Chapter 3 A Familiar Face

Sam and Dean both turned around as they were about to exit the campus library only to find themselves facing the voice of a woman who had called out to Sam. The woman who they were facing was a very familiar face from Sam's past and someone he didn't expect to see again. She was a young attractive woman about Sam's age, petite and average height with wavy medium length ombre hair, dark brown on top and with light brown highlights on the bottom and hazel eyes. She was dressed in a typical business attire, a gray blouse, blue trousers and black blazer, wearing light makeup and some jewelry and was holding a leather brown executive bag in one hand and her purse in the other looking like she worked in the office. She had a friendly look and smiled when she saw Sam as her eyes lit up in shock as the same time his did.

"Oh my god, Sam it is you, it's been a long time, but I thought that was you although I wasn't sure but never thought I find you hear again" she said with a happy look to her face to seeing an old friend.

"Peyton, I didn't expect to see you again either, not at this place" Sam said as he also looked excited of seeing a familiar face.

"Yeah, this is weird seeing each other back at campus again, seems just like old times doesn't it" she replied still smiling looking so surprised to see him again.

"Yeah, it sure does" Sam said smiling back.

"Okay, I take it you two know each other" Dean finally spoke up as he just stood by and listened to the reunion between them.

Sam turned to Dean acknowledging is presence as he had been so caught up on seeing his old friend again, he almost forget that he was there.

"Oh, I'm sorry, Peyton this my brother Dean, and Dean this Peyton Goffe, she was one of Jessica's best friends and an old friend of mine too when I was a student here" Sam explained looking back at Peyton.

"Hello, nice to meet you" said Peyton smiling at Dean.

"Yeah, nice to meet you too, any old friend of Sam's here is a friend of mine you could say" Dean said smiling as he patted his brother on the shoulder.

"That's nice anyway, still can't believe you're here, I mean it was ten years ago the last time I saw you, you kind of disappeared after, well you know with Jessica" Peyton said looking awkward as if she couldn't bring herself to say that Jessica died.

Sam also started to look a bit uncomfortable as he knew he had to give some explanation to why he left Stanford after Jessica died.

"Well, after what happened with Jessica, I just needed to get away for some time, plus I was dealing with family issues and all and I just never could bring myself to come back here, it was a bit too much" Sam told her although her felt a bit guilty not telling the whole truth he wasn't entirely lying either.

Peyton just had an awkward look on her face.

"Okay, I get it I think but where have you been all this time and why didn't you come back at all?" she asked curiously.

Sam swallowed not knowing exactly what to tell her. "Well, I've dealt with family issues, and having a new purpose in my life and all and it's kind of complicated to explain it all right now" Sam told her.

"Alright, but why are you back now after all this time?" she asked him again.

"I came back here because tomorrow will be ten years since Jessica died and I wanted to pay my respects since I never got to go to her funeral and maybe visit her family and pay my respects to them too" Sam told her.

Just then Peyton eyes lit up at the mention of Jessica's funeral and her tenth anniversary of her death.

"Oh my, I forget that tomorrow will be the night that horrible accident happened to her at the dorm ten years from now, gosh it feels so much longer in away. I can't believe I didn't remember, but I had so much on my plate" Peyton explained.

"Hey, I understand, I wouldn't expect everybody that knew her to show up but then" Sam told her.

"But I'm not just anybody I was her closest friend, and I haven't even thought about it, I just had so much going on" said Peyton feeling a bit guilty.

"Hey, that's okay, I don't blame you, I almost didn't remember it either, by the way, I have to ask you, what are you doing here on the campus, I mean I would have thought you graduated long ago?" Sam asked her.

"I did, with a PH.D. in Linguistics now, you see I'm on the faculty here as an assistant professor" she explained.

"Woah, you teach here now, that's kind great" Sam told her not knowing what to say.

"Yeah, work has been quite hectic since I've had to take over the whole class since Dr. Snyder the Linguistics professor is in the hospital recuperating from surgery and I came here to get some work done. I've always preferred getting my work done here because it's much more relaxing for me and easier to focus" she explained.

"So, once again you're doing homework in the library, I remember you and Jessica used to love doing that a lot" Sam explained.

"As did you, you were quite the study geek, me and Jess had to sometimes get you to loosen you up and have some fun more often" she reminded him as Dean just squirted out a little laugh while Sam turned to him with an annoyed look.

"Well, anyway, I've been here most of the day, so I'm just heading out back to my place, but it was nice seeing you again, Sam" she said.

"Same here Peyton" Sam said.

"How long are you going to be here anyway?" she asked him.

"I'm planning on being here until the day after tomorrow, then I'm heading out again, by the way you like to head out at the cemetery to and pay your respects, you're welcome to join us" Sam said.

Peyton just had a slight guilty look on her face as she just sighed and slightly shook her head. "You know Sam, I'm not very good about visiting cemeteries, I paid my respects long ago when I went to her funeral and Jessica will be in my thoughts no matter what, but you know you go and do what you have to do and all" she told him.

"Alright, I understand, maybe hopefully we will meet up again tomorrow and catch up after I pay my respects to Jessica" Sam said.

"That will be nice I would like that, here wait just a minute" she said as she went through her purse and pulled out a pin and then a small sheet of paper from a small note pad and started writing her phone number and handed it the paper to Sam.

"This is my number, call me while you're here, I'll be free around on my lunch break at noon or my last class ends before 4:00 so you can reach me then" she said.

"Great, I hope I'll be able to squeeze you in, me and Dean got be going too but it was great seeing you Peyton" Sam said.

"And you too take care" Peyton told him.

Then both Sam and Dean stepped out of the way and got the door for her as she thanked him, and they said their last goodbyes. Then Sam and Dean also headed out going in another direction as they walked around the campus.

"Wow, what are the odds, first going back to your old college, checking out your old apartment and now running into an old college pal, what a luck" Dean replied as they were walking around the campus.

"I know, it was good seeing Peyton again, she was Jess's best friend when I was at Stanford, felt bad that I never got to speak to her after what happened so this was pretty great" said Sam.

"So, are you going to catch up with your old college gal pal?" Dean asked.

"Maybe, I mean I hope I can find the time tomorrow to do some catching up, talking about college and Jess and what we been up to and all. Of course, I can't tell her about what we do but it should be fine" Sam replied.

"Of course, I suppose you want some alone time with your old college buddy who I might add is not a bad-looking college buddy" Dean teased.

"Oh, come on Dean, me and Peyton go way back, she was one of Jess's best friends for quite sake" Sam replied light-heartedly.

"Hey, just saying, she is kind of a looker, I wouldn't fault you if the two of you really bond together if you know what I mean" Dean teased again.

"Hey, knock it off Dean, you know I'm with Gwen now and I never thought about Peyton like that not even back then" Sam replied kind of surprised Dean would suggest such a thing.

"Hey, take it easy little bro, I'm just messing with you. Of course, I know you wouldn't two-time Gwen after everything, you're too much of a boy scout for that" Dean replied.

"Oh, and you're saying you're not after everything with Ava" Sam reminded him.

Dean just sort of nodded his head. "Yeah, Ava has completely made a one-woman-man out of me, something I thought I would never hear myself say once upon a time, but those days are over, scary isn't it" Dean said half joking.

"Well, hang in there, you're get used to it" Sam said.

"Who said I'm not already used to it" Dean said still kind of joking.

The two of them made their way back to the parking lot and hopped into the Impala. Soon they were back to their motel, called Adam and Charlie to check on them and filled them in on some of the details. By that evening they headed out to dinner and ate at a nice restaurant before getting some drinks at a bar for about a couple of hours before returning to the motel. They watched some TV, phoned Adam and Charlie again, then when it got really late, they turned it off and went to bed.

The next morning, the two of them headed out to the diner to get some breakfast. Afterwards, Sam decided to stop by a florist shop and buy a bouquet of daisies, as daisies were Jessica's favorite flowers. It was still morning time not yet noon when they drove to the cemetery but as Sam and Dean headed for Jessica's grave tomb with the bouquet of flowers, Sam quickly stopped in his tracks and Dean did the same. They saw up ahead Jessica's parents standing right in front of her tomb and looking down at it.

"What's the matter Sam?" Dean asked.

"That's Jess's folks, they must have gotten here too to pay their respects since it's the tenth anniversary" Sam replied.

"So, what's the problem didn't you say you wanted to visit them and pay their respects?" Dean asked.

"Yes, but I guess I'm not ready to face them just yet, I wanted to stop by the house afterwards. Besides, I don't want to intrude in on their time on honoring her memory. Let's just leave and come back later when they're gone" Sam said.

"Okay, are you sure about this?" Dean asked.

"Yeah Dean, this isn't the right time for me, please let's just go" Sam told him.

"Whatever you say" Dean told him as he wasn't going to push it and was going to respect whatever Sam wanted on his terms.

They both left the cemetery and just headed back to motel and just watched some TV and talked. Sam even called up Gwen and told her where he was at and what he was doing. She was very understanding and sympathetic wishing him the best which just reminded Sam what he loved about her and how wonderful she was. They talked for a while before hanging up. Dean also phoned Ava to check up on her who at that time was getting together with an old female hunting friend of hers and just hanging out. They too talked for a while before saying their goodbyes promising to visit each other again soon. Then they phoned Adam and spoke to both of him and Charlie as Adam placed his phone on speaker and just checked up on them to see how they were doing.

They weren't doing much but the usual although they both discussed what to do that day as they both were getting bored just doing the same thing like hanging out at the bar or go to a movie and wanted to something different. They finally came to the conclusion that they can go hiking even though it would mean driving pretty further out of town to do that, but they didn't care they needed something fun and different to do. Dean and Sam wished them both the best of luck and they said their goodbyes after talking for a while. Sam also wanted to phone Peyton but she would likely be teaching courses right now so he decided to wait late in the afternoon.

A few hours had passed, and it was soon early in the afternoon and Sam decided to head back to the cemetery as he figured Jessica's parents had left by now. Both of them left the motel, hopped right back into the Impala and drove back to the cemetery. Dean waited in the car this time as Sam wanted to do this alone. Sam walked around the cemetery passing headstones until he found Jessica's. He stood right in front of it and read name and date as it stated: Jessica Lee Moore, Born January 24, 1984, died November 2, 2005, Gone but Not Forgotten. Sam bent down and placed the bouquet of daisies right in front of her headstone and just kept staring at her grave site. Then he cleared his throat as he prepared to speak.

"Hello Jess, long time no see, I guess. I just came by to pay my respects and show that I was thinking about you today. I'm very sorry that I missed your funeral, I wished I had been there, but me and Dean had to take care of business. We got him though, we killed that bastard that caused all of this, and I even got that demon that was possessing Brady, who killed you. At least they won't harm anybody again, that was the least I could do. I never forgot you though, and even though in my head I know I couldn't have had any way of knowing that bastard Azazel was going to have you killed, a part of me will always feel responsible for what happened to you and that I should have been there to stop it and protect you and I wasn't. You didn't deserve what happened to you, it wasn't fair. We had so much plans together to spend our lives together and it was all taken away because of my past that I tried to run away from".

Sam briefly paused, swallowed and started again.

"But I'm doing fine now, me and Dean are going around the world hunting evil creatures like that demon that killed you to protect the world, to make sure no more innocent lives are lost like yours. I probably will spend the rest of my life hunting those things, maybe that's what I was always destined to do, not become a lawyer, not to have that normal apple-pie life, but doing what I'm doing now.

I've also managed to meet someone else, even though I used to think that was impossible for me. Her name is Gwen, she's a psychic both her and her grandmother and she is wonderful, she really gets me, and we've shared in some of the adventures together. You would really like her, she's the first person in a long time that really is important to me, that I can have a life with. But a part of me will always have a place for you, even though I've moved on. No matter what Jessica, I never regret falling in love with you" Sam finished his speech he felt a sadness over him, thinking about Jessica again and how unfair that she had to lose her life because of his past and what her life could have been like if she lived.

Sam was about to say something more when all of the sudden he heard another female voice.

"Sam is that you?" the voice said.

Sam surprised quickly turned around and found himself staring at once again what he thought was a familiar face.
