Two months later
Lauren's skin crawled when she opened the front door. "What happened?!". She screamed.
"Nothing, really. I just need another pair of hands". Bo laughed. Kara and Dora were screaming at the top of their lungs.
"I'll help!". Lauren screamed over them. She picked up Kara as Bo held Dora.
"I'm sorry about this". Bo said sadly.
"No. Do not be sorry about this. This is what happens with babies. We just happen to be the mother of twin babies". Lauren rubbed Bo's back.
"It's lunch time and I ran out of hands". Bo explained.
"Well, soon they will probably know how to feed themselves". Lauren noted for the brunette.
"That's true". Bo laughed. She knew Lauren was trying to make light of a loud situation. The women walked the babies and then put them down for their nap. "Whew". Bo collapsed on the couch.
"I can take a few days off here and there". Lauren suggested.
"No. I want to do this. I can do this." Bo held her hand up.
"I didn't mean you can't do it. I mean I can take time off and do this too. So you won't have to do it all on your own". Lauren took Bo's hand.
"What are you doing home early anyway?". Bo smiled.
"Nice deflection. But I took the rest of the afternoon off. It seems they aren't the only ones that can sense distress". Lauren leaned in and lightly kissed Bo.
"It's worth it though. All of being a mother is worth it". Bo pulled Lauren to her and they sat back on the couch.
"Aife and the boys are right down the street." Lauren played with Bo's hand.
"I know. I just don't want to bother them with every little thing. We agreed that you would work and I would stay home. I'm not backing out of that". Bo kissed the Doctor's forehead.
"Speaking of which, I just made the last payment for Kenzi's rent". Lauren blew a breath out.
"That's our two months agreement, then. She's on her own now". Bo nodded.
"She's been doing fairly well. She's keeping up with her appointments. Although there's not much left of healing for her to do". Lauren looked around the house. Bo had been cleaning too.
"Let her doctor handle her treatments. I don't need all the details. Besides she might think we are poking into her life when we literally told her to but out of ours". Bo squeezed the blonde in her arms.
"That's very true. So, what's for lunch?". Lauren smiled wide.
"Your lunch was on the table. Geez, it's probably cold by now". Bo stood. She stopped when she noticed the plate top light up. "Or not". She laughed.
"Come and sit. Tell me about your morning". Lauren walked and took a seat at the table.
"Fasten your brain, doctor". Bo laughed as she sat across from the woman.
Kenzi
Kenzi felt her phone beep. It was a notice saying her second month's rent was just paid. She sighed in relief. Now she is from under that microscope, she can do her own thing. She has been doing her own thing since she was released. She has a nice house and a steady job. She's a mail courier but money is money. Thanks to Bo and Lauren, she's managed to save a little too. She knows this is probably part of their plan too. If they paid her rent, she can save money or blow it. She chose to blow it. She also chose a psychiatrist to see too. Something she's sure Lauren might know about by now. But she can't tell a soul. Not even Bo. So, here she sits. Eating lunch and people watching.
Aife, Albert and Stephen
The trio sat at a table. They eyed each other every now and then. "I'm going to win again, boys". Aife laughed.
"Do not let her win again, Stephen". Albert laughed.
"I'm trying. She said I can't use my powers so I have to play like I am still a human". Stephen laughed.
"Poker. Gin. I can play it all". Aife laughed again.
"Have you ever played Uno?". Stephen laughed.
"I have. I'm good at that too". Aife slapped the table with glee.
"Pool is next". Stephen shook his head.
"Again? I haven't beaten you enough at that already?". Aife winked.
Stephen laughed. They had been busy for two months going out on the town and playing every game they could think of. There wasn't much they could and couldn't do to get their jollies. The men had gone and mowed Bo and Lauren's lawn when the grass looked like it was growing too much and too high.
"So, we've been on vacation for about two months now. Are we ready to start working again?". Stephen asked.
"You can. I don't work. I refuse to". Aife laughed.
"You're a mother and grandmother, Aife. You work". Albert laughed.
"OOoo now that I will do!". Aife perked up.
"They are so big and beautiful". Albert smiled.
"They certainly are. I'm trying not to go over there. Come on, let's play something else". Aife folded and stood.
The men watched Aife look down the street and turn back the other way. She's been like this for weeks since Lauren started working full time again and Bo was home alone at her own insistence with the kids. The old succubus couldn't fault her for that. She wants to be a good, hands on mother. Aife takes pride in that since she couldn't be a mother to Bo as a baby. They'd call to check in but never dropped in first. It is something that Aife is getting used to. She still sends packages when she thinks they are about to run low. But Bo called and donated what they didn't need to expectant mothers and charities. They are all doing very well. Aife has her own house just down the street. So, they pretty much run their own neighborhood.
"Old girl, you need to do something". Albert tapped Aife's back.
"Go fight someone just for the hell of it? Okay, let's go". The Succubus laughed as she walked out of the house.
"No! The kids, Aife". Albert laughed.
"Dang...okay". Aife laughed her way back into the house. "They have to hurry and grow up."
"We have some powerful babies to help raise. Sure, we can't be there right now but they will know grandma, grandpa and uncle Stephen are just minutes away". Stephen smiled.
"Let's grill some food". Aife walked into the kitchen and pulled some food out.
Bo and Lauren
"We're not ready to make more, right?". Bo cooed. Lauren turned to Bo and the succubus held her mouth to keep from laughing. "Hey, I thought we were pretty close to making them big sisters that one night". Bo smiled as they walked through the house.
"Bo, I'm not ready again, yet". Lauren laughed.
"I'm always ready". Bo kissed Lauren's shoulder.
"I know and I'm sorry. But really, I'm not ready to carry again. I'm just getting settled into work and I'm enjoying being a mother to two". Lauren turned around to Bo.
"It's no rush, babe. I was just throwing it out there". Bo smiled.
"You've been a succubus a lot longer. You can't help your urges. I'm still fairly new at it and after being cursed without my powers for so long, I'm still thinking like a human. Slow". Lauren explained.
"I will never forgive them for that Lauren. But those that did that are dead. They will never get to see or live the happy life that we have now. They will never know Kara and Dora or any of our kids. I am always ready to have another baby with you because it will be a baby with you. It will be made and born with love. My love for you grows everyday inside of them. Inside of me. That's what a family is to me. My family is to me". Bo pulled the woman into her arms and squeezed.
"Bo, I love you too. I never knew you felt that way". Lauren squeezed her back and they just stood there holding each other.
"We're getting better. We're getting the life we have both always wanted. I don't mind days like today. It's my job and privilege as a mother. I don't mind if you want to come home early or stop working altogether. That's your job and your privilege. We are about to have so much fun raising them. We will grow with them. Love with them". Bo gently pulled back and took Lauren's hand. They walked to the nursery and peeked in. The babies were sound asleep and snoring.
"Movie time, I guess". Bo smiled as they walked downstairs and to the living room. Lauren went into the kitchen for popcorn while Bo sat to find a movie to watch. She laughed. "I never saw this coming. I never saw you coming. Although, I always saw them coming."
"I know. Who could have predicted this? I certainly didn't back in high school. Not even as a freshman." Lauren smiled as she handed Bo the bowl and she set their drinks down.
"So, science, romance, action?". Bo flipped through the channels.
Lauren laid back. "I'm not picky, today".
"Action it is". Bo smiled and leaned back on the couch. The women sat watching tv but not really watching it. After an hour they had both fallen asleep.
Lauren jumped when her phone beeped. "I'm sorry, I have to take this". She walked away from the couch.
Bo watched her go and settled back down. She stared at the ceiling. Her partner is a doctor. That is still something she can't wrap her head around. Sure, she finished high school and took a few classes but she's miles behind Lauren's brain. She shook her head and sat up straight. She wants to do more. To be more. But more what? She's not about to give up her life as a housewife. But how can she stay home and feel like she's contributing to society? She was just a bartender when Kenzi found her. Work. Fuck. Feed. Hide the dead body(ies).Repeat. She frowned and stood to get a real drink.
"Bo?". Lauren called softly.
"I'm not doing enough". Bo played with a bottle of liquor.
"What do you mean?". Lauren walked over and took the bottle out of her hand.
"You're a doctor. You can work even when you're not working. I'm not doing enough. I need to be more. I want to be more". Bo replied.
"Bo, I told you before, I don't care that you are not working. I don't care that you are not a doctor. You don't have to have my degrees to be important to us". Lauren reached for Bo's hand but she gently pulled away from the blonde.
"I need this more for me. It wasn't an act. That time in your lab watching you work. Watching you speak. I don't know, Lauren. I just need more". Bo shrugged.
"Then go get it. Whatever you need." Lauren smiled softly.
Bo walked over to the woman and held her. "I don't know what it is".
"You have forever to figure it out. We'll be right here for you. With you". Lauren smiled against Bo's shoulder.
The next morning.
Lauren opened her eyes and looked around. The sun was already out. She squeezed Bo and kissed her before climbing out of bed. She walked to the shower and stepped inside. The water felt great to her bones. She closed her eyes under the nozzle. What can she do for Bo? To help her feel better about herself. It wasn't always easy for Lauren in her younger days as Karen Beattie. She had so many questions growing up and learning about science. She used to sit and think she wouldn't succeed. But she kept at it. Her mind wouldn't let her settle for less than finding answers to her most pressing questions. She sighed as she stepped back and washed. She dressed and walked over to the bed. "Bo, I have an idea".
"Hmm?". Bo rolled over.
"Why don't you come to work with me? You can watch and maybe inspiration will hit you." Lauren sat on the bed.
Bo blinked and looked straight up. "That's not a bad idea!".
"Mind you, I can't tell you everything about every patient but you will see people coming in and out of there. From all walks of life." Lauren smiled.
"The girls. I need to be here for them". Bo rose up in the bed.
"We have babysitters. It's just for a few hours". Lauren pulled the blankets away from Bo's body so she could climb out of bed.
"A few hours does sound better." Bo ran to shower. She didn't want to make Lauren late for work. Not on her account.
The women dressed and drove the girls to their grandma, grandfather and uncle. Aife found it adorable that Bo was going to shadow Lauren for a few hours. Lauren took a moment for herself and the girls before she kissed them goodbye with Bo following her.
"So, let's get started!". Bo winked as they walked into Lauren's clinic.
Lauren laughed at Bo as they scrubbed and got ready for the first wave of patients. Bo looked adorable in her lab coat and scrubs.
"Stabbing patient". Lauren watched a man walk in holding his side and rushed over to him. Bo stood far out of the way. She followed Lauren's body as she went to work to treat the victim. It was impressive how she just knew what needed to be done just from the guy walking in. The next few hours were like that. The blonde bouncing from one med bay to another. Never losing the softness in her voice. She didn't talk to them like children, but it was comforting like she was. When a gunshot victim came in, she saw Lauren's face turn into something she hadn't seen all morning. After a few more hours, the doctor peeled off her gear and nodded for Bo to follow her.
"A cop is off the table". Bo spoke as they walked into Lauren's office.
"You want to be a cop?". Lauren asked.
"I won't be one. I saw the look on your face with the gunshot patient". Bo took a seat and some water.
"It's just senseless. But I just treat them, I don't judge". Lauren shook her head and sat back in her seat. "So, did anything interest you?".
"Not yet. Lauren, I'm sorry". Bo looked the woman dead in her eyes. She knows the woman is hurting and thinking so much with the gunshot victim. She won't judge, but she's angry nonetheless.
"It was only a suggestion. Pick a career whenever you want. It's almost lunch time, are you going to stay for that?" Lauren asked.
"I'll stay for that". Bo smiled. Lauren making time for lunch was something else they worked on in the last two months. Otherwise, she would go all day without a single bite to eat until she got home. Bo abhorred convenience store food, so she made sure Lauren had a decent dinner. The women ate out the balcony outside of Lauren's office. "I love this. I love this for you". Bo smiled as she looked around.
"It's good to get some air. To clear my head". Lauren took a drink and looked down at the traffic passing by.
"This is delicious. Do you order from this place a lot?". Bo asked.
"No. Today is the first day. I don't want to get into a dull routine of the same foods". Lauren smiled as she leaned forward to take another bite.
"Don't worry about me, Lauren. I will pick something soon". Bo winked as she took another bite.
"I'm not worried but they may start to worry". Lauren looked at Bo.
"I'm happy. I just want to work." Bo laughed.
"I think you would be good at anything". Lauren wiped her mouth with a napkin and looked at her watch.
"Ahhh. I can see I need to go". Bo stood.
"Don't rush off, Bo. I have a good while before I have to report back". Lauren waved Bo back.
"I should go. You deserve some quiet time before you go back. Seeing me will take your mind off of relaxing". Bo gathered her utensils, plate and trash.
"Bo..". Lauren spoke but the succubus was gone. She let her go. She can't hover and she can't make Bo feel what she can't feel on her own. She could use her powers, but that will never happen. She won't manipulate her like that.
Bo walked down and out of the clinic. She spoke when she was spoken to. She smiled when she was smiled at.
She pulled out of the parking lot and up to a stop light. She looked at the car ahead of her and turned to take in the sights until the light turned green. She spotted something out of the corner of her eye and turned into another parking lot. She shut the engine off and just sat there. She gave herself time to think. To breathe and finally started the engine again. "I got it". She sent in a text to the doctor.
"Yes? What is it?". Lauren asked.
"I want to be an architect". :)".
"Bo! That's wonderful! :). I will finish up here and see you at home!". Lauren replied.
Bo smiled back and set her phone down. By building on her future, she's about to build on other's futures too. She rushed to pick up Kara and Dora and took them home. She walked inside and set the carriers on the kitchen table. "Mama is getting a job. But don't worry, I will still be here. I am going to work from home. Now, I'm going to need you to be good girls as I get started on this. Your mom is at work right now, but this is about me and my job. I'm a rookie at this, so I will need to study a lot but I won't be too far from the two of you. I am going to be an architect. I know you don't know what that means yet, but I am sure you will grow to love it. It means I will design buildings and other structures. Once I build something, I will make investments in the businesses at the various locations. Tomorrow, we are all going on a little drive. We are going to map out areas that need something there. Empty lots, empty lands and whatever else we can find. Now, you are going to nap while I work a little until mom comes home". She smiled and carried them to their nursery. She pulled out a small tablet and started to draw what she could think of. Then readied to make dinner.
