Chapter 33 Another Winchester Valentine's Day Part 1
Sam drove for hours in his car to Minnesota and it seemed to be forever as he stopped a few times, to use the restroom at a gas station, or to eat lunch at a diner. He finally arrived in St. Paul late in the afternoon and when he knocked at the door, Gwen greeted him so happily to see him. She was looking quite nicely dressed in a white long-sleeve crochet knit sweater with a white t-shirt underneath and blue jeans. Her hair was nicely styled as if she had been to the hair salon recently. She was also wearing red lipstick that matched her polished nails. He also noticed she was wearing perfume that had a nice smell that he liked. When she saw him, she greeted him at the door with a nice hug and a kiss as they embraced each other, not caring who saw them before rushing him inside the house. After walking into the living room, Madame Bess who had been sitting on the couch gets up and greets him too with a warm motherly hug. She also looked nice in her green turtleneck ribbed sweater and matching pants and donned a new hairdo.
"Ma'am, you look great" Sam couldn't help but notice and compliment her.
"Thank you, well, Gwen insisted I get my hair done to when she made her appointment yesterday, and I have to admi I still got it, when a friendly old gentleman actually flirted with me after we left the place, wished I got I chance to flirt back but Gwen here rushed me away to do some shopping" she told him petting her hair.
"Grandmom" Gwen cried out looking a bit embarrassed.
"Well, it's true, you're not the only one here that can attract a man" she said teasingly as Gwen continued to look embarrassed and Sam just stood there quite amused. "Anyway, it's so nice to have you here and Gwen will help you get settled take your coat and all" she told him.
Gwen helped Sam out of his coat and took his hat and scarf and took them upstairs to hang in her bedroom closet while Sam took his luggage and followed Gwen to her room and after putting everything away, they headed back downstairs in the living room and sat down on the couch as the three of them decided to catch up on each other's lives. They talked for about a half an hour and then Gwen lured Sam back upstairs to her room to get some rest since he was quite tired from the long drive and Gwen had the day planned for them. He laid down on the bed and rested for about an hour and Gwen gave him some privacy. Then about 4:00, Gwen came back in and shook Sam awake as it was time for their Valentine's Day outing and after nearly dragging Sam out of bed, she finally told him about the surprise she had. She went over to her closet and took out two pairs of ice-skating shoes and showed them to him as Sam just looked on perplexed.
"You're kidding me, ice skating?" he told her. Gwen nodded her head eagerly.
"Yes, this is our surprise, I always dreamed of us going ice skating together and in this city, we have outdoor ice skating, which would make it even more fun" she said.
Sam just sighed still in disbelief as it was not what he was expecting.
"Gwen, I hate to break it to you, but I don't know how to ice skate, I never been ice skating in my life" he told her.
"That's okay, you don't have to enjoy it, plenty of the people who go ice skating aren't really good at it, all that matters is we have fun; besides, I can teach you, just like I taught you have to waltz, remember" Gwen said.
"Gwen, ice skating is a lot different than the waltz, I mean, I'm not sure I can handle falling flat on my face every five seconds" he said.
Gwen just sighed still looking all excited. "Sam, you won't fall flat on your face at least not every five seconds that is" she said jokingly.
"Oh, great" Sam said rolling his eyes.
"I promise you Sam, it will be fun, and you will enjoy yourself once you got the hang of it, and if you feel like you're going to fall just lean on me, I'll be right next to you showing you all the ropes, think of me as your instructor and you my pupil" she told him.
Sam still seemed hesitant. "I don't know about all of this Gwen; ice skating really isn't my thing" he told her.
"All the more reason to try something new, I mean, when I come down there to visit you, you can teach me everything you know about fishing but please, Sam I really planned this out and thought this would be a fun thing to do together and I promise you, you won't be disappointed" she told him giving him the puppy dog eyes look which she learned from him.
Sam just sighed again as he was hesitant about this idea, but looking into Gwen's puppy dog eyes, he just couldn't say no.
"Damn, she got those puppy dog eyes look from me" he thought to himself.
Finally, giving a defeated look, he nodded his head and said, "Okay Gwen, I'll give it a shot, but if I don't like it after this, you won't ever hound me to do it again, okay" he said.
"That's deal, but I promise you won't be sorry" Gwen replied excitedly.
"I hope not," said Sam.
"Also, you will need bring a nice dress shirt and pants to change into later" Gwen told him as she put down the ice skates.
"What, what for?" Sam asked.
"That's for later this evening when we go out for dinner" Gwen said.
"But why bring them to the skating rink, I just assume we go someplace simple" said replied.
"The place I have in mind requires we dress up a bit more nicely so we will have to change after our time at the rink" Gwen told him.
"Why can't we just return here and change before, if that's the case?" Sam asked her.
"Because it's much easier if we change there rather than drive all the way back here to change, it saves so much time" she said.
"But where do we change, it's not like this place as a dressing room" Sam replied.
"We can just change in the public restrooms, I've recalled other people of changed in the restrooms when I went the ice rink and it will be no big deal, okay" Gwen reassured him.
Sam just gave in once again as he didn't want to debate with her. "Okay, I guess" he told her.
"Perfect, just put the clothes you're going to change your duffel bag as well as your ice skates and I'll do the same" she said.
Later, after everything they needed, they put on their coats, hats, gloves and scarves, and carrying their duffel bags, headed downstairs. Madame Bess was in the kitchen cleaning up a bit but when she heard coming down the stairs and she headed to the hall area to greet them.
"Oh, I see you two are all set then?" she replied.
"Yes grandmom, me and Sam are going ice skating downtown" she told her.
"Really, ice skating, it's been I don't know how long since you've been ice skating, Sam do you even know how to ice skate?" she asked him.
Sam just shook his head. "No ma'am, I've never done this before, but your granddaughter insists I try it out this once or I'll never hear the end of it" he said.
"Yeah, well that's my Gwen, she can be quite persuasive when she really wants something and won't let it go until you surrender, I know after years of experience with it," said Madame Bess.
Gwen just rolled her eyes. "Oh, grandmom" she replied as her grandmother just laughed.
"Well, anyway, after skating, Sam and I are going out to dinner at a restaurant and we won't stop to change here instead we'll change at the skating rink in the restrooms, so we won't be back until late this night" Gwen told her.
Madame Bess didn't seem at all phased at all about it as if she was expecting it. "Well, I figure you got plans tonight, that's why I'm only fixing myself some leftovers," she said.
"Kind of feel bad leaving you all alone for hours in this house" Sam replied.
"Oh, don't worry about me, I kind of like having the place to myself for a while every now and then and I've already had plans anyway. I'm going to watch a couple of mystery movies on the DVDs while I'm just relaxing in the living room and maybe have some popcorn after dinner while I'm watching the movies, I'll have a great time so don't worry about me, just go out and have fun like young people do".
"That we'll do. Anyway, goodbye grandmom, take care" said Gwen as she and Sam prepared to leave.
"Yeah, bye ma'am and don't worry we won't stay out too long" he told her.
"Bye young love birds, have fun" Madame Bess said as she walked them to the front door and soon, they both left the house as he closed the door behind her.
Then they headed to his car as Sam insisted on driving her despite not knowing where the ice-skating rink was, but Gwen offered to be his guide giving him directions. Soon they were in the car with Sam opening the door for Gwen then getting in himself and they were off. It didn't take them too long to get to their destination with Gwen giving him directions the whole time. They finally arrived at the place in Downtown St. Paul where they saw it was an outdoor ice-skating rink and people were all already skating around the frozen ground while others were sitting around on benches watching or taking photos on their phones. It was diverse group of adults, kids, senior citizens, couples and they all appeared to be having fun.
"You didn't tell me this outdoor skating rink" Sam said turning to Gwen.
"Does it matter, we'll still be skating on the ice. Besides, I always loved going to the outdoor skating rink as a little girl. There was something more special about them and during the evenings, they even seemed more romantic, skating around outside feeling the fresh cool and frosty air being surrounded by white snow" replied.
"Wow, you have a knack of making even the simple things sound more beautiful" Sam told her.
"Well, that's one of my many talents" Gwen said seeming pleased with herself.
"I know, that's one of the things I love about you" Sam told her, and Gwen just looked touched.
"Okay, enough of the sentimental stuff, time to have fun, I can't wait to get on the ice" Gwen said excitedly.
"Yeah, I can hardly wait" Sam said in a sarcastic tone looking like he still wasn't too thrilled on what they were about to do.
"Hey, don't worry Sam, I promise you, you will have fun, more fun than you ever thought you would" Gwen said.
"I hope so" Sam said feeling unsure.
The two turned around and got their duffel bags from the backseat and pulled out their ice skates then placed them into a back sack they brought with them, and they got out of the car as Sam carried the back sack. They headed to the skating rink and sat down on one of the benches as they both took out the skates and changed into them, then placed their shoes into the back sack. Not wanting to leave the back sack behind, Sam just decided to carry the backpack on his back. As they got up, Sam took Gwen's hand as they slowly walked to where the ice was as he struggled to maintain his balance with Gwen helping him along the way as it was much easier for her to do. In no time, they were on the ice where the other people were happily ice skating as Sam clung tight to Gwen's hand still struggling not to fall. Gwen also struggled to hold on to Sam to make sure he didn't fall but she nearly failed a couple of times herself.
"Okay, Sam, I'm going to show you how to ice skate it's not as hard as it seems, we just have to take things real slow" she said.
"Hey, do I have a choice right now" said Sam feeling a bit awkward.
Then Gwen guided near the edge of the ice and then just slowly showed Sam beginner's steps how to ice skate. "All you have to is go like this" she said then she demonstrated as she slowly started gliding on the ice taking simple steps.
She then turned around and continued with her steps and then glided over to where Sam was. "Okay, now you try, and I will do this with you" she said as she reached for Sam's hand.
Sam just gave her his hand and holding her with a firm grip, they soon both started gliding on ice as Sam did his best to copy Gwen's moves and she was right, this part was easy.
"Okay, now we will go a little faster now" she said.
Then they both started gliding a bit faster and Sam seemed to be doing well as he kept holding a tight grip on her hand and seemed to believe he was getting the hang of it.
"Hey, you're right Gwen, this isn't so hard afterall, I'm doing it" he told her.
They continued to glide around the ice not caring who sees them or not but then it appeared they were about to bump into a little girl who was ice skating with her mother and suddenly Sam tried to stop and before they knew it, they both ended up falling down on ground on their backs. They both sat up from the ice not appearing hurt at all, just a bit sore.
"Oh, Sam are you okay?" Gwen asked Sam who looked like he got the wind knocked out of him.
"Yeah, I'm fine but how about you, you are not hurt are you?" he asked her.
"No, I've fallen down before, it' no big deal" she said laughing a bit.
Sam laughed a bit too. "I'm sorry that was totally my fault" he told her.
"No, maybe I was expecting too much too soon, next time we will go slower" she told him.
The little girl they nearly ran into just skated off with her mother who had grabbed her hand and pulled her away. Sam got up and then helped Gwen off the ice and they decided to presume skating. Gwen continued to show Sam how to skate gliding with him going slow for now. Sam would get the hang of it but whenever they went a bit too fast, they both end up falling to the ground. This happened at least a few more times and they just end up on the ground lying on the ice laughing like a couple of kids.
"Gwen, Gwen is that you?" said a voice said.
As both Sam and Gwen looked up, they saw a blonde-haired middle-aged woman standing nearby them with a grayish haired middle-aged man standing right next to her.
"Mrs. Hutton?" Gwen replied as she got up off the ground and helped Sam to his feet too.
"Hello there Gwen, it's been a long time since I say, just didn't expect to run into you here" she replied.
"Hello yourself, Mrs. Hutton, I didn't expect that you hang out to here either" Gwen said.
"Oh, I've been out here a few times ever since I began taking ice skating lessons" Mrs. Hutton told her.
"You took ice skating lessons?" Gwen asked looking quite surprised.
"Don't be so shocked, I may be bit older than most who start taking lessons, but is never took late to try new things, am I'm right dear" she replied turning to the man next to her.
"Sure are" he replied smiling.
Then she turned back to Gwen. "How's your grandmother by the way?" she asked.
"She's doing fine, business as usual you know" Gwen said.
"Good, well tell her once again thanks for everything, she's helped my life out a lot," said Mrs. Hutton.
"Sure thing" Gwen replied.
Just then Sam coughed trying to get Gwen's attention. Gwen looked a bit embarrassed when she realized she had almost forgotten Sam was standing there, and she had not introduced him.
"Oh, I'm sorry, Sam, this is Mrs. Hutton, Mrs. Carol Hutton, she was a client of my grandmom whom she helped in the past, and Mrs. Hutton this is Sam, my boyfriend" Gwen said introducing them to each other.
"Nice meeting you Sam" said Mrs. Hutton with a friendly smile.
"You too ma'am" Sam replied back.
Then Mrs. Hutton quickly turned to the man standing next to her. "Oh, and this is Gerry, my boyfriend" she said taking Gerry's hand as she looked proud of the fact while the two gave loving looks at each other.
"Nice to meet you" Gwen said.
"Same here" said Gerry as he gave both Sam and Gwen a friendly nod.
"We decided to celebrate our very first Valentine's Day together here, it's a bit unconventional but we thought there is something romantic and fun about ice skating outdoors on Valentine's Day" she said as she continued to hold Gerry's hand looking like a lovestruck teenager.
"That's what I always thought and me and Sam are also celebrating our first Valentine's Day together" Gwen replied as she glanced briefly at Sam who just smiled back at her.
"Well, I'll let you two lovebirds get back to enjoying yourselves and we will get back to our time together," said Mrs. Hutton as she glanced at Gerry again smiling.
"Well, it was nice seeing you again Mrs. Hutton and hope you and your fellow have a happy Valentine's Day," said Gwen.
"Same goes for you and Sam there and say hello to your grandmother for me, and that I said thanks once again," said Mrs. Hutton.
"Will do, bye Mrs. Hutton," said Gwen.
"Goodbye Gwen nice meeting you Sam," said Mrs. Hutton.
"You too ma'am" Sam replied who had been silent most of this time.
Then Mrs. Hutton glanced at Gerry and said, "Come on hun, got more tricks to show you" she said and the two skating off together holding hands smiling like two people in love waving back to Gwen and Sam who waved back to them.
Gwen and Sam continued to watch them skate to the other side holding hands gliding together and laughing. Then they glanced at each other and started to laugh.
"Wow, I never expected to see her here that's for sure" Gwen said.
"So, who exactly is she and how is she a client of your grandmother's?" Sam asked curiously.
"Yes, almost three years ago, Mrs. Hutton came to my grandmom for help claiming she was being haunted by her dead husband as she would see his spirit in her house almost everywhere. She just wanted help making him cross over and move on, so she could have some peace" Gwen said.
"Wow, that sounds like of sad, and your grandmom was able to help I assume?" Sam asked.
Gwen nodded. "Yes, we would go over to her house and grandmom would talk to his spirit and both she and Mrs. Hutton were able to get him to finally let go as like with most spirits, they usually stick around and don't cross over is because, there is something or someone that is keeping them from letting go" Gwen said.
"That must have really been hard for Mrs. Hutton" Sam replied.
"It was especially in Mrs. Hutton's case since her husband was a real bastard according to her who made her life miserable while he was still alive in their marriage and was making her even more miserable in death. She just wanted to be free of him" Gwen said.
"That sounds terrible, how did your grandmother manage to get rid of him?" Sam asked her.
"It wasn't easy, and it took a while, but grandmom and Mrs. Hutton got him to see that if he continued to remain, he would also be miserable as he was when he was alive and for him to finally have peace, he needed to let go, and it finally worked" Gwen told him.
"Well, glad it turned out good for Mrs. Hutton" Sam replied.
"She is too, I guess now that he's gone, she was able be happy again and even found someone new, she deserves it anyway" Gwen said.
"Well, that's good for her and now what about us, now that they gotten back to their time together, I think we should do the same," said Sam.
"I couldn't agree more," said Gwen.
The two of them continued with their ice skating with Gwen still showing Sam how to skate, they glided around slowly all around the ice in circles for a while and as the time passed Sam started to get the hang of it. A couple hours later, Sam was doing a bit better, and he and Gwen even spun around holding on to each other although they winded up falling again but, they just got up laughing and enjoying themselves. The day continued to pass on and in no time, it was dark outside as the evening arrived. Some of the people had already left, including Mrs. Hutton and her boyfriend, while Sam and Gwen lost track of time as they were so busy having fun on the ice rink.
Sam had to admit that Gwen was right, he did enjoy ice skating even though he wasn't that good at it. In fact, he enjoyed it far more than he expected, especially with Gwen right there with him. Then Gwen looked at her watch and realized how late it was.
"Oh my, it's after seven, we need to get going if we are going out for dinner" she told him.
"Wow, I didn't realize how much time flied" Sam said.
"Well, now we need to get out of these skates and change into what we're wearing for dinner" she told him.
They both walked off the ice and were back on the bench where the back sack was and opened it taking out their shoes. Then they pulled off their skates and placed them in the backpack and then put their shoes back on. Sam then carried the back sack as they headed to the car where he placed in the back seat. Then they pulled out their duffel bags also in the back seat containing the clothes they were going to change in. Gwen led Sam to the outdoor public restrooms and Sam entered one room and Gwen the other where they each took out their evening attire to wear for dinner and changed into them placing the clothes, they were wearing into the duffel bag. It didn't take Sam too long to do this since he only changed into a tan long-sleeved button-down shirt and brown dress pants with a belt and brown shoes before putting back on his coat, hat, scarf etc.
When he got out of the restroom, he was still waiting on Gwen feeling a bit impatient thinking how Dean is right, women always take so long to change. After what he felt was forever, Gwen finally came out, she was back in her long coat, hat, scarf, and gloves but he noticed something different about her. Her face was dolled up with makeup now which made her look even more beautiful than she already was and she had on some nice circle-shaped blue earrings. She also appeared to be wearing a dress under her coat with some brown tights and nice blue shoes. Whatever she was wearing under that coat, Sam was sure she was going to look great. He also smelled some more perfume on he as he always loved that scent of perfume she had.
"Wow, you look beautiful, I mean you always look beautiful but now she looked gorgeous" he told her.
"Thank you and I'm sure you won't look half bad yourself" she told him.
Sam just grinned. "That perfume, I always loved that on you" he told her.
"I know, that's why I use it" Gwen said with a grin.
Then she took him by the hand and led him away. "Come on, let's get dinner now" she told him.
"Great, I'm starved anyway" Sam said.
They both soon headed back to the car and put their duffel bags in the backseat as they got in the car prepared for their next destination which is their dinner date. They both had a great time that afternoon that a part of them didn't even want to leave. But another part of them was looking forward to their now dinner date hoping their evening together will be just as fun as their time at the ice rink and within seconds they drove off to their destination.
Update: Just wishing everybody a Happy New Year of 2023. I hope you all continue to read my fanfic and hope you enjoy them. Thank you all.
