Chapter 22 Journey Back to Purgatory

Sam, Ava and Castiel were now standing outside in a long alleyway with a dumpster nearby and the alley empty except for them but then again it was still morning, and not that many people would be outside in the area just yet.

"What, so this is the place where we're suppose get into purgatory, I would expect something less common than this?" Ava said.

"Hey, I've been through this before and don't be fooled by the surroundings" Sam told her while she just shrugged her shoulders.

Seconds later, one of the reapers in the form of a man with glasses and long blonde hair in a ponytail and dressed like a hipster covered with unbuttoned winter jacket appeared to them.

"So, you're the one selected to taxi us into purgatory?" Sam replied.

The reaper didn't have any expression on his face just glared at them emotionless. "That's right hunter, now lets just get this show on the road already, I don't want to be out her any longer than I have to" he told them.

"Okay, fine, we can't wait either" Sam told them.

"Okay everybody hold hands and you take my hand" the reaper said glancing at Sam.

They obeyed quickly as Ava took Sam's hand while Castiel took Ava's and Sam took the reapers hand.

"What's with the handholding here?" Ava whispered to Sam.

"Trust me, it's necessary how we're getting here. Then while all of them were facing the wall on the left side of the alleyway, within seconds the wall seemed to just melt away and all of them felt themselves being pulled closer and closer to it without moving their feet.

"What's happening!" cried out Ava.

"It's gonna be alright Ava, we're almost there!" Sam cried out.

They continued to feel their bodies move closer and closer and in way it felt like riding a rollercoaster. Then soon enough, there was bright light glimmering in the wall that shined so much it nearly blinded them as they had to close their eyes. Then before any of them knew it, their bodies went right into the wall where the bright light was shining and it was all over. The next thing they knew, they were standing outside in the middle of the woods. It appeared to be an ordinary woods with trees grass and instead the sky being blue it appeared to be gray and the air felt kind of cold. Everybody just looked around their surroundings, although neither Sam nor Castiel appeared to be fazed, Ava just looked about in amazement not believing what she was seeing even though she knew what to expect.

"Wow, we're literally not in Kansas anymore" she replied in a sarcastic tone that reminded them of Dean's.

"Boy, this place looks the same the last time I was here" Sam replied. "Yeah, I know, nothing's change not that I would expect to it to" replied Castiel.

"Okay, now that I brought you all here, you'll on your own. Just remember, you got three nights until midnight to bring this Zadkiel to us to take your brother's place or else" the reaper reminded them.

"Yeah, we know already and we will succeed" Sam told them.

"For your brother's sake you better hope so" he told them then turned around and vanished through waves of bright light just like that.

Ava continued to look around the place in curiosity processing that she was actually in purgatory.

"This place looks just like any ordinary woods even reminds me almost of the time me and Dean spent in Hades" she said.

"Look, like I said before, this journey is going to be quite dangerous with the leviathans still wanting a price on my head, so please I want you two to follow my instructions no matter what" Castiel told them.

"Just take us to Zadkiel do you remember the way?" Sam asked him. Castiel nodded.

"In fact, I do" he told them.

"So can you just teleport us there, it would save the long walk in these woods" Ava replied.

Castiel nodded again as he lifted up his hands and gestured them over. "Come on and grab a hold of me" he instructed and the followed obediently.

Then the three of them teleported to another part of the woods and up ahead was a cave.

"So, does this Zadkiel live here or what?" Sam asked.

"Yes, this is his home the last time I was here, he was very secluse" said Castiel.

"He got to be, living in a cave in all, wonder what he will think of us dropping by?" Ava replied trying to be sarcastic but what actually quite nervous not knowing what to expect.

"Just stay behind me and stay close" Castiel reminded them.

"You don't have to tell me twice" said Ava.

Then the trio headed for the cave with Castiel taking the lead and Sam right behind him and Ava behind Sam. They all had taken out their swords and angel blade for protection. As they entered the cave, they noticed that it had a bad scent smelled like an animal's dean and it was quite dark and even colder than outside. They continue strolling through the cave in silence looking about each having an uneasy feeling.

"I don't think this Zadkiel is here anymore, I mean it's been a while since you've last been here, anything could have happened" Sam said.

"Yeah, maybe whatever creatures on this place finally got to him" Ava added feeling concerned.

"I don't know, Zadkiel managed to survive in this place for very long time even without his grace, he is excellent with a purgatory sword, and a skilled fighter, even though he no longer had any grace he could still take out many monsters that tried to attack him single handedly, I can't imagine him letting those monsters get to him after all this time" Castiel told them although he himself didn't sound so sure.

"Well, anything could happen, maybe he was taken off guard or maybe he is alive and just moved to another place after getting ambushed" Sam said.

"Yeah, I'm not sure anybody is in here and I'm getting a bad feeling right now" Ava said as she kept looking around only seeing rocks and cobwebs about.

"If we can't find him here, we will just search someplace else, but I got a gut feeling he's still alive, he is real survivor those bloody creatures didn't beat him just yet" Castiel replied in firm tone trying to convince himself as much as Sam and Ava.

"I really hope so, Cas since he's our only hope" Sam told them.

Just then they heard a sound that kind of made them jump a bit except Castiel who wondered if it was Zadkiel.

"Did you hear that?" asked Ava nervously as she kept looking around her surroundings.

"Yeah, I heard it too, could it be your old buddy Zadkiel?" Sam wondered.

Castiel started to look a bit nervous, as he knew if Zadkiel was around, he would just show himself already not spook them. He turned to the others keeping a tight grip on his purgatory sword. "Be close and stand on guard, you don't know what to expect in this place" he told them as they all held tighter to their weapons preparing to attack if necessary.

More noises were heard that prompted them to lift up their swords higher preparing for the worst looking about but nobody seemed to be there.

"Zadkiel, Zadkiel, is that you, it's me Castiel!" Castiel yelled out.

"Hey, Cas, if it's not Zadkiel are you sure you want to give away that we're here?" Sam reminded him.

Castiel turned back to Sam. "If it's not Zadkiel then we are likely walking targets anyway, just be prepared to attack when the time comes" he told him then turned back facing ahead.

Suddenly there was stillness again with no sound at all. The trio just continued to stand there looking about with their weapons up for anything to come but nothing ever came. After what happened to be almost a minute, Ava just lowered her angel blade.

"You know it think this place is empty, looks like your old pal doesn't live here anymore, I'm all for retreating" she said.

However, Ava spoke too soon because within seconds more sounds can be heard and just then they were surrounding by several of creatures who sprang out onto them by surprise. A group of blood-sucking vampires, there had to have been a least six or seven both males and females, and then charged right at them. Though all three of them were scared they lifted up their weapons and bravely prepared for battle. As soon as the vampires descended on them all three of them began fighting them off with their fighting skills, punching, kicking, shoving while managing use their swords or angel blade with full swings chopped off some heads, they kept doing this until they was no one left and soon the cave was filled with headless corpses of vampires with their heads laying some feet away.

"I think we got them all" Sam replied out of breath.

Ava nodded as she along with Sam and Castiel looked around for more surprise attacks.

"Looks that way" Castiel replied.

"Hey, if they're here what do you think happened to your old friend, do you think those vamps got him?" Sam asked turning to Castiel.

"I don't think so, Zakiel managed to survive this place for centuries, there is no way he could be taken so easily by those creatures, he even surprised me when taking down some the creatures in this place who attacked us. He's just too smart for that" Castiel replied.

"You know Castiel, even the greatest hero can fall, it does happen, not trying to be a downer but realistic" Ava added. "I understand but we don't see his body here nor any remains if those vamps had fed on him, so I sure he was too clever for them and escaped, he always knew how to outsmart those creatures in this god forsaken place" Castiel replied more sternly even though a part of him feared that Sam and Ava may be right.

"I sure hope so Castiel, but, lets just search around this cave more to be the safe side" Sam suggested.

"Alright" Castiel said and soon they continued their search around the cave always looking about to make sure there were no more surprise attacks by vampires or any other creatures for that matter.

Castiel even called out to Zadkiel to no avail not worrying about if any creatures in the cave could hear them since he was convinced there were no more creatures in the cave now. After taking a thorough search and not finding any trace of Zakiel or his remains, they all decided he wasn't there decided to leave the cave.

"You know I just have to wonder, if all the souls of creatures that were killed are in this place, then what happens to them when we kill them in this place exactly?" she asked as they were walking past the vampire corpses.

"No one really knows, that is one of the mysteries of the world. Perhaps, they reanimate some time later although during my time in purgatory, I didn't see that happen, or maybe their souls do nowhere, there just gone and that's it or maybe there is an unknown place that we don't know about. I wondered the same thing when angels or demons die, do their souls go somewhere else" Castiel replied.

"I don't care where they do as long as we don't have to deal with them anymore" Sam said.

The trio were soon out of the cave and continued their search in the woods.

"I'm sure Zadkiel is here somewhere, perhaps he found another home for himself once those vampires descended on his former place of shelter" Castiel told them.

"I really hope so Cas, he's our only hope right now" Sam said.

They continued on their stroll through the woods, looking around their surroundings now and then holding their weapons preparing for any attack that may happen getting more anxious to find Zadkiel. They were silent the whole time not wanting to give themselves away to any other creatures in woods who would jump and attack upon hearing their sounds. Their search led them to find other caves which they searched but were empty. They seemed to walk around the woods forever when they found a stream and Sam and Ava both wanted to stop and rest their feet a little while and Castiel agreed to give them ten minutes.

"Boy, I tell you this just feels just like a hike the woods, it definitely makes me think back when me and Dean were trapped in the Underworld and all we did was just walk around in the woods that felt like eternity looking for Hades or whoever could help us. We had to avoid and flee from those creatures in there, both wondering if we will ever get out. The only good thing about though it brought both of us even closer than before. Hell, I knew then that I had feelings for Dean. It was those kind feelings that I hadn't had for a man in a long time" Ava said as she gave out a sigh thinking about it all again.

"I know what you mean, me and Dean have been through a lot over the decade we hunted together, I mean we went literally through hell and back. I know we are not going to lose him now" Sam said trying to convince himself more than Ava.

"No, we won't lose our Dean, that's for sure. You know this is gotta to be the first time we actually just really talked. The two of us without Dean around" Ava said with a smirk.

"Yeah, I know, it takes us being in this monster heaven to have a conversation alone, just the two us well with Cas here of course, to talk about Dean and what he means to us. I know you really love him, Ava and he loves you too even if he can't actually say the word; he told me so" Sam said glancing at her.

"Wow, he told you that about me?" Ava replied.

Sam just nodded. "Yes, Ava he did, he really does. It wasn't easy for him to say since it's been a long time since he really felt that away about a woman. In fact, he says he can relate to you much more than he could to any woman in his past including the rare ones he really had strong feelings for and that's just doesn't happen to Dean. Besides, me Cas and others he considered family, he's mainly kept people at bay especially women" he told her.

"Yes, I know and I'm glad be the one that was able to get close to him and really bond, we both are, we are both very important part of each other's lives now" Ava said.

"I know, I really can see that as me and Gwen are important part of each other's lives too" Sam said.

"Okay, now that we all know how much important Dean is to everybody concerned, can we focus on finding Zadkiel now and trying to survive this place, even without the creatures, they are still leviathans around who may want a head on my platter as well as yours Sam and if they have learned that we're hear they it will be no time they will be hunting for us" Castiel replied sternly.

"I understand Cas, of course, we just need unwind a bit, but yeah we need to get back on track trying to find this Zadkiel guy our main priority" Sam said.

"Yeah, chill Castiel just a bit, we just wanted to express our feelings and get it off our chest already" Ava added.

Castiel calmed downed a bit and had a softer tone now. "Look I'm sorry guys if I seem so testy, but I have to admit I'm really worried this more than I wanted to let on, finding Zadkiel hoping to get his help if we survive this place and getting jumped by those vampires just reminds me how dangerous purgatory really is, always having to look over your shoulder being on guard a lot of the times in order to survive" he told them.

"Hey, we get it Cas, it's scary for us too more than either of us wants to admit" Sam told him.

After their break, they continued on their trail in the woods being very cautious for more surprise attacks, and just hoping to stay alive trying to track down this angel Zadkiel not really knowing where he is. Just then, they walked into area where there was nothing but tree stumps and broken branches laying on the ground. Then ground seemed to be carved with very large circle with what appeared to be symbols that puzzled the trio.

"What the heck is this?" cried out Ava.

"Beats me" Castiel replied as they walked a bit closer and soon they were walking on the circle as they noticed the symbols carved inside.

"It appears to be some kind of symbols" Sam replied observing the symbols then a familiarity came over him as he recognized these symbols.

Before he had a chance to saying anything Castiel suddenly wasn't able to move his body, like he was frozen.

"It's an angel trap!" he cried out.

"An angel trap?" Ava replied.

"But who would make the trouble of making such a trap?" Sam cried out.

"We would!" they heard a voice and turned to see a group of dirty looking men, unshaven, with greasy hair or bald, dressed in like their were a bunch of hobos back in their world.

They must have been about seven or eight of them and they are had sinister looks on their faces.

"Leviathans!" Castiel cried out as Sam and Ava just had surprised looks on their faces.

"These are the leviathans?" Ava said who had her sword held up ready to strike.

"Yeah" Sam replied nodding his head a bit.

"Funny, they are not what I expected. I thought they would like more like giant lizards with or something like that" she replied.

"Trust me, you will be surprised" Sam told her.

"Well, well, well, we have been expecting you Castiel" said one of the leviathans walking up to him.

"How did you find out I was here?" asked Castiel.

"We found out about it not too long after you arrived, as we have spies everywhere in the woods. We figured you be heading this way so we made this huge trap for you once you got here" said the leviathan.

Just then another leviathan walked up to him. "We've been waiting a long time for this, but it's was worth it" he replied.

"So, what is your plan, to kill me, fine then, just get it over with but let the others go" Castiel told them.

"Castiel no!" cried out Sam.

"How noble of you, but no need to worry we don't have any intentions of killing you, but we do want is revenge for what you did to us, stealing our souls and then sending us back here, so you will be coming with us as well as your comrades here" said the leviathan looking over at Sam and Ava.

"Hey, leave them out it, your beef is with me" replied Castiel hastily.

The other leviathan who had glanced at Sam and looked at him with familiarity. "But they are in it, I know that's Sam Winchester, he and his brother Dean Winchester are the ones responsible for us being sent back here and Dean killed our mother Eve, ruining all her plans and sending her back here too. We all want revenge for that especially mother so he's coming with us. We don't care about the girl though, we'll just kill her but you two are ours" he replied as the other leviathans started advancing on Sam and Ava who just stood there close together looking scared as they held tight grasps on their swords.

"Grab them" said the first leviathan who seemed to be their leader.

"Sam, Ava get out of here" Castiel cried out feeling powerless to help them since he's trapped and can't move.

As the leviathans lunged at them, Sam and Ava quickly take a fighting stance and are prepared for battle and as the leviathans get close enough, both of them start throwing punches and karate kicks and when one of the creatures gets near Ava, it's face suddenly opens into a mouth with animal teeth with a forked lizard tongue hanging out which disgusted Ava at such a grotesque sight but she just used her angel sword and swung decapitating it and his headless corpse fell to the ground as black goo started oozing out of what remained of his neck while his head rolled away. Both Sam and Ava continued fighting off the leviathans and even beheading them with their swords but out of nowhere more leviathans arrived and started lunging at them and now it felt like there was almost twenty.

"There too many of them" Sam replied to Ava as they struggled to fight them off with Ava even managed to duck when one of the female leviathans swung a branch at her and she tried to swing her sword at her but missed so she gave her good left hook and a karate kick in the chest flooring her.

"We won't be able to hold them off forever, and they outnumber us too much" Ava cried out as he kept fighting off other leviathans.

"Sam, Ava, please just go get out of here!" Castiel cried out frustrated he couldn't help them.

"We're not leaving you behind Cas!" cried Sam still fighting more leviathans.

"Please, you'll never be able to fight all of them, there just too many now, you'll get captured too, just get out here if not for your sake for Ava's, they'll just kill her since she's no use to them!" he yelled out to Sam.

Just then, a leviathan who Ava was fighting with managed with a large branch to knock her down the ground. Sam turned around just as she gasp in pain and saw her on the ground as the leviathan standing over's face opened into a mouth and was prepared to advance on her. He quickly lunged and swinging his sword chopped the creature's head off within seconds and the headless corpse collapsed to the ground. Sam then looked down at Ava who was still in a bit of shock and now recovering her composure. "Are you okay Ava?" he asked her. Ava just rubbed her shoulder blade that was looking sore from the attack but seemed okay.

"Yeah, I'm good" she told him as Sam quickly helped her up when she reached out her hand.

However, they had to face the reality that there was now just too many leviathans to fight off as plenty more had arrived and advanced on them. They continued to fight off more of the creatures who lunged at them but it became quite exhausting to fight all of them and there was no way for them to reach Castiel and help him.

"Sam, Ava, please just get out of here and save yourselves, there nothing else you can do. Don't worry, I'll be alright for now!" he cried out them.

"You know Sam he's right, we got to face the facts, we're too outnumbered to help him now and fight all these creatures off" Ava said as they kept fighting off leviathans who were getting to quick for them to behead.

"We can't abandon him now, he would never abandon us in trouble" Sam replied back.

"I know, but we're no help if we end up getting killed too. We can come up with a plan to rescue him later but right now please listen to him!" Ava cried out as she fought off a female leviathan and was able to behead her while Sam beheaded the creature he was fighting with.

"Please, just go, get far away, you can't beat them all so hurry before they get you too" Castiel.

As he said this more leviathans came at Sam and Ava forcing them to fight them off and they both were nearly overpowered by the creatures but where able to neutralize them.

Ava just yanked on Sam's arm. "Come on Sam, we have to go, we just can't take them all, hurry before they get us too!" she yelled.

Sam feeling he had no choice despite his reluctance just consented to Ava's pleas and they both just took off. Sam glanced at Castiel one more time who was still standing in the middle of the angel trap who turned to Sam and Ava once more.

"It's okay, go, please go!" he cried to them.

So, they took off as some of the leviathans began chasing them into the woods. They ran non stop as fast as they could into the woods and finally outrunning the leviathans who were still pursuing them. They continued on running like they never ran before until they made their way out of the woods and near a lake. They knew the leviathans were still pursuing them and had to think fast.

"Quick, get into the lake!" Sam cried to Ava.

"What?" Ava replied.

"Trust me, this may be the only way to lose those leviathans, into the lake" he told her.

He grabbed a hold of her wrist and tugged her towards the lake and soon they both stepped into the cold water. Ava gasp at the cold feel of the water.

"Hey, forget about that right now, our lives are more important than a little cold" Sam told her.

Ava nodded. "Yeah, but still it's feels like stepping into ice" she told him.

They soon continued to step further into the lake and when burying their bodies further and further down until they were neck in the lake. When the heard the leviathans coming, they just buried heads in the water and held their breaths. The leviathans then appeared and looked around as they walked about the lake curious to where Sam and Ava went.

"Don't know how we're going to find them now" one of them said.

"Hey, they could still be hiding somewhere in the woods, quick lets split up and keep looking" said another.

Then they all soon ran back into the woods and disappeared out of sight. Once they were all gone, Sam and Ava quickly bobbed their heads back up from the water now coughing and gasping for breath. After they got out of the water they both were freezing from the cold water as they wrapped their arms around their bodies to stay warm.

"Gee, the last time I did something like that was when me and Dean were hiding from one of those creatures in the Underworld, that was some adventure for sure" Ava said.

"Yeah, well you can feel free to tell me all about it later, but right now we got to plan our next move" Sam said still wrapping his arms from the cold water with is entire body feeling wet.

"The only move I would like to make is how to get out of these wet clothes and my hair, god I wish I had blow dryer right now" Ava told him.

"Me too, but for now, we got to find this Zadkiel dude more than ever, as he could help us rescue Castiel" Sam said.

"I don't know if one angel can go up against those freaks. I'm telling you, I hadn't seen anything like that, I mean their mouths in their faces and those teeth" said Ava.

"I know, that's why before finding Zadkiel, we're going to find an old friend of mine and Dean's" Sam said. "And old friend, who could that possibly be?" Ava asked.

"Our old pal Benny" Sam told her as her eyes lit up.
