Chapter 25 Another Old Friend

Sam and Ava just stood there in that same spot waiting feeling quite impatient wondering what Benny was saying to Zadkiel hoping that he could sway him to change his mind about coming back with them to take Dean's place as the new death. They were really counting on this since it was there only option but no matter what they had no intention of coming back empty-handed, nothing was going to stop them from saving Dean and they had no intention of letting Castiel fill the role.

"Ava was pacing now a bit as she grew more impatient. "Gee, it's taking long enough, they must have been there forever" she cried out.

"Hey, I just hope Benny gets through to him, it could take all day for all I care just as long that it works" Sam told her although he was growing more impatient too.

"I know, I know, it's just that I can't stand the suspense anymore. I really wish I was fly on a wall right now so I could hear everything they are saying" she told him.

Sam just nodded. "Yeah, I wish I knew what they were saying too but we just got to trust that Benny will convince to do this for us" he said.

"And what if he doesn't, Sam then what?" Ava asked who had stopped pacing and just had a worried look on her face.

"Then we take drastic measures like we talk about. I'm not letting Cas, make the sacrifice for us, he's family too" Sam told her with a determined look on his face.

Just then they could hear footsteps and when they looked up Benny and Zadkiel were coming back. Both Sam and Ava just stood still looking alert with serious looks on their faces feeling very hopeful and scared at the same time. The two entered the area headed towards Sam and Ava. Sam walked up a bit feeling kind of anxious.

"Well, did you convince him Benny, what do you all decide?" he asked eagerly.

Zadkiel just had a blank look on his face while Benny looked a bit conflicted. "You tell explain it to it Benny, while I go discuss our plans with the others" he told them then left the area heading back to where the others were.

Sam and Ava started to look kind of concerned as Benny looked at them with the same conflicted look.

"Benny, please tell us what happened, did you manage to convince him to help us or not?" he asked again in fretful tone.

"Yeah, please, we really need to know" Ava pleaded.

Benny just gave out a little sigh as he had not too happy look on his face. "Well, Sam, Ava, it's like this, there is some good news and some bad news" he told them.

Both Sam and Ava had worried looks on the faces as they started to sense the worst.

"Uh, Oh, I hate to know what the bad news is" Ava said.

"Yeah Benny, something tells me this isn't good at all what happened" Sam replied in a very impatient tone.

"Now, calm down, first let me tell you the good news. Zadkiel is planning a rescue mission for Castiel, he's going the round up the others to all go find these ghouls and hunt them down and do whatever necessary to get Castiel back, that's his main priority right now" Benny told them.

Sam face expression changed from worried to relief.

"That's great, we will do whatever we can to help get Cas back" Sam said.

"Hey, but what about the bad news now" Ava reminded.

Benny had that unhappy look on his face one again and seemed reluctant to tell them this part of the news.

"Don't tell us, you couldn't get through to Zadkiel?" Sam added as he didn't need Benny to explain it to him.

Benny shook his head. "No, no matter what I said he just insisted that it wasn't his responsibility and that his place was here now as leader to all of us. He just doesn't want to go back to earth and get involved with human problems again" he explained.

"No, we don't accept that, that can't be it" Sam cried out upset.

Benny just shrugged his shoulders. "I'm sorry, you all I did my best, but it was no use" he told them.

"Hey, we are not just giving up, not when this is Dean's future is at stake. We'll do whatever it takes to get him back even if we have to drag him back ourselves" cried out Ava anxiously as her frustration was growing.

"Hey, settle down there, I was going to tell you I got more possible good news" Benny said.

Both Ava and Sam had quick surprised expressions on their face.

"What do you mean Benny, tell us" cried out Sam anxiously.

Benny took a breath and spoke up. "Well, I mean Castiel" he told them.

Sam and Ava both looked confused.

"What about Cas?" Sam asked.

"I just figured that if I couldn't get through to him maybe Castiel can. I mean the two of them were quite tight when the last time Castiel was trapped here from what I gathered, more so than we are. They had a sort of bond I guess only two angel can have, so maybe Castiel can persuade him to go back with you guys and help Dean. He could be the only one that would be able to get to him, as Zadkiel said himself, Castiel was the only creature in this place that truly gets him and when we rescue him from those vamps and from Eve, we can ask him to speak to him" Benny explained.

"And if Castiel can't get to through to him?" Sam asked.

Benny just sighed. "Well, lets hope for Dean's sake he can" he told him.

Soon Benny walked both Sam and Ava back to the camp where the others were, and they entered as Zadkiel was giving a speech to the others as he was recruiting them all into his mission to rescue Castiel with some objecting not wanting to fight other creatures anymore while others were board agreeing with Zadkiel they should be willing to save those who need as that's part of what they stand for.

"Not all of you have to come, but I need as many fighting men and women as possible in order to accomplish this mission" he told the crowd.

"You can count us in Zadkiel" said one of a werewolf couple.

"Us too" said one of group of shapeshifters.

Many others also volunteered themselves and finally Sam heard a familiar woman's voice say, "I'm in" as he turned around and saw a familiar face that wasn't there among the creatures when he first arrived in this area of the cave.

The woman was none other than Amy Pond, his old childhood friend who turned out to be a kitsune, who he ran into years later as a single mother and unfortunately, Dean killed after he was willing to let her go when she killed few lowlife humans to save her son's life despite swearing off killing for good. That incident briefly caused a riff between him and Dean since he felt Dean undermined him by killing her without his knowledge and lying to him about it. He did forgive him shortly later on as he didn't want to hold a grudge and he understood Dean's mindset as a hunter on why he felt he had to do it even if he didn't agree with is decision and still wished he spared her.

Besides, he knew if he never gotten to know Amy, what she was like and they had a real bond, as they both could relate to each other to an extent, he would have been more willing to kill her too. Sam always wondered if Dean had some regrets after he returned to purgatory bringing back his vampire friend Benny, as he had changed a bit in his thinking about creatures. Benny sure was an exception to the rule so Sam was curious if he would have thought differently about Amy, although he never had the nerve to ask him. And now she was here among these creatures with Benny which was ironic. He never thought of the possibility of seeing her in this place as he hadn't thought about her for a long time, but he had to admit it was kind of good seeing her again. And her now among Zadkiel's group, he didn't seem so surprised as it would make since.

"Amy" he cried out upon seeing her.

Amy quickly turned to her and when they glared at each other face to face, they both smiled. She looked the same, the last time he saw her although her jacket and blouse were a bit dirty and looked kind of worn out and her red hair was pulled back.

"Hey Sam, you actually know that chick or I should say creature?" Ava asked.

"Yeah, it's an old friend of mine" he told her.

"A friend, you mean just like Benny is an old friend of Dean's"?" she asked him.

Sam nodded his head. "Yeah, you can say that" he said still looking at Amy.

"Wow, I tell you, you and your brother do make some strange friends for hunters" Ava said, shaking her head a bit.

"Oh, my god Sam" Amy finally cried out.

"Hey, you know this human?" one of the male creatures asked.

"Yes, I do, we go way back" she replied as she walked up to Sam until they were only a few inches apart from each other smiling like two old friends who haven't seen each other in a long time.

"I would like to say it's great seeing you again on different circumstances, but I can't help but feel relieved to see a familiar face after all this time" she said.

"Yeah, same here, I mean you look great, I guess" Sam said.

"Yeah, so do you?" Amy replied noticing how wet he is.

Just then Ava made a coughing sound, gesturing to him introduce her. Sam quickly turned to Ava realizing he's forgotten all about her during his shock of seeing Amy again.

"Oh, I'm sorry, Amy this is Ava, she's a friend, and my brother's girlfriend" he said turning back to Amy.

"And Ava this is Amy Pond, an old friend of mine, we go very way back" Sam went on now briefly turning back to Ava and then to Amy again.

The two women glanced at each other in a friendly way.

"Well, nice meeting you under weird circumstances" Ava said.

"Same here" said Amy.

"Well, if you're an old friend of Sam here, than you must be alright for a creature" Ava replied.

"Thanks, I think" Amy said as both women just looked awkward while trying to be friendly.

Sam decided to break the ice between them. "You, know it's weird seeing you in this place among these folks, I didn't see you here earlier" he told her.

"Well, I was in another part of the cave, sometimes I just need to get away and have some alone time, I mean It can be quite crowded with these folks" Amy said.

"Yeah, about that, how did you get involved with this crowd?" Sam asked.

"When I first got here, I was all alone and it was me against them, the other creatures in this place for quite awhile. Eventually, I was lucky to find others just like myself, other kitsunes and for some time we stuck together to survive against the other creatures. It really was an us against them and survival of the fittest here" she explained.

"And then what happened?" Sam asked.

"Well, many of us got slaughtered by the others here, then there were disagreements and opposing views among each other that caused tension and some left to go on their own. Finally, some of us came upon Zadkiel and Benny who rescued us when we were in danger and Zadkiel convinced some of us to go with him away from all the fighting and killing and just live in harmony among a diverse group of creatures and it seemed like a reasonable solution. I was tired of the fighting and killing, never liked it and wanted to be away from all of it, so I and a few others went with him while the rest just went on their way just hoping to survive" Amy finished.

"So, you became one of Zadkiel, members of this little hippie cove?" Sam replied sarcastically.

"You can say that and it's the best choice I ever made. It doesn't matter who we are, we all share the same goal living in peace and surviving together co-existing. We really are a community here" Amy said.

"Yeah, a right utopia for your kind, you could say" Ava added.

Amy didn't respond to Ava's sarcastic remark, but she had a look on her face that showed she felt a bit funny about it.

"And hey, I just thought of something, your 'old friend' here is now with Dean's 'old friend', kind of ironic yeah" she added.

"Yeah, strange world" Amy responded back.

Sam glanced at Ava again. "Ava, if you don't mind, I would like continue have a word with Amy in private, if that doesn't bother you?" he asked her.

"No, not all, by all means, you and your old friend should rehash, or whatever, I don't mind hanging out here among the monster enclave" she said.

"You don't have nothing to worry about, nobody here will lay a finger on you, Zadkiel wouldn't have it anyway" Amy told her.

"Oh, no, I'm not afraid, believe me, just have your private moment with you old friend, I'll be okay really" Ava said. "

Thanks Ava" Sam said and he led Amy away out of the to the same spot they were at with Benny and Zadkiel for a private conversation.

"Okay, Sam what do you want to say to me in private, but before you even say that tell me exactly why are you and your little friend here? When got back, I heard talk that Benny brought back two humans in our shelter, but I couldn't believe it when I saw it was you, so you need to give me an explanation to what the hell is going on?" Amy replied real eagerly.

"Okay, look, me and Ava and our friend Castiel are here because of my brother" Sam replied.

"What?" Amy cried out.

"It's a long story Amy" he said.

"I have all the time" Amy replied.

Sam filled Amy in on most of what happened that led up to them being in purgatory and now Castiel was taken captive by some leviathans who want to deliver him to Eve, which Amy already heard about since Castiel is an old friend of Zadkiel and exactly what their mission is. Amy listened taking all of this in.

"Wow, your brother really got himself into a fine mess" she said after Sam had finished.

"Amy, we really need Zadkiel's help but so far he refused and Benny's hoping once we rescue Castiel he can reach him" Sam said.

Amy just sighed and slightly rubbed her hair. "You know, Sam I just don't know. Zadkiel is a great leader to us all and we're lucky to have him. Of course, if he really had in his heart to do this, we wouldn't stand in his way and Benny is a great choice to replace him, but if Zadkiel's heart is to remain here, there isn't anything you could do about that. Besides, many of the folks here wouldn't want him to leave, me included, we owe a lot to him and he's not just our leader or savior but friend" she said.

"I understand Amy, really, but my brother is really in trouble, we need him more than you do right now. You said it yourself that you can survive without him and Benny could take up the reigns and be a great leader, I know that myself. I know that you would miss him but please understand my brother's life is at stake and so is Castiel's who said he would take his place if Zadkiel refused, he's like family to us too, we can't lose him Amy" Sam pleaded giving his puppy dog eyes look.

Amy looked touched by his words and his puppy dog look always got to him even as kids.

After a brief pause, she just sighed. "I get it, Sam and I'm very sympathetic to what you're going through believe me, if this Castiel can get through to Zadkiel and convince to do this, I won't stand in his way, and you're right, Benny would be a great choice to fill his shoes if he does go, but I won't lie and say I wouldn't miss Zadkiel, he's been a great to many of us. If it wasn't for him, I wouldn't have found a true place that I can call home and feel welcome, living in peace, not out there doing what I had to do to survive from the other creatures. I really hated all that kill or be killed life and was glad that I'm free from it" Amy told him.

Sam nodded his head understanding her feelings. "Yeah, Benny told me this is a haven of sorts for creatures who want to just live in peace" he explained.

"It is, of course, Zadkiel is going to rounding up folks to help rescue your mutual friend Castiel from those leviathans, before Eve gets of hold of him if she hasn't already" Amy said.

Sam had a worried look on his face, fearing that maybe the leviathans already brought Castiel to Eve, who according to them planned to torture him rather than kill him, and it would be a lot riskier to get him away from Eve, powerful being herself.

"I pray that she doesn't yet, I mean I would feel responsible if anything happened to Cas. He's in this mess to help us he's like another brother to us" Sam said.

Amy then placed her had on his shoulder to reassure him.

"Hey, maybe by luck you're right and she doesn't have him yet and we have a better chance of saving him, just be hopeful" she told him.

Sam smiled glad that she was making him feel better and Amy smiled back at him. Then his smile went away and he had a serious look on his face, as he had to nerve to say something to her that he wanted to for a while now since seeing her again. Sam just swallowed and prepare for he was about to say.

"You know Amy, uh, about my brother, I know what happened back on earth and I just wanted to…." he replied awkwardly but Amy just cut him off placing her hand in his in a friendly way.

"Hey, you don't have to say anything all Sam, it's water under the bridge" she told him in an understanding tone.

Sam continued looking awkward as still just wanted to get what he had to say off his chest.

"Yeah, but Amy, my brother, he really did believe he was making a right choice he thought I couldn't, he truly believe it was dangerous just letting you go and everything" he explained.

"I understand, Sam really, if you're worried that I hold a grudge and all, I don't" she told him.

"You don't, even when he, you know?" Sam asked.

Amy shook her head. "Well, at least not anymore. I'm not going to deny that when I first got here, I was angry and bitter that I was stuck in this place mostly for my son's sake than my own. I feared without me around, Jacob could never learn how to properly control his urges and I wouldn't be able to protect him anymore and he would be easy prey to other hunters. But after all this time, Jacob still isn't here from what I've learned, I mean word would get around if a kid would arrive here since it hardly happens. But, if he's not here that mean's he's still on earth and still alive, hopefully he's doing well.

I admit I was also angry that I was robbed of being his mother much longer, watching him grow up and he's probably almost a man by now, and sometimes it does scare to think that he's in trouble and being hurt or something like that or he's hurting others, but I just have to hope that he's doing well, I taught him enough what to do if anything ever happened to me and to never take innocent human lives. I guess in a way I'm relieved your brother spared my son, I least grateful for that and I've learned to let go of any anger and rage I felt after finding Zadkiel" she finished.

Sam was relieved to hear that Amy was over any hard feelings even though she's entitled to them as he feared she wouldn't want to help them.

"You know, Amy for what it's worth, I don't think Dean really wanted to go through with it. And knowing my brother the way I do, I know he has no care in the world in killing monsters if he or we think it will protect humanity but with you I can tell even if he didn't express it with words, he didn't like doing what he did, but just felt he had to, maybe because of me, he knew you saved my life when we were kids, and he didn't really see you as evil just dangerous" Sam explained.

Amy slightly sighed again. "Yeah, I still remember when he came to the house and spoke to me just before he put the knife in my… chest" she explained hesitant to finish her sentence before she went on. "He was giving me this speech about one day the shoe will drop and I will eventually kill again even though I swore to him I wouldn't. He even told me he was sorry after he put the knife into me and I could tell he meant it" she said.

Sam just kept silent looking quite awkward especially when she explained how Dean stabbed her. He still hated the thought of Dean plunging that knife into her and ending her life after he allowed her to live even if he had forgiven him for it and understood his reasoning, a part of him would always wished things could have been different and he regretted what Amy had to go through.

"Dean, would never apologize when he killed in the past, so if he did, he must have really hated what he felt he had to do, and for the record, he told me, he spared your son, so I'm sure he's alright wherever he is" Sam said although he wasn't sure himself.

"I hope so" Amy said in with a sort of sad look on her face.

Then she changed her expression and wanted to change the subject. "What about you, you said you forgave your brother, I hope what happened didn't affect your relationship too much as you told me how close the two of you are and all" she said.

"Yeah, I admit I was mad for awhile but it didn't last long and we patched things up and I understood his perspective, he must of thought I was too close to you to think clearly" Sam said.

"And were you, I mean do you wish you handled things differently after everything?" Amy couldn't help to ask.

"I can't honestly say, Amy, I mean you were killing people even though I understand why you did it and all and I believe you were telling me the truth when you swore that you wouldn't do it again, but I don't know, anything is possible. There's no guarantees that something would happen in the future, I mean Dean wasn't too wrong on that, and I might have let my history between us to affect my judgment" Sam told her.

Amy had a bit of a defeated look on her face. "I see, and I understand too" she told him trying not to show any emotions, but Sam could his words did hurt a bit.

"Hey, I'm not saying you would have slipped for sure, or if you did, it wouldn't have been on purpose, but face it, we can't predict the future, we couldn't be 100% for sure, I mean you got to understand it from our perspective, before you we had spared a vampire chick who wouldn't take human life only fed on animal's blood, but when we saw her again, she told us that she had killed after the situation with Eve who was on earth at that time, and she begged us to kill her. We couldn't be sure something similar could happen again, Amy, I am sorry and really do wished things turned out better for you" Sam told her.

"Look I get it and I'm not mad Sam, honest, I don't hold any more grudges not against you or your brother and I will do anything in my power to help your friend Castiel if that's what your worried about and of course he's Zadkiel's friend too" Amy told him.

Sam just smiled in relief that things are good between them. "Thanks Amy that means a lot and to Ava too" he said.

"Yeah, is she a hunter too?" Amy asked him. Sam nodded.

"Yes, and she's a good one too, can really hold her own and kick ass, which is why Dean fell for her so much" Sam said.

"Well, I think I like her already minus the hunter part, but I will caution you and that Ava not to mention that you are hunters to anybody here. Some of the creatures already don't trust humans and with good reasons but if they knew you were hunters, they will see you as the enemy and it would make it harder for Zadkiel to convince them to help you with your angel friend, okay" Amy urged him.

"Hey, you got nothing to worry about that part his safe with me and Ava and I don't think Benny would give us away either knowing the risks" Sam said.

"Yeah, Benny will come up with a convincing story about you two maybe say you dabbled in magic or something, you know Sam, I still find it funny that Benny is an old pal of Dean's considering we also go way back and now me, and Benny are part of the same crowd in this place" Amy said smiling trying to make light of the situation.

"Yeah, I like to say small world and all" Sam said.

"And I really can't picture you brother having a vampire friend or any of us beings as friends, I barely know him but from what I saw, he didn't give off the vibe he would have anything to do with that sort" Amy replied.

"Normally, he wouldn't but he and Benny went through a lot when they were trapped in this place for year and all few years back" Sam said.

"Yeah, Benny did mention making friends with a human and that this human pal even brought him back to earth with him for awhile but I didn't picture it being your brother. Around that time, I was still with my fellow kitsunes and we must of been further off on the other side, I think as I never met neither of them, in fact I didn't meet Benny or Zadkiel until a couple of years ago, after Benny came back to this place" Amy said.

"Well, like I said, small world or not" Sam said.

"Hey, lets get back and here what Zadkiel is planning regarding rescuing your friend" Amy said.

"Yeah, good idea but I'm glad we had this moment to talk Amy and it really is good seeing you again, I'm glad you find someplace safe here" Sam told her.

"Yeah, good seeing you too, Sam" Amy said as they both just smiled.

The two of them then just walked together heading back to the area where the others glad that they both had this private moment together ready to face their new challenge that is rescue mission for Castiel. Sam just hoped in the end, they will all accomplish what they came here for and that is to bring Zadkiel back with them on Earth so they can save Dean. Nothing else mattered.
