Chapter 35 A New Case and An Old Friend

The next day, Sam and Gwen decided together to share the news of Gwen coming to live with Sam in the bunker and her moving in in the spring. Madame Bess didn't seem to surprised to what she heard and although at first, it was hard to tell what she was feeling, she let it be well known she was happy for Gwen and that she knew someday, she would find a man to want to spend her life with and think Sam is that right person.

However, later when it was just her and Gwen, she confessed that she hope that the right man would be someone that lived locally, but she is happy for Gwen just the same even if it means her travelling miles from her home to have a new home with him but she would miss her when she leaves and how it wouldn't be the same without her and Gwen reciprocate the sentiment as the two hugged it out. Sam remained at their house for another week leaving on a Saturday to return to the bunker. He gave his usual goodbye to Gwen and promised to see her soon and Madame Bess also gave him a hug and told him to look after her Gwen when the time comes, and he promised he would.

Sam returned home to the bunker where Dean and Ava were already back from their road trip. Both him, Dean and Ava shared details of their adventures comparing which was more exciting and Dean and Ava won hands down. They were all excited when he told them about asking Gwen to move in and how she accepted and Ava was thrilled to have her old gal friend around though she and Charlie got along fine, she just liked to idea of having an old friend around. Dean gave his full support along with Adam and Charlie despite that fact the place was getting crowded but there was plenty of room in the bunker that could hold over a dozen people if they wanted to. The next weekend, Sam returned again to visit Gwen on her birthday and bought her a nice book on the spiritual realm that he knew she would like as a gift. He stayed there after her birthday few more days before returning home.

As the days passed on, nothing out of the ordinary happened. The gang did the usual thing, Dean and Ava occasionally went out together or sometimes stayed in while everybody else went out or went to another part of the bunker giving them privacy. Sometimes the whole gang just hung out together with Castiel popping in occasionally. They all enjoyed their time they had when not on a case, where they could just hang out and do ordinary things and not worry about hunting ghosts or monsters and struggling to survive and it was more fun when Castiel showed up. The very first time Castiel did appear after the events that happened with Zadkiel, he told them something very important regarding his former comrade from purgatory who is now the new Death.

"Zadkiel contacted me and all the reapers to inform me something serious that will affect everybody not just you all but, on this planet," he told them real serious in the main room near the map table.

"He just contacted you just like that, can he do that?" Dean asked him.

Castiel just nodded. "Sure, as Death he can do anything and he contacted me to send me an important message" he told them.

"What kind of message would the new Death send you and his other little foot soldiers?" Dean asked as the others just listened on out of curiosity.

"Well, he wants to make it clear that now that he's taking over the role of Death, there will be some changes from now on" Castiel replied.

"Changes, so the new head honcho is changing the rules of the game of some sort?" Dean asked.

Castiel nodded. "Yes, something like that" he said.

"What are these changes and you said it affects all humans?" Sam asked.

"I'm getting to that. For one thing, reapers are not to interfere with humans anymore. From now on, their only role is to reap those who are meant to die and guide them to their destination, nothing more" he said.

"So, I guess that means no more going rogue" Dean replied.

"That is exactly what it means and the consequences of defying these rules is losing all their abilities rendering them powerless. They basically will become mortals and forced to live like them for the rest of their lives" Castiel said.

"Wow, looks like your old pal isn't messing around, no more breaking the rules or you're out of the club" Dean said in a sarcastic tone.

Castiel just nodded his head again. "Yes, and there is more that also includes me" he told them.

"You? What big rules does he have for you?" Sam asked.

"He had made it clear that I'm not to use my powers to resurrect any living being that has departed ever" Castiel told him.

"You mean you can't ever bring anybody back period?" Dean asked a bit taken back.

"Yes, that pretty much sums it up" Castiel said.

"Not ever?" Sam added.

Castiel shook his head. "No, not ever again as he's a firm believer in natural order and that means the dead remain dead, no exceptions" he said.

"What happens if you break if rules, will he make you lose your powers too?" Sam asked.

"That is precisely what will happen, the consequence will be that I will lose my grace and become a mortal just like before only this time it will be permanent" Castiel said.

"And he can do this?" Adam who had been silent this whole time along Charlie and Ava asked.

"As Death, he has the ability to do a lot of things including taking away my grace" Castiel answered.

"But what about God, I assumed you are directly under his jurisdiction, would he let this happen to you?" Dean asked.

"God won't interfere as he's giving all free will regarding such matters, besides Death is equally powerful as God, God doesn't have authority over him" Castiel said.

"Still, he would do that to you, being that your old friends and comrades and all?" asked Dean.

"I'm afraid he would as he doesn't believe in giving one special treatment as it should be. I don't expect him to make me an exception to the rules has laid out on others" said Castiel.

"Well, he really is laying down the law, not getting anybody a free pass" Dean said.

"Of course, this would also include all of you guys" Castiel said and both Sam and Dean had looks on their faces as they became truly aware of these new rules mean. "I love you all as you are practical my family, but this means I can't make any exceptions for any of you and risk losing my grace and my wings again as much as it pains me and believe me this is the hardest choice I have to make. But, when God restored my wings, I felt reborn and made it my mission to devote myself to God and anyone else in charge and make sure I was never in a position to lose any of my powers or my grace again, and I feel it's right" Castiel said looking kind of sad.

"Hey, we understand Cas, we don't want you to risk losing your grace or having your wings clipped so, of course we don't expect you to ever bend the rules for us no matter what the circumstance" Sam said.

Castiel just smiled in relief. "I appreciate that you guys, but I still feel terrible if the situation arises and I can't use my powers to help you, I know I would be tempted to break rules anyway since you are all practically my family but that is the burdens of being an angel, duty comes ahead of love but I hate the idea of the day coming when death awaits any of you all and I'm powerless to fix it" he told them looking a bit sad again.

"Hey, Cas, like I said before, we understand. We don't want to put you in that unfair situation" Dean said.

"Yeah, in fact, a while back me and Dean made our own pact that if one of us goes, the other won't do anything to bring the that that person back since it always comes at a price. We decided no matter how painful and how tempting it is to save the other at any cost, we will just let the other go" Sam finished.

"Yeah, Zadkiel is right, the dead should just remain dead, we can't afford to keep being selfish, it's cost us a lot in our family already" Dean added.

"I'm with Dean and Sam on that too, no matter how much it hurts us to lose anybody we love, we should do anything that comes at a dangerous price to ease our own pain" Ava also chimed in.

Castiel smiled feeling both touched and sad at the same time. "That means a lot although it doesn't make me feel any better of losing any one you" he told them.

"None of us likes the idea of losing any one of us, but that is a part of life, that there is that one day that our time will come up but we don't just dwell on that we just live our life and I know in the past we have been used to either dying and coming back or seeing those who are close to us die and only to come back to us" Dean said glancing at both Adam then Charlie before continuing, "but we will have to live with that we don't expect to be treated differently" he finished.

"Hey, enough talking about all this depressing dying stuff, we need to do something to lighten the mood" Adam who had being quiet all this time said.

"What do you have in mind little brother?" Sam replied.

"Hey how about a game of cards" he said.

"That's sounds alright by me, and Cas you can join in too, we taught you everything you know about poker" Dean said.

"I would like that" said Castiel. "I'm playing too," said Ava.

"And me" Charlie added.

"We wouldn't dream of leaving you girls out" Dean said.

"Besides, it would be an easy win for us" Adam added sarcastically.

"Hey, we girls could beat you guys any day of the week" Ava said.

"You wanna make a bet on that one" Dean said.

"Yeah, we do," said Charlie.

"Fine, if any of us guys win, you girls will have to cook, clean and do all the laundry for a week and if any one of you two win, then we guys will do it" Dean said.

"Okay, that's a deal and be prepared to be doing our laundry and cooking our meals" Ava replied with Charlie bump fisting her for their girl power moment.

Soon they all started playing poker and Castiel joined with them as he already knew how to play because Dean had taught him everything he knew some years back and he became good at it. In time, they were all having fun the women against the men and the women proved to be quite the challenging opponents since Ava was just as good as the guys in poker followed by Charlie. However, in the end neither of them won and it would be a tie. They weren't about to do a rematch since they had played for hours now and were getting quite drained from the game and decided since nobody really won, then the deal was off. Instead, it would be just as usual which had them divide the chores.

Ava usually cooked since she was good at it better than the rest of them and cleaned up afterwards. Charlie took care of the laundry since the Ava cooked, the guys cleaned up with Adam sweeping the floor and Sam and Dean usually took care of the dishes one washed while the other dried, this set up had been Ava's idea when she moved in since she felt everybody should pitch in and it became a regular arrangement for them since. Once Gwen moves in with them Ava insists she could help her with the cooking and Charlie wanted her to take over the ironing of the clothes so they would have extra help.

The weeks passed and soon it was Gwen's 28th birthday and Sam decided to drive up to St. Paul to help celebrate it. Sam and Gwen spent the day together and then later that evening, he, Gwen and Madame Bess all went out celebrate her birthday with a nice dinner at a restaurant followed by a birthday cake with the waiting staff singing Happy Birthday as they brought in the cake. Gwen blew out her candles after making a wish and they all enjoyed the birthday cake. Afterwards, Gwen opened up her present that Sam gave her which was a bookmark with the initials G.N. which stood for her name Gwen Niles. Gwen was so grateful for the present and the three of them continued to enjoy their dinner together. Sam would stay over a week afterwards before getting a call home for their latest case that involved a strange case of children killing their parents for no apparent reason out in Nevada.

The days continued to go by into weeks then one day on a Friday close to Mid-March, The Winchesters got a call from Madame Bess that seemed urgent.

"Hello guys, Gwen and I need your help right away" she told them.

"What's happening?" asked Dean as he and Sam were listening on his phone with the speaker on so all everybody could hear.

"You see, me and Gwen are in St. Louis for a psychic convention" she explained.

"A psychic convention, I mean is there such a thing?" Dean asked curiously.

"Yes there is and I'll explain about it later but anyway, when we got here, we ran into an old acquaintance of ours and it is also somebody you know to from way back" Madame Bess said.

"Oh, who is it?" Sam asked curiously this time.

"It's your old friend Missouri Moseley" cried out Madame Bess.

Both Dean and Sam's eyes lit up at the mention of that name that they hadn't heard in years. In fact it had been almost ten years ago since the last time they ever saw Missouri Moseley way back when she helped them with a case involving their old home where a single mother with two kids lived. She had been a medium and an old acquaintance of their dad but she unfortunately couldn't help them locate him back when he was still missing. Hearing her name after all these years made them both shocked and curious they never thought that they would encounter her again but anything is possible and always wondered what she was doing now.

"You're serious?" Dean cried out still surprised.

"Missouri Moseley?" Sam finished still processing all of this.

"Yes, and she remembers you guys too" Madame Bess.

"But you sounded like this was urgent" Dean cried out.

"It is, you see Missouri, she didn't just appear for this convention. It turns out that St. Louis is her hometown and she returned there to look after her sick aunt who raised her and started doing her business there. When we ran into each other at the convention, since we had worked together in the past she asked me and Gwen to help her with her latest case, so we decided to stay a bit longer" said Madame Bess.

"What is this case?" Sam asked.

"Well, it involves an old abandoned Victorian house that was recently been purchased by a new couple who moved to the city and had it renovated and all. After they moved in, they had been haunted by a disturbing presence that had been frightening them to the point they contacted Missouri to find out what was going on" Madame Bess answered.

"And what did she find?" asked Dean.

"While investigating the home, she found that unrest spirits still dwell there, but she felt something more powerful than usual like these were not ordinary spirits that she could guide to move on and crossover, so she enlisted our help when we saw each other at the convention but I sensed the same thing she did and more" she finished.

"What exactly did you find?" Dean asked.

"While working with Missouri, we both felt that there was something powerful that was binding the sprits to the home, something magic. I did my usual seance and I was told such. Plus, we both sensed that these sprits are a dark force, something menacing. Look, we will tell you more in person, we just need extra help in dealing with these spirits, we can't handle it with just ourselves, so are you help us?" replied Madame Bess.

"We will be there straight tomorrow, me Sam and Ava" replied Dean. "Great, we would love to have the old gang back together again even under these circumstances," said Madame Bess.

"Well, we are looking forward to it too plus, we would always be willing to help anyway we could" Sam said.

"Yes, ma'am, afterall you been there for us so we will do the same since that's what we do for family" Dean added.

"Thank you very much dears, the feelings are mutual anyway before I go, Missouri would also like to speak to you guys since she hadn't seen you all in years if that's okay" Madame Bess replied.

"That would be perfect, we would love to hear from her" Dean said as both he and Sam were looking forward to speaking to the woman, they hadn't seen in a decade who helped them out of those years ago.

Within a minute the heard that familiar voice. "Sam, Dean, hey you guys it is so good to hear from you" replied Missouri.

"It's good to hear from you too, ma'am" Sam said.

"Same goes for me" Dean replied.

"I like to thank you all for helping us with this case, I actually requested you two to Bessie here, when I suggested we enlists hunters, and it surprised me that she already knew you and all and that Sam is now dating her granddaughter Gwen" Missouri said sounding excited.

"Yeah, we didn't expect her to know you either, I guess it really is a small world among psychics that is" Dean replied.

"Well, me and old Bessie here go way back, we have let's just say collaborated in the past on more than one occasion, she's a quite an old dame, and her granddaughter Gwen is a sweetheart, you are quite lucky there Sam" replied Missouri.

"I know I am I have said the same thing myself plenty of times" Sam replied.

"Anyway, about his case, we will fill you guys in some more once you all get here, we got a lot to talk about" Missouri said.

"Yes, well we will head there early tomorrow morning and be there by the afternoon" replied Dean.

"Okay and good to hear from you all, looking forward to seeing you again and thanks again boys," said Missouri.

"Same here" said Sam.

Afterwards, Missouri handed the phone back to Madame Bess. "Okay guys, we all will be looking forward to seeing tomorrow, Sam would you like me to get Gwen, she's in the guest room for now but I can get her and let know I'm on the phone with you all right now?" she asked Sam.

"No that's alright, I'll just phone her once you get off, but we do need to know the address and location and all" Sam said.

"Yeah sure, I was about to give that to you" she replied and then Madame Bess gave them the address to where she's staying which is now is with Missouri Mosely who insisted rather than the hotel they left.

Of course, there wasn't enough room for all them, so Sam, Dean and Ava would have to check into a motel. She also gave them directions which they all wrote down. Afterwards, they said their goodbyes and hung up.

"Wow, I can't believe our first case in awhile and it involves our old dear friend Missouri Moseley" Dean said.

"Who is this Missouri Moseley?" asked Adam who had been silent this this whole time as was the others.

"I remember you mentioning her before, some medium who helped you with a case that happened in your old house back in your old hometown in Lawrence" Ava replied.

Soon Dean and Sam filled everybody in on everything involving Missouri and the case back then and there plans for them along with Ava to go up there to help anyway we can.

"I would be do anything to help Madame Bess and Gwen, there like family to me too and this old friend of yours, Missouri" Ava said.

"Thanks, that means a lot" said Dean.

"Hey, same here we will be rooting for you from afar but if you need any assistance on spells or whatever we will be here" said Charlie referring to her and Adam.

"I know you two will and we always appreciate it" said Sam.

Then Adam turned to Charlie. "Well, I guess that leaves just you and me again alone in the bunker although I wonder when my brothers here will let me actually help in the hunting someday" he replied to her.

"Hey, you still got a way to go before you're ready" said Dean.

"I'll be like training forever and reading every book on spells and lore plus the kickboxing classes" Adam replied.

"Look, it took me and Dean years of training growing up but hey, just keep up with the work and maybe one day we will consider it" said Dean.

"That's the best we can give you" Sam added.

"Yeah, I guess" Adam said sounding not to thrilled as he was starting to get tired of being left behind in the bunker with Charlie and really wanted to carry on the family legacy of hunting and felt it should be giving that chance.

"Hey, for what's it's worth, they won't let me hunt with them either, even though I've already hunted part time on my own and helped them in a case before and I did a lot of training when I was in Oz" Charlie said.

"Hey, we just want you to get to be a little more experience before we let you work with us again, I mean after last time we just want to be extra careful" Dean said and they all knew what he was talking about.

Since finding Charlie's bloodied corpse in that bathtub, they have been super cautious when they learned she had been brought back from the dead by Rowena and one of the rules was she doesn't hunt with them until she's got a lot more training first and they feel she's ready. Although, maybe deep down, they might know she's more capable than they give her credit but are just being super cautious and allowing their fear of losing her again stand in the way but that is a discussion for another time.

"Anyway, we will head out to St. Louis early in the morning, so that means getting up early and eating our breakfast than leaving, forget about showering, we'll just wash up really quick in the sink then get dressed maybe get a toast and some scrambled eggs for breakfast, but we will have to eat quick" Dean said.

"Yeah, plus we can take some snacks with to eat on the way there since it will be a long drive" Sam said.

They all continued to organize their plan and then just continued to do what the normally do. By the evening, they had their dinner, washed the dishes and watched some TV before retiring to bed early. That evening they all got a good night sleep and the two couples even decided to skip sex so they can get plenty of rest for what is in store for them early tomorrow morning.
