Chapter 32 A Winchester's Valentine's Day Gone Wrong Part 2
The police were now on the scene. The couple had already woken up before the police arrived staring up at guns being held to their faces and being warned that if they made a move, they would be dead. Neither of the criminal couple dared to move as they were now scared as mice and Dean and Ava could see that they weren't the tough badasses they tried to come off as but two frightened kids who had met up with the wrong people to trifle with. When the cops arrived, they lowered their guns and put them in their van as they didn't want there to be any confusion about who the bad guys were. The police took their statements and arrested the duo on the spot and Dean told them where their guns and pocketknife were, and the cops collected them. Then they had to go with the police to the station to continue to give their statements
"Well, here are again at station only this time we aren't the ones in jails, so I guess we should some thanks in that" replied Ava after both she and Dean gave their statements again to the police and not leaving anything out and now, they just had to wait and were sitting in one of the integration rooms waiting for the cops to let them go.
"Yeah, this is one Valentine's Day we can tell our kids about, falling through threw the ice of the frozen lake while ice fishing and then being held up and nearly bumped off by the psycho duo" Dean said trying to lighten the situation.
"At least they're behind bars where they belong and won't be able to do this to anybody else" Ava said.
"If they haven't already" Dean chimed in.
The police then came back inside the room to talk to them. One of them was an overweight man in a suit and the other was a skinny guy also wearing a suit looking really serious.
"Okay, we just wanted to let you know that everything you said adds up" the overweight cop said.
"Does that mean we are free to go?" Dean asked.
The cop nodded his head. "Yeah, but we just wanted to tell you how lucky you two are. I mean it turns out that those two kids in there are wanted in Ohio for murdering folks at least twice and then stealing their cars, good thing you two got them first" he said with a grin.
"So, we would have been victim number three by those psycho duo there?" Ava asked, shocked, about what she learned.
The cop just nodded his head.
"Looks like it, I guess after killing their last victims, an elderly couple and then stealing their car, they just laid low for a while, got as far away as they could, ditched the car that was found not too long ago and just bided their time until they their next victims to rob and then off so not have any witnesses" he explained to them.
"So, what happens to them now?" Ava asked.
"Hope they get exactly what they deserve which being someone's bitch in the slammer" Dean replied.
"Dean!" Ava cried out a bit surprised at his words even though a part of her wished the same thing.
Dean just shrugged his shoulder. The cop just smirked at what he heard.
"Anyway, normally we contact the authorities in Ohio in hopes of extradite them back there. Unfortunately, in many of these cases recently the state will refuse to come and get wanted fugitives once they cross the state lines and sometimes the state that has them don't want to pay the extra cost to ship them back to the state where he or she is wanted for a crime, so they wind up eventually letting them go" the cop explained.
Both Dean and Ava looked shocked at what they heard.
"What, you mean you're not going to send those thugs back to Ohio where they are wanted for murder!" cried out Ava.
The cop just shrugged his shoulders. "Unfortunately, that's usually how it goes lately, and the state of Kansas is not likely spend money to send them back and the Ohio police may be reluctantly spend the money to come and get them as well" he told them.
"Oh, that's just perfect, this two killed some folks in Ohio and nobody wants to send the thugs back there to face the music because they aren't willing to spend a little dough!" Dean yelled angrily.
"Look, if it was up to me those two nutballs would be shipped off back to where they came from facing the gas chamber, but it's not, and it' just out of my hands, unless you two are willing to press charges for attempted robbery and murder with a lethal weapon, we can charge them for that although they won't serve time for the murders in Ohio" he told them.
Both Dean and Ava looked at each other and nodded their heads reluctantly agreeing.
"Okay, we want to press charges if that's what it takes" Dean said.
"Same here" Ava agreed.
"That's perfect, that it's all settled, we will need you to write down your statements and we will give you two a copy of the report" he told them.
"After this, we would like to get out of here if that's okay" Ava said.
"That's fine, although we will need you to come back here to testify against them" the cop said.
"That we can do we promise," said Dean.
So, with that both Dean and Ava wrote their statements and received copies of the police report and the couple that tried to rob them got booked and all. Afterwards, they were finally allowed to leave although they were in that police station for more than a couple of hours and it felt even longer. Once back inside the van, Ava still wasn't feeling too good about their Valentine's Day trip. Dean really felt bad that he couldn't give Ava the happy Valentine's Day he wanted to give her on this road trip.
"Look, Ava I'm sorry things haven't gone so well, I really am I was hoping this trip would be great for both of us, a chance for us to really be alone together on the road" he told her with a disappointed look on his face.
Ava just turned to him and sighed. "It's not your fault, I mean you couldn't predict this would happen" she told him.
"I know but I still feel somehow responsible for all of this, maybe we should have just stayed home and had a nice romantic dinner at a restaurant, but I had to do something a bit unconventional and more exciting" Dean still feeling down about it all.
"But that's what I always love about you, being willing to do something original and more creative and adventurous and frankly I think a Valentine's Day Road trip is quite romantic" she told him with smile.
"Really?" Dean asked worried that Ava was just saying all of this to make him feel better.
"Really" Ava replied with smile then she sighed again.
"You know I wonder how your brother and Gwen are holding up?" she asked.
"I bet they're having a much better time than we, Sam is probably planning a nice romantic dinner at some fancy restaurant tonight, then hitting the town afterwards. Which reminds me, he texted me some hours ago, I got to call him back to let him know how we're doing but I won't tell him about our little incidents at the frozen lake and our two little guests" Dean said.
"Yeah, Gwen is waiting for me to call her back and we also want catch up, but I will also leave all the bad stuff out" Ava said.
"You know our trip isn't over just yet, we still have plenty of time to enjoy our day and there are still plenty of places to go" Dean told her.
"Yeah, I know, I'm not ready to give up just yet either, besides I'm starving now, can't wait to get a bite. I'm sure our luck will change now with those two thugs behind bars now. I think we are doing the right thing pressing charges against those two, I mean if we didn't, they would just be let go and go out and do the same thing to somebody else" Ava said.
Dean just nodded his head. "Yeah, I know, just wish I could make this special for you" he told her.
"Well, why don't we go for that bite to eat, and I would love to play a good game of pool considering I can beat you" Ava told her.
"We'll see about that there but you're on" Dean said with a grin.
Sometime after noon, the two of them went to get a bite to eat a local diner, then headed for the nearest bar where they got some beer and went to where the pool tables and started playing a game of pool. In no time, they got caught up in the game enjoying themselves forgetting their previous bad fortunes earlier that day. At first Ava seemed to be beating Dean but then he was catching up and it seemed like it was going to be a tie. Then suddenly without noticing Ava accidently poked the guy who was right behind her with her pool stick right in his abdomen as she was prepared to hit the ball and the main yelped in pain. Ava quickly turned around and saw that the man was a large guy with a beard and appeared quite drunk and mean looking as he seemed to be stumbling a bit.
"Hey, watch it, why don't you!" he yelled angrily slurring his words.
"I'm sorry, sir, I didn't see you behind me" Ava said apologetically.
However, the drunk guy still looks angry as he continues to stumble around a bit. "Hmph, stupid bitch!" he yelled as Ava just looked surprised then offended.
"Hey pal, she said sorry, it was an accident, no need to speak that way to her!" Dean yelled angry himself for this stranger insulting his woman.
"Hey, what are you, her father!" the drunk guy yelled back.
"Hey, look please, it was an accident, just let it go" Ava pleaded.
"I don't gotta do nothing, not for some dumbass bitch who don't know to watch what she's doing" the drunk guy fired back.
"I told you before man, stop talking to her that way or else" Dean warned him getting even more angry at the drunk guy.
"Yeah, what are you going to do about it, Nancy!" the drunk guy yelled back.
Just then Dean advanced towards the guy who in turn advanced to him. Just then, Ava stepped in between them to defuse the situation.
"Hey, look Dean just let it go, the guy is obviously drunk" she told him.
"Stay the hell out of this, you dumb broad" said the drunk guy as he shoved Ava out of the way.
"Hey, you keep your hands off her!" yelled Dean now really pissed off.
"Or what, what are you going to do about it, Nancy!" yelled the drunk guy in his face.
Just then as a kneejerk reaction, Dean just straight up punched the guy in the face so hard causing him stumble back a bit. Then the guy lunged at Dean to punch him back but Dean having better reflex plus, he managed to dodge out of the way and the drunk guy missed. Dean landed two more blows at the guy's stomach and face which caused the guy to stumble into another pull table. Now really pissed, he lunged again ready to land another punch but then Ava who felt responsible for this raucous, tried to intervene but just as Dean ducked out of the way, Ava who was behind him got punched in face instead causing her fall to the floor.
Dean turned around looking horrified. "Ava!" he yelled as he went over to her kneeling down to see if she was okay as she sat up and covered her eye.
He tried to pull her hand away so he could see her eye.
"I'm alright Dean, honest, it doesn't hurt that much" she said as she kept rubbing her eye.
Then Dean helped her up to her feet.
"You know I just want to get out of here right now" Ava said still rubbing her eye.
"Yeah, me too, don't like too much of the stink in here" Dean said.
"Ah, next time sweetie stay out of men's fight and you, if you can't take the heat stay out of the kitchen" the drunk guy now said to Dean.
Once again Dean was fuming red and just had all he could take from this douchebag who first insults his woman and ruins their fun, but he then hits Ava and now is still being a piece of garbage about it. Dean just wanted to teach this guy a lesson once and for all, so he turned around and lunged towards the guy.
"Dean, no!" Ava yelled but Dean didn't listen he went straight to the guy and laid a huge number of haymakers at the guy beating up quite badly despite the guy being more than twice Dean's size but then again, he's fought against bigger men in the past.
Dean wouldn't stop until Ava grabbed him from behind and pulled him off yelling for him to stop.
"Dean please, that's enough he's not worth it, okay, he's not worth it!" she cried out as she was finally able to get Dean to stop and calm down, coming to his senses.
Dean just turned to Ava still in enraged at what that dick did to her and looked at her left eye that was almost swollen now and would leave a mark soon. Dean felt so guilty that once again their day was ruined all because of some outsider, it felt like they were cursed.
"Dean, I just want to get out of here okay, please" Ava begged, and Dean just nodded his head as he touched her face near her bruised eye.
"I'm so sorry Ava, about all of this" he told her apologetically.
"It's okay, Dean, let's just get out of this place now before we wind up at the police station again only this time, we're the ones in handcuffs okay" Ava told him in a soothing voice.
"Whatever you say darling" Dean told her and soon they were heading out of that place having forgotten all about that drunk who was by then being restrained by a couple of guys in then bar who were fussing at him for causing trouble again.
Dean and Ava headed for the van and drove off until they found a nice spot in the woods where nobody would bother them. By this time Ava had a nice shiner on her left eye and Dean still couldn't help feel bad looking at it being reminded that some huge dick slugged his woman and although Ava could defend herself and kick ass in a fight, he still felt the need to protect her and defend her honor it just in his nature.
"You're sure your good Ava?" he asked her, a bit concerned.
"Yeah, I'm mean this shiner is nothing, I had them in the past on more than one occasion it's just a bit sore now, I'll live" she said as she kept rubbing her left eye a bit.
"Still feel bad about how everything turned out and what happened to you, I swear I wanted to kill that scum" Dean said feeling angry again.
"Well, you held your own with that creep anyway and really kicked his ass" Ava said smiling trying to cheer him up.
Dean smiled back. "Yeah, that was one good thing out of all of this, and I wish I got to do more" he told her.
"Well, you're my hero, I mean even though did enough defended my honor, and even though I was a bit scared there for a minute that you wouldn't have murdered the guy, I have to admit I was bit turned on that you were really nail that creep for me" she told him.
"You were turned on hah" Dean said still grinning and she was grinning right back. "Well, are you still a bit turned on?" he asked her.
"I might" Ava replied slyly.
"Then, maybe we can do something about that" Dean said in a sly tone as he and Ava got up from their seat and he had their arms wrapped around each other.
"Yeah, I mean our Valentine's doesn't have to be completely ruined" she replied also feeling a bit frisky and before they knew it, they started making out and then laid down on the bed nearby and soon within minutes, they were out their clothes making love under the sheets.
Later that day, when they had put their clothes on after their tryst, they both felt a bit better about the day. However, Ava still was a bit bothered about something and Dean could see it.
"Hey, you're still upset about today, I thought what happened there made up for that" he told her.
"And I'm not complaining about that, it's just that well, I know it's not your fault about today and everything but I kind of still wished we had done something really special you know" she told him.
"Special? I mean this whole road trip was supposed to be something special and I feel bad that things didn't turn out the way we wanted" Dean said.
"Yeah, I know that Dean, but I still can't help long for something really romantic nice candlelit dinner at a nice restaurant, and I know that might sound so conventional but being wined and dined in such a way has always been special to me" she told him.
"Oh" Dean replied as if he was feeling like he let her down.
"Hey, I'm not trying to make you feel bad or anything it just that I even brought a nice dress with me because I thought you would take me there as a surprise and all, look I understand if you didn't" she told him, but Dean cut her off.
"Who said I didn't" he finished.
"What?" she asked.
"After everything else that's gone wrong today, if you want a nice romantic dinner at a restaurant then that's what you should have" he said.
"Really Dean just like that?" she replied.
"Yeah, in fact you're right that it was going to be a surprise taking you somewhere for a nice dinner we can just look around to find such a place that's all" he said.
"Oh, Dean thanks I'm so happy and I mean everything else may have gone bad but not this, at least we get to have a nice Valentine's Day dinner" she said excitedly as she wraps her arm around Dean who hugged her right back.
By that evening, after driving around in town had found a nice place to have their Valentine's Day dinner and they both changed for their date. Dean only changed his shirt, wearing something less casual while Ava changed into a nice long-sleeved red knee-length dress with long v shaped neckline that showed a bit of her cleavage. She also had her now dried hair worn down with earrings and had dolled herself up with makeup and looked strikingly beautiful despite the black eye. Dean was always amazed when she was dressed up so nice looking radiant that he felt like a teenager going on his first date with the most beautiful girl in the class.
"Wow, you're really hot Ava" Dean told her with a glowing look on his face.
"Thanks, you don't look half bad yourself" she told him as he blushed a little.
"Anyway, what's this place again?" she asked him.
"You'll see" was all that he told her.
They eventually drove to the restaurant and from the outside, it looked like a typical nice restaurant, the kind you go to for a nice dinner date. Ava was now wearing a long brown coat over her dress since it was kind of chilly outside and Dean had on a nice winter jacket. Dean did the gentleman thing and opened the van door from the passenger side and helped Ava out. Then, once they walked to the main entrance doors, Dean reached out and opened the door for Ava and let her enter first. The restaurant was a bit crowded with other couples who were out celebrating Valentine's too. They managed to find an empty table in the back area. Dean, in a gentlemanly manner, helped Ava out of her coat and placed it on the arm of the chair then let her sit down first before he sat down. After waiting for about nearly ten minutes, a waitress came over to take their order. Dean let Ava order first and then ordered his meal as the waitress wrote in all down and left leaving them with a glass of water while they wait for their dinner.
"Oh, Dean despite everything else not turning out so good, I'm glad we got at least have our Valentine's dinner" she said.
"Me too" Dean replied relieved everything had gone well.
"Just know nothing to go wrong now, this all seems so perfect" Ava told him.
"I'm glad Ava, that I was able to make something perfect for you afterall" Dean told her.
"You know none of this was your fault, I guess we just had a couple misfortunes, you know like on those days" she said.
Dean just sighed a bit, "I guess" he said.
"Anyway at least our luck has changed now, we're in this cozy restaurant and this feels really romantic, all we need now is candles burning to make it perfect, but I'll take what I can get" Ava said trying to lighten the mood even more.
Dean just nodded his head. "I don't care how perfect it is really as long as I get to spend it with you" he told her.
Ava just had a touched look on her face. "Same here" she replied as the two touched each other's hands.
Time passed on as they continued to wait for their meal, chatting with each other and joking and laughing to pass the time and soon it was over fifteen minutes, and they were still waiting to be served. The couple had drank their water and just sat patiently. Just then Ava started to smell something peculiar.
"Hey, Dean do you smell anything?" she asked him.
Dean started sniffing the air and too noticed the smell. "Yeah, it smells something like smoke, hmm, I wonder if they burnt something in the kitchen" he said.
"Hopefully it isn't our dinner" said Ava sarcastically.
However, nearly another five minutes had passed, and they still were waiting for the meal and continued to notice the smell and it was getting worse. It definitely smelled like smoke; worse it smelled like something was burning. Then they looked about and noticed smoke for the first time as did the other customers who were all looking about and talking about the smell and the smoke. Dean and Ava saw that there was smoke in the room although they had no idea where the smoke was coming from, but the smoke was getting bigger and bigger each minute and then they heard the sound of something burning and instantly knew what was happening.
"Oh my god Dean, I think this place is on fire!" Ava cried out.
Before Dean had a chance to answer her, they heard some of the staff come out screaming to the customers.
"Fire, fire, hurray everybody we all must get out now!" cried the manager at the top of her lungs with some of the staff following also screaming fire.
With that, the customers quickly got up and some screaming started running, heading for the main entrance doors in a panic. Some were even pushing others out of the way as they went out the side doors of the restaurant. Dean and Ava quickly got up as Ava grabbed her coat and purse and Dean took her arm and led her out.
"Quickly Ava, we got to get out of here" he cried out.
As they walked fast with the other crowd to the main entrance.
"Gee, I spoke way too soon about nothing else going wrong" Ava said as they followed the crowd to the main entrance doors.
"Yeah, well let's bitch about that once we're outside" Dean told her. It took a while for them to get outside because there was a crowd of customers already ahead of them after enough squeezing and trying to get through, they managed to make their way outside.
They were now on the sidewalk but away from the restaurant as they stood there and watched it burn on fire now and a few minutes later heard sirens and then saw a fireman's truck drive up. Some of the other customers also stood around and watched the whole thing while others had already made it to their cars and took off. Some of the staff who were also outside among the customers started talking to the firefighters once they arrived.
"Son a Bitch, just our luck that place goes ablaze just before we were about to have our dinner!" Dean cried out.
"Yeah, I know, our Valentine's dinner is once again ruined" Ava said with a sad look on her face.
Dean turned to her feeling bad that once again their romantic date was spoiled.
"Look, Ava I'm sorry, I swear I didn't know this was going to happen" he said as he places his hand on her shoulder.
"Again, it's not your fault, I guess we're just cursed somewhere" Ava replied.
"I wouldn't go that far" Dean said.
"Yeah, what can it be? I mean it just seems no matter what, our Valentine's gets spoiled by something, I mean nothing ended up right today, now this. For some reason, we're not allowed spend our first Valentine's Day together without something going wrong; fate isn't letting us" Ava said as she looked like she was about to cry, and she struggled to withhold her tears.
"I don't buy that all" Dean said trying to reassure her.
"Well, I do" Ava fired as she quickly turned to face Dean and tears were already sliding down her face.
"I mean just look at what all that happened today. We fell through the ice while ice fishing and lost the fish I caught. The brawl at the bar leaving me with this shiner" she said pointing to her left eye. "And now tonight, we didn't even get a chance to be served our dinner when the whole place sets on fire, I mean it couldn't be anymore obviously, that were are just doomed to have a Valentine's Day romantic day together, I mean I know it sounds foolish and all after, but I really wanted to be special for us, there is just something special about this day, a tradition of romance, and being able to express for just one whole day, it was always special for my parents who always either went out together or stayed in with a romantic candlelit dinner and playing nice music, usually their favorite romantic song or even go away for the weekend" she continued.
She then just broke down and cried at that moment as she just wished she had something that special with Dean especial on their first Valentine's Day together but now it seemed no matter what everything ends up getting ruined and now the whole day has been ruined for her and she knows there's nothing else for her to do but cry no matter how childish that seemed. Dean just stood there feeling helpless then he took Ava into his arms.
"Hey, you know it doesn't matter to me, just spending the day with you is all that I give a damn about, forget anything else, I could go for a pizza right now as long as spent this whole day with you. We really don't need big romantic gestures to know how much we feel about each other, I know I don't" he told her trying to cheer her up.
Ava pulled away a bit and stopped crying and just looked at Dean defeated.
"Right now, the only thing I want is to just head back to the van and call it a day" she told him.
"What about dinner?" Dean asked her.
"We can just pick something up at a fast-food place or something like that just get me outta here" she told him sadly.
Dean still felt back about everything but didn't know what else to do. The night had pretty much been ruined and Ava wasn't in the mood to celebrate the holiday, and he had to admit a part of him felt the same way. So, he just nodded his head and agreed.
"Okay, Ava let's just blow this place before something else happens like an earthquake" he said half-jokingly.
"After today I wouldn't be surprised" Ava said.
The two then just got into the van and drove off as the restaurant continued to burn and the firefighters attempted to put out the fire while a crowd just watched. They drove to Taco Bell and got some burritos for dinner which they ordered to go. Then they took their dinner and headed back to the van parked somewhere in the woods. However, just when they got settled, Dean decided to give Ava another surprise despite her not being in the mood and after enough persuasion she gave in and Dean had her wait outside the van for about ten minutes and was getting impatient.
"Dean, I'm getting chilly out here how long now?" she cried out.
"I'm almost finished now" he said and then a couple minutes later he came out of the van to let her know she could come back inside but made her close her eyes first as he led her inside.
"Dean this is silly; I don't know what you got planned but I said before I'm not in the mood for a…" but Dean cut her off.
"You can open your eyes now" he told her. Ava opened her eyes to notice that on the table two candles that were lit with the two plates set each with their dinner that they ordered, and two wine glasses filled with beer. The table was covered in rose petals and nearby was a CD player plugged in the socket. Ava just looked stunned at what she saw. "What's all this?" she asked him.
"Why, this is our romantic Valentine's Day dinner that you wanted" he said.
Ava still looked surprised. "Dean, where did you get all of this, the candles and the rose petals, I mean?" she asked, still taken aback.
"I always planned on us having a nice candlelit dinner right here I the van, then you said you wanted to go out to a restaurant so, I decided to take you there instead but when that didn't go well, I just reverted back to my original plan and give your this nice dinner, I mean after everything that didn't go well for us today, I think this is one thing that can be successful. I mean this may not be a fancy restaurant, but this is romantic as I can get dear, I just hope you still want it despite things being ruined today" he told her.
Ava just looked touched, but Dean's romantic gesture and her disappointment seemed to disappear right there and then since the next thing she went over to Dean and just gave him a nice passionate kiss and embrace as he kissed and hugged her back. After she stopped kissing him, she continued to have her arms wrapped around his neck holding him.
"Ah, Dean is really nice and romantic, I must say I'm quite impressed" she told him.
"I hope so darling, took me a lot of trouble to find some of this, I mean Charlie helped the rose petals were her idea" he said with his arms still wrapped around her waist.
"Well, I will happily thank her once we get back" she said and just kissed him again.
"You know, I'm so sorry being such a pain about everything today, I just wanted our day to be perfect and when it didn't turn out that way I just fell apart, but I will say right now this is the best Valentine's gift you can give me" she told him after they finished kissing.
"I'm happy to give for you that but right I think we better eat before our dinner gets cold plus I'm starving like hell" he told her.
She laughed a little then they let each other go and sat down to enjoy their meal. They gobbled their burritos as they were quite hungry and gulped their drink from the wine glasses which was beer. Then after they finished their meal, Dean turned on the CD player which was playing Ava's favorite love song.
"The night isn't over yet," he said as stood over here and reached out his hand.
With that, Ava grabbed his hand, and he pulled her up from the table and soon they were slow dancing to the romantic song holding each other so close. Soon the song was over, and the next song played but they didn't care, they were still just holding each other dancing the night away.
"Happy Valentine's Day Dean" was all Ava said.
"Back at you, Happy Valentine's Ava" Dean replied as they just kept dancing in the van in the middle of the woods it the chilly night.
