Chapter 27 Mission Accomplished and a New Plan
The group all headed back to the cave and the others left behind were all thrilled to see that everybody survived. Zadkiel introduced the others to Castiel as he had already filled Castiel on what happened after he returned to earth the last time he was in purgatory about his little community he formed in the cave with all the creatures of different species. Castiel was quite impressed as only Zadkiel could be a group of different creatures together all co-existing. When Zadkiel brought up him knowing the reason of him along with Sam and Ava's reasons for arriving in purgatory to seek him out and why, he made it clear he had no intention of going with him back to earth as his place was there his new family as their leader and felt he filled purpose there.
Benny managed to convince Castiel to talk to Zadkiel alone to discuss it more and Castiel agreed hoping he could persuade him if he got some alone time with him. The two of them set off in another area of the cave to get some privacy while the others remained behind. Both Sam and Ava could help but wish they could be a fly on the wall to hear what they are saying hoping Castiel could be the one to get through to him since they and Benny had failed. Sam even began to pace back and forth as they waited for them to return with a final answer while Ava who stood next to him just leaned up against a wall.
"Hey, quit pacing, you're making me a bit nervous here" she cried out to him. Sam stopped what he was doing and turned to face her.
"I can't help it, it's killing me not knowing what they are saying, I mean can Castiel really be able to convince him afterall, none of us could" he replied.
Benny who was nearby came over to him.
"Don't fret some much there pal, I'm sure Castiel is the only one that could get through to him more so than me, I mean from what he told me, he has great respect for Castiel, they had a strong bond as fellow angel the last time they Cas was trapped in this place. I guess that made their bond more special than mine, he's probably only the few people that can really get to him" he told Sam.
"Yeah, I think Benny is right, we just got to trust that Castiel can make this happen" Ava added.
Sam just took quick sigh.
"I really hope so, just wish I knew what they were saying already" he said.
"Hey, just have some patience there buddy" Benny said.
"Yeah, Sam listen to Benny, maybe it's better you take your mind of this, so you won't be a nervous wreck" Amy who had also been standing near Sam couldn't help but chime in. "Like what, talk about the weather?" said Sam sarcastically.
"I know, why don't we just great we kicked those leviathans' asses today and with the help with all these creatures here. You know I never thought I teamed up with vamps, werewolves, kitsunes and all the things that go bump in the night but it was so weird that we were all on the same side with the same goal, that's something to tell the old gang back home" Ava said.
"Yeah, that was really weird specially having both you and Amy here with us all together" Sam said glancing at Benny then Amy.
"Yeah, it was kind of weird for us too, seeing you again Sam and knowing that me and Benny both have a past with you and your brother" Amy said.
"It's still weird for me knowing you and Dean each had monsters for pals, I no offense you too" Ava replied embarrassed that she used the word monster.
"Don't worry none taken we're used to that" Benny replied.
"Yeah, same here, I mean, I've been called worse" Amy said.
"Look, I appreciate all your help, we wouldn't have gotten Castiel out if it hadn't been for all of you" Sam said.
"Same here, was good we were all on the same side on this" Ava added.
"Hey, we were glad to be a help, me and Cas go way back too and he's tight with Zadkiel and all" Benny replied.
"That goes double for me, I will say if this Castiel does get through Zadkiel we're all going to miss him here, but I know Benny will be great to fill his role and Zadkiel will trust him to take his place" Amy said.
"If Zadkiel asks me too, I will do all the best to take over as the new leader here" Benny said.
Just then Castiel and Zadkiel finally returned from where they were talking in private when they spot Sam and Ava as they glance at them eagerly Zadkiel turns to Castiel and murmurs, "You should be the one to tell them" as Castiel nods and Zadkiel walks away. Castiel just head right over to where Sam and Ava are as they walk up to him with Benny trailing behind at the same time. As soon as they approach each other, Castiel shakes his head.
"I'm sorry Sam, I couldn't convince him to agree" he told them with a sad look on his face.
"What!" cried out Sam as Ava just looked on disappointed.
"Hey look, I tried to reason with him on why we need him. Told him how he could be of greater good to humanity again like he was before. I tried everything to convince him but he could not be persuaded no matter what I said. He insists that his place is here now as the leader to his followers and he doesn't belong anywhere else" Castiel said with the same disappointed look on his face knowing that he failed in his mission.
"No, this can't be, we came all this way, there has to be a way to convince, we can't give up now!" Sam cried out.
"Yeah, Sam's right, this was our only hope" Ava said still trying to process this in.
"I'm sorry guys, I did my best, but it just wasn't enough. I feel so terrible that I had us come all this way for nothing" said Castiel.
"For what is worth, I'm sorry too, I really thought Castiel could get through to him" said Benny.
"It's not over yet" said Sam with a stern look on his face.
"What do you mean?" asked Castiel curiously.
Sam then glanced towards Ava as they exchanged looks like they knew something nobody else did.
"Well, me and Ava didn't tell you this because we didn't know how you feel about it, but we came up with a backup plan just in case" he told Castiel as both him and Benny just looked confused.
"What backup plan?" asked Casitel.
Sam turned to Benny and looked around hoping nobody overheard.
"Look can we talk in private you, me and Ava?" he asked.
"Hey, I'm not included in this conversation?" Benny replied feeling left out since he already heard enough.
Sam turned to Benny. "Hey, it's better you don't know, just trust us okay" he replied.
Benny looked hesitant at first but then nodded his head. "Alright" he said.
Soon Sam, Castiel and Ava went off somewhere where they can have more privacy. They were now in an secluded area of the cave.
"What is this backup plan?" asked Castiel once they arrived.
"You see, me and Ava feared there was a chance they Zadkiel might refuse. Although we were hoping it would never come to that, as we really were counting on Zadkiel coming with us willingly, we decided we were not going back empty handed no matter what so, we brought something with us to reassure that" said Sam.
"What did you guys bring back?" asked Castiel.
"In the duffel back we brought us handcuffs" said Sam.
"You what!" cried out Castiel.
"I mean, we know Zadkiel doesn't have his grace anymore, but we didn't want to take any chances, so the plan was if Zadkiel turned us down and we couldn't convince no matter what, we would use the handcuffs on him and take him back" said Sam.
"You mean you planned on bring him back by force" Castiel cried out almost yelling.
"Hey, it was only going to be used as a last resort" Ava chimed in.
"Yeah, when all else fails, we could use those handcuffs and we figured you would might come around once you saw how much was at stake" Sam said.
"And what exactly did you think we will do, just handcuff him while his followers watch on, how do you think we could manage that?" Castiel asked in an angry tone.
"We'll we thought we would get alone with him and you could help us get them on him and since you still have your grace, you could transport us to that escape route and we then we can all get out here" Sam said.
"You know Sam, there is still a chance that escape hatch won't work on me or Zadkiel since we are not humans" Castiel told him.
"Well, if not, you do what we already planned transport you and Zadkiel back to where we were when that reaper brought us to this place and we'll contact those reapers to come and get you all" Sam said.
"Yeah, and this backup plan is our only hope now, as we tried it your way" said Ava.
Castiel had a disapproval look on his face not liking any of this. "Hey, Cas, we know he's your friend and all and we really didn't want it to come to this, but this is Dean's life we're talking about. We gotta to do whatever it takes to get him out of mess even kidnap your old angel buddy if that's the only way, I mean we are really backed into a corner here" said Sam.
"Believe us, if there was any other way we would take it, we don't want to force anybody against their will to but if we have no choice, I mean this we prayed and prayed that Zadkiel would come with us willingly, I mean we know he's your friend an all but if Dean is really like family to you, you would understand" Ava said.
"Look Cas, Ava is right, we hate to do this but Dean is what is important right now so, we hoped you would be onboard with us on this since there is no other option" Sam quickly spoke up hoping that Castiel will see things their way and go along as they assumed he would when he realized their was no other way.
However, Castiel just shook his head.
"No, Sam, Ava, I can't go along with this. I told Zadkiel that I respected his choice and I'm not going back on my word by helping you guys in kidnapping him" he told them.
"But, Cas, this is the only way now. There is no other way to help Dean, we got to this" Sam cried out in a pleading voice.
But Castiel didn't look like he was swayed by what Sam said.
"No, Sam, there is no way I'm going to take part in forcing Zadkiel into taking Dean's place if that's not what he wants to do, not after he saved me from the leviathans and from Eve. I owe him a lot and won't repay him by betraying him for my own agenda and I won't let you two do this either" Castiel.
"Hey, I know he's your friend and all but we thought you would understand that this is Dean's life we're talking about from what everyone says your like family to them another brother, I guess we assumed you would choose him first" Ava replied.
"I love Dean too, and you're right he is like a brother to me, both you and him are like my brothers more so than any of my brothers and sisters in heaven, but after everything I been through with Zadkiel, and him willing to rescue me, I won't put this on him if he doesn't really want him and already told him I would respect his wishes. So no, you're not doing this and I will stop you two even if I have to put you're a sleep with the touch of my finger which I can do" Castiel said.
Both Sam and Ava just turned and glanced at each other then back at Castiel distress that their backup plan is going the way they thought it would.
"But Cas, what else can we do?" Sam asked.
"You already know what we can do, I will follow my backup plan instead where I will take Dean's place if we couldn't convince Zadkiel, that was always the plan and it still is" he told them sternly.
Sam just shook his head. "No, there is no way we can let you do that, Cas, taking Zadkiel back with us is the better choice" Sam said. "No, it's just the convenient choice, but we are doing this my way, I'm volunteering myself to be the new Death so Dean doesn't have to" he told them.
Sam was now getting anxious as he couldn't bear the idea of Castiel making such a sacrifice to help Dean when they could just kidnap Zadkiel and hand him over the reapers plus he knew Dean wouldn't be onboard with this either.
"No, Cas, we not letting you offer yourself to those reapers, no way in hell!" Sam cried out in a distressed tone.
"Yes, you are Sam, I'm offering myself instead of Dean, that is my choice and I'm not backing down!" Cas cried out as he grabbed a hold of Sam's arms to calm him down and looked sternly in his eyes.
"Sam, I appreciate you wanting to save me too even though don't like that you came up with this backup plan behind my back but I can appreciate the sentiment but this is how this is going to go. When we get back to earth, we will contact those reapers and tell them that we failed and I will offer myself instead. It's better it's me an angel rather than Dean, a mortal to be the new Death, and it will be okay" he told Sam as Sam looked sad almost like he was about to cry and Castiel also looked sad as he let Sam go.
"You guys are mean a lot to me and if this is the way I can help you so be it, but I will miss you all including Adam and Charlie everyone of you but I know you will be alright" he told them. Sam just had the same sad look on his face as he hated the idea he was going to lose Castiel in order to save Dean.
"Oh Cas, we can't let you do this" he said.
"Hey, Sam I think Castiel is right about this" Ava replied.
Sam turned to her looking a bit surprised she would say such a thing.
"What?" he cried out other.
"Hey, we tried alright but Castiel is more than willing to offer himself and it's his choice, and it's better than kidnapping his angel friend and forcing him against his will to take Dean's place, I mean here at least Castiel is offering himself on his own free will. I know he's your friend and you're all like family but Dean is your family and he means a lot to me too and this may be selfish but I won't lose him even if it means letting Castiel take his place instead, I'm sorry" she told Sam with a sad and guilty look on her face.
Before Sam had a chance to say something else, Castiel interrupted him.
"Listen to Ava, I know this is hard and like I said before, I will miss you guys like crazy but I'm going to do this with or without your blessing and there is nothing you can do and say to change my mind" Castiel said firmly laying down the law.
Sam just stood there and said nothing with a sad look on his face, unhappy of the thought of losing Castiel in order to save Dean but what really bothered him about it all is deep down, he knows if he had to make a choice between them, he would choose Dean, his real brother over Castiel if he had no other options despite Castiel being like another brother to him and he hated it but was true.
"I'm so sorry Cas" was all Sam said feeling rather defeated.
"There is nothing to be sorry about Sam, you guys mean to the world to me and would do anything to save you even if it means giving up my own will. Besides, it's not like I'm going to die or anything, I'll just be the new Death, it could be awesome as you mortals say" Castiel replied trying to look on the brighter side of all of this and his own attempt of being sarcastic.
"But it still hate the thought that it has to be you, even though I'm glad Dean will be spared, I never meant it to be at your expense" said Sam.
"Well, look at this way, as the new Death, I'll be more powerful being, the big boss or head honcho as you all say. I'll be ruling over the reapers and who knows perhaps that was the purpose that God said was meant for me, being the new Death. I've been searching for ages around the world to find out what this new purpose was and it could have been this the whole time" Castiel said.
"We're still going to miss, you me and everybody" said Sam looking like he was about to cry.
"And I will miss all of you but, It's not like it's goodbye forever. Who knows, you could see me again. You can summon me up for anything that involves life and death, I'll do what I can to help although there will be no guarantees, I can be able to fix everything, as the new Death I'll have to be devoted to natural order not bending the rules all the time" Castiel told him.
"Okay" was all Sam could say still looking sad and a bit teary-eyed.
Soon the two embraced each other as Ava stood and watched looking sad and touched about it all. Later, they all returned to the part of the cave where the other creatures were. Benny asked about the backup plan but Sam just told him it was nothing and informed him about Castiel offering himself as the new Death to save Dean. Benny felt sorry that Castiel had to make the sacrifice but was glad Dean would be saved now and Castiel thanked him for his part in saving him from the leviathans. Sam talked to Amy some more while Ava went to have a conversation with Zoya the vampire.
"Well, I'm glad your little friend was saved by those horrible leviathans and I hope whatever mission you came here for was accomplished" she said.
Ava just shook her head. "Not really, we didn't get exactly what we wanted but we tried and it will be okay in the end" she said.
"Well, that is very good to know" Zoya told her as the little girl lurked around looking at Ava.
"I never thought I would have a friendly conversation with a vampire, no offense and all" Ava said.
"I don't take any offense, I never thought I would have the same with a hunter" Zoya replied in a soft voice so others wouldn't hear.
Ava just looked surprised and quickly looked around hoping nobody overheard. "You knew?" she asked her.
"Yeah, I pegged you and your tall guy friend over there as hunters the moment I saw you two" she said.
"But how, and why didn't you anything, I mean we are the reasons you're in this place" Ava said.
"I don't have any hate towards hunters, at least not anymore. To be honest, when I was still a human, I would have been scared of creatures like myself and would be on the hunters side. I haven't forgotten what it was like to be human, but many of the others wouldn't understand and wouldn't have been so welcoming if they knew" she told her.
"Well, thanks again for not giving us away" Ava said.
"No need to thank me, I understood that you two must have come here for a good reason and I just hope everything turns out well for you all even if you didn't get everything you wanted" said Zoya.
"Yeah, me too" Ava replied.
Meanwhile, Sam and Amy were still having their conversation. "Look, Sam if you happened to one day come across my son, I need you to promise me that you won't hurt him, no matter what he doing" Amy said.
Sam just looked hesitant. "Look Amy, I can't guarantee anything especially if your son is hurting people and a danger" he replied.
"I understand Sam, but Jacob is just a boy, he was so young when I was taken from him, if he's doing anything it's only to survive, he wouldn't know any different if he's doing anything wrong. You can help him instead to learn to survive a different way if that's the case, just the way I did, he's still so young he has plenty time to change his ways, please don't hurt him promise me Sam, after everything did for your friend this is the only thing I ask of you" she pleaded with him.
Sam just felt guilty knowing he would have to kill her son if he didn't have any choice he was out there killing people. At least with Amy, she had good reasons and planning to stop but what if her son is different. What if he's now so blood thirsty he can't stop. But then again, maybe Amy is right, he's just still young enough he could help him change his ways if that's the case, but what would Dean say about it, he wondered.
"Alright Amy, if we ever run into your son, we will try to help him if we can but I can't make any guarantees, okay" Sam told her. Amy nodded.
"I guess I'll settle for that, I just hope it doesn't come to anything extreme" Amy said.
"Same here, Amy" said Sam.
Later, Sam, Ava and Castiel were saying their goodbyes to Benny and Zadkiel. Castiel and Zadkiel briefly hugged.
"Goodbye my old comrade, I am sorry I couldn't give you what you wanted but I wish you the best of luck" he told him.
"Same to you old friend" Castiel replied back. Meanwhile Sam and Ava turned to Benny.
"I'm sorry too that you didn't get what you want" he told them.
"Me too, the only thing good out of all of this is that Dean will be safe" Sam replied looking a bit sad.
"Yeah, good about Dean and even Zadkiel, just wished it turned out a bit different" Benny said.
"Me too" said Sam. "Hey, yeah and thanks for everything, always be grateful" Ava added.
"I'm glad I was of any help to you all" he told them as he gave Sam a nice pat on the arm.
Then Castiel turned to Benny as Benny put his hand on his shoulder. "I wish the best of luck to you my friend, whatever happens" he told him.
"Thanks a lot for everything too" Castiel told him as they too briefly hugged.
Then Benny turned to Sam again. "Oh, by the way say hello to Dean for me, let him know I still miss the old son of gun" he replied.
"Yes, we will" Sam said.
Then Amy came out to them and gave Sam a little hug. "Goodbye Sam, best the luck to you" she told him.
"You too Amy, I'm glad you found somewhere you can call home in this place" Sam told her.
Then she turned to Ava. "And you take care too and take care of Sam here" she told her.
"I will" said Ava.
Then Zadkiel walked over to Sam. "I can be at least some help to you by leading you where the escape hatch, I know the way" he told them.
"No, that's okay, I remember the way I can transport them there right now" Castiel said who still had his grace and his powers.
"Okay, Castiel very well, I'm sorry I it felt you came all this way for nothing" he told them as he looked over at Sam and Ava.
"Well, I wouldn't say it was all nothing" Sam replied as he briefly glanced at Amy.
"Anyway, good luck to whatever happens to you all" he said with a guilty look on his face.
"Thank you and good luck to you all as well" Sam told him.
"Same here, no hard feelings and all" Ava said.
After saying all their goodbyes, Castiel took hold of Sam and Ava and then within moments teleported to from the cave to area where the escape hatch its.
"You know, there is still a chance I won't be able to leave through there like you two" Castiel reminded them.
"Don't worry, if that's the case we will stick to our plan to get you out, just remember to be at the spot where we were when we first came to this place, okay" Sam said.
Castiel just nodded. Soon they all started climbing up the hill where the rocks were and in no time, the sky suddenly became waves of blue light like something out of of a science fiction movie and it suddenly became very windy. They all could feel the wind heavily against them as it was quite strong. Sam climbed first and turned around and took Ava's hand who was having a bit of trouble. Then when they were close enough to the where the blue waves were, Sam turned to Ava.
"Okay, you first" he told her and within moments, Ava lunged through blue waves and disappeared into it.
Then Sam turned to Castiel who was climbing the hill too.
"You go on Sam, I'm right behind you" he told Sam.
Sam waited for Castiel to finish climbing the rocks and then he turned and lunged into the blue waves too.
