Chapter 14 Having The Talk
Sometime had passed while Dean and Ava had gone to the guest room and engaged in their lovemaking. Dean had been a bit nervous knowing Ava's parents were in another room under the same roof as them while he and was having sex with their daughter although Ava had made it clear that her parents respect her love life plus the door was locked. They cuddled a bit for a while after their lovemaking and just talked and laughed glowing like they usually do after some good sex. Then Ava urged them to get up and join their parents in the den as she knew they would want to get to know Dean some more. They got dressed and made the bed up together, put Christmas gifts on the dresser and then just casually walked out of the room and headed for the den where her parents were just sitting there on the couch watching TV with Sparky curled up on the floor nearby. When they noticed Dean and Ava they looked up and smiled with welcoming look on their faces.
"Well, it's nice that you've joined us I guess you got settled in" said Sharon with a smile.
"Yeah, ma'am quite settled" remarked Dean hiding his nervousness.
"Me and Dean just wanted to have some alone time together, mom" Ava replied.
"Oh, of course we understand you wanting to have some time with your guy all to yourself, me and your dad were young once too you know" said Sharon as both she and Jim had looks on their faces hinting that they knew what they were doing as Dean continued to hide the awkwardness he was having not to make it so obvious and Ava was just amused by Dean's discomfort.
"Anyway, you thought we know just join you guys here" Ava replied.
"Well, we're just watching an old movie, there isn't anything else on that we want to watch but you know I'm about to start fixing dinner now anyway, Ava come and help me in the kitchen" Sharon said as she got up from the couch.
Ava looked unsure not wanting to leave Dean's side.
"Right now, but…." Ava replied glancing at Dean but Jim interrupted.
"Go on honey, I would like to take use this moment to have some alone time with Dean anyway, just us guys" Jim said.
Dean felt nervous again, being alone with the dad and worrying what they are going to talk about now that Ava won't be around to stick up for him. Ava also seemed reluctant to leave Dean alone in the den.
"Come on Ava, it's alright, Dean will be alright here with your father and we can take the time in the kitchen to have some girl time" said Sharon.
"Okay mom but dad promise to go easy on him" said Ava.
"I'm not going to bite's the boys head off for Christ's sake just a nice conversation, he'll be in one peace after I'm done I promise" Jim said.
"Okay" Ava said then she turned to face Dean.
"I'll go and help my mom in the kitchen and don't worry about my dad here, his bark is worst than his bite" Ava said.
"I'll keep that mind, besides don't worry about me, I could use the time to get to know your dad more man to man" Dean replied.
"Okay if he you need anything just holla" said Ava.
"He'll be alright Ava, not I'm going to interrogate him" said Jim.
"Come on Ava leave your dad and Dean alone to get more acquainted" said Sharon.
"Okay mom I'm coming" Ava said as she followed Sharon out of the room and into the kitchen.
Dean just glanced at Jim still feeling nervous like a scared kid although he was hiding it. "Come sit down her son, take a load off and we can talk" Jim replied in a friendly tone. So, Dean went over and sat on the couch next to Jim. Sparky continued to be curled up on the floor just turned his head to glance at Dean. "Wish me luck buddy" Dean thought to as he briefly glanced at the dog back then turned to Jim trying to be prepared for whatever he will through at him.
"Okay, now the womenfolk have left and now it's just us men" Jim replied as Dean felt like this was going to be a typical fatherly "What are your intentions towards my daughter" conversation and he just took a breath a bit prepared for whatever Jim throws at him.
"What would you like to talk about sir?" asked Dean although he already had a good idea what Ava's dad wanted to discuss and he felt a lump in this throat.
"I think you already have a feeling what this is about son" Jim replied looking at him now a bit more seriously. Dean swallowed and felt another lump in his throat.
"Yeah, afraid so" he murmured under his breath.
"You say something?" asked Jim.
"Yeah, I said I think I know what this is about" Dean told him trying to contain his nervousness.
"Good, then we don't need to beat around the bush" said Jim and took a breath before he spoke again.
"I'm aware you and Ava have been together for quite a while and being both of you being hunters she's told us that she feels a connection with you that she hadn't felt with any man she's been in a relationship in the past. And from what she's also told us, you are a very special person in her life and she feels lucky to have you in it" he went on.
Dean feeling a bit touched by all this didn't really know what to say but he knew he had to say something.
"Well, Jim I feel the same way she's a quite a special person in my life more than any other woman I've known" was all he said.
Jim just sat up and gave him a more serious look.
"Look, Dean, my daughter has strong feelings for you from the way she's talked about you when she visits us and the way her eyes lit up when you came here to meet us. It's been a long while since she's brought a man home for us to meet, in fact she has never brought anyone home since she decided to follow this path as a hunter. And I admit we when she first told us about you, we weren't too comfortable with the idea of her getting involved with another hunter especially after what happened with the last hunter she was involved with, no offense. I mean I know you came from family of hunters in fact my dad was familiar with your grandfather Samuel Campbell and we've heard of John Winchester and how winded up marrying you mother, Samuel's daughter and all. I understand the baggage that comes from being raised by a family of hunters believe me, and I left behind my hunting past which was my family's legacy to have a normal life with my own family and I was hoping one day Ava would outgrow the hunting life and settle down with normal average joe and possibly raise a normal family of her own" he told Dean.
Dean took on of this in stride as he listened carefully to what Ava's father was telling him and he just nodded.
"I understand your concerns there, Jim but trust me when I say that Ava is a strong woman who knows what she wants and is a darn good hunter and we even did cases together and we have each other's backs. I would never let anything bad happen to her nor would she me" Dean told him.
"I don't expect anything less from Ava, our girl is a very resourceful woman which she gets from both her mom and me and she has the hunting genes from both sides of her family, we learned not to worry ourselves so much when she's on a case even though sometimes we can't help ourselves. Now we are getting better at trusting that she can take care of herself and others too, but my main concern is where does your relationship stand right now, I mean it's unconventional in itself with both of you being hunters and all with all the baggage that comes with it but from what I understand you two mainly just get together once in a while when not on a case and spend some days together before parting ways. But how long is that going to last, I know my daughter well enough that her feelings are you are quite strong and that setup isn't going to be enough for her forever, I don't know if it's enough for you" Jim replied.
Dean once again took another breath understanding where Ava's father was getting at since he always wondered the same thing himself plenty of times.
"Hey look, I know our relationship isn't very conventional, hell nothing about our lives is conventional but for us what is unconventional or not normal for others is quite normal for us. As for me and Ava, none of us can predict the future, but we decided not to worry about that all and just concentrate on the present and see what happens, but the only thing I can tell you is Ava means a lot to me and can't imagine her not being in my life" he told him.
Jim just sighed not seeming to satisfied by that answer as he apparently wanted to hear something quite different.
"Well, Dean I appreciate your honesty and all, but I still don't think that's enough. You see, I happen to know my daughter's feelings are so strong I believe she is in love with you" Jim told him as Dean's eyes lit up as he never heard the L word ever being brought up not even between him and Ava. "And I want to know if you feel the same way about my daughter or if you have any plans of what your future with her will be?" he went on.
Dean just swallowed again as he paused processing what he just heard and how to respond. Meanwhile, in the kitchen Ava and her mother were preparing to cook dinner and getting all the items they would need and all and started fixing the meals.
"I just hope daddy isn't being too rough on Dean, interrogating him with the typical what are you intentions toward my daughter line" Ava said to her mother as they were able to talk while they work.
"Don't worry about your father, he'll be reasonable and fair to Dean and he's just wants to get to know his little girl's boyfriend a bit better by having some alone time with him. I mean it's been a long time since you brought a young man home for us to meet dear" Sharon told her in a soothing tone as she was trying reassure Ava.
"I know mom, I guess it's been a long while since I met anybody that special" replied Ava.
Sharon stopped what she was doing and turned to her daughter. "You know Ava, I also thought this would be a good time for us women to have a mother daughter talk about your relationship with Dean" she said in a more serious tone.
"Talk about what?" Ava said getting concerned that her mother will criticize something about Dean or their relationship since she knew her parents were never crazy about her getting involved with a fellow hunter.
"From what I've seen I think Dean is a decent young man. He's like plenty of the men on my side of the family who were all hunters, they live that like with a passion that it's more a way of living than a job. Although we would have preferred you to have met a 9-5 type of guy and settle down with we are not against Dean, I mean the men in my family have managed to raise families while hunting but it's not an easy thing to do" Sharon went on.
"Raising families, that's jumping the gun a bit mom" Ava replied.
"Hey, look just hear me out, I just want to know where do you see this relationship heading in the near future, do you see any future with Dean, I mean just seeing each other once and a while won't be enough if you have strong feelings for him" Sharon said.
Ava stopped what she was doing too as she knew where this discussion was going and was prepared to respond.
"So that's what this is about, you want to know what our intentions are towards each other?" Ava asked.
Sharon just nodded. "Yes, if you put it like that. Look Ava I can tell that your feelings for Dean are very strong and just by the way you talk about him when you visit or how you look at him today, he's someone very special to you, so I can't help but ask if this relationship is headed to something more lasting, can you really see a future with Dean?" she said.
"Mom, we haven't talked about that yet, I mean we are just enjoying living in the moment for now and see where it takes us" Ava said even though a part of her was also thinking about her future with Dean.
"Honey, I understand but it's been months now, you have to have some idea. I just don't want you to open your heart again to a man, another hunter at that only to get hurt again" Sharon told her.
"Hey, Dean is nothing like Jack. Jack couldn't open himself up to anyone but Dean he's open himself up to me and I know he really cares about me and he doesn't have to tell me, he shows me and how he treats me" Ava said.
"Well, does he care about you enough to be willing to have something more permanent with you, I not talking marriage right now but something more than just what you're doing right know with occasional get togethers" said Sharon.
Ava swallowed as she knew what her mother was implying and she felt anxious inside because she knew this the subject would come up someday, she was hoping it would come up later. "You mean me and Dean living together?" she asked.
Sharon just nodded. "Well, I was thinking of you taking your relationship to the next level to something more long-lasting and yes that could be a start, have you considered any of this?" she asked her daughter.
Ava looked a bit awkward like she was a teenager again talking about sex for the first time with her mother but this was something much more. "Mom, like I said before, me and Dean haven't talked about it any of it I mean this all seems so sudden, I don't want to pressure Dean into anything" she said.
"Nobody is saying anything about pressuring Dean, but I feel like further down the line, you are going to want something more than what you're getting from him right now. Be honest hun, do you see Dean as someone you could possibly have a future with or are you really okay with just this arrangement you have with him now to continue on for years even?" Sharon asked Ava in a serious tone.
Ava paused as she thought about all of this briefly turning her head away then she turned back towards her mother.
"Mom, I do care a lot about Dean and can't picture him not in my life right now, he means so much to me" she responded.
"Do you love him Ava?" Sharon asked her.
Ava was a bit taken aback hearing the L word for the first time since that never came up with Dean, they never ever talked about love. She just paused again as if she had to think it over.
"Do you honey?" asked her mother again.
Ava looked up at her mother again and just nodded.
"Yes, mom I think I do" she replied in a soft voice as she was still processing hearing herself admit this for the first time.
But the fact was it was true, she was in love with Dean Winchester and admitting felt so scary to her yet wonderful.
"The thing is now, do you know if Dean feels the same way?" Sharon asked her.
Ava just looked awkward again not knowing what to respond as she was now wondering the same thing. Does Dean love her, she knows he cares about her and she would trust him with her life but does he love her like she does him? It scared Ava even more wondering if her love for Dean was one-sided and not returned on his part, maybe right now he strongly cares for her and maybe in time he will feel the same way or maybe he never will at all, all of this was causing her to feel a lump in her chest. She turned to her mother again.
"I think so mom" was all she could say even though she wasn't sure herself.
"You think so? Well maybe this conversation is something that you really should have with Dean" Sharon suggested.
"I know mom, but I'm certain he feels the same way after everything we've been together and what we mean to each other" Ava said despite not being entirely sure.
"Well, I hope for your sake he does dear but if he does then what?" Sharon told replied.
"What do you mean?" Ava asked.
"I mean now that you just admitted that you love him and you think he feels the same way, you two are definitely going to have to discuss what this means in your relationship and if it will go forward. I assume you do want it to go forward now" Sharon told her.
Ava just sighed. "Yes, mom I admit, I do want to move forward with Dean but I won't pressure him" she told her.
"Hey, if he really feels the same way he wouldn't see it as pressuring, he would want to have something than just this current arrangement you have" Sharon said in a more serious tone.
Ava briefly paused and turned away then turned to face her mother again.
"Mom, I really think that his is something me and Dean need to deal with just between us and I will talk to him about it soon" Ava replied.
"Good, I really think you both really need to talk about your relationship as soon as possible dear" Sharon said as she began fixing the meals again and Ava started helping her again.
"Okay, mom we will now are you through interrogating me about my relationship?" Ava replied wanted to end this conversation already.
Sharon just looked up again at Ava from while fixing dinner. "No, not quite, there is another point I want to make" she replied.
"What now mom?" asked Ava who was getting exasperated with this conversation but wasn't going to tell her mother that.
Sharon just took stopped what she was doing again and faced her daughter.
"Even if you two decide to make it more permanent, what kind of life will you have together?" Sharon asked her.
Ava also stopped what she was doing again and looked up at her mom taken aback again. "Mom, it is way too soon to be talking something so far ahead" she explained.
Sharon just shook her head. "No, dear I think it's quite it's a great time to think about this after you just admitted that you love Dean and he may love you, it's good to think that far ahead in your future together and be realistic" she replied.
Ava just thought for moment on what to say to all of what her mom is heaping on her. "Well, if you need an answer, I will say we will have the same kind of life we already have" she said.
"That's what concerns me a bit dear" Sharon told her looking all serious again.
"Why?" Ava asked her although she her mother was going to bring up her family history again.
"I know from experience growing up that being a hunter and being raised by one is hard enough but managing a relationship and a long-lasting one and balancing your life as a hunter will make it super hard especially in your case with both of you being hunters with all the burdens and baggage that go with it" Sharon told her.
Ava sighed again thinking of course she had to bring this up. "Come on, mom, you know hunting is our lives, plus me and Dean already shared in some of our adventures together it's what drew us even closer. Besides, I could always work cases with Dean and Sam since I done it before, or if Sam needs a break or is unavailable for whatever reason, it can be just me and Dean, we always have each other's back and I trust him with my life" she told her.
"I understand that all dear, but I think it would be wrong for me not to point out that the both of you traveling around the country at a minute's notice whenever there is a case, risking your lives and hoping to return to each other in one piece will put have its pitfalls, and put a lot of stress and burdens in your relationship" Sharon told her.
"Mom, I already know this and but again this is between me and Dean to work out and after all the dangers we've already been through together I think we can overcome a lot of obstacles in our way" Ava said.
"Okay, dear but I just need to remind you to take it from me who grew up with all of this" Sharon said as Ava felt like rolling her eyes and said to herself "she's going to go there" as she knew what her mother was going to say now.
Sharon just went on, "I can recall how your granddad would just take off unexpectedly for a case and be gone for several days sometimes more than a week, leaving your grandmom with us kids managing the home and running the store. We kids pitched in to help her out but still it was difficult at times when we didn't know when or if he would return and sometimes he even missed a birthday, some holidays, a school play, or baseball game, or even their wedding anniversary. I mean it wasn't easy but they did manage to overcome it in the end but not without a lot of baggage" she finished.
"Mom, me and Dean will deal with all of this when the time is right" Ava said.
"Well, I know we, you and your father wanted something much different with our family having both been raised in the hunting family, I mean your dad even stopped hunting with his family, settled in the town my family lived found a job and when we got married and decided to raise our own family, we vowed we would give you a much more normal life than we did, all least as normal as we could give, he gave up his hunting ways to provide for us, and I wonder if Dean would ever be able to do that with you?" Sharon told her.
"Mom, I would never expect Dean to give up hunting for me, that is all who he is, to him telling him to stop hunting would be like telling him to stop breathing, I could never ask him to give all that up and he would never expect that from me either" Ava fired back.
Sharon sighed this time not wanting to turn this too much into a debate and ruin their time together. "Okay, okay but, maybe we don't need think that far ahead but you do need to think a little further with your life with Dean and what it entails before you take it any further, where you two will live for one thing, do you plan on moving this old abandoned bunker with him and his brothers and female friend that used to belong to the Men of Letters, you know I still couldn't believe it when you told me that or that his grandfather was a Man of Letters" she replied.
"Mom, that bunker is the size of a mansion and ten people could live there, I mean there is plenty of room for me and Dean to have our privacy, trust me all the times I've stayed there, I never felt that it was too crowded, it's Dean and Sam's home and their legacy and I won't expect him to give it all up for me or us. Besides I like Sam and their brother Adam and Charlie, they're really great, that wouldn't be a problem for me when the time comes but I think we need to step back a little right, just take baby steps and I will talk it over with Dean about our relationship going forward and what that could mean but I'm not rushing to live together or anyone giving up hunting" Ava insisted.
"Okay, dear I will back off a little, it's just me and your dad are so have always wondered when or if you would meet the right man and when you do, he turns out to be a hunter too" said Sharon.
Ava just smiled at her mom. "I understand, mom really I do, and trust me when I say Dean is probably the most perfect for me as you can get and don't worry we will be handle anything that is thrown to us be it danger or our relationship" she told her.
Sharon sighed again. "You know, I remember when the last time you talked about your hunting life, you said that you would continue hunting until you were ready for a change in your life and that included meeting the right man and now that you met the right guy, it still makes me wonder is this a new change in your life?" she asked her daughter.
Ava just paused again thinking for a moment thinking on how to respond to that.
