Chapters 24 A Reunion With An Old Friend
Sam and Ava were still recovering from their latest attack by a group of vampires they had to fend off only for Ava to nearly get killed by their leader who was then ganked by none other than Benny, Dean's old vampire buddy who was who they were looking for anyway. Sam helped Ava up and checked to see if she was okay, which she was although her face was still a little sore from being struck. Sam turned to Benny so relieved to finally see a familiar face in this place.
"Benny, thank god we ran into you" Sam said.
"Damn right, thank your lucky stars I ran into you Sammy boy, since you and your little girlfriend here were about to be mush meat to my fellow vamps. Hope the young lady is alright" Benny said glancing at Sam than at Ava.
"Hey, I'm fine and thanks for save there" she told him.
"Yeah, Benny you really saved our necks" Sam added.
"Speaking of, what are your necks happen to be doing out in these parts again, last time I saw you I was helping you get out of this place, now you're back here with your girlfriend" Benny wondered.
"I'm not his girlfriend, just a friend…" Ava responded but before she had a chance to finish Benny interrupted, "Whatever, what are you all doing here?" he asked.
"Hey, Benny man, this is Ava she's actually Dean's girlfriend and a hunter too" Sam said glancing at Ava.
"Ava, this is Benny the one I was telling you about" he added glancing at Benny again.
"Yeah, please to meet you, I mean you're Dean's old vampire comrade when he was trapped in this place, he told me a lot about it. Still getting over him having a vampire pal" she told him.
"Yeah, please to meet you too, so Dean find himself a lady love and a pretty little hunter too, charmed" Benny said with his southern charm which made Ava blush a bit.
Benny than glanced at Sam again. "Still, what brings you here and is Dean here with you?" he asked.
Sam shook his head. "No, Dean is not here with us, and what we're doing here is a long story, but we really do need your help, in fact you are who were looking for just before getting jumped by the bloodsuckers" he said.
"Really, you came all this way for my help what's wrong and where is Dean if he's not with you?" Benny asked looking more curious to what was going on as he started to sense something was wrong and somehow Dean was involved.
"No, look Benny we'll explain everything just we need find a spot away from here with these vamp corpses" Sam said.
Benny glanced between both Sam and Ava and nodded. "Okay, come with me" he told them as he led the way.
They soon departed that place where the vampires' dead bodies lay went to another part of the woods as Benny looked around to make sure, no creature was around, as they stood in front of some big trees.
"Okay, now tell me what's going on Sam and does this has anything to do with Dean?" Benny asked him.
Sam nodded his head and soon explained to him everything that happened to Dean with the reapers and them wanting him to replace Death since they blamed him for killing him and causing chaos around the world regarding the fates of people's lives and the need a new Death to restore natural order. He told him about what led them to arrive to purgatory with Castiel accompanying them to find his old angel friend Zadkiel and how he got caught by some leviathans who are now planning to deliver them to Eve who wants revenge and will torture him. They didn't leave anything out and after they were finished Benny eyes lit up taking in all that he just heard.
"Benny, we need your help to rescue Castiel and find this Zadkiel angel, I guess I was hoping you round up some of your allies to help fight the leviathans and rescue Cas, we just don't know what else to do" Sam cried out pleading for Benny for help.
"Yeah, you do seem to be our only, hope and if you are really Dean's friend, you do this at least for him" Ava added.
Benny just sighed as both Sam and Ava looked at him so eagerly.
"You don't have to guilt me, I'll help you, after all me and Dean go way back, and from what you tell me, he really could use some help, to get him out of this sticky situation he got himself into, and I do owe him one since he saved my bacon plenty of times while trapped in this place. Of course, first thing's first and that is saving our dear old pal Castiel, I remember him being trapped in this place too, we all kind of looked out for one another and I know how much that angel means to Dean" he told them.
Sam just smiled so relieved by Benny's words and sighed himself. "Thanks man, that means a lot to us" he told him.
"Well, you might want to thank me some more because, it's a real good thing I bumped into you guys and not just to save you from those creeps but because I can help you with Zadkiel and more ways than you know" Benny said.
Sam looked really excited and happy along with Ava even though a bit confused about some of Benny's statement.
"That's great Benny but how, if there something you know?" Sam asked him curiously.
Benny nodded. "In fact, me and Zadkiel are kind of tight" he replied.
Sam just looked confused. "What do you mean?" he asked.
"I mean, I know Zadkiel quite well, he saved my bacon way back after you all left and became sort of an ally to me along with some other creatures in this place. He managed to organize a group among us creatures bringing us all together as allies for a common goal and that is to survive this place not as enemies fighting against each other but with each other having each other's backs, a united front, like an army of comrades in a way" Benny finished.
Sam just looked shocked at what he heard. "You mean you are part of some team of monsters, no-offense with Zadkiel, kind of a like the Avengers?" Sam asked his eyes still lit up.
"Don't know what the Avengers are but yeah, we are sort of a team and Zadkiel is our leader, we trust him with our lives since he's come through for all of us and doesn't demand anything in return but to have his back when needed and he has ours" Benny replied.
"Woah, this is actually great news, you and Dean's old vampire buddy just happens to be allies with Zadkiel along with other creatures in this place and we're looking for Zadkiel because we need his help in saving Castiel and Dean" Ava said.
"You know I mean it when I said I do anything to help Dean and even Castiel after everything we've been through together, and I'm sure Zadkiel would be willing to help save Castiel but I have to admit I'm not sure about him leaving with you all to take over this Death's place. I mean, from what I know of him, he's quite content remaining in this place and not going back to Earth, which is why he's been here for so long, not because he's trapped here but because he wants to be" Benny told them in serious tone.
"He's got to help us, he's our only hope to save Dean, we don't know any other way and you urge you to help us convince him to come back with us since you two are tight now" Sam pleaded.
Benny just kind of sighed and have a conflicted look on his face. "Man, Sam, I mean, this is kind of hard for me too. Zadkiel is a true friend, and our group wouldn't want to lose him either, we became quite like a family in a way, but I do want to help Dean" Benny told them.
"Hey, please, I mean, if you are really Dean's friend like you say you are, you will be willing to help us even if that means giving up your leader Zadkiel, I'm sure you all will still manage to survive as a united front not matter what, you've managed this far, but we need him more for Dean's sake please will you try to get through to your friend" Ava urged in a very pleading tone.
Benny looked touched as he glared at Ava seeing all the longing in her eyes showing desperation and love who was willing to do anything for that love. "I can see Dean really means a lot to you there sweet thing, I've seen that look before and hasn't been a look I've seen in a long time. You care a lot for Dean, even love him I suspect?" he replied to her.
Ava nodded. "Yes, I do, we do" she said glancing at Sam for a moment. "Which is why we came all this way, to this place, for your friend's help, we need him" she said again.
Benny said again touched by such devotion despite his own conflicted feelings and uncertainty.
"Well, I still can't make any promises, and you said it yourself that if Zadkiel turns you down, Castiel will step up instead, so either way Dean will be saved" he tells them.
"Yeah, we know that but, we don't want to lose Cas either he's family to us just as Dean was once like family to you, we couldn't let him make this sacrifice, Dean wouldn't want it and would always feel guilty about it, that's why we need your friend. I know he's your leader and all but you could still survive as a team even if he's not your leader, I mean Benny you are quite resourceful yourself and have survived all this time, Dean told me how the two of you to survived together" Sam told him giving him his typical puppy dog eyes.
Benny after pausing a bit and looking a bit conflicted finally just nodded his head. "Alright, alright, you don't have to sway me anymore, I'll try to help you with Zadkiel, of course the others won't like it, but this is for Dean, sake and for Castiel" he told them.
"Thanks Benny, this really means a lot" Sam said with a happy look on his face feeling a bit excited and relieved that they were making some progress.
"Yeah, that goes for me too, by the way where is this Zadkiel now?" Ava chimed in also looking grateful and relieved.
"Well, we have a little home for us, a sort of haven for all of creatures who are tired of being on their own fighting to survive in this place and want be with other like-minded creatures of different species who all have the same goal is to survive as a group. After being chased out by those vamps, we found a better and large place in this big cave, I'll take you there right now" Benny told them.
"Thanks again Benny and lead the way" Sam told him still feeling so glad to have found Benny of all people and to finally have help.
"Sure thing, follow me" Benny said and soon they were all off.
The three of them continued on wandering into the woods further and further with Benny up in front leading the way and Ava and Sam trailing right behind him. It seemed endless as they wandered further into the woods as fog creeped in sometimes making it a big hard to see and both Sam and Ava's legs were getting tired. Just when it seemed like forever, they were finally at their destination.
"Here it is, home sweet home" Benny said as the led them to cave that have a big hole between some large rocks.
"Well finally, my legs are starting to ache, could rest them a bit" Ava said trying to sound sarcastic.
"Follow me" Benny told them as he continued to lead then on inside the cave.
Once inside, both Sam and Ava discovered how large the cave was as it even had a lake inside which they looked at in amazement as they walked along the banks. They continued on until the found an area where a large group of creatures some hanging around some sitting around. There pretty much a very diverse group, creatures of different kinds, vampires, werewolves, ghouls, and many more. There were young, old, some are even children, and there of different races, and ethnic backgrounds and all of them are interacting peacefully among each other, like some utopia. Benny continues to lead Sam and Ava around and the creatures stop what they are doing and just started to glance their way and stare at them real seriously and suspicious, some of the children look scared.
"Wow, there is really a monster haven" Ava couldn't help remark.
"Yeah, a hippie-monster haven of sorts" Sam added.
Some of the creatures who were sitting down got up at the sight of Sam and Ava and one of the creatures and unshaven man with longish hair who looked like a typical hobo was the first to approached Benny.
"Hey, Benny, who the hell are these two, where do they come from?" he asked him.
"Cool your nerves, there Oscar, these are old friends of mine, and there are not here to cause harm" Benny replied.
"What old friend of yours, never seen them before in these parts" he replied then he drew closer to Sam and Ava.
"Hey, wait a minute, these are humans, I can smell, what the hell are humans doing in our world!" he cried out loud enough for the others to here and soon they began to murmur, "Humans, we got humans in our cave".
"Calm down, Oscar, like I said before, these are friends of mine, me and the dude here go way back, and they don't mean any of you any harm" Benny tried to reassure him.
"Humans, always mean us harm" said Oscar angrily.
"Yeah, humans in our world, they don't belong!" cried out another creature.
"How can humans be here!" another cried out and everybody soon started murmuring and panicking at the sight of Sam and Ava.
"I guess, this isn't the welcoming committee" Ava replied to Sam in a sarcastic tone.
"It was because of humans, that we are all in this forsaken hell!" cried out Oscar.
"Oscar is right Benny, why would you bring these outsiders to our home, and how the hell did they get here in the first place" replied another creature, a long bearded man with thick ginger-colored hair.
"If you take an easy, I can explain, I just need to find Zadkiel" Benny replied.
"No need to wait for Zadkiel, I say toss those humans out, we don't want them here, they caused us nothing but harm back on earth and the only good thing about this place is that we are free of them" cried out Oscar in angry and stern tone and soon some of the others agreed nodding their heads while others just remained silent.
"Humans are trouble we don't want their kind here" replied blonde hair woman who too looked like a homeless person as her hair was dirty and unkept and dress looked dirty.
"Hey, many of you all used to be humans once including me" Benny replied.
"So, what, that was in another life, we aren't humans anymore, they killed off our kinds and now there are our enemies" replied Oscar angrily as the others agreed again and soon other voices started yelling for Benny to toss Sam and Ava out.
"If you won't get rid of them maybe we will take care of them ourselves" Oscar said as he advanced towards them as Benny step in front of Sam and Ava to protect them who just willingly stood behind Benny as they were outnumbered.
"Great, just what we need, the mob mentality of monsters" replied Sam in a sarcastic tone this time. Benny briefly turned to him.
"Hey, if you two want to make it out of here alive just get behind me and shut it" he told him and Sam obeyed right away and Ava didn't say a word this time.
Then Benny turned back towards Oscar. "You'll have to get by me to get to them" he told him seriously staring him down.
Oscar just looked taken aback. "You'll really pick these humans over your own kind" he said.
"I don't want to pick sides here, like I said before, I know these two, and can guarantee that they're okay now tell me where is Zadkiel" Benny fired back as more in the crowd starting to approach them.
"Enough of this!" cried out another voice as everybody all turned in the direction where the voice was coming from.
Soon, they were all facing another man who hadn't been there before but appeared to have just arrived. The man was a dark-skinned African-American with a bald head and looked about in his thirties. He was very tall, in fact he was a couple of inches taller than Sam, who was quite tall himself. He was also well-built, who was dressed in a dark jacket and wearing some old-fashioned clothes. In his hand, he was holding a purgatory blade and he had a serious look on face. His presence alone seemed to command respect as everybody was suddenly silent at his arrival. He looked at Benny, Sam and Ava with curiosity while still having the same serious look. Benny stepped forward a bit to speak out.
"Zadkiel, thank goodness, I wanted to speak to you" he told him.
Zadkiel continued to glance at Sam and Ava and stare with curiosity and neither of them could tell if he thought was friendly or suspicious. "Benny, who are these two, and why have you brought them back here?" he asked not seeming too thrilled of strangers in their lair.
Benny briefly glanced at Sam and Ava then back at Zadkiel. "Just friends of mine, Sam here and I go way back, as I knew his brother when he was trapped here, I assure you they mean no harm, they come here seeking help" he told him.
"They're humans, they don't belong here" cried out Oscar as some of the others agreed and started crying out too.
"Silence!" Zadkiel cried out in a serious tone of a leader as they others all quieted down.
Then Zadkiel turned to face Benny, Sam and Ava again. "Humans, how did these humans arrive in this place?" Zadkiel asked him.
"It's a long story, Zadkiel, if you let me, I will explain everything" Benny said.
"Don't listen to him, Zadkiel, humans are nothing but trouble, I say we toss them out now!" yelled Oscar as who riled up some of the other creatures who were agreeing with him.
Zadkiel didn't seem to be impressed by his answer and gave him another serious look. "I will decide who goes or not, understand" he told Oscar firmly who quickly shut up and nodded his head.
"Benny has been my right hand this whole time and I trust his judgment so will hear him out" Zadkiel replied to the others and turned back to Benny.
"Come with me Benny and bring the humans" he instructed him and soon he led Benny away with Sam and Ava following behind as the creatures just looked on out of curiosity.
Zadkiel led them out to another area in the cave away from the creatures for total privacy, then he turned to face the trio with same serious look that didn't change. "Okay, Benny tell me what this is all about?" he asked.
Benny told Zadkiel everything Sam and Ava told him and Zadkiel listened to every word not changing his expression.
"The bottom is Castiel is an old friend of mine and he needs our help and so does Dean and Sam and Ava here came to you as their only hope" Benny replied.
Zadkiel paused a bit then finally spoke up.
"Castiel was also a friend a mine too, we were, at one point comrades when first arrived trapped in this place, it was us against the other creatures here. I will do whatever I can to rescue him and see to it that round up almost everybody who is abled to save him from those leviathans and from Eve, who there is no lost between the two of us" Zadkiel said.
"Thanks a lot there, that means a lot to us" Benny said happily.
"Not so fast, Benny, I will help Castiel but as for as this Dean goes with the new Death, I'm afraid I cannot" Zadkiel said.
This time Sam spoke up. "Please, we need you, you're our only hope here, we can't let my brother become the new Death and be taken away from us and vice versa" he pleaded.
"Yes, we don't have any other options here, you got to help us" Ava begged.
Zadkiel looked a bit touched by their remarks but just shook his head. "I'm sorry, I cannot, it's out of the question" he insisted.
"But why, why won't you help us?" asked Sam.
"Because, I don't have a place on earth anymore. I lived on that planet for centuries protecting the humans, we were suppose to be the noble beings fierce and righteous, that is until the others turned against them and started feeding on their souls for their own benefit. God didn't seem to help either instead sent angels to wipe us all out including me who didn't want no part of their evil deeds. Even the humans themselves were corrupted by all of the sin and evilness in the world. I just wanted out and I escaped from the earth and heaven altogether which is why I came here, a new world far away from all that and I don't have any intention of ever returning" Zadkiel said.
Sam walked up to Zadkiel and gave his typical puppy dog look. "Hey, look please, we really need your help, we came all this way and were willing to risk our lives and now our friend has been kidnapped. I understand if you're afraid about returning to earth and in a way don't blame you, but this is emergency, it's not just about my brother. The reapers said that fate is in chaos about who lives and dies without a Death, many people will continue to die before their time, there needs to be natural order and for that a new Death. I can't lose my brother to that, he's not meant for that, neither is Castiel who said we would take Dean's place to become the new Death if you didn't agree to help but we need him too. You on the other hand, this could be chance for you to help humankind again like you did before. I understand that humans are not perfect, and true there are really some bad and ugly in the world with humankind not just with monsters but there are also plenty of good too. Please, you will be doing a noble thing, for more than what you're doing here, I'm sure your followers could continue on without you, but we need you more" he urged with the same sad puppy dog look hoping to sway him.
Zadkiel was quite touched again by Sam's speech but once again he shook his head. "Young man, you are very brave, you and your companion to travel here just to convince me to help you save your brother from this fate, and as much as I sympathize, the fact is my place is here now, not back out there, I've giving up being responsible for humanity a long, long time ago. As for my old friend Castiel, a true friend, I will do whatever it takes to help save him, that I can do, but whatever decisions he make his own, it's not my job to bail him out of such a choice he's made for himself" he answered with a look of sympathy.
"Come on, Zadkiel, you confided in me yourself that, there is a part of you that longs to do something more meaningful than just survive against different creatures for eternity and giving chance to do something more worthwhile you may take it" Benny told him.
"Those were just words in passing, my mind is made up Benny, I'm so sorry your friends came all this way" Zadkiel said.
"So that's it, it's totally out of the question?" replied Ava who was getting frustrated by Zadkiel's answer. "Well, no I don't accept that, I beg of you to reconsider, think about it but please don't turn us a way. Dean means very much to us and we can't give up on him without of fight and you are only option we have, I beg of you" she went on in a pleading tone looking like she was almost about to cry.
Sam just grabbed Ava by the arms and lightly pulled her away.
"Ava, it's okay, we're not giving up" Sam told her.
Benny walked over to Zadkiel before he could speak up. "Hey, look I think we need to continue this in private, just you and me" he told him.
"My mind is made up Benny and there is nothing you can do to persuade me" Zadkiel replied in a stern tone.
"Yeah, but please I urge you just to hear me out alone, it won't kill you" Benny said in pleading tone.
Zadkiel just nodded his head. "Very well then, we will talk in more private spot" he said.
Sam just went up to Benny looking confused. "Benny, what do you have to discuss in private?" he asked him.
Benny just turned to Zakiel, "You on ahead I will be right there" he told him.
"As you wish" said Zadkiel who then walked away heading to another area in the cave until he was out of sight.
Then Benny turned to Sam. "Hey, I think if I have a one on one time with him, I can try to sway him, since I'm the closest to in this place. He seems to listen to me and has great respect of my words of wisdom, but it's best I do it alone without you two since he doesn't know you guys" he told Sam.
"Do you really think you can get through to him alone?" Sam asked.
"I can't make any promises, but I certainly do my best to win him over and convince him make him realize he would be doing good cause to humanity which I think deep down is what would make him feel the most useful again" Benny said.
"Okay, I'm counting on you Benny" Sam said.
"We're both counting on you" Ava added as she walked up near Sam. Benny just nodded again.
"Well, here is goes, I'm crossing my fingers" Benny told them as he turned around and walked out of the area where Zadkiel is and was soon out of sight.
Sam and Ava both just sighed and looked around not knowing what to do next but wait.
"Do you think he will be able to convince him?" Ava asked.
Sam just shrugged his shoulders. "I hope so, Ava I really do, because right now he's our only hope, for Dean's sake, Castiel's and all of ours. This is our last chance" he told her.
So, they just stood there and continued waiting both praying that they will get what they came there for the sake of all of them.
