Chapter 43: The Weight of Chains
Artemis stormed out of the throne room, her heart pounding with barely restrained fury. The marble halls of Olympus felt suffocating, their grandeur now a prison rather than a sanctuary. She had spent millennia walking these halls without feeling trapped, but now? Now, she felt shackled, bound by decrees and laws made by gods too blind to see what truly mattered.
The council had spoken. They had made their ruling.
But Percy was still suffering. Alone. In Tartarus.
She barely registered the sound of footsteps behind her until a voice broke the silence.
"They won't let you go to him."
Artemis stopped but did not turn. She recognized the voice—Poseidon. The one god who had dared to stand against Zeus today.
"And you?" she asked, her tone colder than she intended. "Will you stop me too?"
Poseidon sighed, stepping beside her. His face was lined with worry, the weight of the day's events pressing heavy on his shoulders. "If I could defy the council outright, I would be in Tartarus myself by now." He exhaled sharply. "But they are watching us both."
Artemis clenched her jaw. She knew that. Zeus wasn't a fool—he suspected her resolve, and he would not hesitate to act if she tried to disobey him openly.
"I won't abandon him," she said, her voice firm, unwavering.
Poseidon studied her, his sea-green eyes unreadable. "I don't doubt that." His tone softened. "I've seen the way you look at him. The way he looks at you."
Artemis stiffened, her fingers twitching. She hated how easily he saw through her. "This isn't about that."
Poseidon gave a small, knowing smile. "Isn't it?"
Artemis turned away, unwilling to entertain the conversation. It didn't matter what her feelings for Percy were. It mattered that he was alone. That he was suffering. That the gods—the very beings he had bled for—were content to let him wither in the darkest pit of existence.
Poseidon placed a hand on her shoulder, a gesture of reassurance. "I may not be able to break into Tartarus myself, but I am not powerless. Neither are you."
She turned to him, eyes sharp. "What are you saying?"
A hint of something dangerous flickered in Poseidon's gaze. "Zeus has bound you with laws, with divine decree. But there are other ways to act, other paths to take." He met her gaze fully. "Are you willing to do whatever it takes to bring him back?"
Artemis didn't hesitate. "Yes."
Poseidon's lips curved slightly, but there was no amusement in his expression—only determination. "Then we need to prepare. If Olympus won't act, we will."
Artemis nodded. She didn't care what rules she had to break, what enemies she had to make.
