Chapter 5 More Familiar Faces
Chloe led both Sam and Dean into the front hall then turned toward them.
"Wait here a minute, I want to surprise them okay" she said.
"It's that you Chloe" called out her mother from the kitchen.
Chloe headed towards the kitchen to greet her mother who appeared to be preparing dinner.
"Yeah mom I just got back, where is dad?" she asked her mom.
"He's in the study doing his work. You know I still wish you would've gone with us this morning to your sister's grave site" her mother replied as she stopped what she was doing to face Chloe. Chloe just sighed a bit.
"I know, but I guess I just wasn't up to it then, and I wanted to pay my respects alone, I just wanted some privacy with her if you can understand" Chloe explained.
Her mom just kind of sighed herself.
"Yes, I get it Chloe, but it just wasn't the same with you not with us, but I don't want to push this" she told her.
"Thanks mom" Chloe said. Then her mom looked a bit confused.
"That's funny, the bus doesn't come at the bus stop this early" she replied.
"I know, I didn't take the bus home, I got a lift home" Chloe explained.
"A lift by who?" her mom asked curiously.
"From someone we hadn't seen in years who had come all this way to pay his own respects" Chloe said.
"Who is this person you're talking about?" her mother asked more curious.
"Someone you'll be surprised to see as he's here right now in the hall waiting, come on I'll show you" Chloe said a bit excited as she led her mother out of the kitchen into the hall.
As her mother followed her into the hall she quickly stopped and stared in shock once she glances at Sam with Dean. Her expression went from surprise to joy.
"Sam, Sam Winchester!" she cried out.
Sam just stared right back feeling also excited and emotional to seeing Jessica's mother again as she was almost exactly how he remembered her only a bit older. Sam couldn't help but just stare at the middle-aged woman, maybe in her mid-fifties, was slightly tall with blonde hair pinned up in a bun, dressed in a light green short-sleeve blouse and brown pants. Her blue eyes were quite youthful looking, and she was quite an older lady and Sam always felt that Jessica got her good looks from her. They both smiled when they glanced at each like old friends who hadn't seen each other in a long time.
"Yeah, it's me Mrs. Travers, I know long time no see, huh" was all Sam could say.
"Oh, my lord, I can't believe it's really you Sam" replied Mrs. Travers who quickly ran over to Sam and gave him a nice hug who hugged her right back.
After they stopped, she just turned and faced him again.
"Sam Winchester, I still can't get over this but what are you doing here?" she asked him gleefully.
"I was in California and remembered what today was and I just had to come down here and pay my respects to Jessica and all and when I was at her grave, I saw Chloe here who showed up and I decided to give her a lift home since I was planning to pay you all a visit anyway" Sam explained.
"After all this time, it's so unexpected yet good to see you again honey, oh, I got to get my husband he would be surprised too" replied Mrs. Travers.
Just then Mr. Travers was heading down the stairs after working in the study as he was an architect.
"Hey, what's all the commotion, I can hear you all, all the way upstairs" he replied.
As he went to the hall, he just glared at Sam who glared right back at Jessica's stepfather who he also looked almost the same the last time he saw him only with more gray in his hair. He looked to be in his late fifties, around Dean's height who was quite well-built and a little on the robust side but not considered fat. He had grayish streaks in his chestnut brown hair, brown eyes which Chloe inherited and was dressed in a grayish flannel shirt and tan trousers. His eyes lit up with the same expression Mrs. Travers, a look of surprise then joy as he came over to where Sam was.
"Oh my, Sam is that you" he cried out.
"Yes dear, Sam came out all this way for Jessica's 10th anniversary and decided to pay us a visit" Mrs. Travers explained as she turned to her husband.
"My gosh, it's been such a long time how have you been boy?" Mr. Travers cried out as he went right over to Sam and gave him a friendly pat on the shoulder and shook his hand rather than give him a hug looking all excited.
"I'm doing fine Mr. Travers, and it's good to see you too" Sam said.
"We never thought in a million years we see you again, I mean we don't know what happened but it's good to see you just the same" Mr. Travers.
Then he glanced over to Dean acknowledging his presence for the first time as Dean had remained silent and the couple had been so excited to see Sam again, they hadn't realized they had not noticed his presence at all.
"And who is this with you?" Mr. Travers asked.
Sam briefly turned to Dean also realizing he was so caught up in the moment, he forgot to introduce him.
"Oh, I'm sorry you all but his is my brother Dean who came out here with me" Sam said.
"Oh, this is the brother you mentioned when we last saw each other, well glad to meet you there, Dean" replied Mr. Travers who then gave him a friendly handshake.
"Yes, the same here Dean" replied Mrs. Travers who then went up to greet Dean after Mr. Travers was finished shaking his hand and she gave him a light pat on the arm.
"Hey, same here, Sam had nothing but nice things to say about Jessica and it's pleasure meeting her parents I'm sorry too for all of your loss even though I only met her once, I know Sam here really cared about her and was grieved after what happened, it took quite a while for him to recover" Dean said giving Sam a nice quick pat on the shoulder and Sam appreciated Dean trying to vouch for him and all.
"We're sure you did Sam, as we all still do, which is why we visit her grave site at the cemetery every year on the date of her accident" Mrs. Travers said bit of sad look on her face as she stopped and paused for a moment. "However, none of her friends has ever showed up to pay their respects it's only been us although" she continued.
"Well, I should have showed up sooner afterall we were more than just friends" Sam explained.
"Hey, all it matters is that you're here now, come lets got to living room and we can all have nice chat, and I can get you both something, food, drinks" Mrs. Travers replied.
"No thanks, Mrs. Travers we already ate" Sam replied although Dean felt like having a beer, but he didn't want to sound pushy.
The Travers soon led both the Winchesters and Chloe into the living room, and they all sat down to talk. Sam explained a bit about why he left two nights before Jessica's death, claiming it was a family issue involving their father who he was estranged to at the time and was quite vague about it. Then after her death, he had to get away and seek out his estranged father again and then just had to take time away from Stanford and traveling around with his family.
He did vaguely mention his father's death and how that changed everything for him as he decided to not to ever go back to Stanford and just continue traveling around with his brother to go on their own journey to find themselves until they settled in Kansas and established a bar business which they run together. Then recently they decided to take a trip to California for a break when Sam remembered that it was ten years since Jessica died and they decided to head in town in order to finally pay their respects which he never got to do before.
The family seem to accept Sam's reasons, but he couldn't help feeling guilty for lying to them a bit. Even when Jessica was alive, he never told her much about his family and kept her in the dark about lot of his background despite her telling him a lot about hers. From what he knew, Jessica's parents divorced when she was very little because her father was always away as a travel journalist sometimes going abroad for a great story and seemed to place his passion for it above his family. Jessica was so young at the time that she barely remembers him leaving.
A few years later, her mother met her stepfather, a good reliable man who was the opposite of her father, an architect who was always there for them as his job didn't require him to constantly leave home and he wouldn't have it any other way. They eventually married and had Chloe and the family was complete. Although Jessica kept her father's surname and called her stepfather by his first name, she felt closer to him than her own father who she didn't see too often growing up maybe a few times a year due to his job.
When she died, he was in Abu Dhabi, Dubai and the last they have heard of him he's was in South Africa. He didn't even attend Jessica's funeral since he didn't hear about her death after the fact and only sent a postcard and a letter giving his condolences and he hasn't even called about her death as he probably forgot what day it was.
Sam also got to learn what the Travers had been up to since he last saw them as Mr. Travers now works from home as an architect in his home office in the study and Mrs. Travers now works part time, three days a week as a teacher at a special needs school. They also talked more about Chloe going to the community college and her art skills and the brothers could sense a bit a tension between Chloe and her parents as it seemed they would prefer she do something else more important. As they all talked and he was learning more about them all over again, Sam couldn't help still feel guilty for not being there for them when Jessica died, it was like he abandoned them in a time of need.
"I want to apologize to you all for not being there for Jess's funeral and all and not visiting any of you afterall you guys were always nice to me whenever we visited" Sam told them.
"Don't fret dear, we may not understand all your reasons but it's water under the bridge now" replied Mrs. Travers.
"Yeah, the same goes for me too. Anyway, interesting you are now running a bar business with your brother, I just didn't picture you the type, and I'm not trying to offend" replied Mr. Travers.
"Hey, I'm not offended, and yes, like I said before my priorities have changed a lot, I'm not the same person I was when you knew me is all I can say and that me and Dean here have been through a lot" replied Sam briefly turning to Dean.
"You ever consider going back to school someday and getting your law degree Sam?" asked Mrs. Travers curiously.
Sam just sighed and shook his head. "No, that chapter of my life is over, there's no going back to that" he told her.
"Are you sure, you know it's never too late, there are plenty of people your age and older going back to school and getting their degrees. I'm just saying is that you don't have to feel that's over for you if there is part of you who wants to give it another go" she told him.
"Mom don't nag him, if Sam is alright doing what he's doing it's not for us to judge" replied Chloe who felt a bit embarrassed by her mother's meddling.
"Hey, I'm not trying to push him to do anything he doesn't want to do. I'm just saying to Sam that you don't have to feel like it's too late for you, since the last time I remember you were so eager about going to law school and all and I mean if there a part of you that wants to give another chance you should take it and not feel it's too late or anything like that" she said.
"I understand, and it's nothing like that, I'm quite satisfied how my life is going right now but thanks again" Sam replied.
"Well, it's your life dear, and your choice just consider what I've said and I will leave it like that" she replied.
"Come on, Chloe is right, no need the press him now, it's his life and every man got to do follow their own path and do their own thing regardless of what others think. That's my motto at least" Mr. Travers added.
They continued to talk on and soon it was almost an hour, so both Sam and Dean decided it was time to go.
"Well, it was nice seeing you again dear after all this time, thanks for dropping by" replied Mrs. Travers.
"You welcome Mrs. Travers as she gave Sam a nice hug and then turned to Dean.
"And nice meeting you too Dean" she told him.
"You too ma'am" said Dean.
"Yeah, it was great seeing you again Sam and seeing you too" said Mr. Travers turning first to Sam then Dean as he gave them both handshakes.
"Anyway, I have to get back to my work in my little study but don't be a stranger, feel free drop by again whenever you're in town" he told them.
"We sure will" said Sam.
Mr. Travers gave them another goodbye and then headed upstairs while Chloe and Mrs. Travers walked them out.
"Hey, thank for giving me that lift and I'm glad I saw you at the grave site and that you came too, it was felt like fate in a way to see you today of all days, it was so cool seeing you again is all I'm saying" Chloe said. "
Yes, nice seeing you too all grown up" Sam said kind of joking.
"Oh, and cool finally meeting your big brother" she told Dean.
"Yeah, cool for me too" Dean told her.
"Well, goodbye Sam and Dean" said Mrs. Travers. "Yeah, see ya" replied Chloe.
"Goodbye you all" Sam said.
"So long" Dean added.
Just then as Chloe along with her mother walked him to the door, Sam couldn't help but notice that tattoo on her shoulder collar again as once again he was getting the feeling that he saw that type of shape before and was having bad vibes about it. It just was bothering him right now that he couldn't figure out where he placed it. However, he didn't mention it all just exited the front door as the two women walked him and Dean out. Then they headed to their car and hopped in driving off.
"Well, I have to admit they are a cool family and all but I am a bit relieved to finally get out of there. I know you liked seeing them all this time and the stepdad kind of cool old dude, but I was feeling a bit of the odd man out there, you know, but hey I liked them, and I could understand why you liked seeing them again. I will also say that mom, she was kind of hot for an older lady, can see where Jessica got her good looks" Dean replied smirking.
"Dean, seriously?" Sam replied rolling his eyes.
"Hey, there's nothing wrong with digging an older woman and thinking she's nice looking which is all I'm saying, besides, I think it was Chloe Jess's baby sister that kind of has a crush on me just by the way she was kind of glancing at me, you know" Dean said still smiling.
"Oh, gross Dean, I don't know what is worse, you drooling over Jess's mom or her baby sister who is still in college" Sam said looking a bit embarrassed by his comment.
"Hey, relax there Mr. Boy Scout, I'm not being pervy or anything, I mean I've outgrown college chicks and all, but I can't help if the little sis has the hots for me" Dean said teasingly.
"I can assure you Dean she doesn't I think that is all in your egotistical one track mind" Sam told him.
"Don't be so sure, anyway, I'm a one-woman man now, ever since I met Ava, she's officially changed me" Dean said proudly.
"Whatever" replied Sam jokingly but as they drove away, he still couldn't help to start thinking about that tattoo Chloe had again, he just couldn't get that image truly out of his mind.
