture tensing. They passed by a camera, the trio looking up before the doors opened, all three of them entering.
"You wait here…" Alastor blocked the eggs from entering with his staff before the elevator doors closed.
"Why are you having me tag along?" The Courier's question was expected, Alastor still grinning as per usual.
"Because I feel like you've done something quite remarkable! And It's not too often I get to play show and tell." As the lift rose, The Courier listened to the music over the speakers, a quick jazz tune with a xylophone as the lead instrument, before the doors opened to a gray boardroom, a whiteboard at the far end of the table. The Courier had nowhere to sit, so he stood in the corner.
"Who's that?" The Courier got out from his corner, the overlords turning to him.
"I was invited here by Alastor, I hope that's not a problem." Carmilla turned to Alastor, her eyes neutral.
"Did you invite an ordinary sinner here?"
"I wouldn't call him a sinner per se, but yes, I did." Carmilla shrugged it off, not caring. If Alastor trusted him, he wasn't a risk.
Carmilla resumed the business at hand, going on uninterrupted until The Courier raised his hand.
"Yes?" He cleared his throat, being polite and respectful about this.
"You lost 16% of the population of Hell during the last proper Extermination, right?" Carmilla nodded.
"Then correct me if I'm wrong, but are you pertaining to a certain area of Hell, or all 7 rings?" Carmilla was about to respond before the doors were kicked open, Velvette entering, on a phone call with Vox, annoying The Courier.
"Yes Vox, I know, I'll-" She saw The Courier, stopping mid sentence.
"I'll talk to you after the meeting, Vox." She hung up, sitting down in a chair that The Courier didn't see before.
"How nice of you to join us…Velvette, will your friends be joining soon?" Her tone was sarcastic, but only subtly so.
"No, they are on important business." It was clear to The Courier she was being polite to keep a strong image in front of him, due to Vox's desires for The Courier.
"Anyways, Courier, before we were interrupted, it was-" Velvette raised her hand, with Carmilla turning.
"Yes?"
"If we're talking about the Extermination then…" She threw an Exorcist head on the table, which caused The Courier to seize up before realizing the Exorcist he killed only had their neck sliced, this must have been from the Extermination a bit before he got here. Carmilla had suspicion at The Courier now, did he know the "secret" that Carmilla knew?
"Where did you get that?" It was The Courier's voice, not Carmilla's, which surprised Velvette. His tone sounded harsh and a bit uneasy.
"Found it on Extermination day, the ACTUAL one, not that lame cheap raid they had going. This changes everything, we can take the fight to the-" The Courier cleared his throat loudly, with Zestial sipping his tea loudly to drown her out.
"If this be true, and your desire to wage war with such meagre proof, you are more foolish than I ever thought." Velvette forced her face into a smile.
"The proof? It's right there on the table." The Courier cleared his throat again.
"To be fair, this IS solid proof, albeit we don't know how it died." Zestial nodded at The Courier.
"Yes, I quite agree, though if we rush to a war without knowing, might they not purge all of Hell, for daring an uprise?" The Courier already guessed that Heaven was going to do that, whether or not a mass uprising happened, due to what happened at the hotel.
"I get it, you're too soft, and because of that, there's no fucking point." Velvette got up into Zestial's face. "Let me guess, you're too fucking senile to make an actual power-" The Courier could tell her facade was fading fast, but before he could say anything, Carmilla cut her off.. An argument broke out, with The Courier watching out of entertainment. Before long, Carmilla had enough, slamming both fists on the table.
"This meeting is OVER." The Courier got up, walking over to Alastor.
"Well that could have gone better." Alastor nodded, smiling. "Did you have any business to deal with before going back to the hotel?"
"No." The other overlords got up, leaving with Alastor, and The Courier following them.
"Wait." He pointed to an egg, his grin more predatory.
"Egg, I've got an assignment for you. I want you to follow them." He pointed again, this time at Carmilla and her daughters, along with Zestial heading to a room. The egg saluted, following them in. The Courier said nothing, wondering what Charlie and the others were up to, Alastor interrupted his musings.
"Shall we get on?"
"Yeah." He said as he followed Alastor into the lift, soon arriving at the bottom where the other eggs were playing with garbage.
"Let's wait for our…egg friend shall we? Assuming he hasn't been scrambled." The Courier nodded again. Some time passed, with The Courier turning to Alastor.
"You know, how come you dislike new technology?"
"Well, I think it should be obvious but I'll explain. Old technology is my style, modern technology is too complicated and mindnumbing. How come you don't use it though? You have….very advanced armor, yet you still use that Pup-Bay or whatever it's called on your arm."
"Where I come from, we have nuclear powered technology."
"Nuclear powered huh? You must come from a very weird area on Earth…I like that, it makes you that much more unique."
"Yes it does." Alastor chuckled at that, when suddenly the elevator doors opened, revealing an egg, Alastor turned to the egg, chuckling more.
"Now, what did you hear?"
"First, the old guy was checking on her, then she said she killed then angel, then they-"
"What was that last part?"
"She killed an angel?" The Courier and Alastor turned to each other. The Courier saw something in Alastor's eyes, it was thoughtfulness.
"If she did kill an Exorcist, then they were already planning to wipe out Hell. They were going to return, regardless of your intervention."
"Good thing I'm here then. Those righteous pricks won't know what hit them." Alastor's grin stretched impossibly wide at his words.
"I like the cut of your jib, now… let's get back to the hotel." He walked off, The Courier and the eggs following them.
The Courier and Alastor walked in on the group talking, with Charlie and Vaggie on the balcony, waving at them.
"Well, if it isn't 'Order and Chaos', failed to get rid of those eggs eh?" Charlie snorted at the inherently true nickname for the duo.
"Yes..these little…creatures, proved to be quite useful."
"Well, considering they're still here, and Pentious proved his worth earlier, give them back to him, he deserves it." Pentious burst into tears, grabbing the eggs and hugging them. While that was happening, The Courier caught up with Alastor who was walking off.
"Did you need something else?" The Courier stood for a moment, thinking, before speaking.
"Thanks." Alastor was surprised by this, sure he was doing this for his own gain, but he didn't expect The Courier to enjoy it.
"Your welcome, my good mailman." He turned and walked off, a genuine smile on his face.
