While we were talking, Aqua finally made it back to us before we went up to the second floor.

We advanced through the second floor just as easily as the first, however, when we encountered some ghouls, I made the group stop.

I shrugged at Mitsurugi.

Aqua sneered at me.

Aqua of all people had no right to say that to me.

We kept moving forward once I made the caltrops, until we ended up near the living area of the Kobolds.

Chris said, holding her arm out in front of Darkness.

I said, thinking about how they only had a simple alarm system before.

"Kobold Heroes also raise the abilities of their subordinates. Those Kobolds have leveled in lots of ways."

Chris said, as we advanced cautiously forward, relying on Chris's [Trap Detection]. I also had the skill, but she put more points into hers. I made sure to keep an eye out in case she missed something, though.

Moving past the traps, we eventually reached the Kobold living area. My [Enemy Detection] alerted me about several Kobolds who were watching us. Soon, the scouts rang the alarm.

We equipped our weapons as dozens of trap doors opened before us. There were new trap doors in addition to the old ones. The number of Kobolds increased from the last time, meaning that the Kobold Hero must have gathered forces from all the Kobolds living on this floor. The Kobold community we saw must have been one of many.

"T-There's a lot of them…"

Aqua said worriedly, backing away from us.

"Senpai, you're really early today! You almost beat me to school!"

I got startled by Rin, who called me a 'cheater' out of nowhere.

"A-Ah… Sorry, I ended up waking up early."

"Oh? Did something good happen?"

If it wasn't for her innocent smile, I would have thought that she somehow knew what I did with Aqua last night.

With all the commotion about the Kobolds, I forgot that we usually had a soccer game on Thursdays. It took me by surprise when the coach brought us to the pitch and the other school's team was there, practicing for the match.

"...Satou, don't tell me you forgot there's a game today."

Mitsurugi said, looking at me in disappointment.

"I actually died yesterday. Is it that weird that this ultimately meaningless high school soccer game is in the back of my mind?"

"When you put it that way… Yeah, that makes sense."

Still, I did make it my goal to put my all into soccer. All that hard work would go to waste if I didn't try here, just because I died for a little bit.

Our team wasn't particularly strong, but we had been putting on a string of victories of late. This match was apparently pretty important, since winning would qualify us for nationals.

The couch stood before us, looking even more emotional and impassioned than before.

"If we win this… Our goal of reaching the nationals won't become a mere pipe dream anymore! Put your all into this game!"

I would have been inspired by the passion behind his speech, if he wasn't always like this, even during practice. I swear he cried everyday. It was surprising he didn't suffer from dehydration, with how much he cried.

The opponents were formidable. They belonged to a youth club of an actual Japan pro team. It was a bit surreal, seeing our opponents wearing uniforms that I occasionally saw on TV.

My teammates were nervous, showing a bunch of mistakes during our pre-game passing drill.

"...What's everyone so scared about?"

I said, when I noticed their nervous expressions.

"I-I mean… These guys are from a youth club. They're on a different level from anyone else we faced."

I was just decapitated by a Kobold and watched my corpse from a heavenly realm. These guys didn't seem all that intimidating to me, compared to that.

"They're not such a big deal."

"W-Wow! You're so fearless, Satou!"

"It actually makes me feel better… Knowing our midfielder doesn't feel any fear…"

I wasn't trying to inspire them or anything, but apparently that motivated them, somehow.

We lined up with the youth club. They had an air of confidence about them, which was instilled by their club since they were young. They didn't even seem to consider the possibility that they'd lose.

"Um… Let's have a good game."

Their captain said, holding out his hand as if he was bored and already thinking about the next game.

Mitsurugi smiled and shook it.

"Yeah, let's have a fun game!"

He didn't show it, but I'd been around Mitsurugi enough to know he was a bit irked by the opposing captain's attitude.

The match started with the opposing team starting with the ball.

They might be something like semi-pros, but they were still ordinary people.

It was an easy matter to take the ball from them after using [Lurk] on myself.

"...?! Where did that guy come from?!"

"Get that #7!"

They collapsed on me, which was exactly what I wanted.

I sent a through pass to Mitsurugi, all my hard work in practice translating to real results, as the pass felt smooth and not awkward at all. I didn't even have to think all that much about it, relying on muscle memory and instinct.

Mitsurugi controlled the ball and only had the defenders and the goalkeeper to beat. Since he had momentum on his side, he was able to outpace the defenders, leaving him in a 1v1 against the goalkeeper. He shot it past the keeper with a clinical finish with his right foot.

It was our tried and true tactic of surprising the other team with a fast first goal.

However, our opponents were at a higher level than our previous competitors.

With a series of short, one-touch passes, they were able to work up an offensive that eventually got them a goal soon after ours.

"...They're really good."

Mitsurugi said, after he encouraged our defenders, who couldn't do anything about the attack.

"Which is why I'm gonna keep using skills."

"...You know, Satou, they're good because they worked hard to hone their talents."

"And I'm an unrecognized soldier protecting my country, and this world, and I actually died the other day. In terms of hard work and sacrifice, I deserve this win more than anyone."

"I-It's hard to argue with that."

I used the same tactic I used for the other game, mimicking the voices of the opposing team. In this way, I sowed disorder into their ranks. This tactic works especially well against organized teams with excellent teamwork, as they recognize each other's voices right away and don't hesitate to make a pass.

It didn't take long until I intercepted a ball and sent another through pass to Mitsurugi. This time, the defense was expecting him, but I just used [Lurk] to get into an open position. Mitsurugi passed the ball to me and I immediately sent it back to him, with a one-two pass.

The keeper dove early, but Mitsurugi beat him with a flick, sending the ball over the keeper's head and into the goal.

By this point, the youth club got desperate and their morale was low. The thing with youth clubs was that they were all competing with each other for spots in the higher levels. That meant that they viewed their teammates as rivals.

Once they started blaming each other for the missed passes, their excellent teamwork dissipated. We were able to take advantage of that and held onto our lead until the end of the game.

One of the youth club players actually got a red card and got kicked out because they tried a dangerous tackle against me. I moved out of the way in time because my [Enemy Detection] alerted me, though.

"You boys did it! I'm so proud of you!"

The coach was in tears again as we qualified for the nationals. By the end of it, I felt like I was more soaked in his tears than my own sweat.

"Kyaa! Kazuma-san, you were so cool out there!"

Interestingly, I managed to gain a lot of female fans from that game. I guess winning a national qualifying game gives you a lot of female attention.

Part 7

The fight with the Kobold Hero made me realize that I needed to get stronger. Going to the gym and trying my best on soccer gave me good stats, but like Vanir said, I was sorely lacking in real combat experience.

I went to the dungeon after the soccer match. There was work available that day, but I figured that I was pretty set on money, anyway. Instead, I wanted to focus on the dungeon, most of all, finishing that quest for defeating the floor boss.

Those 'Random Loot Boxes' gave me a lot of good rewards so far. Since they were pretty rare, I had to take every opportunity to get one whenever I could.

Before I could reach the second floor boss, I had to go through the monsters along the way. I used Chunchunmaru, along with [Drain Touch], to defeat the weak monsters. Not only did [Drain Touch] damage them, it also allowed me to recover my stamina.

Whenever my sword got too damaged, I repaired it with [Smithing]. It felt good to finally develop a routine, instead of trying my best just to survive in the dungeon. That didn't mean that I could afford to take it easy, though, or else I might just die again.

I got a total of 25 exp from dealing with weaklings.

About midway through the second floor, [Enemy Detection] alerted me of a pretty strong enemy ahead.

Not taking any chances, I used [Lurk] on myself.

"Peek…"

I glanced around the corner of the hallway where I felt the presence, but I didn't see anything there. Still, [Enemy Detection] told me that there were clearly enemies ahead. That meant that they were either hiding or invisible.

"[Freeze], [Wind Breath]..."

I sent a cold gust of wind to the suspiciously empty hallway. The rocks on the walls started to move, as if they were shivering from the cold. I didn't waste time and took out my bow, shooting at one of the shifting areas of rock.

"Graaaak!"

The piece of 'rock' fell down, revealing that it was a chameleon-like creature.

I used [Lore Reading] on it.

Rock Lizard

It is like a chameleon, however, it can only take on one false appearance, which is a rock. It has a sturdy body and uses its tail as a heavy whip. One hit is enough to kill weaker foes, especially if they are caught off guard.

What a frightening creature.

I used [Enemy Reading] on the lizards. It had +4 armor. Furthermore, it was pretty bulky HP wise, with 20 HP each. There were about six of them.

My bow did 8 damage, which meant that I'd have to shoot it about five times in order to kill it.

Before I could come up with a proper plan, the lizards started to attack me. They could crawl on the roof, but they weren't too fast. It gave me time to turn the environment to my favor.

"[Create Water]! [Freeze]!"

I froze places they were walking on, making the lizards drop one-by-one.

It took them a while to get back on their feet, as they kept slipping. In the meantime, I was able to snipe down two of them, peppering them with ten arrows.

If I didn't figure out I could keep absorbing mana from the dungeon with [Drain Touch], I would have been in trouble. I repeated the pattern of making them slip by freezing the areas they were walking on. Then I'd keep shooting and kiting.

It took a while, but I was able to eliminate all of the lizards.

"Congratulations, Kazuma-san! You leveled up! You are now Level 8!"
