Chapter 2 – A New Start

Five Years After the War Against the Dark Master

Spyro looked about the great forest and grassland bordering the Dragon Temple. He scanned for any sign of arrivals. His mind flourished with excited thoughts. Five years had passed since he defeated Malefor the Dark Master and rebuilt the Dragon Realms. Many changes had shaken his world and altered the course of history. We have renovated this temple into a school, populations are growing across the lands, and dragons from the Brisk Realm have come to our world, he thought with a nod.

At the last change, Spyro remembered first hearing about the arrivals. He and Cynder were sparring in a forest outside the Dragon Temple when Sparx had flew to them.

"Spyro, Cynder! You won't believe it," Sparx had said. "I've got news from Cyril."

"What news?" Cynder asked, panting.

"You'll love this. Might want to sit down you two."

"Okay, tell us." Spyro looked to his brother.

"In the middle of the night," Sparx began. "A portal appeared several feet from a neighboring town called Gran Haven. Over two hundred dragons appeared, young and old."

"What? Over two hundred!" Cynder had looked skeptical. Her eyes even showed disbelief. "No way."

"Believe my sassy friend, over two hundred!" The dragonfly smirked. "They have traveled to Gran Haven and settled there. They're home world was attacked by monsters and they were forced to flee. They're …starting their lives over here in the Dragon Realms."

"Incredible," Spyro breathed. "I…I'm sure we can help them."

"Oh, we will," Sparx replied with a grin. "Cyril talked to Terrador and Volteer about it. Since we are starting a school, Cyril believes it would be good to offer the young dragons an opportunity to learn at Temple Academy."

"That's wonderful!" Cynder said. "It's still a lot to take in, even the fact that our temple will be a school."

"That's not all," Sparx said. "You two will be students too."

Spyro chuckled at the memory. He felt a nudge to his side. He glanced over to see Cynder looking at him with a curious expression. Sparx hovered between him and Cynder, scratching his head with one hand, looking at the forest absentmindedly.

"Sorry…I was just remembering the first time we heard about the Brisk Realm dragons coming to our world," Spyro said. "It's still jarring and exciting."

"Yeah, but they are here now," Cynder replied. "And we'll have to get to know them and begin our classes."

"Indeed you two will," a deep voice said.

Terrador, Cyril, and Volteer had walked up the marked stone path. The Guardians took their places near Spyro, Sparx, and Cynder. Several other adult dragons came afterward. They took their places near the Guardians. Spyro recognized them. They were from the city of Gran Haven. It was one of the newer settlements founded 3 years after the War Against the Dark Master. They became staff and teachers in Temple Academy.

"And it will be wonderful," Cyril said. "Gives us a bright future to look forward to."

"It's simply marvelous, spectacular, incredible, invigorating," Volteer began.

"Yes, we get the point, Volteer. Calm yourself."

"We'll have to be prepared for any dangers and conflicts that may arise with this new era," Terrador said. "We can't let our guard down."

"Agreed," Spyro replied, turning forward.

He remained quiet as the dragons watched and waited. He was excited to meet the dragons that would come to the new school. The sun shone bright in the blue sky. A few puffy white clouds drifted amid the sky. Twenty minutes passed and then thirty. Soon, an hour went by.

After an hour and a half, dark shapes appeared within the depths of the forest. Breaking through the greenery was a crowd of young dragons. Both males and females walked across the grass toward Temple Academy. The young dragons talked and laughed and marched with enthusiasm.

Spyro watched them. He took in their faces and their appearances. These would be his classmates.

"Excellent! The young Brisk Realm dragons are coming," a male dragon said, standing behind Volteer. Spyro glanced back, recognizing the voice. It was a blue-green dragon from Gran Haven named Gus. He was the school custodian. "They need this new start."

"My wings quiver with joy!" A female dragon beside Gus said. She had light brown skin and scales and a club tipped tail. She was from Gran Haven as well. She was the school cook named Sanzal.

Spyro faced the front again as the young dragons drew closer and closer. Then, the young dragons stopped five feet away. They looked about at Spyro, Cynder, the Guardians, and the Gran Haven dragons.

Terrador stepped forward. He dipped his green head and gave a small smile. He then raised his head and looked at the Brisk Realm dragons with kindness and patience.

"Welcome, Brisk Realm dragons," he said. "The Dragon Realms are new to you, and you are still taking in the changes. But I hope you will make this world your home and enjoy it. I am Terrador, Headmaster of Temple Academy. It is a school for young dragons to learn a variety of skills, subjects, and trades."

Terrador turned and gestured to Volteer, Cyril, and the Grand Haven dragons to come forward. They stepped forward.

"These dragons will be the staff and instructors here. Learn their names and faces, youngsters. They will teach you what they know," Terrador continued.

"What about these two?" A Brisk Realm dragon stepped forward and pointed with a forepaw at Spyro and Cynder. It was a female with gray skin and brown eyes. Her forked tongue darted in and out of her mouth as she spoke.

"Oh, they are students too," Cyril said with a grin. "They are also heroes who saved this world from evils. They will be taking classes too. They are Spyro and Cynder."

The Brisk Realm female smiled at that. "Heroes? Terrific! It is an honor to meet you both."

Spyro dipped his head and chuckled. "Thanks. It's great to meet you all."

The Brisk Realm dragons whispered to one another and nodded. They glanced at Spyro and Cynder in wonder and fascination. Spyro rubbed his snout with a paw, wondering what they thought of him and Cynder being heroes.

Terrador cleared his throat. The Brisk Realm dragons stopped whispering. They looked up at the large earth dragon and waited.

"Now that you are here, let us begin with a tour. Spyro, Cynder, and Sparx will show you around the campus."

Spyro gulped. A tour? Me, Cynder, and Sparx. I'm a hero, not a tour guide!

Cynder nudged him and smiled. Sparx looked at Spyro and grinned widely.

Oh Ancestors, help me. Spyro swallowed again. Well, it's a new start. Might as well start the tour.

"Come on, everyone, follow us," Spyro said, turning and walking toward the front entrance of the main building of the school. Cynder walked beside him and the Brisk Realm dragons followed.
