Chapter 6: A Ghost From the Past.
—OoOoO—
June 14, 2018
Hokkaido Island, generally known as Hokkaido Prefecture, is one of 47 prefectures in Japan and a prefecture located at the northern of Japan. Of all the prefectures in Japan, Hokkaido is the prefecture with the lowest rainfall. The highest rainfall in Hokkaido only occurs around July to August, when the highest air temperature can reach 28ºC. The temperature is warm enough so the rain clouds do not freeze in the sky. The rest, Hokkaido is a prefecture where the cold air still feels quite stinging on the skin even in the summer.
Basically, Hokkaido is not part of Japan. Similar to the Ryukyu Kingdom—now Okinawa Prefecture—Hokkaido was a disputed land resulting from the occupation of the Tokugawa Shogunate in the mid-Edo Period. It is a disputed land because the indigenous people of Hokkaido, the Ainu People, have several times cornered the Japanese government in international trials to protect their rights to Hokkaido land.
Just like other prefectures in Japan, Hokkaido also has its own stories. However, it is history that modern-day people can only enjoy from museum exhibits or history books. One of the stories from various famous events in Hokkaido, among others, is the Battle of Hakodate.
Hakodate City is one of the cities located on the southern side of Hokkaido. The city of Hakodate overlooks the Tsugaru Strait, the strait that separates Honshu Island and Hokkaido Island.
In a secluded house on the outskirts of Hakodate—a one-room house facing the Tsuguru Strait—there is a man with long black hair sitting on a wooden chair and sipping a hot cup of coffee. The man wore a black yukata and was clad in a gold Buddha robe with a plaid pattern. The horizontal stitches on his forehead are the most eye-catching among all his appearances.
With his sharp eyes, the man continued to stare out the window. Even though his eyes seemed to be enjoying the panoramic view of the Tsuguru Strait, his mind seemed to be imagining something very far away that he couldn't even describe.
His quiet coffee drinking was slightly disturbed when his ears heard a "krieeet" sound from the door's squeaking. Without looking at the only door in the small house, the man dressed as a monk knew who had opened the door just now.
"How was your walk in this Hakodate City? Feeling nostalgic?" he asked.
There is no answer to the question. Only footsteps entering the house could be heard in his ears.
"Don't want to answer, eh? Have you been surprised by the development of Hakodate City since the last time you saw it?" added the man.
Again, the figure who had just entered the room was no reply. Instead, it walked slowly towards the only window. The sound of his footsteps was barely audible. However, every trace he left felt like had a lot of pressure.
Feeling ignored, the long-haired man put his cup of coffee on the table and began to stare at the other person who still not made a sound.
"As they say about you, you really are a very quite person, aren't you?" said the man with long hair, "Oh, I almost forgot. You are not a "person" anymore, right?"
Hearing this provocation, the figure who had been silent all this time finally turned his gaze to the human trying to talk to him.
" Can you just shut up your damn mouth, Geto Suguru?" he said in a baritone voice filled with intimidation.
"You are a calm and level-headed person, but your aura is no joke. No wonder your foes and comrades alike call you a demon when you were still alive. It is 2018 now, almost 150 years since your death, but no one expected that you would resurrect as a vengeful cursed spirit."
If it was just an ordinary person, they might instantly faint even just hearing the sound of that figure's footsteps. However, the man named Geto Suguru was far from a normal human.
Faced with a vengeful spirit about 183 centimetres tall, Geto Suguru only displayed a calm look.
Meanwhile, the creature Geto is talking to was indeed full of intimidation from his voice, appearance, and aura. When viewed from behind, that creature had the appearance of a normal human. However, the reality is far from that.
His skin was pale, like a corpse preserved under a pile of ice. His long hair that reaches the nape of his neck also looks very messy. He had no nasal bones and was only wrapped in crumpled bandages. Of the two eyelids, only one eyelid on the right is filled with eyeballs, while the other is completely empty.
"During your lifetime, this country called you a legend, but at the same time, they were afraid of you. You were born into a poor family, your existence was considered a thorn by many, but in the end, you were the best warrior who served and fell with the Tokugawa Shogunate. You are a samurai who mastered the art of the sword and modern military.
You not only instilled fear in your enemies but also your comrades. Your presence only was enough to change the entire battlefield, which is why you are considered a Demon of The Shinsengumi."
The creature was silent at Geto Suguru's words. Because he knew that man had not finished his words.
" "Even though my body rots on the island of Ezo, my spirit will guard my lord in the East", those were your last words which, ironically, cursed yourself," said Geto Suguru again, "Now, your lord is gone, and the new government has been firmly established since your death. So, what will you do next …, Hijikata Toshizo?"
Hijikata Toshizo, one of the charismatic leaders of the special police force, the Shinsengumi. He had many achievements in his life. These achievements earned him various nicknames and titles from both opponents and allies. The Wild Boy or Baragaki, Demon Vice-Commander of the Shinsengumi, Demon of the Shinsengumi, those are just a few nicknames he has.
Although the leader of the Shinsengumi is Kondo Isami, many think that the soul of the Shinsengumi itself is Hijikata Toshizo.
If you want to understand the Shinsengumi, understand Hijikata's mindset. If you want to understand a Hijikata Toshizo, understand how the Shinsengumi works. Kyokuchuu Hatto, the dharma or bushido that obeyed by the Shinsengumi was created by Hijikata. The soul of the Shinsengumi is Hijikata … and Hijikata Toshizo's soul is within the Shinsengumi.
It is not an exaggeration. The government of the Tokugawa Shogunate, which was protected by the Shinsengumi and was difficult to overthrow, finally completely collapsed after a week of Hijikata Toshizo being killed in Hakodate City.
"Cursed spirits, cursed tools, cursed objects, cursed energy, cursed techniques, and … those fucking jujutsu sorcerers. I only learned of their existence a few days before my death. That explains everything, why the weapons of the Anti-Bakufu soldiers look so much stronger than the weapons we used. I even thought the quality of their swords feels on par with the Mikazuki Munechika sword."
"Tell me, Geto Suguru," said Hijikata, glaring at Geto, "Are those damn sorcerers also involved in the Boshin War?"
Geto smiled faintly and replied, "They were not directly involved. However, the Anti-Tokugawa forces use many of their cursed weapons."
Hijikata glared at Geto with the only eyes he had. He demanded a further explanation from the man who had stitches on his forehead.
"Actually, the association doesn't want to interfere. However, after you established your base and claimed this Hakodate land as the centre of your government, the Ainu People became very angry. Before moving to Sapporo and Kamikawa City, Hakodate was the centre of the Ainu People gathering. This fact should be known by the people closest to the Shogun, including Takeaki Enomoto, who was Tokugawa's Admiral back then.
Despite knowing the facts about the sacred land of Hokkaido and the Ainu's relationship with the Japanese Jujutsu Association, Takeaki Enomoto instead brought the war to Hakodate City, where many Ainu people reside. Because of that, the association decided to interfere in your war by giving cursed weapons to the Anti-Tokugawa forces."
"The point is, those bastard sorcerers and the new government dogs are working together, aren't they?" Hijikata asked for confirmation, and Geto replied with a nod.
Although technically, the fault lies with Takeaki Enomoto, who disturbed the association and the Ainu People, this did not necessarily quell the fire of revenge and hatred within Hijikata's soul.
One of the reasons Hijikata took part in the all-out war was because he wanted to serve the Tokugawa Shogunate until the end of his life and die proudly like a samurai. However, the fact that what killed him was not a human weapon but a jujutsu sorcerer's weapon, making his death in Hakodate, not a death bestowed on his fellow warriors but a curse bestowed by sorcerers.
It seriously hurt Hijikata's pride as a samurai. If a soldier destined to die in the battlefield, they must be killed by other soldiers and die as soldiers.
"All the children of the Meiji descendants, the Japanese sorcerers, and the minions of the new government who are involved with them, I will destroy them all," said Hijikata with a very strong aura of hatred.
The aura released by Hijikata was so strong that it could swallow everything around him into an abyss of despair. The souls of the Shinsengumi members who suffered injustice in their wars seemed to dance following Hijikata's anger.
'That … is … amazing. That was not an aura of a newly born cursed spirit like himself could give off. Even among special grade cursed spirits, Hijikata's aura was extraordinary. Hijikata's wrath was the wrath of the Shinsengumi, and the humiliation the Shinsengumi received was an insult to Hijikata. The one in front of me was probably Hijikata, who rose to become a vengeful spirit. However, inside it, he also carries the grudges and contempt of the entire Shinsengumi …—no, it is possible that he also carries the grudge of all the Tokugawa vassals who were destroyed in the Boshin War.'
Despite putting on a calm face, Geto Suguru couldn't help but stir in his interest when he saw an anomaly in the form of Hijikata Toshizo as a vengeful spirit.
"If you just rush at them like that, you will be the one to be exorcised. As soon as Gojou Satoru smells your presence, you may have to reconsider your last poem again."
"Gojou Satoru?" asked Hijikata.
"The strongest in the world. As a newly awakened vengeful cursed spirit, I admit your aura of cursed energy is extraordinary. However, Gojou Satoru is beyond the common sense of the jujutsu society itself."
Seeing Hijikata, who showed no sign of replying, Geto Suguru continued his words.
"I don't need to explain. You already know, don't you, the end that awaits you if you go on a rampage without preparation?"
"Then do you have a plan?"
Geto smiled widely and replied, "Gojou Satoru is strong, but there is only one Gojou Satoru in this world. If we can distract him little by little, we can deal the finishing blow to him and seal him."
"Seal? Not killing, but sealing?" asked a disgruntled Hijikata.
"It is almost impossible to kill that person. The only being that had a chance of killing him was only Ryoumen Sukuna … and this creature was being sealed as well. So, the main plan is to seal Gojou Satoru, and then you can do whatever you want."
Despite being a cursed spirit filled with vengeance, Hijikata Toshizo didn't lose his mind. As someone who once led a large army, it was important for him to know the opponent's strength. He always puts ambition and goals forward, but it means nothing if you lose in a battle.
"As long as it makes me destroy all of the Meiji descendants, the sorcerers, and the new government minions, I will follow your plan. But, It will only until this Gojou sealed."
"A wise decision, as expected from a Hijikata Toshizo," Geto replied with a wide grin.
"And on one condition," said Hijikata, which made the grin on Geto's face fade slightly, "Izumi-no-Kami Kanaseda, bring that sword to me."
Geto smirked again and replied, "I knew you would ask that. Your sword is currently in Tokyo. Ah, Tokyo is Edo City. They changed the name. It is quite dangerous for me to wander around Tokyo right now. But don't worry, because that doesn't mean I can't give it to you."
Izumi-no-Kami Kanaseda was Hijakata's favourite sword when he was active in the military. The current location is at the Hijikata Toshizo museum in Hino City, a city in Tokyo Metropolitan Prefecture. However, just like other antiques, it is not uncommon for this sword to be exhibited in other museums in Japan.
Four days from now, June 18, 2018, Izumi-no-Kami Kanaseda will be on display at the Chiba City Folk Museum located in the Chuo area of Chiba City for a week.
—To Be Continued—
Author Note : Hello, meet me again. What do you think about this chapter? Finally, I caught my Indonesian version.
As I said in the author's note yesterday. There will be a quite huge time skip from the previous chapter. Chapter 5 is still in the time setting around early April, while this chapter is in mid-June. About two months skip between chapter 5 and chapter 6.
That means the timeline of this fic is now starting to be the same as the initial timeline of the kaisen jujutsu manga begininning or when Fushiguro went to Sendai to look for Sukuna's finger. Well, the exact date for Fushiguro to Sendai was not stated. But it's probably around the end of June or at least the 20s of June. Because in the Cursed Womb's Earthly Existence arc (chapter 6), it is stated that the time setting is already in July.
For Hachiman Fan, thank you to tell me about some errors. But sorry, I can't find a single error you were mentioned about. I'll really appreciate if you (or maybe someone else) can point it out. Thank you very much
Okay, that's all from me. How do you feel about this chapter? And thank you to everyone who has read and reviewed this chapter. Please leave your review for this chapter because your review is my encouragement. See you in the next chapter and stay safe.
