Chapter 37 Into the Haunted House

It was already dark when they arrived at the haunted old house. It was a large two-story Victorian home that looked like it hadn't been occupied in decades. It was gray and quite rusty looking.

"Well, it looks just like your typical spooky house" Dean replied as he Sam and the women got out of car while Missouri and Madame Bess out of out of hers.

They all stood outside the house close together just staring at the old house that looked like one of those typical haunted houses seen in movies and TV.

"Okay, everybody, it's time to deal with these two evil spirits once and for all, I hope you're all ready because I can still sense the dark presence and that it doesn't want us here" Missouri remarked.

"I can sense that too" Madame Bess said.

"Don't you worry, we all came prepared" Dean said as he, Sam and Ava were carrying rifles and they had brought the ghost detector which Gwen was carrying since the others were too busy pointing their rifles around their surroundings just in case they get ambushed by sprits.

Of course, the bullets can't kill them but make them disappear just for a while at least. Inside the house looked a bit better than the outside as the place was still in the process of being renovated. There was still some old furniture around that was now dusty and looked some looked worn down. The group continued looking around the surroundings as they expected the worst and was just waiting for anything to pop up and surprise them.

"Okay, Missouri, Ma'am, do you sense anything still?" asked Dean as he kept looking over his shoulder holding his rifle up.

Both of the women paused a bit.

"Only that I can feel that evil is still in this place" said Missouri.

"Me too" Madame Bess said.

"I can feel the presence too, but I don't know where they're now or have any idea what they're going to do. I wish I could get my visions right now because that would be a start" said Gwen a bit frustrated as she walked close to Sam.

"Don't worry, I'm sure you'll get your visions soon and we will get through this" Sam reassured her as they both quickly glanced at each other exchanging smiles.

"Okay, even though this may sound like a cliché, I suggest we split up in pairs and search the house around for anything we could find on the ghosts of the witch husband and wife duo, maybe they left behind a notebook or something and if we encounter those two ghosts, we know what to do" Dean said.

"I don't know, shouldn't it be better we all remain together?" Gwen asked looking a bit nervous.

"I think we get better results splitting up, I mean, we may not be getting nowhere right now and if anybody is in trouble and needs help just give a yell" Dean said.

"Hey, I think Dean is right here, it's probably best if we split up and besides, we have protection if those two witch ghosts pop out" Ava said.

"Yeah, I actually think Dean has a good point, this time" Missouri added who couldn't help by be her snarky self.

"Okay, so how should we do this, although I prefer me and Gwen remain together" said Madame Bess.

"Well, actually, I think me and Ava should pair up, Sam and Gwen and you and Missouri" Dean said.

"I don't like the idea of me and Gwen separating in this place" said Madame Bess.

"Don't worry grandmom, I will feel safe with Sam after everything we've been through already" Gwen told her grandmother.

"Okay then, I guess you can stay with Sam but please the two of you stay together" said Madame Bess.

"Don't worry ma'am, I won't let her out of my sight" Sam told her.

"Yeah, I bet neither of them will be out of the other's sight that's for sure" Missouri murmured to Madame Bess in a snarky tone.

Madame Bess just ignored her. "Please you two be careful" she told them.

"What about you two, you don't have any weapons to defend yourself" said Gwen to Madame Bess and Missouri.

"Don't worry about us, we have this salt to use for protection, plus we will give you a holler, trust us, you'll know when we need you" Missouri told them.

They all said their farewells and split up with Sam and Gwen went up the rusty stairs while Dean and Ava went in the left and Madame Bess and Missouri went right. After Sam and Gwen reached the second floor, they started searching through every room which had nothing but rusty worn-out looking furniture and even cobwebs. Sam knowing a thing a two even removed painting that were hung on the walls just in case something was behind it like a safe. But there was nothing. After searching all the rooms, they decided to search the attic which seemed like the most likely place to store anything material important. Sam, being very tall, was able to reach the attic hatch easily. When he opened the hatch, he was able to grab the attic ladder and pull it down.

Then he and Gwen climbed up the attic with Sam going first just in case. Inside the attic was dusty and smelled bad and there were so many cobwebs that would brush up against their faces. Inside the attic was just some old boxes that contained a bunch old junk that people usually throw out. There were some old torn up paintings, an old broken lamp, and some old ornaments and decorations and other old useless items. There was also an old rusty looking mirror that was cracked and an old chest. Sam and Gwen searched through all the boxes, using a flashlight, but they couldn't find anything important. Then they decided to open the old chest that was almost covered in dust. Sam opened it up and inside smelled like old socks and sneakers.

However, both Sam and Gwen's eyes lit up when they looked inside and saw among a lot of more junk an old classic notebook. The notebook itself had a lot of dust on it that when Sam picked it up, he had to brush off all the dust first.

"Do you think that there is anything useful in it?" Gwen asked.

"I don't know but let's see" Sam said feeling hopeful that there was something inside that could help them.

Sam opened the book and using the flashlight started reading. The notebook contained mostly what appeared to be ingredients for spells and rituals all written in pencil. Both Sam and Gwen went through page through page but couldn't find anything that was useful plus some pages were torn out leaving them even more curious.

"Oh, Sam I don't think we are going to find anything in here that will help us get rid of these ghosts" Gwen said sounding fretful and about to give up.

Just then, Sam's eyes lit up as he got to near the end of the notebook. "Hey, I found something" he cried out to Gwen who quickly turned to look at the page and read what it said.

It appeared to be directions on how to be perform a spell that binds your souls to anyplace you wish after death.

"Oh my, we found something!" cried out Gwen.

However, after reading it over, Sam's face went from excited to disappointed again as he turned the pages.

"Of course, this is a list on how to perform a soul-binding spell, but it doesn't say how to undo the spell and there isn't anything else we need" Sam said as he sighed and closed the old notebook.

"Does that mean we're back to square one?" Gwen asked also looking a bit defeated.

"Basically" Sam replied.

Sam didn't know what else to do but put the notebook back into the chest and close It still looking a bit disappointed. Gwen placed her hand on his shoulder.

"Don't worry Sam, we will find a way to get ride to rid of these spirits. I just wonder if the others have better luck than we do?" she replied.

"I hope so, we hadn't had much luck at all" Sam replied.

They paused for a few seconds then all of the sudden, Gwen seemed to go into a trance like-state leaving Sam worried.

"Gwen, Gwen what's going on" he said as he lightly shook her but was still looked to be in a trace with her eyes rolling about and Sam knew that Gwen was having one of her visions again.

Then she finally got out of her trance with a fearful look on her face. "Oh my god!" she cried out as if she had just woken up from a nightmare.

"What is it Gwen, what did you see?" asked Sam anxiously as he knew by now if Gwen was having such a vision, it usually was something bad.

Gwen just looked at him, her face expression full of fear like she just saw something horrifying. "Oh Sam, I saw something awful about to happen in this house tonight!" she cried out still shaken up about her visions.

"Gwen tell me quick what did you see, does it affect all of us?" Sam asked anxiously as he was feeling scared too.

Gwen nodded her head. "Yes Sam, from what I saw something is going to happen to Dean and Ava" she said still looking scared.

"What's going to happen to Dean and Ava?" asked Sam anxiously, now scared for his brother.

Gwen swallowed trying to calm down to explain what she saw. "I saw Dean and Ava laid down on the floor in a room, I think the basement and appeared to be unconscious. There were circles drawn around them each and candles on top of the circles and I saw the spirits of a man and woman, I think the Cranes as they cut Dean and Ava's arms drawing their blood pour it into a pot that was sitting between them. It seemed like they were performing a spell" she told him.

Sam's eyes lit up at the thought of his brother being in danger and these ghosts performing a spell on them. "Go on, what else did you see?" he urged her.

"They began chanting in a language I don't understand, I don't think it was Latin but anyway, as they kept chanting, a huge wave of black smoke came out of the pot and fell on the Cranes and it seemed to consume them and the next thing, they became the black smoke and each of them entered Dean and Ava's bodies through their mouths, then Dean and Ava's bodies began to glow and a gust of wind blew out all the lit candles and it was all over. Dean and Ava opened their eyes, but it wasn't them anymore it was the Cranes who took over their bodies" Gwen finished still sounding terrified.

Sam felt even more fear than before as he knew his brother and Ava were in danger. "You mean those ghosts are going to possess Dean and Ava with a spell so they can use them as human vessels?" he asked.

Gwen nodded. "Yeah, I could sense that was the purpose of the spell to for their souls to enter Dean and bodies" she told him.

"That means Dean and Ava are in trouble, we need to warn them fast!" cried Sam.

However, just as he said that they were a huge noise that made them both jump. Both of them got up as Sam dropped the old notebook he forget he was still holding. When they turned around, they saw that the attic ladder was risen up on its own and before they knew it, the attic hatch door closed too.

"Sam!" cried out Gwen as they both ran to the where the hatch door was which was now blocked by the ladder and there was no way for them to get out.

"What the hell happened!" she continued to cry out as they looked at ladder blocking where the hatch door was frantically.

"I don't know, it's like someone or something caused the door to close" Sam replied as he attempted to move ladder now folded out of the way to get to the hatch door, but he was unable to move it.

"Come on and help me!" he cried out to Gwen who quickly helped Sam try to move the ladder, but it was no use as it wouldn't budge.

No matter how much and how long they tried they just couldn't get to the hatch door and it eventually gave up both scared at the thought of them being trapped in the attic.

"It must have been those spirits, as soon as I told you about my vision the door closed, that is no way a coincidence" Gwen said.

"I know, they must want to stop us from warning Dean and Ava" Sam said.

"We got to get out of here and warn them plus, I don't want to be stuck here forever!" Gwen said frantically.

"Don't worry Gwen we will, I just hope Dean and Ava are alright and your grandmother and Missouri" Sam told her.

"Maybe if we scream for help, they will hear us" Gwen suggested.

"Up here, they're all downstairs the last we saw them" Sam reminded her.

"But maybe some of them went upstairs too, it's worth a try" Gwen said.

Sam nodded, "Okay" he said.

Soon the both of them were screaming for help at the top of their lungs and they did this for at least a couple of minutes but unfortunately, nobody answered them, and they eventually gave up due to be tired of screaming.

"Nobody heard us, we could be stuck here for how long" Gwen cried out in fretting tone.

"Hey, they will eventually wonder where we are and come up here" Sam said as he put his hand on Gwen's shoulder to reassure her.

"But we don't know how long that would be and it could be too late by then" Gwen said still looking fretful. She paused for a moment then her eyes lit up again in fear. "Oh, my god, I just thought of something, what if the others are locked in a room the same as us and can't get out either. "We all could be trapped for how long and those ghosts will perform their spell on Dean and Ava so they can take their bodies and we won't be able to help them" she went on now even more worried than before.

Sam had to admit that the thought had occurred to him too that everybody else is also trapped and can't get out and likely because the ghosts want to prevent them from helping Dean and Ava in their devious plan to steal their bodies. Then he thought about calling the one person who they could always count on, Castiel. Sam quickly turned to Gwen and grabbed her shoulders.

"Hey, Gwen, look I don't want to worry you some more but it's possible that the others may be unable to get to us because those ghosts have them locked somewhere too" he told her.

"Oh Sam!" cried out Gwen in fright.

"Now don't panic, I still can try to contact Castiel to help us, he could be our only hope here" he went on trying to reassure her.

"Yes, Castiel I didn't think of that can you call him right now?" she asked him.

Sam nodded as he began to call out to Castiel. Meanwhile, somewhere else in the mansion around the same time Sam and Gwen got locked up in the attic, Madame Bess and Missouri were downstairs looking through one of the rooms that had very old worn-out furniture and an old worn out looking piano that all were dusty, and some were covered with cobwebs. Missouri was examining the old piano seeing if it trapped door that stored something like she seen in those old mystery films but when she didn't find any, she just started touching the piano keys to see if it still worked and to her surprise sound came out as if it was new.

Madame Bess was looking through old wardrobes and underneath couch cushions and a chair to see if she could find anything when she heard Missouri tapping the piano keys.

"Could you please stop doing that, we need to concentrate on finding something" Madame Bess cried out in frustration in part because they didn't seem to be getting anywhere and she was wondering if this was all a waste of time.

"Hey, nothing wrong with being a bit curious if this old thing still works" said Missouri who then quickly stopped.

"But we have to remain focused here, personally I don't think we are going to find anything in this room, we might have better luck upstairs in the bedrooms" said Madame Bess.

"Sam and Gwen are already checking the upstairs room" Missouri reminded her.

"In large home like this, there has to be many bedrooms to check, we help them by checking some of the rooms taking the load off them" said Madame Bess.

"You're probably right, I swear, this is going to be a very long night, I can tell without having to sense it, I just know it" Missouri said sighing.

Just then Madame Bess stood there and froze seemingly in a trance as she started to have visions in her head, the same visions Gwen had of Dean and Ava trapped in the basement lying on the floor as the two ghosts of Crane couple casting some ritual on them, she can see the whole thing as they then transport their souls into their bodies. Missouri walks over to her out of curiosity as she knows that she's having one of her visions and just watches as she waits for her to finish so she can tell her what she saw. After Madame Bess is out of her trance, she just has a frightened look on her face as if she seen something horrible.

"Bessie what is it huh, what did you see?" she asked her curiously.

Before Madame Bess had a chance to say anything, Missouri cried out, "Dean and Ava are in going to be in danger, Oh no!" she said now also looking frightened.

Madame Bess knew Missouri read her thoughts and probably saw some the images she had seen herself, so she didn't have to explain a lot. She just nodded her head instead.

"Yes Missy, and we need to get to them quickly before it happens, let's go!" she cried out as she grabbed a hold of Missouri's arm urging her to follow her.

However, before they had a chance to move, the heard sounds of the doors closing, and they could sense that there was a presence causing it and it meant danger.

"Oh my, I have a feeling something is happening" cried out Madame Bess as she looked around feeling scared.

"So do I, those ghosts are behind those sounds and I have a funny feeling" Missouri said but rather than finish her sentence she ran out of the room and Madame Bess ran out after her.

"Hey, where are you going Missy?" she cried out to her.

Missouri didn't answer but just ran to the front door and tried to open it but couldn't. She tried again and again to turn the doorknob, but it wouldn't move at all.

"What is it Missy?" Madame Bess cried out after catching up to her although she already sensed what was going on.

Missouri finally gave up trying to open the door and just stopped and turned to Madame Bess.

"Just what I thought, those spirits are behind this, they won't let any of us go, not until they have accomplished their plan which is what they are going to do to Dean and Ava" Missouri said.

"I sensed that too, when I saw the images of what they are going to do them. We need to find Dean and Ava more so than ever" Madame Bess cried out.

"They probably got them locked up so they can't escape I fear but still we need to head to that basement just the same" Missouri said.

"I agree, let's go" said Madame Bess and with that they both took off running heading for basement hoping not to run into the two ghosts in the process.

Meanwhile, Dean and Ava had been exploring the dark and dusty basement that had cobwebs all around and a rat was scurrying by, and it look like something out of a spooky old house. Dean tried to lighten the mood by making lame jokes to which Ava just rolled her eyes and kept looking around.

"Dean, I don't think we are going to find anything useful down here" she finally told him.

"Hey, don't give up yet, who knows, maybe we could stumble upon something yet" he told her.

"Maybe, but I have to admit this place is really giving me the creeps and I've been in scarier places before" Ava said.

"To be fair, the house on the hill is giving me the hebe jebes too but I have a hunch usually they find something useful in the basement" Dean replied.

"Yeah, like skeletons or dead cats" Ava said teasingly as Dean just smirked amused by her remark.

Just then they noticed the furnace which they had passed before, and Dean went over to it as Ava followed. It was a very old-fashioned type of furnace that had a little door you opened and put coal into. Dean just stared at it out of curiosity as he just had a hunch.

"Gee, I wonder" he said as he quickly reached out to the door and trying to pry it open, but it wouldn't budge at first.

"You think something is in there that could be useful?" Ava asked.

"I don't know but it's a start" Dean said as he struggled trying to open it and Ava finally offered to help and wit the two of them together pulling on the door quite hard after a couple of minutes it finally pried open.

They both looked inside as it was quite filthy with ashes and dust and Dean reached inside with his hand feel through the old dirty ashes until he felt something.

"Hey, I found something" he told Ava as he kept reaching and soon pulled out what was an old notebook with the covers completely dirty and worn out.

He had the notebook out as both he and Ava looked it over.

"I wonder what this is doing in the furnace" said Ava.

"Probably, they hid it in there so nobody would find it" Dean said.

"But why, what's in it, some spells or rituals?" Ava asked.

Soon Dean opened up the dirty notebook and even the pages where dirty and worn out, but he and Ava could fairly make out some of what was written.

"Oh my, this seems to be for spells just like we thought" said Ava.

Then Dean turned to what appeared to be a spell on transporting souls into new bodies and before they could finish reading it, they heard a sound of a door slam which spooked them both.

"What was that?" asked Ava.

"I think that was the door" Dean answered.

Then both of them ran to where the staircase was and looked up and saw that the door was indeed closed. They both ran upstairs in a hurry not and Dean tried to open the basement door not realizing he still had the notebook in his hand which he quickly handed over to Ava as he tried to pry the door open, but it wouldn't budge, they were trapped.

"My god, Dean what is going on!" Ava cried out anxiously.

"I don't know but it looks like we're trapped in this basement, I can't get this dang door to open, it's like it's locked but it isn't" Dean cried out.

"Those ghosts must be behind all of this" Ava said.

"No kidding, but seriously I guess Mr. and Mrs. Strange got to be behind all of this, for some reason they don't want us to leave this room" Dean told her.

"Why, why keep us trapped in here?" Ava asked.

"I don't know but I have a funny feeling that those ghosts don't want any of us to leave, I wonder if they got the others trapped too" Dean said.

"Well, I'm not just going to stand here and be helpless" Ava said.

Then she pushed Dean said and went over to the door and started banging on it, yelling for help as loud as she could.

"Help, help, please help us we're trapped in here!" she kept repeating.

"It's no use" Dean said but he was hoping that at least Madame Bess and Missouri would come to their rescue.

Both Dean and Ava felt really frightened and didn't know why the ghosts locked them down there in the basement nor what they had in store for them, but both got a funny feeling that whatever it was it was bad.
