Chapter 4 Another Familiar Face
Sam having turned around was now staring face to face with a young woman so young she looked like she could be a college student. She was wearing a dark purple lace up rings tank top with moon decorations on them, black spike jeans with a spike belt and sneakers. She had deep shoulder-length honey blonde hair and brown eyes, purple colored polished nails and was wearing a nose ring along with three earrings in each ear and a pendulum necklace shaped like a moon around her neck. She looked like she could be one of those grunge girls he's seen around in the past but as he looked closely at her he couldn't help feel that there was something very familiar about her.
"Oh, my god Sam, that really is you, I mean I never thought I see you again, in a million freaking years" the girl said.
After getting a better look, Sam's eyes lit up as he suddenly realized who she was and was quite surprised himself.
"Chloe is that you?" he asked her.
"Yeah, it's me, I know it's been a long time and I guess you wouldn't recognize me. That last time you saw me I was still a freaking kid, but I'm all grown up now" she told him smiling.
Sam still couldn't believe his eyes. After all these years he was staring at Chloe Travers, Jessica's younger half-sister all grown up as she was just a little girl only ten years old the last time that he saw her.
"Yeah, I say you are, I mean it's good seeing you and all, you look great" Sam said happy to see another familiar face and one who is a family member of Jessica's.
Then he stepped closer to her and the two embraced a little before stepping back and just glared at each other smiling.
"It's good seeing you too but I have to ask, what are you doing here, I mean after all this time?" she asked curiously.
"I came here to pay my respects to Jessica since it's been ten years today when she you know died" Sam said a bit uncomfortable. "I know I missed the funeral and all and just took off after what happened and I'm not making any excuses, but I did have my reasons but, anyway I came here yesterday when I realized it what day today would be" he continued.
"Oh, well that's nice and all, I mean my family comes here to her grave every year on this date to give their respects, I never expected to you to come all this way just for her anniversary all, none of any of her old friends do" she said.
"Yeah, well I was in California anyway and when I realized what today would be, I just showed up yesterday hoping to give my respects and possibly pay your folks a visit and maybe apologize for not being at her funeral" Sam said.
Chloe just sort of looked down a bit than looked up again at Sam and swallowed. "I'm sure my folks would like that even though they hadn't seen you in years. The funny thing is mom, actually mentioned you today" she told him.
"She did?" asked Sam looking kind of surprised.
"Yeah, earlier this morning before they left to visit her grave, mom mentioned you and Jessica and wondered what became of you and imagined the two of you probably getting married and have this happy little family if Jess was still alive" Chloe said.
"Really, that's what she said" Sam seemed touched by this revelation as he had sometimes thought the same thing.
"Yeah, mom's always saying some mushy sappy thing like that, I mean who knows what would have happened, maybe you two would have gone your separate ways and married other people and had your own families or, maybe you two both just ended up single wrapped up in your careers or who knows, you two could have gotten hitched and divorced by now having popped a couple of kids" Chloe replied in a bit a sarcastic tone.
"Why, you became quite the cynic" Sam replied a bit amused by her remarks.
"Hey, I just see myself as a realist, but seriously I'm sure my folks would love for you to drop by especially today" Chloe said.
"I would like that too, I think I'll head there right now, but what about you, I mean I haven't even asked how you've been doing?" he asked her.
"Hey, I'm doing fine, I mean I'm not doing terrible" she told him.
"How has things going for you, I'm mean what have you been up to and all I would assume you're in college now?" Sam asked her.
"Well, yeah I am in college right now" Chloe told him.
"Do you go to Stanford too?" Sam asked her.
"Stanford, no that's out of my league, that was Jess's thing and all but not for me, I attend Foothill College at Los Altos Hill" she told him.
"That's a community college as I recall" Sam said.
"Yeah, I know, I know, it's no Stanford, but hey, I was never the big brain like Jess was, and it's suits me so I don't care, my folks weren't too happy at first, they at least wanted me to go to a four year college and get a bachelor's degree but that's not my scene as they saying goes, now they're just relieved I decided to go at all after taking a gap year when I finished high school" she told him.
"So, what are you studying there?" Sam asked her.
"I'm studying art, I mean I always loved to draw even when I was a little kid as you should remember" she told him.
"Yeah, I do, I remember you showing me and Jess your little artwork of Ariel from the Little Mermaid or Alice in Wonderland" Sam told her.
"Hey, I was just a kid back then sue me, now I draw dark, gothic and eerie things, you should see my drawings of Alice in Wonderland now" she told him with a smirk.
"That I would be interesting to see, well anyway, I'm heading off to your folks right now, I can follow you there in your car" Sam suggested.
"I didn't get here by car, since I unfortunately don't have my own yet" she told him.
"Then how did you get here?" Sam asked.
"I took the bus, my folks aren't keen letting me borrow the car lately" Chloe said.
"How come?" asked Sam.
Chloe kind of sighed and had a bit of an reluctant look on her face.
"Well, maybe it's due to the fact that I got into trouble the last time, well technically they claimed I was doing a DUI" she explained awkwardly.
Sam looked a bit shocked. "You mean you drinking and driving, that's dangerous Chloe" he cried out.
"Hey, chill now, I said technically I was considered intoxicated by the legal definition, but I really wasn't that drunk, I mean no slurring words or anything like that" said Chloe.
"Doesn't matter, if you were legally intoxicated you were driving under the influence, did you get arrested or anything?" Sam cried out.
Chloe just nodded her head a bit. "Yeah, they took me to the station and all and mom and dad had to come and get me, and they were so pissed. I mean this wasn't the first time I was caught a bit drunk but the first time I was caught driving even though I wasn't that drunk but they banned me from using their car until I'm 21, hoping I learn my lesson which I did, I will never drive after drinking again even if I'm a just a bit tipsy but they are doing the tough love thing" Chloe explained in a cavalier tone showing she still didn't seem to think it was that big of a deal.
"Well, I hope you did learn a lesson Chloe, don't try that again" Sam told her in an authoritative tone.
"Hey, you are starting sound like my parents" Chloe said.
Sam calmed down a bit not wanting to start an argument not now after seeing Jess's sister again after all these years on the anniversary of her death. Chloe is not his responsibility after all, she's her parents' problem and he had to remember his purpose.
"Okay, I'm not going to play parent with you I just want to see your folks. No need for you to wait for the bus, I came here with my brother who's waiting in the car and we'll give you a lift back home since that where we're heading next" Sam told her.
"Hey, cool, I never meant any of your family, is he a hunk like you?" asked Chloe in a teasingly tone.
Sam looked a bit embarrassed having Jess's baby sister seem to be flirting with him since he last saw her as a little girl.
"Uh, he's the cool big brother and that's about it" he told her showing his awkwardness.
"Relax there Sam, I'm just messing with you, I know you both are too old for me, I mean you were my big sister's boyfriend and all and besides, I'm still young I don't go out with some old timer" she told him teasingly again.
"Oh, some old timer huh" Sam said smirking.
"Hey, not my fault time caught up with you, anyway, let's go, I kind of like to meet this cool older brother" she told him.
Sam just laughed bit amused by her sarcasm.
"Okay, come on, this old timer will get you that ride now" he said. As Sam walked up close to Chloe to lead her away, he noticed something he hadn't noticed before.
There was a tattoo that was quite visible on her right collar bone. Sam didn't think much about it before but when he got a real closer look, he noticed the type of tattoo it was and he couldn't help observe it. It seemed to be a in a form of an upside-down odal rune which he has seen before with a Y shape vertical line in the middle that has three points rather than the normal two, he's seen that before too but can't remember what it's called. The thing that makes him so curious about the that this type of diagram is that it looks quite familiar to him as he knows he's seen it before but can't place when or what it is exactly but just has a funny feeling about it and he can't help but keep glaring at it.
"Hey, are heading back to your car already?" she asked.
Sam stopped looking at her tattoo and turned to face her again. "Oh, I'm sorry I just couldn't help notice your tattoo" he told her.
Chloe looked down at her collar bone and placed her hand on her tattoo. "Oh, this, yeah, I got this awhile back, just something crazy I decided to do with a group of friends, no big deal even though my parents didn't like it too much, they can be pretty uptight though" she told him as she removed her hand from her tattoo.
"Yeah, I guess parents can be like that sometimes" Sam said.
"With me it's almost all the time" Chloe replied.
Then the two finally headed back to the Impala as Sam continued to think about that tattoo and swearing to himself that he's seen it somewhere and had a really gut feeling about it, but he wasn't going to bring that up with Chloe. Dean was still waiting in the car looking quite bored when he noticed Sam heading back and with some strange girl that made him curious. He got out of his car to greet them as Sam walked over to him.
"Hey, who's that, what, you made a little grieving bonding buddy at the cemetery?" Dean asked out of curiously being a bit sarcastic.
"Dean, this is Chloe, Jessica's younger sister, I mean it was by chance she showed up at Jess's grave to pay her respects too on this day" Sam explained pointing to Chloe.
"Jess's sister, I mean Sam mentioned Jess had a little sister who was just a little kid when the last time he saw her, but you're not so little anymore, I see" Dean told her.
"And you must be Dean, the big brother Sam mentioned" Chloe said in a greeting tone.
Dean kind of smirked. "So, Sam, mentioned me here?" he replied.
"Slow down, Mr. Ego, I just said I was here with you, anyway, Chloe needs a ride back to her place, since we're heading there anyway, I thought we give her a lift" Sam said.
"Sure, nice to meet you by the way" Dean told her.
"You too" Chloe replied.
After a few more brief moments of conversation, all three of them got into the car with Chloe riding in the back, still chatting up the Winchesters asking a few questions about their life, what Sam had been doing exactly and how they came to be in California. Both Dean and Sam were careful with their answers not telling her everything just, claiming Sam traveled around with Dean to get away from what happened to Jess and how the experience changed his priorities. So he decided to leave Stanford altogether and continued going on the road with Dean traveling around the country. They managed to find some work then made their way to Kansas to run a bar. They recently left their business to take a trip to California around Halloween since they don't really celebrate the holiday and Sam remembered Jess's 10th anniversary of the night she died so they headed in Palo Alto to pay their respects.
Chloe listened quite intrigued on everything they told her. Sam and Dean both felt a bit guilty for lying to her especially Sam, but they couldn't just reveal the truth about their life. It was the story they will have to tell her family when they get over to her house. They finally drove up to her parents' house and parked in the driveway and got out of the car. Sam was impressed how the house was exactly as he remembered. Nothing had changed since he last saw it. Walking to the front door was bringing back memories to Sam of when he first arrived her with Jessica to meet her family for the very first time and he was feeling quite nervous as if was meeting them for the first time all over again. Dean kind of sensed Sam's nervousness.
"Hey, ready to meet the parents" he teased.
"Yeah, let's do this" replied Sam and soon they were at the door as Chloe using her key that she had in her purse unlock the front door, opened it and soon all three of them were inside.
Sam's just swallowed as he felt a lump in his throat anticipating what was going to happen next.
