Chapter 36 Meeting In Saint Louis

Very early the next morning everybody got up with Dean, Sam and Ava washing up quickly and getting dressed. They had already packed the previous night so there wasn't much to do but gather their things and say their goodbyes to Adam and Charlie who greeted them at the garage as the trio headed in the Impala with Ava sitting in the passenger seat while Sam was in the backset and drove off at around 6:30 am for the long trip to St. Louis.

They were driving for over a couple of hours when they decided to stop at a diner about a quarter to nine to get some breakfast. They all got the same thing, bacon egg, cheese and biscuit sandwich and coffee and ate in the car. Dean drank his coffee while sitting in the car then gobbled his sandwich while the driving as the others also finished their breakfast while they were on the road. They also brought snacks and some juice with them in case they got hungry some more plus Ava made all of them ham sandwiches the night before for their lunch so they wouldn't have to stop at a diner.

The gang did stop a couple times at a gas station to use the restrooms, but they finally made it to their destination in St. Louis at nearly 3:00pm and headed for a cheap motel to check into. This time Dean and Ava checked into their own room with one double bed while Sam checked into a nearby room with one single bed. Despite Dean saying not much will change with Ava moving in and now joining them on a case, a lot has changed.

Now, Dean and Ava get their own motel room while he gets a room to himself and a part of him couldn't help feeling a little bit funny about that as well as Ava sitting in the passenger seat while he sat in the backseat. Maybe it was him being used to sharing a room with Dean on their cases and sitting next to him in the car, being mainly just the two of them and now sometimes it's the three of them and that would mean getting his own room while Dean and Ava room together and he figures that is something he is going to have to get used to from now on.

He knows it's silly to feel a bit uncomfortable about the whole thing, since he tries to picture himself in Dean's shoes and if it was him and Gwen, he has to admit he would prefer to share a room with her too and leave Dean to get his own room. This is just something he will get over in time, but he has to admit he will miss bunking with his brother on some of these trips whenever Ava comes along but he is also happy for Dean and Ava and understands now they're a couple just like him and Gwen, they will need their privacy. Once he got settled in his own room, he heard a knock on the door a half-hour later and when he opened it, it was Dean with Ava.

"Hey, let's get going now Sam, time to head to Missouri's place, you still got the address and directions?" he asked him.

"Yeah, it still in my backpack" Sam told him.

"Okay, let's go now" Dean urged him.

They soon drove off heading to Missouri's place where Madame Bess and Gwen are also staying at. This time Sam sat in the passenger seat and Ava in the back since he needed to read him the directions on how to get there. It took quite some time but after about almost twenty minutes to finally get to her house which was a small one-story red brick house. After parking their car, they got out and walked to the front door and rang the doorbell. After a minute, the door opened it was Missouri Moseley standing right in front of them. She didn't look that much different since the last time they saw her despite it being around a decade ago and she was dressed in a nice bohemian outfit, a skirt and blouse and her wavy hair pulled back with a scarf and long earrings. She greeted them with a happy and excited look on her face.

"Oh, my Sam, Dean? I swear it's a long time now see. It must have been ages since I last saw you two, well now don't just stand there, come on in, come in" she said eagerly as the three of them entered the home. As they stood out in the hall, Missouri continued to look at the guys in amazement.

"Good seeing you too Missouri" said Sam.

"Yeah, same here" Dean said.

"Hey, it's that's all I get after all we've been through, come on and give me hug you two" she replied as she went over and hugged Sam in a motherly way, then turned to do the same thing to Dean.

"My, look at the pair of you" she replied when she finished hugging them and then turned to Sam. "My Sam, your hair got long, needing a bit of a haircut there" she said as he just looked a bit awkwardly like a kid visiting their aunt or grandmother they hadn't seen in while.

Then she turned to Dean. "And you Dean, you put on some weight there haven't you, well it's just as well, since you were quite skinny the last time I saw you" she told him making Dean feel a bit awkward this time.

Then Missouri turned to Ava as if she was acknowledging her for the first time. "And who is this young lady here?" she asked but before anybody had a chance to answer she answered for them. "Your girlfriend Dean? Well, who would have thought, you find someone to make an honest man out of you, and she's quite pretty I see" she said looking Ava over.

"How did you know?" Ava asked in amazement.

"It's all in the mind" Missouri replied poking her right side of her forehead with her finger. "Plus, old Bessie and Gwen already told me all about you Ava, it's nice meeting you" she finished.

"Oh course, Dean told me about your psychic ability to read minds" Ava said suddenly remember her talk with Dean about Missouri.

"And it's nice meeting you too" she finished. Missouri just smiled.

"Well, you don't need to read minds to know you are quite beautiful and seem a like a woman who can handle herself, which is good because Dean here can be quite to handful, and I bet you know that you're getting into" she replied teasingly glancing at Dean who looked a bit bashful.

"I sure do" Ava replied smirking at Dean who continued to just stand there looking embarrassed.

"Okay you all, enough talking about me like I'm not here" he said in a teasing way.

"Where's Gwen and Madame Bess, aren't they here too?" Sam asked eager to see Gwen.

"Yeah, they're here, come I take you two them plus I like you to meet my aunt and we all can catch up since it's been so long" Missouri said as she led them all into the living room.

Just then Madame Bess and Gwen showed up and when Sam saw Gwen, his eyes lit up. She looked quite pretty in her turtleneck floral long-sleeve shirt, brown trousers even though she wasn't wearing any makeup or jewelry, she still was as beautiful as ever. When she saw him, her eyes lit up too and they were like two lovers who hadn't seen each other in a long time.

"Oh, guys it's great you're here" Madame Bess.

"We thought we heard voices, but we were watching TV and couldn't hear you all at first" Gwen finished.

"Anyway, come here you all" Madame said as she rushed in and hugged each of the three arrivals as did Gwen did with Ava and Dean but with Sam, she they gave each other a passionate kiss and held each other for a while.

"I'm so glad you came to help and it's a chance for us to see each other too" Gwen said.

"Yeah, me too" said Sam as Missouri just stood there looking so touched by it all.

"Well, this is so nice both the boys have a sweetheart, of course, Gwen here already gave me the scoop about you two as well Sam and I have to say you make a handsome couple just like Dean and Ava" Missouri said pointing to both of them.

"Thank you, Missouri, we always thought so" said Gwen as she and Sam still didn't take their eyes off each other.

"Okay, that's enough of the mushy stuff, we need to get down to why we're here" Dean replied sounding a bit serious.

"But you guys just got here, wouldn't you all like a bite after such a long drive" said Missouri.

"That's okay, we already ate, we're not hungry now, we just want to know more about what you all told us over the phone and why you need our help" Sam said.

"Okay, I'll explain everything to you if you all sit down" Missouri said.

Just then they heard a voice that sounded like an elderly woman. "Hey, what's all the racket Missy is somebody here?" said the voice.

"Hey, who's that?" asked Ava.

"Oh dear, that's my Aunt Harriette, she must of woke up from her nap. Damn, I was hoping she would stay asleep longer so I could introduce you after we had this discussion" Missouri said.

"Just then a short and chubby elderly black woman came out of the hall from one of the bedrooms. She was completely gray-haired and walking with a cane as she seemed to walk like she was crippled in one leg and slightly slouched as she walked. When she entered the living room, she looked at the whole crowd and seemed to be confused and taken aback. "Missy, who are all these people?" she asked still looking confused.

Missouri, just walked over to her aunt and lightly touched her arm. "Aunt Harriette, these are the Winchesters, Dean and Sam and Ava Dean's companion" she replied pointing to each of them. "Remember, I mentioned them before, they come here to help me, Bessie and Gwen here with our problem. We talked about this before. Everybody, this is my dear Aunt Harriette, who raised me and now I'm taking here of her say hello everyone" Missouri went on.

Soon Dean, Sam and Ava exchanged friendly hellos and a how are you doing with Missouri's aunt as Missouri took hold of her arm.

"Oh, I see are these the people are going to help you with the spirits Missy?" Aunt Harriette asked, still looking at them with curiosity.

"Yes, Aunt Harriette, these are the people but right now why don't you got back in your room for a while and get some more rest while I talk to these people, this is quite important" she told her aunt as he started pulling her along.

"I'm rested enough Missy, I'm not tired anymore," said her aunt.

"Well, you can watch some TV in your room, just until I'm finishing discussing things over with everybody" Missouri said a bit more eagerly trying to get her aunt out of the room.

"Oh really, you don't have to shield me from this, I know what you do, Missy and what you're going to talk about" said her aunt who was insistent on staying.

"I know, I know, Auntie, but I just want bit a of privacy with them that's all and I promise afterwards, you can get more acquainted with everyone, but please just go back in the room for now, for me Auntie" said Missouri as she started to lead her aunt away.

"Oh, very well, Missy, you can have your old meeting about your ghosts, haunted housed and your psychic powers and all with your friends, but sometimes you forget I've been around all this stuff all my life. And I stay out of your way for now, but I won't be shut up in my room like some fragile child that needs to be protected by things that go bump in the night" her aunt told her seeming exasperated as Missouri led her away into the hall back to her room and shut the door.

Then she returned to the living room. "Sorry about that you all, but my aunt can be quite the handful herself" she replied.

"Missy?" Dean replied thinking about what the aunt called Missouri.

"Don't start, Dean that is just a nickname she gave me" Missouri said in an almost defensive tone.

"Whatever, Missy" Dean replied in a sarcastic tone.

"That's enough of that now, we need to get down to business and tell you know why we need your help" she said.

"From what you told on us on the phone it as to do with these spirits haunting an old house" Sam replied.

Missouri nodded her head and soon they all sat down on the couches.

"Yes, that's right" she told him.

"Just fill us in again" Dean told her.

"Well, as Bessie told you all, there was this new couple, the Fosters who moved out here in this city from Ohio and bought an old, abandoned home and was renovating it to live in when strange things began to happen, like a poltergeist only, objects moving only it was much more. They wake up and find threatening messages written on walls and mirrors. Were attacked by flying objects that injured them. I recall one of them said they were nearly strangled by some electric wire, and knocked unconscious by a lamp and the other one was locked in the attic for hours was so traumatized by seeing tarrying images. It got even worse after that, that they wind up fleeing from the home, but they are not ready to sell it and leave since it after all the work they put into fixing the place up, so they called me" Missouri explained.

"And you said something about a dark presence" Ava replied. Missouri nodded again.

"Yes, when I went to the house to get the spirits to cross over, it felt like something dark and powerful was keeping the spirits bound to the place, something real strong" Missouri finished.

"Yeah, it was so strong for her to do on her own, so she enlisted up to help when we ran into each other at the psychic convention having worked together in the past" Madame Bess added.

"But you found the same thing" Sam said.

"Yes, and from me talking to the spirits, I found that something really strong like a spell is bounding the spirits here and we even decided to do our own research and find out who were the previous owners of this place" she added.

"And what did you find?" asked Dean.

"We found out that this place once belonged to a couple named Josiah and Hildegard Crane in the 1920s in fact. It was said they were witches who worshiped the devil and would host meetings with their coven which was the rumor. It was also said residents were afraid of them and suspected them of witchcraft, especially after children started to go missing and it was thought the Cranes were behind it, using them as human sacrifices to the devil to gain more powers" Madame Bess explained.

The trio had shocked looks on their faces upon hearing all of this. Ava just put her hand to her mouth in shock. "Oh my, what were the guilty?" she asked.

"No one knows for sure since the bodies were never found and the police had no evidence that the Cranes were behind it, but this didn't satisfy the residents who decided to get their own justice" Madame Bess said.

"What did they do?" asked Sam.

"Well, from the information we found, it appears they stormed into the home one night, a whole gang of residents and attacked the Cranes and murdered them in their own home" Madame Bess told them.

"Wow, what happened after that?" asked Ava.

"Well, from what we found that police found them all bloodied lying on their beds apparently being stabbed to death. Nobody was arrested for the crime due to lack of evidence and nobody talked, and the case eventually closed. The house had remained abandoned for decades as nobody wanted to live there" Missouri finished.

"And that is it, nothing else?" Dean asked.

"That's all we learned but we believe the spirits are of the Cranes and like I said before, something like a power or energy seems to be binding them in that house, I felt it when I talked to the spirits, and I even saw images of them in the past performing what appeared to be a spell" Madame Bess finished.

"So, maybe the Cranes performed some kind of spell binding their spirits to this house after death" Sam added.

"How the heck did they know that they were going to get offed like that, were they psychic too?" Dean asked.

"I don't know, they could have predicted their fate, they were very popular around here and they were already suspected of being behind children being missing, who knows" Missouri replied.

"Yes, they could have sensed their time was up and wanted to make sure they didn't leave their home even after death" Madame Bess said.

"Oh wow, this is a lot," said Ava.

"I know but we dealt with worse before we can deal with this," said Dean.

"So, what do we do, find the Cranes' graves and burn their remains?" Sam asked.

"I wish it was that simple or we would have done that ourselves but it's likely that if their spirits are bound to that house, burning their remains won't get rid of them" Missouri replied.

"So, what can we do?" Dean asked.

"I suggest we go to that house and search for anything, notebooks, a diary, left behind that could help us get rid of these spirits and that's where you guys come in being pros and all since these sprits are quite hostile and there is no telling what they're capable of, I felt that too when I talked to the spirits" Madame Bess said.

"Don't worry, we will do anything we can to help" said Sam.

"Yeah, I so should we head to this house of horrors right now and so we can find a way to take care for these ghost witches?" Dean said as he was ready to go.

"Right now, I suggest you all relax some since you all just got here and then by 6:00pm, we have some dinner then we will head over to that place sometime afterwards" Missouri said.

"Works good for me" Ava said.

"Yeah, what she said" Dean added.

"Plus, I got to call Nancy, my neighbor and an old friend of my aunt's, to come over and watch over her this evening. I already came up of excuse of me going out with old friends to an event and may be back really late" Missouri explained.

"But we don't know how long this will take it could be a few days, what then?" asked Madame Bess.

"Well, I can't keep sending Nancy over to be her babysitter every night, she will question it and leaving her alone is not an option. Perhaps in the evening, one of us will remain behind to look after her" Missouri said.

"One of us?" Gwen asked.

"I know it can't be me, this was my case, plus my abilities can be quite useful" Missouri said.

Everybody else glanced at one another wondering who would volunteer but nobody would step up since everybody wanted to go.

"I suppose, I will" Gwen finally spoke up.

"Gwen?" Sam replied.

"Hey, you already got Dean, three hunters and my grandma and Missouri as two psychics, that's more than enough for this case" she said.

"Why, that is very nice of you dear, but it won't be the same without you there if that time comes" Madame Bess replied.

"Same here" Sam said.

"Hey, well that's not count our chickens yet, I said if the time comes, we don't know if it will. For all we know, this case will end late this night, but I just wanted to be cautious, since you never know" Missouri said.

"We'll worry about that when the times comes, right now one thing at time, lets head to this place and see what we can find to get rid of this witch duo" Dean said, and they all agreed.

By that evening at 6:00, they had their dinner as Missouri said they would, and her Aunt Harriette came out of her room to enjoy the meal with them and even though she was polite and curious about the company over she still seemed a bit out of it at times as Missouri had told them all about her getting a bit senile over the years. After their dinner was over, she cleaned up and Madame Bess helped her while the others hung out in the living room with Harriette who was hard to entertain as she seemed to forget quite easily at times and sometimes repeated the same questions. Afterwards, Missouri called her neighbor Nancy to come over to watch her aunt while they all go out claiming she was going to an event with friends who arrived and will be home late. Nancy was happy to accept as she didn't have anything else to do that night and she had known Harriette for years and lived alone herself since her divorce.

About a quarter to 8:00, Nancy showed up, a middle-aged woman around Missouri's age. She looked at the others curiously as Missouri introduced them to her but didn't ask too many questions about them as Missouri explained that her friends arrived in town and they all are leaving for a concert and will be back real late and she could sleep in her room, if she gets tired. Then they said their goodbyes were off with Missouri and Madame Bess driving in Missouri's car and Sam, Dean, Ava and Gwen all riding in the Impala all heading to the same destination which was the old haunted house and hoping they can stop the threat by that night.
