Here is the next part. Once again, I own nothing belonging to Atlantis or Percy Jackson. Only my OCs whom I also give credit to others for suggesting. Enjoy the chapter.
We find the Truth, Sort of Part Two:
(Phoebe's Point of View)
There was a forest we had to cross before reaching the desert plains to continue to Hades's palace. But the moment we entered, we were greeted by mist flooding the trees and ash raining on our heads.
"This is mega creepy," I shivered. And I thought Medusa's lair was spooky enough.
"How are we going to find the others in this fog?" Grover asked. We could barely see ten feet of what lay ahead of us, except more trees.
"Let's not panic," Annabeth said. "We just have to stick together and keep going forward. Maybe we'll find them once we reach the other side of the forest,".
I agreed with her. "It's our best bet. With any luck, they'll head to the other side as well,".
(Jason's Point of View)
The forest was ahead of us, but we had to cross a barrier of misty cloud. "Another bank of fog?" Cody groaned.
"We have to cross it to find the others," I said, trying to walk forward.
"Wait," Riya stopped me. She glanced wearily at the fog. It was too white, and it was giving off a strange odour. "There's something about this fog,".
"Riya, we have to cross through," I said. "It's the only way to get to the others,".
"Whatever you do, don't breathe in the fog. Hold your breath." Riya inhaled deeply and marched on.
I held my hand out. "Take my hand, Cody,".
He clasped it. "Let's go,". We inhaled deeply and went straight into the fog. We lost sight of Riya. Just keep walking forward. I told myself. We kept on walking forward, but we couldn't hold it in. Cody's cheeks puff out. He exhaled. The fog whiffed up his nostrils. "I can't take it anymore,".
"Don't breathe it in!" I shouted.
"Now you're breathing it in!".
I realised I had. In a flash of light, Cody was gone. It was dark all around me. Then the fog appeared again, morphing into colours and shapes. I found myself in an ancient Greek room full of rich furniture.
It was the man from the Arch and Waterland. He was cloaked. He looked younger. And he was tiptoeing towards a wooden crib with a child inside. "You're coming with me, little prince." he pulled out a sack. "You have something which rightfully belongs to me!".
The baby was woken up. It cried, and it was swiped from its cradle.
"Jason!" cried a loud voice. I turned my head and saw a man with dark hair and silver eyes like mine rush into the room. He wore royal blue. "Put my son down, Pirius!".
"Move or the child get it!". The man who was called Pirius held a knife right in front of the baby's face.
The man shivered. "Why are you doing this?".
"He has something that rightfully belongs to me,".
The father knew what he meant. "He's just a child! He hasn't taken anything from you!".
"Poseidon gave the gift that should have been mine,".
"My son was dying. He saved his life,".
"What difference would that have made? Jason belongs with me now. I am descended from gods. He is descended from mortals. His gift should have been mine! And now I am here to reclaim it!".
"No!" shouted the man who was my father.
Suddenly, my head went whooshing, and I found myself back in the bank of white fog, which was starting to clear. I felt like throwing up. But I swallowed it down. Fighting my tears, I cried out: "Cody! Riya! Anybody here?!". Cody's screams filled my ears. "I'm coming Cody! Hang in there!". The fog changed around me, and I was surrounded by forests. Monsters of all sorts were chasing a child, his father struggling to protect him. I recognised the child whom Arthur and I had found all those years ago.
The older version of Cody was watching it, unable to turn away. He watched the little version of him run off after his father was killed, his body left to rot in the grass. "Dad!".
Quickly, I rushed to him "Cody, we gotta go!".
"But my dad!".
"It's not real. None of it is real! It's the fog!" I struggled to pull him, but then I saw Riya appear and help me drag him and then thud! We fell to the ground on the other side of the fog, breathing heavily. We turned back and saw the fog clouds drifting away. Riya panted heavily. "Are you guys okay?".
I didn't want to talk about it. Cody was still crying. I embraced him tightly. "It was horrible," he sniffled.
"I know," I cried a little. "But it's over now. We're out of the fog. Listen to me, Cody. What happened that day was not your fault,".
"You think that makes me feel any better?!" he bawled out miserably. "It's my fault he's dead."
"Kid, I saw what happened." Riya rubbed his back. "Your dad sacrificed himself to keep you safe, and that's what he did. This is what the fog does." She glanced back as it faded away. "It makes you see your most horrifying memories to scare you or drive you insane". My body quivered. My heart tied itself in a knot. And my tears fell. She saw them. "Jason, what did you see?".
Before I could answer, we heard a loud howl. We turned back and saw Cerebus on the top of the wall. He was coming for us.
"Run!" I shouted. We fled into the forest, hoping to find the others.
(Phoebe's Point of View)
"This forest goes on forever," I whined. "When are we gonna find the other side?". I just turned my head forward again when a white face appeared into view. I jumped back in fright.
"Phoebe, Phoebe, it's okay," Grover soothed. The white face was still in front of us. It towered over us, stuck to a clothed lifeless body, with fabric covering its feet. There were more of them everywhere.
"Where are we?" I wondered.
Annabeth knelt on the soil and lifted the helms of the grey fabric. There were roots instead of feet. "This is Asphodel. Souls here are bound by regret. Haunted by choices they made in life or were never made,".
"That's horrible." I couldn't hold back my distress for these poor souls. "And they can never move on,".
"They're like this forever," Annabeth said sadly.
The moment she spoke that, another familiar echoed in our ears. "I can tell you three who deserves to be imprisoned in such a way,".
I drew out Riptide; Annabeth drew out her dagger. Faces appeared from behind the trees a few trees away; the same man from the Arch and Waterland glared darkly at us.
"Don't you ever give up?" Annabeth cursed.
"Not when I comes to your friend,".
"We'll never tell you where Jason is!" I shouted.
"You don't need to. I'll know he's look for you, so I'll just keep surrounded until he does,".
"Who are you?" Grover demanded.
The man circled us, making sure his men kept their firm eyes on us. "You guys are not the only half-bloods."
I felt like I couldn't breathe. "You're a half-blood?".
"Your father and his family have kept a great many secrets from you and your friends. and like all of you, we have been abandoned, neglected, betrayed ….,".
"There are other half-bloods?" Grover breathed.
"You mean other than your little camp, you tell me,". Our stalker answered back with his sinister eyes and unemotional face. I glimpsed again at all his crew, eying us dangerously with sharp weapons. And by the looks on their faces, I could see hatred, loathing …
"Wait. How do you know about our camp?" Annabeth asked, disturbing my thoughts.
"I know a great many things, daughter of Athena. I have often wondered why this world was so important that the gods chose to abandon us on our own and have you lot instead. But what difference does it make? Gods are all the same. They don't care about us. To them, we're just like the humans, meant to serve them without any regard to our own wants and needs,".
"That's a lie." Annabeth's voice was hesitant.
"Oh really," the man mocked cruelly. "Then why did your mother allow monsters into the Arch knowing you were inside it?".
"You leave her be," I warned. "Thank so much for the nice speech about parental abandonment, but it doesn't explain what you want with Jason,".
"You have no idea how truly powerful he is. He has a power that should have belonged to me a long time ago."
"You're lying,". Annabeth spat again. "He has nothing that belongs to you,".
"I gain nothing from lying. He is more powerful than even all of you together. and I'm going to take that power back. And with it, my friends and I finally avenge what the gods did to us,".
"You'll have to kill us first to him," I dared.
Suddenly, there was a booming growling. Cerebus was closing in on the forest. The half-bloods were distracted. "Run!" Grover shouted. We shot off.
"Get them!".
(Jason's Point of View)
Cerebus was closing in on us. "Doesn't he ever give up!" I shouted.
Riya sent me an 'Are-you-stupid? Look. "He's the guard-dog of the Underworld! Since when would he give up?!"
"Less shouting! More running!" Cody was running out of breath.
"Use your bow!".
"I can't get a clear shot if it's running!".
Quickly, I pulled them behind some trees, and we struggled to keep out of sight. "Any chance you've got another ball?" I asked Cody.
"Nope. That was Akeda's only ball toy we used up,".
Riya fumed silently through her nostrils. "I'll distract it. You guys go,".
"No. We're not leaving you,". I said.
"It's your only chance, guys,". She pulled out a pearl. "This pearl will take me safety,". There was no stopping her as she came out of her hiding place and got the three-headed dog's attention again. We watched as she sprinted off into the fog, the dog pursuing her again.
"We have to go, Jason. She'll be okay," Cody said sadly. "Come on," he pulled me away. We dashed off further into the forest, hoping to find the others.
(Phoebe's Point of View)
The half-blood men kept pursuing us. "How many friends does this guy have?" Grover complained whilst running.
"He had more friends that I accounted him for," I panted. We had managed to lose them in the fog for a bit. We hid behind the large tree-like bodies of the trapped souls; they stepped carefully. Luckily, as we were lighter and younger, our footprints or tracks couldn't be traced. Annabeth peered around.
"We can't keep this up," Grover panted. "There's too many,".
"We're never gonna find the bolt or my mother if they keep chasing us." I held up my sword. I was going to do it. For her sake and Jason's.
"I'll keep them distracted." Annabeth pulled out her cap.
"No," I begged.
"It's our only chance, Phoebe. You've led this quest so you have to be the one to complete it. Whatever happens to me, promise me you'll protect Jason,".
I couldn't leave her. "Annabeth …".
"Swear it," she begged angrily.
I cried a little. "I can't do this. I'm not brave,".
"Yes, you are." Annabeth's words were encouraging. "And you're stronger than you think. You got us this far, and now you have to keep going,". She held up the pearl. "I trust your dad. Please trust him. For me,".
I embraced her. "I won't let you down,".
She hugged me back. "Be careful, both of you,". She donned her cap and disappeared. Grover pulled me close to him as we heard one of our seekers stepping closer to us. He held me protectively.
"There she is!". Another shouted. We heard their footsteps retreating, Annabeth leading them away.
Grover took my hand. "She'll be okay. Now let's go,". We fled as fast as our legs could carry us.
(Jason's Point of View)
Cody and I escaped into the desert, falling off her feet onto the sand. I breathed out for dear life. I couldn't take it anymore. I had had enough running for one day. "We made it," I panted.
"I hope the others made it." Cody sat up, rubbing his eyes.
"Me too." I rubbed my eyes, threatening to rain tears again. I couldn't stop myself.
Cody shifted a little closer to me, but I didn't want to look at him. "Jason, what did you see in the fog?".
"Pirius,".
"What?".
"The man at the Arch and Waterland who tried to kidnap me, his name's Pirius,".
"How can he be in your memories?".
"I was in an ancient Greek room. He was there standing over me in a crib. Then there was a man crying out for me. I think I saw my birth dad,".
"Oh, Jase," Cody touched my shoulder. "We're safe now. He can't harm you or any of us,".
Right after he spoke, we heard sand shifting and saw Phoebe falling onto her knees on the sand. "Phoebe," I rushed over and fell before her. "Are you okay?".
"So tried … running," she panted.
"Thank goodness you guys found us." Cody tended to Grover.
But our sister was missing. "Where's Annabeth?". I panicked.
"The same man from before followed us into the Underworld," Phoebe panted. I knew someone was behind me. How could I have been so stupid? "He came back with more allies. They were half-bloods,".
"What?" Cody asked.
"They were half-bloods," Grover clarified.
"Where's Annabeth?" I shouted.
"She drew them away,". Phoebe answered.
"You left her?" I accused her heatedly.
Grover defended her. "Jason, she did it so we could escape and get to you. Phoebe was going to do it herself, but Annabeth chose to go instead. It was not her fault,".
Phoebe, unoffended by my accusation, took my hand. "She made me promise to protect you, and that's what I'm gonna do,".
"Where's Riya?" Grover asked.
"She drew Cerebus away," Cody said. "Now, we must keep going, or it was all in vain. It won't be long before Pirius tracks us down again,". We stood up and began moving again, but I didn't take another step. I turned my head and looked back towards the forests and Hades's wall. Annabeth and Riya were back there, distracting Cerebus, Pirius and his men. I couldn't go on. I couldn't leave my beloved sister, who has always been there with me, aside from Luke, for years.
"Jason," Phoebe walked to me. "She's going to be fine,".
The moment she said that, we heard a pair of thundering booms! Two white booms flashed in the distance behind us. "They made it." I could breathe. Annabeth was safe.
"Thank the gods," Phoebe cheered. "Now we must move before they catch us. I promise you, Jason, we'll see Annabeth again,".
"I know. I'm sorry I accused you …".
"It's alright,". She forgave me instantly. "I would have reacted the same way, too,".
(Phoebe's Point of View)
We trekked across the hilly desert mounds, not stopping for a single moment to rest. We could not avoid the half-blood Pirius to catch up to us. I was not going to let Annabeth down.
"Gosh! Just much farther do we have to walk?!" Cody complained. "It would be so much easier if Tuastos could give us a lift!".
"We'll get there when we get there," Grover panted.
"We can't slow down," I panted. No matter how much we want. We sipped our water and chewed on biscuits and pieces of candy to boost our energy.
As we walked, Grover and I both noticed that Cody and Jason were both really quiet. And it wasn't just about Annabeth and Riya. We exchanged glances and nodded. Grover moved to our youngest teammate. I talked to Jason.
"Jason, you and Cody have been so quiet,".
"We walked through this fog bank and it made us see some our most horrifying memories. And Cody saw his dad,".
"What happened to him?"
"Cody and his dad, Samuel Stephens, were out on a camping trip in California. But then one day, they were attacked by angry monsters. Cody got scared, so his father, a Seer, distracted them to give his son time to escape,".
"And Cody blames himself for what happened."
"Yes. Artemis sent Tuastos and Akeda to save him, but they were too late to save his dad. It wasn't long before they reached Long Island and Arthur and I found them,".
"He's so lucky to have to you, Annabeth and Luke,".
Jason smiled a little, but he sniffled, failing to hide his wet eyes and slumped shoulders. "What did you see in the mist?".
"It was Pirius. He tried to kidnap me when I was a baby. And then I think I saw my dad … my birth dad. He was a king,". He was becoming petrified with fear, pale as a ghost. He touched his charm. "I saw my necklace round him,".
All these years, he had wanted to find out who he was, but now it was becoming too unbearable for him to deal with. "Hey, Grover! Where are you going?" Cody's screams drew our attention. Grover was fluttering away.
"It's the shoes! I can't control them!" my best friend screamed.
"Grover!" We chased after him. The shoes carried him over and down a mound, but the moment I reached the top, I saw a giant hole in the ground, about a mile long, and it looked so deep.
"Phoebe!" Grover's screams drew my attention again. I tripped down the mound and grabbed his hand. The shoes pulled us down towards the pit. I pulled out Riptide and drove into the sand, but still, the shoes pulled us down.
"Phoebe! / Grover!" Cody and Jason shouted behind us. I lost my grip on my blade, and Grover and I were pulled over the edge.
"No!" Cody's grabbed my hand but slip!
"Nooo!" Jason's screams followed us over the edge of the pit.
And that's the second part done. I am currently working on the third part now. I hope you all enjoyed it. The man hunting Jason down is called Pilius , and he tried to kidnap JAson when he was an infant. How frightening this must be for him.
