Chapter 8 Coming Up With A Plan
It was a short while since Chloe went inside that old hangout at the junkyard they're at and both Dean and Sam were getting restless already.
"You know Dean, I wonder what they're doing in there?" Sam asked him.
"Don't know, what they're little fake hocus pocus rituals, some satanic mediating, worshipping some shrine of this Adramalek demon or whatever" Dean replied sarcastically.
"You know this thing is real right, I mean if they branded Chloe and this Drake dude with this sacrificial mark, that means next on their hit list by this demon worshippers. I suspect they're sacrificing new recruits for this Adramalek to gain some magic powers just like Charlie said and the demon gets more stronger each time and we got to stop them" Sam replied.
"Don't worry we will, but I doubt that they're making any human sacrifice with us outside waiting for her and that Drake dude in there with them making him a witness since he's a target too now" Dean said.
"I don't get when do they kill them anyway, Chloe said Ahnika was still alive at their last meeting?" Sam asked.
"Beats me, maybe they did it after the meetings, find a way to lure her here and offed her" said Dean.
"Well, we need to keep an eye on them and that includes now too, I think we should check out what they're doing in there" Sam said.
"You mean, spy?" Dean asked.
"That's exactly what I mean besides, I'm getting restless just standing here and waiting on her" Sam said.
"Yeah, come to think of it, so am I. Okay, Sammy, we'll do it your way" Dean said.
Then the both of them approached the building that looked so old and had some graffiti on it. They both went to one of the dirty looking windows and bowing down they peeked through them making sure not to be seen. They noticed a group of young people other than Chloe and Drake that consisted of three guys and two girls all dressed in black robes and at a table that has candles on them and they seem to be in some kind of meeting. They seemed to be discussing the incident of their now dead former member Ahnika and plans to carry on with their meetings, rituals and their worship of the demon Adramalek which made Sam's eyes lit up. After some time, the meeting just got a bit boring and Dean started to lose interest.
"This is nothing of special just talking about some their little satanic meetings, and mumbo jumbo" he said.
"Just wait Dean" Sam replied who was still listening as they talked about Adramalek, praying to him to seek for answers and their devotion to him.
Chloe for her part was wondering if they should delay more meetings until the Ahnika case is resolved but the other members including Drake didn't agree as they couldn't let Adramalek down. Some time passed on and none of the members noticed Sam and Dean peeking through their window listening this whole time. They did mention that their next midnight ritual will be next week and for all of them to be there. Time did seem to fly by quite fast as they were about to end their meeting and Sam and Dean were both relieved as they were had grown quite bored and they quickly fled from the window and hurried back to the Impala and went inside to appear that they were waiting in the car the whole time. Chloe and Drake walked out together like a couple as both Sam and Dean got out of their cars to greet Chloe.
"So, the meeting is adjourned I guess?" asked Dean as Chloe approached followed by Drake.
"Yes, it's over, I'm ready to go home now" Chloe said.
"Where are all the others, aren't they leaving too?" asked Sam.
"They remained inside to catch up on all the notes that was taking and since we're newbies and all we don't have to worry about all that but they'll be out shortly" said Chloe.
"Hey, you know Chloe, I can still give you that ride home, if that's what you like?" asked Drake trying to persuade Chloe once again to ride with him.
"Oh, that's okay Drake, I did say I'll let Sam and Dean take me home but thanks anyway" she told him.
Drake didn't look to thrilled about hearing that as he glared at Sam and Dean then back at Chloe. "Oh, okay then I still hope to see you tonight" he said.
"You know, Drake tonight isn't a good time, my folks have plans but we can see each other some other time" Chloe said.
Drake again didn't look to thrilled. "Sure, whatever, I'll see you I guess, take care and same to you dudes" he said to Sam and Dean.
"Hey, right back at you dude" replied Dean trying to be a bit sarcastic.
Drake didn't seem to notice and just waved a bit then headed back to his car and got in and left before waving again to Chloe who waved back. Dean and Sam drove Chloe back home as Sam reminded her about his caution of her going out late at night and Chloe agreed once again to stay indoors for a while outside of going out for college.
"Sure thing dad" Chloe said sarcastically as she got out of the car and Sam and Dean got out too and followed her to the front door as Chloe let herself in with a key and they all entered the home.
Once inside, Mrs. Travers went out from the kitchen again to greet her daughter and was surprised to see the Winchester brothers again.
"Sam, you're here, I assumed you two would be heading back to Kansas by now" she replied.
"Well, the thing is we had a bit of change in plans and decided to stay a bit longer" Sam told her.
"Oh, any particular reason?" she asked him.
"Well, Mrs. Travers, being back here and visiting the Stanford campus just brought back some memories, plus I ran into an old friend of mine and Jessica's at Stanford who is now teaching there" Sam said.
"Really, which friend?" asked Mrs. Travers.
"Peyton Goff, she was a close friend of Jessica's, if you remember" Sam told her.
"Yes, I do remember Peyton, I didn't know she was teaching at Stanford, I mean does she live around town?" she asked him.
"Yes, she lives in East Palo Alto and she's an assistant professor at Stanford now" Sam answered.
"That's great, I feel bad not keeping up with Jessie's friends and all but what does that have to do with you staying?" Mrs. Travers asked him.
"I just figured we catch up and told over old times and she can show me around the campus again, like I said before it holds a lot of memories" Sam told her feeling a bit guilty for lying.
"Well, anyway, I wish you the best of luck during your stay and in a way I'm kind of glad. Would you and your brother like to stay for dinner, we'll eat in about 6:00, or you can come back, I'm just getting dinner ready" she told them.
Sam just shook his head. "No thanks, that's okay, Mrs. Travers, but me and Dean already have plans" he told her.
"Well, maybe some other time" she replied with a smile.
Then Mr. Travers came downstairs from his study where he was doing his work and he also talked to the guys for a few minutes. Then both the Winchesters said their goodbyes and left and headed back to the car. Back at the motel they first phoned Adam and Charlie to check on them and see how their doing and letting them know they will return home once they solved this latest case. Then they tried to figure out their next move which was to return to that hideout at night to see if those occult members are still there and what they are planning next. They did the typical thing, had their dinner at the restaurant, then when it got quite dark, they headed back to the hideout at the junkyard to investigate. The parked somewhere unseen so nobody would know they were there. Then they got out and snuck back to the old shack and peeked inside the windows making sure nobody saw them.
However, the place was now totally empty, so they decided to go inside and take a look around. Once inside, they noticed the place has a table with black tablecloth covering it and candles laying on them that were used earlier that day and a large gold cup now empty. Some drawings of occult symbols on the rusty wall and there was also book laying around and Sam looked through it and found drawings of strange symbols and writings about demons and the occult. There was also a huge trunk on the floor and Dean went to open it only to find some black robes inside.
"Why do you think they left them here inside this old trunk?" Sam wondered.
"Beats me, maybe they didn't want their folks to stumble upon their little demon-worshiping Halloween costumes, I figure. I'm sure Chloe wouldn't want dear old mom and dad stumbling upon her little Halloween get-up if they for any reason decided to raid the bedroom closet" Dean replied.
"I guess, there's nothing much around here" Sam said.
"Well, maybe there's something" said Dean as he noticed a notebook laying around an old dirty looking desk and he picked it up and looked through it.
"What is it?" asked Sam curious.
Dean looked through the notebook and skimmed over it quick. "It seems to be some notes on rituals and spells. It mentions the sacrificial ritual where they kill the latest victim, then spill their blood into a cup and perform some chanting as they summon their demon Adramalek. He apparently gives some special powers in exchange for their sacrifices and total devotion to him" he answered.
Sam just sighed. "It just kills me that Chloe is mixed up in all of this garbage. We got to stop these demon worshipping freaks, they definitely had something to do with that chick's murder she could be next" he said.
"Hey, we will Sam, it's just a matter of time. We've already warned Chloe to stay put at nights for now and from what we know it's at midnight when they make these sacrifices and there clearly not making one tonight since it's almost midnight and none of those freaks are here probably biding their time" Dean said.
"So, what do we do now?" Sam asked.
"We just keep tabs on them, spy on them, keep coming out here before midnight to see if they are having their 'special meeting' and we will be able to stop them if they do" Dean said.
"Hope so" said Sam.
"I know so Sam, we'll save Chloe no matter what. Anyway, there is nothing much we can do now but just head back to the motel" Dean said.
So, they put everything they looked at back and made it looked like nothing was moved. Then they went back to the car and drove back to the motel and got some sleep. The next morning, they got up got breakfast at the diner, called Adam and Charlie, the usual stuff and then headed back to the junkyard to spy on those occult members but they place was empty again, so they left. They didn't even know the name of the members but Sam figured he will get that info from Chloe but he will have to ask her in a way that she's not suspicious. About a quarter of eleven, Sam decided to phone up Peyton who would be at the Stanford Campus.
"Hello Sam, you're still here?" she asked him.
"Yes, me and Dean decided to stay a bit longer than we planned, but I still would like to catch up and talk if that's okay maybe on your lunch break?" Sam suggested.
"Yeah, that would be great, I can't talk long, my next class will be in about fifteen minutes" she said. "
How about, I show up there about noon and we can have lunch together" Sam replied.
"That would be nice, just meet me at the main entrance and we walk together at the dining hall" she told him.
"Fine" Sam told her.
"Hey, would you like me to get you some lunch since you're not a faculty member or a student?" she asked him.
"No, that's okay I'll bring my own lunch but thank" Sam said.
"Fine, so see you at noon?" she replied.
"Sure" Sam said.
They said their goodbyes and when it was getting close the time, Dean drove Sam over to campus again and dropped him off at the main entrance and promised to pick him up when it was over and then drove off. Sam then saw Peyton standing at the main entrance to the campus, and he walked over to her and they greeted each other then she walked him to one of the dining halls and they found a table. Then Peyton went over to the counter to get her food while Sam had his lunch in a bag from a diner he went to before heading to the campus took out his lunch which was subway sandwich, a small bag of potato chips and a long paper cup of Pepsi. Peyton came back with her food she was carrying in a tray and sat down across from Sam at the round table.
Soon the two started eating their meal as Sam explained to her why he was staying longer which he had to tell her a lie about being back there brought back old memories of Jessica and wanted to stick around a bit longer to find closure which as he couldn't tell her the truth. Peyton seemed quite understanding as she listened.
"Well, I think if that's what you need to do then you should do it, whatever is best" she told him as she took a sip of her drink.
Sam paused a bit as he thought about Chloe and wondered if he could confide in Peyton a little about her without giving too much information.
"You know, Peyton I got to get something off my chest" he told her.
"What is it?" she asked as she stopped eating her food looking all attentive.
"Well, I mentioned I visited Jessica's family after running into Chloe at her gravesite, and yesterday while me and Dean were up at Los Altos, we drop by the college she goes to, to give her a lift. I learned that she is mixed up in this local occult, she even had me and Dean drop her off to their hangout in an old junkyard and all, and I couldn't help be concerned" Sam replied.
Peyton just glared processing all the details he was giving her.
"Concerned? Well, I can kind of understand anyone being concerned about an occult, but you know some of these groups are harmless, just a group of kids who are fascinated in the occult, black magic, wicca and don't take it too seriously just a new phase they're going through as long as they are not hurting anybody including themselves. Do you think this group is doing something dangerous?" she replied.
"That's the thing, I'm worried that she might be getting herself into something that isn't good, I don't know too much about this occult she's in, but I did learn that a local girl was part of the group has been missing and the news reported to finding her dead body recently in a ditch, she had been murdered. I even asked Chloe about her and she said she knew her from their group and she thought that she just took off" Sam told her relieved to get this all of his chest to someone other than Dean.
"I think I did hear something about that on the news too, and that's so terrible and tragic, that poor girl but are you saying this occult had something to do with it? I mean Sam that's a serious accusation and you might just be jumping to the gun here" Peyton said.
"I know, but it's just a coincidence that not only is she from the same occult as Chloe is in and I also saw a photo of that girl on the news and she had the exact same tattoo that Chloe has. She told me it was a brand she got as new recruit after drawing up a special card that recruits have to do. I've seen that tattoo before from a book I read on the occults and it is a mark of sacrifice to demons. I know that sounds crazy and all but it all gave me a bad feeling" Sam told her.
Peyton paused for another moment in thought, then glared at Sam again. "If you really feel this concerned maybe you should take it up with her parents and let them deal with it. I mean there isn't much you can do Sam, and you really don't have any proof this occult she's mixed up in was involved in that poor girl's death. Remember Sam, you're not a cop" she told him.
Sam kind of smirked a bit, thinking if she only knew. Of course he wasn't a cop but he's a hunter who works and solves cases the same as a cop and sometimes even impersonates one.
"Yeah, I know I'm not a cop, but I usually trust my instincts and I just wish there was a way I could reason with her that this group may be bad news and to get away from it, her being Jessica's sister and all" Sam replied.
"So, that's it, you want to rescue Jessica's little sister since you weren't able to rescue her, kind of like compensation" Peyton said as she took another sip of her drink.
Sam just nodded his head a bit. "Maybe you can say that. It doesn't matter what you call it, all I know I feel like I should at least try to reach her if I feel she is getting into something bad and could do her harm" he said.
"Hey, I understand and it's not that I'm not sympathetic, but you got to know that it's not really up to you nor is it on you Sam. Chloe isn't some kind of tool to make up for what you think you couldn't do for Jessica" Peyton told him.
"I understand that and all but I could at least try to help Chloe. I feel if Jessica was here, she would want to help her too and do whatever she could to reach out to her and lure her away from a possible dangerous path, I just know she would and since she's not around I think maybe I could. It may be none of my business and you may think I'm overstepping into something that's not my place but I just don't feel in good conscience to just leave this alone. I guess in a way I feel that I am honoring Jess by helping her sister and it would benefit Chloe too" Sam told her.
Peyton who had taken another bite of her meal as Sam talked just sighed as she swallowed her food. "Alright Sam, then if you really feel this way, then you just have to do whatever you feel is right, what your instincts are telling you and perhaps you're right. Maybe you can do try to do what Jess would do if she were here" she told him.
"I hope so" Sam replied as he took a sip of his Pepsi.
"I suppose if anybody could help her you could, you always had that way of reasoning to people even back in college, that's one of the things Jessica loved about you" said Peyton.
Sam just smiled. "Thanks, you know I also recall you always being a good listener and easy to talk to yourself" he replied back.
"Well, I'm glad to be an ear to talk to Sam" she replied, then the two of them just continued their chat and as they finished their lunch.
They talked on longer than they expected and Peyton checked her watch and realized the time and that she usually heads back to her classroom to go over her work before her next class which was at 2:00pm and it was almost 1:00pm. So, they both decided to head out as Peyton took her tray and stack them where the used trays are and Sam threw his bag into the garbage can. As they both headed outside, they prepared to part ways with her going back to her classroom.
"Thanks a lot Peyton, it was good talking to you. You knew just what to say, it really helped" Sam told her.
"Anytime, and if any other time you need a good listener while you staying here just give me a call" Peyton said.
"That I'll do" Sam replied.
After saying their goodbyes, Peyton walked back to the building where her class was and Sam headed back to the main entrance and took out his phone and called Dean who came in got him in less than fifteen minutes and soon they headed back to the motel. On the drive back there, Dean filled Sam in on going back to the occult hideout but it was empty plus and he didn't find anything different.
"So, how do we go about finding out who these occult freaks are, I mean we can get an invite at Jessica's folks place and ask Chloe about them once we get her alone" Dean suggested.
Sam just sighed. "I don't know, Chloe would start to wonder why we are so interested, I mean we're not cops or anything" he told him.
"We can be subtle, just remind her not to go out and lightly question when they have their nighty rituals" Dean replied.
"I suppose, or we can trail her friend Drake, and see where he goes at night. I doubt he'll stay in despite what Chloe tells him, he doesn't seem like the cautious type. Of course, we'll have to find out where he lives, and it would too suspicious if we asked Chloe so we can ask Charlie for a favor using her computer hacking skills" Sam said.
"Perfect, and we might have to just go to the hideout every night and see if they all show up" Dean suggested.
"But how long can we keep that up, it could be a week until they have their nightly human sacrifice or two weeks" Sam replied.
"We'll think of something, we always do" Dean said.
They discussed the next strategy some more while waiting for Charlie's call to give them info on Drake. As the hours passed on and it was close to 3:00 and Sam decided to call Chloe to let her know that they would like to come over to dinner afterall, but stopped when she sounded frantic.
"Chloe, what's wrong?" he asked real concerned.
"Sam, it's Drake, I just came from his place, he didn't come home last night, I'm really worried" was all she said.
