Chapter 2 Back To Where It All Began

It took them several hours to arrive in Palo Alto with a brief lunch break and occasional stops at restrooms at gas stations or restaurants. They finally arrived around 3pm in the afternoon and checked into a motel. They both rested for about an hour, but Sam started thinking about what to do, visit the cemetery Jessica is buried, or pay a visit to her family first, he just wasn't sure.

"Hey, Sam so what is the plan now that we're here, do you want to head to the cemetery and pay your respects right now?" Dean asked.

"I don't know yet, Dean, being here is a bit harder than I thought it would be" Sam said looking a bit conflicted as he sat on his bed.

"I get it dude, but you wanted to come all the way here, there is no turning back now, you got to figure out what we do now?" Dean said trying to be understanding.

"Yeah, I know, I mean tomorrow it will be ten years, I figure I could visit her grave and pay my respects, maybe even leave some flowers at her grave. Jessica liked daisies you know" Sam told him.

"We'll that's sounds nice" Dean said.

"And then I thought I wait until tomorrow to visit her family, maybe by then I can figure out what say to them, explain why I didn't go to her funeral and had been MIA all this time" Sam went on.

"That's all good but what do we do today just hang out here at the motel or go out for drink or what" Dean said as he was feeling a bit restless.

Then Sam's eyes lit up as if a lightbulb popped above his head.

"I know, I would like to drive by the Stanford campus and just walk around" Sam told him as he got up from the bed.

"The campus, yeah we could drive there but what actually for?" Dean asked.

"Just for old time's sake, I want to look around. That's the college where me and Jessica met afterall and I would like to check out the apartment building where we stayed, I mean I had a lot of memories of me and Jess at Stanford" Sam said.

"Okay, Sammy anything you want, we'll had out there whenever you're ready" Dean said.

"I'm ready right now" Sam said.

"Well, I'm feeling a bit restless around now myself I need to get out so okay" said Dean.

Within seconds, the two hopped in the Impala and drove off heading to Stanford University campus. It wasn't a long drive to Stanford and soon they were at the city's college campus. As they drove around the campus, old memories started flooding back to Sam. He remembered many times he walked around the campus heading to and from courses in the buildings, the dining hall where he ate his meals and the areas where he would just hang with his college friends and Jessica.

"Wow, this place is just as huge as I last remembered, you sure did go to what they call a distinguished place here college man" Dean remarked.

Sam kind of rolled his eyes. "I'm surprised you can say words alike distinguished" he replied teasingly.

"Hey, I read, sometimes" Dean said.

"Hey Dean, I want to drive by to the apartment where me and Jessica stayed" Sam replied.

"Okay, if you insist, but I may not remember where it was it's been a while" Dean said.

"I think I do, I'll tell you the directions" Sam said.

Then they were off driving around the campus as Sam gave Dean directions where to go until before they knew it, they were parked right in front of the apartment building where Sam lived with Jessica the last time he was there. The last time they saw that building it was set on fire caused by the demon Azazel who had killed Jessica, but it has since been rebuilt and restored and looks better than ever now. Sam just looked at the apartment building deep in thought.

"Boy, just to think, this is where it all started, the night I came here to get you" Dean said as Sam just stared on at the place not responding.

Then Sam turned to Dean and spoke up. "Boy, the last time we were it this place was burning because of that S.O.B. Azazel, now look at it, it's like nothing happened" he replied.

"Well, Sam that was years ago, I guess they would have had the place fixed up again by now. They did a good job, I say, you would never have thought this place had burned up.

"I think I will go up now" Sam said as he opened the car door and got out.

"What for?" Dean asked.

"Just to look around, hey you'll free to wait in the car if you like but I'm going up" Sam replied.

"Hey, you know me can't just sit around and miss all the fun can I" Dean said and opened up the driver's side door and hopped out of the car.

"So, okay we're going carousing around your old place and then what?" he asked Sam.

"Nothing, I just have to take a look at where me and Jess stayed just this one last time" said Sam.

"Alright, lead the way bro" Dean said.

The two of them then walked around the building and found the basement area which was the same place they exit the building when Dean found him ten years ago to tell them that their father was missing from a "hunting" trip. They remembered exactly where it was and when nobody was looking, the walked down the steps and opened the door. Then the two found the stairway and walked up the stairs until they reached the floor where Sam and Jessica's apartment was. Then they walked through the hall passing some college students who were walking by or entering their suites. They even passed a couple of attractive blonde college girls dressed in jeans and tank tops who briefly glared at them as if they were wondering who they were, and Dean couldn't help but turn and eye them up as they walked pass them checking out their butts.

"Dean really" Sam replied rolling his eyes at Dean checkout out those girls.

"What? I can't look anymore, I maybe a one-woman man now but I'm not blind" Dean said.

"You can be such a perv sometimes" Sam said.

"Hey, they're both over eighteen, there's nothing pervy about that, don't be such a prude, Sammy" Dean told him.

Finally, they found the door to the apartment where Sam used to live with Jessica, and they just stopped right in front of it.

"There it is, where me and Jess lived together right in this place, I could never forget it" Sam said.

Once again, memories starting flooding back of him and Jessica as he touched the doorknob rubbing it. Dean just looked around hoping nobody would see, although a couple of students walked passed, and glared at them but then went on their business. Sam continued to rub the doorknob seemingly in deep thought as he still couldn't stop thinking about Jessica and the memories they had behind that door. Dean just looked a bit impatient wondering what Sam wanted to do next.

"Hey Sam, I know that is a bit rough for you and all but what do you suppose we do, just stand out here all day while you stare at the door, I mean some people are starting look at us funny" he told him.

"I don't know what I thought I was going to do, being back here all this time. If only I could just see this apartment one last time, but I know that's impossible" Sam said with a bit of a sad look on his face.

"Hey, who said it is" replied Dean who then went up to the door and began knocking on it.

"Dean what are you doing?" Sam asked looking nervous like they were about to do something wrong.

"Just checking to see if anybody is inside" Dean replied as he kept knocking on the door like a visitor.

Sam turned around to glance to see if anybody else saw them, but nobody was out in the hall this time.

"Dean stop that, I mean what if whoever is staying there now opens the door?" Sam replied as he grabbed at Dean's wrist.

Dean just pulled away and kept knocking. "We'll just say that we are visiting our little brother and knocked on the wrong door that's all" he replied as he stopped knocking.

"It doesn't seem like anybody his home, so we can help ourselves" Dean said.

"Help ourselves to what?" asked Sam who was afraid to ask.

"Help ourselves in" Dean told him.

Sam looked shocked that Dean would just such a thing.

"Dean we can't that's breaking and entering, besides, the last time you broke in, it was through the bathroom window, and I think people will notice this time" said Sam.

"Hey, I don't plan for us to get in through there not with too many people around, this time we will break in the way we usually do" Dean said as he reached into his pants pocket and pulled out an unfolded paperclip that he usually uses to pick a lock.

Sam's eyes lit up as he couldn't believe what Dean was about to do.

"Dean, like I said before this is breaking and entering, we just can't" he cried out.

"Relax there, Sammy, you said you wanted to get inside to take a look one last time, well this is the way, nobody's in and we've broken and entered places before" Dean said.

"That's different, we were working cases, this is not the same thing" Sam said nervously as he was looking around making sure nobody saw them.

"Hey, this is your only chance just keep a lookout to make sure nobody's looking" Dean said as he bended over and began picking the door lock with the paper clip.

Sam just kept looking around scared that they would be caught but the hall remained empty for now.

"Dean, what if whoever lives here returns?" Sam said.

"We'll just hide like we do before, I mean, we've been through that plenty of times" Dean said as he kept trying to pick the lock.

At one time, they heard a door open and turned to see it was a girl coming out of one of the apartment doors. Dean just stopped what he was doing and just knocked on the door pretending be a visitor as the girl just walked past them briefly glanced their way and headed down the stairs. Once she was out of sight, Dean quickly resumed what he was doing and after a few minutes, Dean succeeded and was able to open the door.

"Now, we can go inside" Dean replied as Sam was hesitant still worried that they would get caught.

"Come on hurry up before anybody else sees us" he said.

With that, Sam hurried inside with Dean following behind him and quickly closed and locked the door.

"Dean, I don't think this is a good idea at all" Sam said still looking about nervously hoping whoever lives there no, won't show up.

"Hey, it was you who wanted to take a look around this old place that you and Jessica used to board, now here's your chance so, let's hurry up so we can get out before the new roomies get back" Dean said.

Both Sam and Dean strolled around the living room area as Sam's noticed all the new furniture. There was a new larger TV set with a DVD player attached to a new table and chairs and couch. Once again, it brought back old memories as Sam was thinking about the times he, Jessica and sometimes their friends just chilled in the living room talking, joking around, or watching a DVD of a film they all enjoyed. Other times it was just him and Jessica cuddled up on the couch either talking or making out. Sam was in deep thought as Dean stormed around the area and went to where there was a glass door which led to the kitchen. It was a new glass door which was expected, and Dean walked over to check it out.

"Hey, I remember this door, well, this is a new door, but I was coming out it when you jumped me that night and I wound up kicking your ass" Dean replied as he turned to see if Sam was listening, but he clearly wasn't as he was walking around the living room area still in thought.

Then Dean walked over to the TV set and noticed that the TV set table had a pile of DVDs, some of them were Harry Potter films and another was pile of The Fast and the Furious flicks up to part 6 and he began to fumble a bit with the DVDs picking them up.

"Get a load of this, whoever lives here is a fan of action flicks, I mean the Fast and the Furious films and Harry Potter, they most like the fantasy stuff too" he said turning to Sam once again to see if he was listening, but Sam just stared into space still in his thoughts.

Dean then put the DVD back to where it was.

"Hey Sam, you're okay?" he asked him, knowing what Sam was thinking about.

Sam just stared at the new furniture but still couldn't stop thinking about all the good times he had in this apartment.

"It's just all coming back to me, Dean. I mean this place, me and Jessica, this was our first apartment that we lived together that year as a couple. We picked this place to live together" he said.

Dean just swallowed a bit looking a somewhat concerned.

"Hey, I understand this could be a bit much for you, if you want to go now…"he replied but Sam cut him off.

"No, not yet I want to see the bedroom now" he told him as he didn't seem to be concerned anymore about being caught in the apartment that is no longer his.

"Alright Sam" Dean said and the two of them heading off to where the bedroom was.

They walked pass the bathroom and Sam noticed that the wooden beaded curtains no longer hung in one of the hall entrances, as also expected, besides the those belonged to Jessica, a gift from her parents. They entered the bedroom and it too looked different than the last time Sam saw it with all new furniture and everything. The new dressers had some textbooks and backpacks, a fancy looking piggy bank, and on the desk with a chair was a laptop laying that was opened. On one of the desks, was a picture frame with a photo of a young couple, a dark-haired girl and a dark-haired guy smiling happy into the camera. There was also a basketball laying on the floor and more photos on one the walls of numerous people mostly with the girl and the guy in the picture. Dean looked over at the photos.

"Hmm… I suppose this is the happy couple now occupying your old place" he said but Sam was still in thought.

Then Dean noticed a book on dresser on the right side of the bed and the title was "How To Be A Writer", then he turned to the bookshelf and noticed a lot of books mostly classic mystery novels plenty by Agatha Christie and some even by James Patterson. There was also a book titled "Collection of Short Stories by Edgar Allan Poe".

"Wow, one half of the duo seems to like mysteries, plus wants to be a writer, or maybe it's both of them" Dean replied but Sam didn't respond as he was still in his thoughts.

As Sam looked at the bed and touched it, he couldn't help but think about most of the memories he had with Jessica, the very first day they met through his old friend Brady, their first date, first concert together that summer, meeting her family, hanging with their friends or just together, moving in this apartment, the many times the made love on their bed and that Halloween when she was dressed up in her sexy nurse uniform with red fake pearl necklace for college party, of course he didn't dress up for Halloween which she hated. Then he thought of the very last time he saw her alive that night he left with Dean to go find their father and promised to be back in time for his exam as he was planning to enroll in Stanford's Law school after he graduated. Just thinking about that engagement ring he was planning on buying her and all the plans they had together for the future. He really thought Jessica was his chance of having a normal life in a normal loving relationship and then he couldn't help thinking about when he returned and saw Jessica up on that ceiling probably already dead as she burst into flames just like what happened to their mother when he was a baby.

All the sad and guilty emotions started hitting him hard as he couldn't help regretting losing her even though he's found a chance of a relationship with Gwen, he couldn't help wonder what life had been like if Jessica lived. He could be okay not being together with her, would have even broke up with her if he knew it would have kept her alive. She didn't deserve what happened to her all because of Azazel and his plans for Sam. At least that bastard got what was coming to him and his plans dashed forever but at what a price.

"Sam, you're okay man, you know I think we should get outta here now, I mean just in case the two lovebirds return to their love nest and find two strange men occupying it reminiscing about old times" Dean replied.

Sam finally came out of this trance and turned to Dean.

"Hey man, we better get outta here, we don't need to push our luck" Dean said.

Sam just nodded. "Okay" he replied.

Both of them headed for the door but Dean looked out the peephole first and seeing nobody was around he unlocked and slowly opened the door slightly peeking out to see if the close was clear and it was. Then the two headed out the door really quickly as Dean made sure that the door was locked once they closed it, and they hurried a bit through the hall and down the stairs where they walked pass some college students heading up the stairs who gave them quick glances and then they went down the basement and out of the basement door leading up the steps outside. Then the two breathed a sigh of relief as they were now outside again and started walking around the campus and hadn't got caught.

Sam couldn't help to tell Dean about his feelings when he was in that apartment again. "You know Dean, when I was back at that place again, so many thoughts and memories were coming in my mind. I mean I couldn't stop thinking about Jessica and most the moments we had at that place, sometimes it was all too much" he said as they walked on the sidewalk through the campus passing college students here and there.

"I understand man, I mean why wouldn't this bring back all those memories, this is where it all happened, what happened to her and all and I get it, this where you two lived together were making plans for your future, I was always sorry that you had to go through that and all and there was nothing I could do to make it go away after it happened" Dean told him as he gave out a sigh thinking about the time he watched his little brother mourn his girlfriend not being able to do anything about it and feeling quite helpless and although Sam never blamed him, a part of him still wondered if he had gone on his search for their dad alone rather than show up and get Sam, maybe he could have saved her from Azazel.

That guilt always weighed on him thinking he played a part in Sam's losing the first girl he ever loved.

"So where do you want to go now or are you ready to go now?" he asked hoping that they could leave soon.

"I just wanted to check around this place some more Dean, if that's okay?" Sam asked.

"Hey, whatever you want like I said before" Dean replied a bit upset that they weren't leaving yet but he wasn't going to say that to Sam since he meant what he said whatever he wanted.

The brothers continued to walk around the campus grounds and passed some buildings that Sam remembered going into for his classes and finally made their way to the college library and Sam insisted on entering the building. They soon headed inside and looked around the place that was exactly liked he remembered as he saw some students sitting down studying or talking somewhere to each other standing in the aisle.

Dean just leaned over to Sam to ask him a question, "So what do want to do, it's not like you can check it a few books for class anymore, Sam" he replied.

"I know that Dean, it's just that this library holds a lot of memories as well, me and Jessica hung out here a lot sometimes with our friends, Jessica was a serious student and she loved to read, something we had in common" Sam whispered to Dean not wanting to disturb the other folks.

"Wow, who knew, I thought Jessica was far too hot to be a geek like you, but you never know" Dean replied teasingly shrugging his shoulders.

"Come on, Dean I told you Jessica was very smart and was hoping to get her PH.D. and all" Sam said.

"Yeah, I know, I'm just kidding little brother, hot and brains a great combination, we'll take all the time you like here if that helps" Dean said.

"Thanks Dean" Sam told him.

The two soon were just looking around the place and Dean even found some books that interested him on the bookshelves mainly scary, paranormal or science-fiction or fantasy. Sam just strolled around in deep thoughts as he was having more memories of the times that he and Jessica were at this building talking, studying or both and he even found one of tables he and Jessica used to sit at together. Or even found one of her favorite books she loved to read on one of the bookshelves. This was quite a lot for him, and he was so wrapped up his thoughts about Jessica that he checked his watch and realized how much time had passed as he was there longer than he expected. He went over to find Dean who was in one of the aisles reading a horror fiction novel and really into it.

"Okay, Dean I'm ready to get out of this place now" he told him.

Dean looked up from the book at him not looking too thrilled. "Great man, just when I was really getting into this book, it's about the occult and the somebody is killing off the members in gruesome ways, really gory stuff man and it involves Satan in all…"he said but Sam interrupted him.

"Come on Dean, it's time, didn't expect to be here this long" he told him.

"Now, you're ready to go, well let me at least just take this with us, I can just hide in under and no one would know?" Dean replied really eager to finish that book.

"Dean!" Sam cried out forgetting to keep his voice down.

"Hey, it's just one book, nobody will know" Dean replied.

"We are not stealing a library book, you can just buy the book at a bookstore okay" Sam said anxiously grabbing the book from Dean and putting it back on the shelf.

Dean just had a sulky look on his face. "You always have to be such a boy scout, don't you" he told him like some pouty kid.

"Come on Dean, lets' get out of here already" Sam said urgingly.

"Okay, didn't really want to be in this hangout that's for a bunch of bookworms anyway" Dean replied.

The two started walking towards the front door and as they were about to head out, they heard a woman's voice. "Sam?" the voice said.

Both of them turned around and Sam just looked surprised as he was now facing someone very familiar from his past.

I will try to post the chapters at least monthly or less than that as much as possible. I'll also try to write lesser chapters than my first one but can't make guarantees. Please post reviews to my chapters in the future and hope you'll enjoy this sequel. Thanks.
