Chapter 28 A Quick Change In Plans
The next thing they knew, Sam and Ava were now in the middle of a forest and it was dark outside. They both knew they were no longer in purgatory but now in the middle of a forest somewhere in Maine. They just stood there and looked around their surroundings happy to be out of that place.
"Good to be back, I think although I don't know exactly where we are" Ava replied as she kept looking about.
"All it matters is that we're back" Sam said.
"What about Castiel?" Ava suddenly remembered him and wondering if he got out like that did. Sam's eyes lit up as he quickly looked around for him.
"Oh, Cas, I don't think he made it out" he cried out.
"I mean he was right behind us" Ava said anxiously.
"Since he didn't follow us out, I guess that means that escape hatch didn't work with him because it was only made for humans" Sam said.
"I just assumed him being in a human body would count" Ava replied.
"I guess it didn't" Sam said.
"So now what do we do?" Ava cried out still in a worried tone.
"Just stick with the plan, I'll call those reapers to go get Cas out, he should be back at the place we were at when we first arrived like we planned in case he didn't make it out like we did" Sam said.
Then he pulled out his iphone from his pocket and the phone now worked as he called Dean's number since the reapers had his phone. Soon somebody answered.
"Hey, we're back now" Sam said.
"Did you find your angel's pal old buddy like you said?" asked the bearded reaper who answered.
"Yes, but he turned us down flat" Sam said.
"Well, sucks for you or I say your brother, since that leaves him as our new Death since time is running out unless you can find some other replacement" said the reaper.
"Hey, we may not have been able to get him but don't you worry we have a replacement" Sam replied.
"Oh yeah, who?" the reaper asked.
"Castiel volunteered himself if we couldn't find a replacement and he still willing" Sam said sad at the thought of losing Castiel even if it means saving his brother, he still hated the price that was being paid.
"Oh, he did, did he?" remarked the reaper.
"Look, you were willing to accept any replacement and we have one for you, a supernatural being which is better than a mortal, so you got what you wanted" Sam replied in in almost angry tone.
"Hey hey, cool your jets, we will honor our agreement. Just meet us outside our little headquarters alright" the reaper said.
"Well, the thing is Castiel is still trapped in purgatory" Sam replied.
"What?" the reaper yelled.
"You see, there is this escape hatch that works only for humans to get out of that place, but it didn't work for Castiel since he's not human, so that means you got to send your one of your reaper cronies to go get him" he replied.
"Hey, I let one of my crew take you to that place, I didn't agree to going back to get one of you out" the reaper said impatiently.
"Hey, Castiel is willing to be your new Death to spare Dean, so how much trouble is it for you to send one of your gang to go there and get him out, it's quite easy for you guys" Sam said in a frustrated tone.
There was a brief pause then a grunt sound.
"Alright, already, I'll send one of my guys to fetch your angel pal" he said.
"Good, he'll be at the same place we were when we were brought into purgatory" Sam said.
"Fine then, but this better not be a trap, or so help us…." the reaper said before Sam cut him off.
"We know, we know, we are crazy enough to cross you now, with my brother's life at stake, don't you worry" Sam told him.
"Okay, just remember to meet us outside the place as three nights have almost passed, the deadline is getting near okay" the reaper said.
"Got it" Sam replied.
He finished his discussion with the reaper soon after and hung up.
"Oh Sam, I heard some of that, I mean has it really been three nights already?" she asked looking confused and a bit nervous.
"Yeah, I forgot to mention, time moves differently in purgatory" Sam replied.
He looked down at his watch but saw that the time was off. Then Ava got the idea to take out her iphone and dial for the time and it said it was 10:40p.m.
"Oh my god, it's that late? Wow, time really does move differently in that place. I just hope they hurry up and get Castiel out, it won't be too long before time is up" Ava said anxiously.
"Don't worry, we still have time" Sam said.
They waited for a least a couple of minutes as Ava started to grow a bit impatient and started fidgeting about a little. "What is taking so damn long" she cried out.
"Ava, it's only been about two minutes, don't worry, that reaper probably got Cas out by now and he's now looking all around the forest to find us" Sam said.
"You mean he doesn't know exactly where we are, I mean you gave him the location" Ava cried out still impatient.
"I don't even know exactly where we are just in the middle of the woods which is quite large you know, it just will take a while for Cas to find exactly where we are, but he is probably looking everywhere, he's very fast at searching believe me, it wouldn't take him long to search these entire woods" Sam said.
"I hope so" Ava told him. Then suddenly they heard Castiel's voice in a far off distance calling for them.
"Castiel!" Sam yelled looking around the woods.
"Sam, Ava!" Castiel continued to yell out in a distance.
"Cas, we're over here!" Sam hollered.
Then they heard footsteps that was getting closer and Castiel's voice was also getting closer as he continued to yell out until they finally saw him run out from trees. He was now glancing at them and heading his way towards both of them and Sam looked so relieved to see him again and vice versa and Ava also looked thrilled.
"Cas, man, we're so glad to see you, glad you found us" Sam said as Castiel walked up to him and without thinking, he quickly ran up and gave Castiel a quick hug then stepped back.
"Hey, it took me while searching around these woods but I knew I eventually find you guys" Castiel said.
"We got worried when you didn't make it out of that place with us" Sam said.
"Yeah, well that escape hatch doesn't work for my kind after all, but I'm not surprised since it was meant for humans only" Castiel said. "Well, good thing we had a backup plan, I'm glad one of those reapers got you out, called them after we realized you weren't with us" Sam replied.
"I know,, thanks for that" Castiel said.
"Hey, as much as I'm glad for this happy reunion and all but I can't wake to get out of these woods and help Dean" Ava chimed in.
"Well, guys before that, I need to tell you something or maybe it's better I show you first" Castiel said.
"What is it Cas, is there something wrong?" Sam asked looking a bit curious and then worried.
"No, there is something very right" Castiel said with a smile as the turned his head around in the direction of the trees.
"Okay, you can come out now!" he cried out.
"Cas, what's going on?" Sam asked curiously.
"You'll see" said Castiel with a Cheshire grin on his face looking like he knew something they didn't.
Just then they heard footsteps and suddenly a figure stepped out of from the trees heading their way. Both Sam and Ava's eyes lit up as they saw it was none other than Zadkiel walking up towards them. Neither of the two believed what they saw as Zadkiel walked up to where Castiel was and looking right at them.
"Oh snap, Zadkiel, what I mean how?" cried out Sam as he still couldn't believe what he saw.
"Yeah, I mean what happened did you force him to come afterall?" Ava asked equally shocked.
"No, that wasn't necessary" Castiel replied.
"Yes, you all, Castiel is right, I actually volunteered myself" said Zadkiel.
"But, we thought you didn't want to come back, you were so dead set on remaining back there from what Cas told us, I mean what changed your mind?" Sam asked.
"You see, Castiel was right. I was hiding out at that place, hiding out from facing this world, humanity, my duty and feeling like a failure after everything went wrong. I loved being at purgatory, being a leader because it made me feel useful but I part of me always felt like I left behind a void in my life and always wondered what it would have been like if I had been back here on this planet once again being of use to the mortals that I was once assigned to protect. I guess, I was just afraid to admit that when Castiel asked me to return to earth to help save your friend by taking his place. Afraid of change after being in that place all those years" Zadkiel explained.
"But then what changed your mind?" Ava asked him.
"I couldn't stop thinking about what Castiel said about having another chance to help out the human world whom I once protected even when I kept refusing the offer, it still was on my mind and when you all left it really daunted on me, that a how much and letting my fear and pridefulness get in the way plus, I would miss being the leader of my little community back there. But, Benny saw all of this immediately after you all left and he was the one that finally was able to convince me to go for it and he swore that he would take over my role as the leader" Zadkiel said.
"Just like that, Benny could convince you when none of us could?" Sam asked amazingly.
"It wasn't an easy choice for me, plus I like I said before, I was lingering on this for a while now. You Castiel had reached out to me for help and gave me a chance to help the human world again and I just turned you away and left you holding the bag which I feel ever so sorry for. Anyway, after a talk with Benny, I called Castiel back before he had a chance to leave, it's a good thing that escape hatch doesn't work on our kind. Well, anyway, he transported back to our enclave and I told him I changed my mind and apologized for refusing him before now I can let him off the hook. Then I gave a heartfelt farewell to all my followers and left Benny in charge, it was quite an emotional moment for us all then I went back with Castiel to the place he said he would wait at for that reaper to come and get us" Zadkiel finished.
"Wow, you don't know how so glad that you changed your mind" Sam said.
"That goes for me too, I mean this must be a big step for you having to leave behind the place you have called your home for how long and now leave behind all your friends, I kind of feel guilty of putting you on the spot, although we're glad Castiel doesn't have go through it now" Ava said.
"No need to feel guilty, I said before, I realized how glad I am to be able to help my dear old comrade here, and help humanity again and now being this new Death and restoring any chaotic order, I will be a very big and useful me. I always felt needed back at the place, but now I can feel needed here even more" said Zadkiel.
"Well, anyway, we're so glad that you changed your mind" said Sam.
"Yeah, you don't know how much" Ava added.
"Same here" Castiel replied.
"I'm glad just to able to have a purpose again in the human world and now that taking over as Death will be quite the challenge that I can handle, everything will be alright and be restored again and this Dean who you are all so fond of will be let off the hook" Zadkiel said.
Everybody all smiled in delight not believing this wonderful news just when they thought that they hadn't succeeded and they were all prepare for Castiel to take the new Death's place but now it all turned out good for everybody. Sam still felt a bit a guilt of making Zadkiel leave behind the place he called home for centuries and his group of followers at his little community he built but even more so he felt great relief that now Castiel doesn't have to take his place and Dean will be safe, it all turned out well afterall and he couldn't wait to get back to Dean and tell him everything that happened, he will have a story to for him that he won't forget.
"Okay, now I that we got all that straightened, I think it's time we depart this place already and get back to those reapers and finally bring Dean home" Casiel said.
"That's what I was just thinking" Sam replied.
Then everybody took hold of Castiel and he teleported them in moments back now standing outside the abandoned house. Castiel of course, couldn't come inside since the place was warded up. Sam pulled out his iphone dialed the number and soon a reaper answered the phone on key.
"Hey, I figure you already know, we go our original replacement for Dean after all so Castiel doesn't have to fill that role" Sam said.
"Yeah, one of my men came back and told us" answered the bearded reaper.
"So, how do we do this, you hand us Dean and we will hand over the angel" Sam said.
"No, that's not how this works, I will come out with some of my crew and you hand us over our new Death and afterwards, then we will hand you over Dean" said the reaper.
"Hey, how do I know if Dean is even still alive and well, let me at least talk to him first" Sam said.
"Fine" replied the reaper. There was brief pause then he could hear the reaper calling out to his other reapers in the background and soon he heard Dean's voice.
"Hey Sammy, what's up" Dean replied.
"Dean, are you okay?" Sam replied relieved that he sounded fine.
"Just peachy, I've enjoyed my little sleepovers with our buddies here, what's not to love, food, nothing else to do but hang out with gang here, telling stories, sleeping on the old rusty floor and all" Dean replied.
Before Sam had a chance to respond, the bearded reaper spoke again.
"Okay, you heard your brother here is fine and dandy, now I'm sending some of my crew to come out with me to meet you all and there better not be any tricks or a trap as you know if there is, you'll never see Dean again" he said.
"Hey, don't worry, we know, we're not going to risk Dean's life" Sam replied.
"Okay" said the reaper.
After few more seconds he hung up. Then suddenly, the bearded reaper came out of the house with three other reapers and just walked right up to them. As they eyed up Zadkiel the bearded reaper had a smirk on this face.
"Well, looks like you held up your end of the bargain" he said.
"Yes, as you know this is my old friend and comrade Zadkiel, an angel of the Grigori class" said Castiel as he pointed over to Zadkiel introducing.
"I'm happy to make your acquaintance and volunteer my services to become your new boss" he told them.
"A Grigori? Thought they were all extinct" said another reaper.
"Not all of us are, my friend" Zadkiel replied.
"Hey, we got you all your replacement now release my brother" Sam told them getting rather eager.
"Hold the phone, okay, we will release Dean once we get what we want first" said the bearded reaper.
He then turned and nodded to one of the reapers who pulled out Death's ring from his jacket pocket and then handed it to Zadkiel.
"Put this on and then we will set up the ingredients here to make the binding spell" said the bearded reaper.
"There is no use in casting a spell, I assure you I will never remove this ring from my finger ever and that is a promise. You can take my word for it for we Grigori's never lie or break our promises, we are always true to our word. Besides, I care about doing a good service for the human word" said Zadkiel.
"He's right, Zadkiel will never go back on his word when he makes one" said Castiel at his friend's defense.
"Fine, but if you do, there will be consequences for everybody here including your buddy here" said the bearded reaper glancing at Castiel.
"It's a good thing it won't though so can we please get on with this" said Zadkiel firmly.
Then he took the ring from the angel who was holding it out and placed it on his finger which fit easily. Just then a scythe suddenly appeared as Zadkiel was holding it up with one hand and almost everybody except Castiel just looked on with disbelief.
"Where the heck did that come from?" Ava asked curiously.
"Like we said before, once you become the new Death, a scythe appears now that our old Death his gone" said the bearded reaper.
"Okay, anyway glad you got your new Death and all" she told them.
"Thank you for this Zadkiel, I'm really glad you pulled through" Castiel replied.
"I'm glad I decided to change my mind, and now I feel like I have true purpose again, so much than I felt in a long time" said Zadkiel.
"It was great seeing you again after all this time" Castiel told him.
"Same here, my dear old comrade" said Zadkiel.
"Don't mean to interrupt and all but what about Dean?" Sam said feeling eager for his brother to be free. Zadkiel then turned to the reapers.
"Yes, I insist that this Dean be released and let all of my friends go unharmed like you promised them" he told the reapers.
"That's what we intend to do, we don't need them anymore new boss once we go" said the bearded reaper.
He then he stared forward with a blank look and seemed to say to himself, "Okay you can all let him go now, we are about leave".
"Who's he talking to?" Sam asked curiously.
"No need to worry, he just summoning the others back in the house to release your brother. Anyway, we should be off now" Zadkiel said.
"I will miss you" Castiel told him.
"And I will miss you too but fear not dear friend, now that I'm the new death, we may run into each other again someday depending on the circumstances hopefully there are not bad" he told him.
"So, what are you going to do now?" Castiel asked him.
"The same thing the other Death did basically and restore natural order now in the world. Nobody will go before or stay afterwards. I will say I'm going to run a much tighter ship than my processor. That means making a few changes really get things started and I expect my minions here to fall in line" Zadkiel said turning to them.
"We will do all that we can, boss" said the bearded reaper and others all agreed.
"Okay, we are off now, goodbye everyone" Zadkiel said.
"Goodbye, dear old friend" said Castiel.
"Yeah, take care and thanks again" Sam said.
"That goes the same for me" said Ava.
With that, Zadkiel turned and gave a nod to the other reapers and within seconds they all vanished.
"Wow, we really did it, we got your friend to become the new Death and now Dean is saved" Ava said excitedly.
"Yes, couldn't have done it without him" said Castiel.
"I just hope Dean's okay, we can go get him now" said Sam. "The house is still warded, so won't be able to enter" Castiel said.
"Yeah, but me and Sam can and I can't wait to see him" said Ava.
However, before they had a chance to go inside the house, Dean can running out of the house looking all happy to be finally free and ran straight towards them all gleeful and excited. He rushed over and hugged Sam first nearly squeezing him as Sam hugged him back, then he hugged Castiel pretty tight. Then he turned to Ava and hugged her and then gave her a lingering kiss as the other two just stared on awkwardly.
"I'm telling you guys, it is so glad to finally be released from that jail, but I knew that you guys would pull it off and get me out of this, can't thank you all enough" he told them as he put his arms around Sam and Ava and gave Castiel nudge on the shoulder still smiling and feeling gleeful.
"We're just glad to have you back, now that this is finally over we can all head home" Sam said.
"Yeah, same here for me, Dean, I was so worried that I would never see you again and I wasn't going to let that happen, glad we were able to accomplish our mission and I'm ready to get out of here too" said Ava feeling also gleeful that she got Dean back.
"Yeah, let's get of here before those wardens change their minds, but you can fill me in on the whole details back at the bunker" said Dean.
They all agreed to that and within seconds, they all took a hold of Castiel and all vanished into thin air.
Update:
I'm sorry I took so long, longer than usual to post more chapters but had stopped doing this fanfic for awhile doing other things but I haven't forgotten. I even decided to post two new chapters instead of one this time and will make it more of a priority to continue with this story, so be patient. Thank you.
