Peter's pov
Covey and I were on a picnic date in no other place than Central Park. It was a perfect sunny day outside, but with a gentle yet commanding enough breeze to make it the perfect picnic weather. People were jogging in the distance, some walking their dogs. It was a Sunday, and while I had attended the service in the morning, I had my afternoon free to treat my girl to our date. Besides, she more than deserved it. Not only was she perfect in my eyes, but she forgave my well-intended mistakes. Breaking up with Gen? Definitely the right call. But looking back, her room had not been the right venue. I just hadn't wanted to break up with her in public, in the lobby of the ski resort. But everyone was asleep, the hallway would have been enough. And I had stayed over because to me, at the time, I hadn't seen it as something that mattered. I was dog tired from my wonderful time with Lara Jean, I had no romantic feelings for Gen, so to me, it was nothing. Two humans asleep in the same square footage space. But again, I had hurt Lara Jean and given Gen material to use to make my Covey feel bad. At least it was all behind us now. Besides, I was also treating LJ to some time alone to calm her down, because tonight was THE night. She was finally coming to my Mom's childhood home for Sunday Dinner. I just prayed my family would behave... They have an interesting way of greeting newcomers.
As she dug in to some of the Korean food she had made to bring to the picnic, LJ asked, knowing me al too well for me to try and hide something from her
"What's on your mind, baby?"
I sighed
"Dinner."
She laughed, the melodious sound being music to my ears
"Already thinking about the next meal. Classic."
She had said that to try to lighten my mood, she knew why I was a bit nervous. She was too, but she was trying so hard not to show it... I decided to play along, shrugging
"Well, I AM an athlete. We need fuel."
We both laughed a bit, then I sighed, grabbing her hand and playing with her fingers, which soon squeezed mine in return as I spoke
" I just don't want them to scare you off. I almost lost your company once."
My family wasn't mean, but they could be intimidating like no one else I've ever known in my life. And they had gotten a lot more overprotective over me after Gen dumped me before the fake dating, and when LJ temporarily "dumped" me. I mean, I don't know if it counts as dumping if we were not actually together, but my feelings and my heartbreak were real. More real than anything with Gen had ever been.
LJ smiled, kissing my cheek
"You won't lose me. If they can accept and love a firefighter and an ADA, they'll love me. And I'll love them right back. They're the reason I get to belong with you."
I now she had said that due to knowing my desire to belong with someone instead of to someone. The way she declared she felt the same had been too sweet. I leaned over and kissed her, my voice dropping to a husky low tone as I delivered a line from that fateful night
"There's no one like you, Covey."
She smiled against my embrace
"We will always belong with each other, Peter K."
And with that declaration, we continued to enjoy the rest of our time together on our date before we were to head over to my Grandfather's house. We had been allowed to go by ourselves, and Mom drove herself and Nicky.
Jamie's pov
(A/N: This is the day before Peter and LJ's picnic. The chap might seem out of order, but for a purpose)
I was enjoying what could only be described as a beautiful, heavenly morning with my wife. It was a Saturday, and a day we both had off from work. Those were few and far between, and we made the most of every single one of them. I was brought out of my thoughts when I realized Eddie was no longer in bed with me, and when I heard a loud noise that brought pain to my chest. Eddie was sick in the bathroom. Come to think of it, she had been getting sick a lot lately, like, a lot. That was not like her, not at all. I felt my stomach sink to the floor as worry hit me like a ton of bricks.
Without a second thought, I ran into the bathroom and pulled her beautiful golden tresses away from her face, most importantly her mouth, and rubbed circles on her back as she emptied the contents of her stomach into the toilet bowl, practically nonstop
"Did you and Maya go to any questionable restaurants during your meal break on tour lately? Could this be a bug?"
She shook her head
"You know me. I know my food. I would never eat somewhere that would leave me for dead like this."
I ran the past couple of days through my mind, pausing on the night of our anniversary, not too long ago.
"Could this be a symptom of pregnancy? A-are you late?"
Though taking a moment to enjoy my flustered face as I managed to spit out the question, she soon paused to contemplate, and her concentrated pout was somehow cute and hot at the same time. She suddenly spoke, a small ghost of a smile appearing on her lips
"I need a pregnancy test."
I was quick to go to the store and get her one, adrenaline and possibilities coursing through my veins.
Joe's pov
Today was Sunday, and the past week had been amazing. There was no other word to describe it, if I were to be honest. A million thoughts were racing through my mind at the moment, each one better than the last, save for a few worried thoughts. I had recently been brought to a space on Cloud 9 and had no intentions of coming down whatsoever. I just did not have a reason to come down from cloud 9, and, at the same time, too many reasons to stay there. And I mean MANY reasons. On all fronts. Life at work was going great, helping the people of New York City, my family was great and I was going to see them in a few hours for church, then see them again tonight for Sunday Dinner.
Laurie's family was also doing well, with her brother getting engaged. So things have really been going great lately as far as I am concerned. Laurie's work has slowed down a bit, which is always a good thing when you deal with emergencies that almost always involve people getting drastically hurt, or even killed. She also has been on desk duty for the last few weeks. It was safer. Bringing me out of my thoughts, she curled up to me, a half teasing tone overtaking her voice
"What's that smile?"
I kissed her
"You know what it is"
She nodded, then got up, which resulted in a whiny complain emerging from my lips. She turned to me
"Sorry, Joey; but we're gonna be late for mass if we don't start getting ready."
Knowing she was right, I began to get ready as well, excited for family dinner tonight.
3rd person pov
After mass, the whole Reagan clan, with the addition of Peter's girlfriend Lara Jean, gathered at the Reagan Homestead for their weekly family dinners. Lara Jean found herself clutching Peter's hand a little tighter, hiding half of her body behind the boy. It was not a hard feat. She was tiny, he was broadened with muscle. Peter snaked an arm around her waist
"It's ok, Covey. Relax, I'll be with you the whole time. They'll love you."
That seemed to calm her down enough until the famous law enforcement family began to introduce themselves. Thankfully, Pop was the first in line
"Lara Jean, what a pleasure to finally meet you. I've heard so much about you, all great things. I'm Henry. You can call me that, or Pop. Whichever you'd prefer."
Peter's pov
Pop being Pop had also brought her into a hug, same as when Sean first brought cousin Joe over for dinner. In fact, save for embarrassing me by revealing couldn't shut up about her, I'm pretty sure the words my great-grandfather offered my girlfriend were the same as he had to my cousin. My girlfriend hugged him
"Very nice to meet you as well" she paused, then spoke again "Pop".
Her calling him that and him welcoming her into the family made me smile, though I still feared the tradition would arise... Grandpa welcomed her after Pop
"Very nice to met you, Lara Jean. I'm Frank or Grandpa, if you'd like."
My girl smiled at him and shook his hand, causing Grandpa to notice the platter and the dish she had brought. LJ had not let up on wanting to contribute the dinner, and , though I had not wanted to stress her, I did not hold up that much of a fight. I mean, she's better than most professional cookers and bakers, it was tempting. I did help her cook, though. And taste, of course."
Grandpa spoke again
"Peter, relieve Lara Jean from her load and take these platters to the kitchen, please."
I quickly obeyed, and caught LJ explaining what those were on my way back
"I made us all salted caramel cupcakes and Hoedeokk. It's a popular street food in Korea, like a sweeter pancake. I wanted to bring something to the table since you have been so generous in inviting me, plus I love to cook and bake."
They thanked her for her contributions, but once again made sure she knew she was under no obligation to bring anything, that she was the guest. My Covey smiled
"Thank you. But I did not feel obligated at all, don't worry."
Jack and Sean introduced themselves, and that went well, thankfully. My Mom and sister greeted her with hugs and smiles, having already met her when I brought LJ to the house. Joe spoke next
"I'm Joe and this is my wife Laurie. Nice to meet you, LJ."
My girl smiled, shaking his hand and giving Laurie a side hug
"Nice to meet you both as well."
Next in line were Aunt Eddie and Uncle Jamie. They both hugged her, and, busting my chops, Jamie spoke
"Don't let him get you into too much trouble, LJ. He loves pulling pranks, especially if he can rope someone into doing it with him."
Blushing as many instances ran through my mind, I whined
"Uncle Ja-mie!"
My Uncle smirked
"Just kidding, I just wanted to hear him do that."
We all laughed at that, even me. Then Uncle Danny came over and gave me a noogie after grabbing me in a headlock. Once I got him off me, both laughing, he tousled my hair then turned to LJ, shaking her hand
"Hi. I'm Danny. Nice to finally meet you."
LJ smiled
"You as well, I've heard stories."
He smiled
"All good, I hope?"
Her smile reached her beautiful eyes
"Every last one."
Before my family could enact anything resembling their usual rituals with newcomers, the food was brought to the table and I was asked to say grace. Once that was done, Joe, Laurie, Aunt Eddie and Uncle Jamie were all beaming and spoke as one
"We have news!"
Then the overlappings of "You go first" and "No, you" began, until Joe ceded
"Let's let them go first."
Nodding in thanks, Uncle Jamie spoke
"Eddie and I have a surprise... we found out yesterday that we're going to be parents!"
FI-NAL-LY. Cheers errupted across the room and everyone went to them to hug and congratulate them. I beat my Mom and sister to the question
"How far along are you?"
My aunt replied with a smile
"2 months. Just got one more month of morning sickness to go, hopefully. And I'm being placed on modified assignment, aka desk duty soon. Not so fun."
She had finished explaining modified assignment with a small pout. She absolutely loved her baby, but she hated riding the desk. Uncle Jamie spoke next
"So, Joe, Laurie. What's your news?"
They were still smiling, and now they were practically laughing
"That's what we were gonna say, actually. But I'm four months along. We found out next week. It's funny, I'm barely showing, but the doctor said there was nothing to suggest developmental problems."
Once again cheers and hugs went around the room, then it struck me. Their baby, or babies, would be the founding members of the FIFTH generation of Reagans. Grandpa would become a great-grandpa, and Pop a great-great-grandpa. Whoa. That realization seemed to hit everyone else too, and everyone was overjoyed. It was all good and dandy until I heard my Uncle Danny speak
"I think it's time to call a Code Blue."
Oh no, this was the tradition I was trying to avoid... LJ, being her curious self, spoke up
" What's a Code Blue? Something involving the NYPD?"
Pop smiled
"It means it's time to talk about the wedding. Your wedding."
Her eyes just about fell from their sockets. We're SIXTEEN!"
She spoke
"Aren't Peter and I rather young for this?"
Uncle Danny smiled
"Never too young to plan."
Mom spoke
"I'll loan you my wedding gown, I was the third to wear it. It was my Grandma Betty's, then my Mom wore it, then I did. Come to think of it, didn't Linda wear it, Danny?"
He nodded
"Yep. Oh, and the location. St. Angelos, we go there every Sunday, a lot of us got married there..."
They went on and on until once shy little LJ spoke her mind
"Look. I feel like we are too young for this right now, but we do toss ideas around sometimes. Nothing concrete, because we are way too young. I appreciate the effort, I do, but our wedding will be our wedding when the time comes. Your support is the best contribution you can add."
Applause scattered around the room as confusion fell on LJ's face
"What?"
I smiled
"I told them not to do this. I begged them. But you passed the Code Blue. It's when they talk about anything sensitive, because everyone always starts on best behavior and it gets old. Fast. To survive in the Reagan jungle, you need to know how to stand your ground. And I know you know how to. I mean, rules for fake dating, contract, signatures, handshake and all? I knew you had this in the bag.
I kissed her cheek and we all laughed, enjoying our time together.
