Chapter 21 Preparing For A New Mission

Within seconds of Castiel having transported Sam and Ava inside the Impala back to the bunker, they were now in sitting in the car inside the bunker's garage. Then all of three of them exited the car and headed back inside the bunker where they were greeted by the others who had been waiting for them all this time quite anxiously. After gathering them in the main room, Sam and Ava both explained what happened, filling them on everything they knew. After they finished, the others were not too thrilled of Dean being left behind with those reapers as leverage while Sam and Ava enlisted Castiel's help to find someone else to replace him. Castiel had a real serious and firm look on his face and let them know he would do anything to save Dean.

"You know, I will be willing to go and Dean's place to become the new Death, if that's what it takes, there's no problem" he told them.

"We can't let you do that, Cas" Sam replied.

"But I want to, if that's the only way to save Dean, I will go in a heartbeat" Castiel told him.

"I appreciate the gesture Cas, but you're like family to us, we wouldn't want you making that sacrifice" Sam told him again.

Ava just nodded. "Yeah, Dean wouldn't possibly want you going in his place, he wants us to find anybody else" she added.

"Besides, I told them you could help us find somebody else who could take his place which was the only way to convince them to let us go and they are only giving us three nights starting tomorrow, so please Cas, if you know anybody that could help us any old angel buddies, or other reapers, right now I will even be willing to beg to Crowley" Sam finished.

Castiel just paused as if he was in thought at that moment.

"Please, Cas, is there anybody you can contact to help us" Adam pleaded.

"The thing is guys, most the angels all returned to heaven any others that remained behind are now fallen angels and no longer have their grace and would be hard to find them and I don't think any of the other reapers will want the role, or they would have volunteered, despite the power that comes with being Death not many reapers want the responsibilities and the burdens of it as he is the presider of all the reapers, but I'm thinking" he said as he started to pause again.

Just then his eyes lit up like he just thought of something.

"What, what is it Cas, did you think of someone?" Charlie asked before Sam or anyone else a chance to ask.

Castiel continued to be in thought then he turned and faced everybody else.

"Cas, what tell us did you come up with someone?" Sam urged him.

"This isn't a guarantee, but I suddenly remembered an old acquaintance, Zadkiel" Castiel told them.

They all glanced at each other looking confused.

"Who?" asked Adam.

"Zadkiel, he's what you call a Grigori" Castiel said as Sam's eyes lit up while the others continued to look confused.

"What they heck is a Grigori?" asked Adam.

Sam just turned to Castiel.

"I'll let Cas here explain to you all" he told them then Castiel went on.

"Grigoris are an elite class of powerful angels and were the first to arrive on earth thousands of years ago to protect mankind, but unfortunately, they all began to fall from grace, if you pardon the expression, and started feeding on human souls to retain their heavenly powers. The other angels killed many of them off and there are only small numbers left" Castiel explained.

"Oh my, you mean angels were on earth thousands of years ago and you say they fed on human souls?" asked Gwen looking quite amazed on what she heard.

Castiel nodded and said, "that's right".

"Well, I can believe it, of course I can believe anything now, reapers, Death why not angels on earth" replied Madame Bess who had been quiet up to now.

"Yeah, me too, nothing else surprises me anymore after all the things Dean's told me but then again, I hunt monsters for a living" Ava added.

"So, are you saying you can get one of these Grigoris to take Dean's place?" asked Charlie.

"They don't seem the be the nice type from what you just told us about feeding on human souls" Adam added.

"Hey guys, just let him finish" Sam cried out then turned to Castiel. "Go on Cas" he told him.

Castiel just went on with his story. "Anyway, I was about to say, yes the few ones that are around don't care for humans and will feed on their souls when it suits them, but there maybe one that could be persuaded to help us" he told them.

"You mean this Zadkiel?" Sam asked urgently.

Castiel just nodded his head. "Yes, I had the fortune to come across him when I was trapped in purgatory during the time I was separated from Dean and again when I remained behind" he finished.

"There's another one of these angels in purgatory, but how?" Sam asked.

"You see, Zadkiel didn't share his fellow angels' disdain for humanity and disapproved of their actions to take human souls. He felt it went against everything they stood for. He felt disillusioned by everything, the angels, the human world, heaven, God, just everything and when the other angels came and started wiping out the Grigoris, he managed to flee to purgatory as an escape from it all. When I met him in that place, he helped me out, sheltered me from the other creatures and he lives there as a recluse" Castiel finished.

"I've heard the stories before, about you and Dean being trapped in such a place, it's still quite amazing, I always felt such a place could exist" Madame Bess replied.

"Yeah, I recall the crazy stories Dean would tell me and he mentioned you two being stuck for a year in that place, I'm mean talk about wow" Adam exclaimed.

Sam not interested in listening to any of this wanted to talk about his Zadkiel the Grigori again. "But Cas, do you really think this Zadkiel will help, from what you told us, he has turned his back on everything" he said.

"I know, but from the last time I saw him, he did hint that if there was any good reason to return to earth like feeling a true purpose, then he might. I mean perhaps taking on the role as the new Death could give him that purpose" he told Sam.

"Are you sure about all of this?" Sam asked him not wanting to give his hopes up too high.

"I can't guarantee, but it's worth a try, I will do whatever it takes to convince him" Castiel said.

"We all pray that you can" said Ava.

"I will definitely pray you can pull this off" Gwen said.

"Hey, do whatever it takes to free Dean" said Adam.

"I really hope so" said Castiel looking a bit conflicted.

"Well, I know you can do it and I'll help, we won't stop until we can, I don't care if we have to literally dragged him back kicking and screaming" Sam said serious.

"That's goes double for me, hey I be willing put a blade to this Zadkiel's throat and making him return with us if it means getting Dean back" Ava said with a real serious like.

Gwen sort of gasp at the thought. "I hope you don't really have to go that far" she told them.

"Hopefully we will be able to convince this Zadkiel angel but if not, I'm willing to do what it takes" Sam said.

Castiel just shook his head. "That won't be necessary, like I said before, if we can't convince Zadkiel to return with us and take Dean's place, I will step in and do so myself" he told them all.

"Cas, that's not going to happen, we won't let you do that no matter what, we just gotta get this Zadkiel dude to step up, no matter what so help me, I won't leave purgatory, without him" Sam said sternly.

"So, it's all set you going to this place huh?" Adam asked.

"Yes, Adam that's the case, I've been this place before when I was on a mission you can say and know some parts around" Sam told him.

"Yeah, I remember it was about the performing some trials and you went to hell through that place to retrieve your old friend Bobby as I remember" Gwen said as she kept track of all that Sam told her about his past adventures.

"Yes dear, you told that story to me too and still have a hard time picturing it just like the first time but believe anything when it comes to you guys" Madame Bess added.

"But how are you going to get there at all?" asked Charlie.

"The same way I got there the last time, which was a from a reaper who are the only ones that can transport you to that place" Sam said.

"Of course the reapers, the only ones we know so far are the ones that have Dean" Charlie said.

"Well, that just means we have to contact them and ask them to bring one to escort us to purgatory" Sam said.

"I hate the idea of having to ask a thing from those creeps" said Ava.

"Me too, but we that's the only way we get into purgatory so we got to" Sam answered.

"But will they be willing to help you all?" asked Gwen.

"If they want us to get them the new Death, I think they will do whatever it takes" Sam said.

"So when do we go?" asked Ava.

"They said they will give us three days and we have until midnight the final day so s starting tomorrow, so I think we should head prepare early in the morning, right now I think we could all use a good rest so that we will be fully ready for our journey" Sam said then he turned to Castiel.

"I'm just wondering Cas, since the last time you were trapped there you, lost a lot of your powers, do you think you will be able to keep your powers long enough to find this Zadkiel?" he asked him.

"I'll be alright for just three days, so yes it'll be okay" said Castiel.

"And you know where this Zadkiel is?" he asked him again.

Castiel nodded. "Yes, as I recall he lives pretty far off as a recluse and I could transport us there if I need to" he told them.

"Well, I don't know if I can get any shut eye, but I will try. I do have to ask if you mind if I stay here for tonight, I know I could ask Castiel to transport me back to my van which is back in Arizona outside a motel, but I'm not worried about it being stolen since I have a alarm and all and I just don't feel like being alone after everything" Ava said to Sam.

Sam nodded. "Of course you can stay here tonight, plus it would be better if you would since we will be leaving in the morning" he told her.

"What about us Sam, what do you want us to do?" asked Gwen.

"You all should stay here at least until we get back from our mission, I will prefer if you did just to keep you out of the harm's way of those reapers who know where you live and could come after you all as leverage" Sam said.

"But I'm sure they wouldn't do that now since they let you go to find a someone to take Dean's place" said Madame Bess.

"Yeah, but I just want to be on the safe side, I promise after this blows over you can return home" Sam said.

"Well at least let me close up my shop until then" Madame Bess replied.

"Fine ma'am Castiel could take you back to your shop and close it and bring you back here just like before, won't you Cas?" Sam said glancing at Castiel.

"Sure" he replied.

With that Castiel tapped Madame Bess and they both vanished in seconds. About over twenty minutes later they were both back with Madame Bess now carrying a couple of suitcases and nobody was even fazed anymore.

"Sorry we took so long, but I convinced Castiel to take me about to the house so I could pack a few clothes for both me and Gwen since, I don't know how long we will be here" she told them.

"Thanks, grandmom" said Gwen as she grabbed her suitcase then set it down on the floor near her.

"Anyway, right now lets just get some dinner then talk about me, Ava and Castiel will go over our plans for tomorrow" Sam said.

They all had their dinner which was leftovers, but their minds were still on the current situation with Dean and the reapers and Zadkiel even though none of them brought it up while eating their meals. After dinner, they all were back in the main room, where Sam went over details on their mission for tomorrow morning which involved him phoning the reapers who had Dean's phone to inform them about Zadkiel and enlisting their help to enter purgatory since reapers are the only beings that can do that by selecting one of them to accompany them to that place, plus the reaper could be a useful ally in fighting off the other creatures there. Charlie brought up food for them during their journey, but Sam told her that they wouldn't need food since humans don't get hungry while trapped in purgatory as was the case with Dean who was trapped there for a year.

Castiel also remembered where Zadkiel resided as he was quite the recluse so he could lead them there easily. After they finished going over their plans, they just all just hung out wanting to take their minds off the mission and Dean even though they were still worried. Sam was tempted to call Dean despite knowing that reaper would only answer the phone and probably won't let him speak to his brother and it was kind of making Sam crazy. The others tried their best to cheer him up with Adam suggesting a game of chess to take his mind off it but Sam just wasn't in the mood, some of them just watch television despite the fact there wasn't anything on interesting to see but the news. Madame Bess decided to busy her time washing the dishes in the sink and cleaning up and Gwen spent her time catching up with Ava since the two are friends and hadn't seen each other in a while and Charlie even joined in their conversations.

Sam gave her space to have her girl time with Ava and just talked to Adam and Castiel. When it was nearly 11:00p.m., the gang all decided to retire to bed early since they would get up very early the next morning. Adam carried Madame Bess's luggage to the room she will be and staying and Sam carried Gwen's to his room which she will be sharing with him. Everybody retired to bed while Castiel just stayed up all night in the main room just to keep watch as he decided to stay the night too. Most of them couldn't sleep that night except Madame Bess. It took Ava an hour to get some sleep as she was so worried about Dean and her determination to save him no matter what, she wasn't going to lose him now. Sam and Ava were in bed together and made love to distract themselves of what happened and afterwards just cuddled together.

"I really hope this trip really works" she told him as she lay cuddled in his arms.

"Me too Gwen, that's all that I thought about today, I still can't stop thinking about Dean, what they're doing to him right now although knowing my brother, he probably acting like he's not fazed and driving them crazy. I bet after all of this, they will be relieved that we got him out of their hairs" Sam said as the thought was making him feel a bit better.

"You know Sam, as much as I hope you'll be able to save Dean and want him to be okay, I got to say that I'm scared for you too going to that place that you said is some kind of heaven or hell for monsters who die, I mean something could happen to you too" she told him.

Sam just starting to stroke and caress her hair with his hand and sighed.

"Don't worry about me Gwen, I'll have Ava and Castiel with me and we will have each other's backs I promise" he told her.

"I know, but I still worry, sometimes it feels like dating a cop, always worrying the danger, that one day you won't come back alive on the job and I always pray that you do" she told him.

Sam looked quite touching realizing what Gwen is going through and how his hunting life affects her.

"I'm sorry Gwen, I never want to put you through that, but you knew what my life is like" Sam said.

"I know, and I'm willing to stick by you anyway no matter what but I can't deny that I still worry and scared for you all that includes Ava too, she's the closest thing I have right now to female friend I can talk to" she told him.

"And we will all pull through with Cas's help we will come out on top like always, I mean you've been around us enough to know we always manage to do that and get accomplish whatever we set out to do" Sam reassured her.

"Yes, I know Sam, you Winchesters are so invincible you never lose but I still scares me to think that maybe one of these days you might not come out on top, the day when it's finally the end of the line" Gwen said.

"Well, we just all have to pray that never happens and have faith remember that's what you always going on to me about having faith" Sam told her.

"Yeah, I know, I will keep my fingers across the whole time and just tell myself you are coming back with this angel and you will free Dean and everything will be alright it will be just another story we can tell far in the future someday" Gwen said.

"Now, that's a deal I can make" Sam told her.

After talking for a while longer the two eventually dozed off in each other's arms. The next morning, they all got up washed up, Madame Bess, Ava and Gwen all helped out in the kitchen cooking a nice breakfast, eggs, bacon and sausages with orange juice and everybody enjoyed the nice home-cooked meal. Then after breakfast Sam got his Iphone and called Dean's number which the bearded reaper answered.

"I just want to let you know that we found a potential replacement for Dean, an angel named Zadkiel" Sam told him.

"Zadkiel that name rings a bell" he replied.

"Well, he's a Grigori, from what Cas told us" Sam said.

"A Grigori, didn't know if there is any of them left" said the reaper.

"Yes, Cas saw him in purgatory" Sam said.

"Purgatory!" cried out the reaper.

"Yes, that's where Cas said he last spotted him and that's the reason I called you" Sam told him.

"What do you want from me?" he asked.

"You see we one of you to escort us to purgatory since that's the only quickest way we can enter the place, besides, we could use extra hands when locating Zadkiel and dealing with all those creatures trapped there" Sam told him.

"Send one of my own, to help you find this Grigori, how do I know this isn't just some kind of trap?" he told Sam.

"I assure you this isn't any trap, I wouldn't risk Dean's safety like that, we promise you this is the real deal we just need help getting in and finding this angel and you're our only asset" Sam said.

There was a pause for a moment then the reaper spoke up again.

"Look, I tell you what, I will send one of my crew to take you all into purgatory but he won't go with you throughout the mission.

"You'll have to find this Zadkiel on your own" he told Sam.

"But, how are we going to be able to get out once we find him, it's not like I will able to call you to let us know that we found him and you can pick us up" Sam fired back.

"Well, you have two choices then, either you wait three days before midnight my guy to come back and get you out or we all know about a portal in purgatory designed for you mortals and will open once you get close…." but Sam cut him off.

"Yeah, I know about the portal I've been to the place before, but that only works for humans, it might not work for Cas or Zadkiel, then we would have done it all for nothing" he told him sternly.

"Hey, if that happens just phone me up and I will send my guy to fetch your angel pals, just tell them to go back to the spot you were in when you entered the place and he will find them and bring them out himself okay?" the reaper said kind of impatiently.

"Okay" replied Sam.

"I'll tell you what location to go, or where your angel pal can transport you all to meet my guy and will escort you all to that place" he told Sam.

"Fine" Sam said.

After he was finished listening to the reapers instructions he hung up. The others who were standing around him heard everything as Sam had his phone on speaker.

"So, there is a portal in this purgatory made for humans to escape?" asked Charlie who hadn't heard anything about it.

Sam nodded. "Yeah, there is" he told her.

"Will that be a problem for Cas and this Zadkiel since there not exactly humans?" Adam asked not wanting to offend.

"I don't know but if it is, you heard what that reaper said, we get in touch with him and he will send one of his crew to bring you both out just wait at the same spot we will be when he brings us to the place" Sam said.

"That I'll do" said Castiel.

"The only thing is that the portal will take us right into the middle the woods in Maine, that's thing" Sam explained.

The others just looked shocked upon hearing this except Castiel.

"What, in middle freaking woods all the way in Maine, are you freaking kidding us!" cried out Ava.

"Yeah, you didn't mention that when you and Dean told us about it" Adam said.

"Same goes with me Sam" Gwen added.

"Hey, there is no need to fret, once we're all out, Cas can get us out" he told them then he turned to Castiel.

"Cas, are you sure you will have all your powers once we're out?" he asked him again.

"A few days won't affect me Sam, I assure you" Castiel reminded him. Then he looked at Sam real serious. "You know Sam, like I said before, if this doesn't work, I will offer myself as a replacement to become the new Death if that's what it takes to get Dean out" he told him.

"That's not going to happen Cas, because we're going to get this Zadkiel to take Dean's if it's the last thing we do" Sam said real sternly.

"Yeah, we have to drag this Zadkiel with a sword to his throat than that's what we're do, if it means saving Dean" Ava added.

"I just hope it works out the way you say Sam, but I meant what I said" Castiel told them.

"I know and that and it means a lot Cas, but we won't let that happen no matter what" Sam told them.

"Okay, everybody enough talk, I guess we better get ready for this" Ava replied.

With that, Sam, Ava and Castiel prepared for the trip. Ava had pinned her hair up and was not wearing any jewelry or makeup. Sam got the purgatory sword he had the last time he was in that place and he found and angel sword for Castiel and another sword for Ava, as well as guns that included the ones carrying silver bullets which they had in duffel bags. Then they were in the main room saying their goodbyes to the others as they prepared to leave for their mission.

"Good luck come back safe" Gwen said to Sam as the gave each other a passionate kiss not caring if the others say them.

"I will" Sam told her after they stopped kissing.

Then Gwen hugged Ava while Madame Bess gave Sam a hug. Sam even gave a hug to Adam and Charlie, as Madame Bess gave Ava a hug than one to Castiel who didn't get a hug from any of the others but Charlie and Adam gave him nudges on the shoulder as they said their goodbyes to him and wishing him luck.

"Please watch over them and keep them safe" Gwen pleaded with Castiel.

"That I promise" he told her.

After everybody said their goodbyes, Sam nodded as he and Ava took hold of each of Castiel's shoulders and within seconds, the three disappeared into thin air.
