Chapter 44 An Old Familiar Face, A New Place
Both Dean and Sam just stood there surprised at seeing Becky Rosen again who is now in the sheriff's office where they are there to be present for further questioning of a witness to the latest killings of a small town and question her themselves and neither could believe that out of all people that witness happens to be Becky Rosen. The Becky Rosen that was once Sam's obsessive fan who went as far as dope him with a love potion then marry him to fulfill her fantasy of be Mrs. Sam Winchester. Even though she did come around and helped them defeat the crossroad demon who was causing all trouble. Of course, that was years ago.
The last time they encountered her was last year when she was under the influence of a magic ring that turned her into a completely different person and even more chaotic and destructive than ever before but luckily, they were able to save her in time and things seemed resolved when they last saw her at the greyhound bus station in Columbus heading for her aunt's place. Now she's standing right before them no longer looking like the geeky chick they remembered when the first met her. She was dressed in a short-sleeved burgundy Henley button down shirt and grey jeans with sneakers and no makeup her shoulder-length dark chestnut brown hair down and parted at the side and basically looks the same as she did the last time they saw her.
Becky too appeared to be shocked at the sight of them and the expression on her face said it all. However, even though she nearly slipped and cried out their names, she managed to refrain from doing anything to give them away. The guys did the same as they refrained themselves from doing anything that revealed that they know Becky Rosen. They both faced each other pausing and there is a silence between everyone, and the sheriff notices their facial expressions on all three of them and could sense something was up that he didn't know about.
"Hey, what's going on here, do you all know each other or something?" he asked.
Becky composed herself, trying to act all normal, not wanting to give the Winchesters away as she knew they were working on a case so instead she just swallowed. "No sir, I just thought that one of them looked like someone I knew a long time ago" She said.
"Well, I haven't seen this young lady before in my life, I guess I just have those faces" Sam replied as Dean sighed out of nervously of nearly giving themselves away and relived Becky didn't mess up and blow it for them.
"Okay, by the way agents, this is Ms. Becky Rosen, she's the witness from Pleasantville, I told you about Ms. Rosen these are FBI agents, Agents Van Holt and Springfield who arrived to for this case. They will want to be present for your statement and ask you some questions themselves, okay" said the sheriff who didn't seem too suspicious.
Becky just looked a bit amused at hearing the names trying to keep a straight face. She briefly glanced at the Winchesters then turned back to the sheriff. "FBI agents?" she replied trying to sound surprised.
"That's right, ma'am, for some reason the FBI are sticking their noses in this case but it's not for me to question it just work with them" he said.
Becky turned towards the Winchester brothers again and they all faced each other trying to act like they didn't know one another. "Please to meet you I guess sirs" she replied.
"Same here, Ms. Rosen" Sam replied right back.
"Anyway, Ms. Rosen, you said you had more info for us that you had just remembered" the sheriff replied.
Becky walked up to the sheriff's desk with Dean and Sam following behind and they stood some feet away listening in on what Becky was about to say hoping it was useful. "Well, I told you that the last time I saw Ned was when he walked me to my home after we left Myra's house since our houses are so close, we can just walk over to each other's place. I mean my house was just a few houses down and his was right across the street from mine. Well, anyway as we were walking, I remembered that had funny feeling we were being watched somehow" she told him.
"Being watched you say?" the sheriff asked.
Becky just nodded her head and went on. "Yeah, I mean I didn't say anything to Ned at the time, because I thought he would think I was just overreacting because of the recent killings" she finished.
"How come you didn't mention this my deputies first took your statement?" asked the sheriff.
"I admit at first I had forgotten about it being so shook up about Ned and then I just thought about it, but I didn't think your deputies would take me seriously any more than Ned would have especially since I didn't see anybody else outside even when I looked back there was nobody there" Becky said.
"Well, how come you felt you were being watched then if it was just the two of you might I asked B…..Ms. Rosen?" Sam asked almost slipping and about to say Becky's first name, but he refrained to keeping it formal.
Becky turned to him trying to also refrain from showing that she knows him. "I just had this gut feeling, an instinct, can't explain what it was, I it just felt it, felt like we were being were watched" she replied.
"Yet, you didn't see or hear anything at all that night?" Dean asked.
"Not while Ned was walking me home but there was something else" Becky replied.
"Something else what?" asked Sam a bit urgently.
"It happened about over an hour later when I was in my house in my bedroom preparing for bed. I also was watching TV, a nice murder mystery that I was watching since I was a bit too anxious to sleep. I was really getting into the mystery when I thought I heard a man's scream coming from outside, so I went to over to the window and looked outside and I could see Ned's house which is directly across from mine, and I could see that the lights were on, and I could hear his television on. At first, I did think that he was in some kind of trouble but then I figured the screaming likely came from is television and it sounded like he was watching something scary, you know Ned is a bit of a horror fan, so I just backed off and went back to my bed.
But just before, I went back to be bed, I swear that while I was looking outside for a brief moment, like less than a second, I thought I saw a very tiny flicker of bright light in the back of the house on the left side and a what appeared to be some kind of shape or something but then I turned away for less than a second and when I turned back to glance the shape and light was gone and I questioned if I saw anything at all" Becky explained.
Both Dean and Sam's eyes lit up at the same time. "A shape, what shape can you describe it?" asked Sam eagerly.
Becky shook her head. "The thing is I can't, it happened so quick, and I doubted if I saw anything at all, maybe just letting my head play tricks on me because of what happened to the others" she told them.
"Yet, you didn't mention this to my deputies the next morning" the sheriff replied.
"I know, I had just remembered it, but I still didn't think the deputies would take me seriously especially since I can't describe the dark shape or figure I saw can't even say if it was a shape of a person or not" Becky said.
"So why mention it now?" Dean asked.
"Because it had been weighing on me that I didn't tell the deputies about it when I talked to them and I finally made up my mind and decided to come in and tell you about it sheriff even if it's not important and leads nowhere, I figured knowledge no matter how small should be given, they aways say that in all the cop shows I've seen" said Becky.
"True, Ms. Rosen, I thank you for coming in and I will take note of what you told us" the sheriff said.
"But there's more sheriff" said Becky eagerly.
"There is!" cried out Dean and Sam almost at the same time.
"Yes, I have other information I want to give you that could be useful" Becky said. "
What is it ma'am?" asked the sheriff.
"Well, for one thing, yesterday, I went back over to Ned's place and just had a hunch to walk around the back of his house hoping to find a clue maybe, and I think I did find something" Becky said a bit eagerly.
"What could you have found that my deputies didn't?" asked the sheriff.
"Well, I didn't find anything at first then I decided before I gave up, to look through the bushes on the side of his house and I as I was just looking it, just going through every part of those bushes, I found was this" Becky finished as she reached into her purse and pulled out a small plastic bag and showed it to the sheriff.
Dean and Sam also went closer to look at it as the sheriff took the plastic bag in this hand to get a closer look and then he saw it. It was a one strand of hair that was light brown in color. As the sheriff observed Dean asked to look at it too, so the sheriff handed him the plastic bag as both he and Sam just looked it over.
"Well, it appears to be human hair alright" Dean said as he kept observing it.
Becky just stood there with a proud look on her face, taking in the fact that she did something that was helpful.
"Yeah, and it does appear to be somewhat of clue, this strand could be anyone's in the town and we can't be sure it belongs to the killer or not. For all we know it could be some kid who was playing around or something" the sheriff replied.
"But, I was doing a lot of thinking about this case since Ned was killed and I figured out something that could also be vital" said Becky.
"What is this vital information you have this time?" asked the sheriff.
Becky just swallowed. "For one thing, I realized that Ned and the other two victims had some things in common. The first is that they all hung out at the County Line Bar in town" she explained.
"No offense Ms. Rosen but a lot of folks in that town hang out at that bar what could that have to do with their deaths?" asked the sheriff getting a little bit impatient.
"I was getting to that. Anyway, they all got into some conflict with some members of this of this gang of bikers that hang out there now and I like to point these bikers are not from around there, the arrived there shortly before the killings, that even your deputies thought them to be suspects. And Ned told me while he was playing pool there, he nearly got into a fight with one of the members, I believe they call him Speed" Becky explained.
"Speed?" Dean replied.
"Don't ask" said Becky who then went on with her story.
"So, there was nearly a fight until the bartender stopped it and I've seen this Speed and some of the other members around town and he happens to have light brown hair" she finished still feeling proud of her detective work.
The sheriff didn't seem too impressed and just sighed.
"Ma'am we know all this already, in fact those bikers were our first suspects, the problem with your theory is that Speed has an alibi for the night Ned was killed. According to the bartender and some other witnesses, this Speed fellow was at the bar until it closed around 11pm. There was no way he could have been the one that killed Ned, besides the fact he was riding his motorcycle, I think the neighbors including you would have heard the sound of a motorcycle it he rode into Ned's place and offed him" said the sheriff.
"What about any of the others?" Becky asked.
"They all too have alibis, as they claim they were at the motel playing a game of cards that night and the owner even saw them come in that evening around a quarter to ten after leaving the bar" said the sheriff.
"But, they could be lying, kind of convenient that they all have only each other as alibis, either of them could have left the motel later that night" said Becky.
"Probably and probably not but the fact remains we don't have any proof they had anything to do with any of the deaths" the sheriff said.
"What about the other murders, do these group of people of have alibis for that too?" Sam asked.
"They had the same story, that they were at their motel rooms hanging out or some were at the bar until closing time and the bartender even saw them just hanging around right outside after closing time. We just can't place them anywhere near the victims" the sheriff replied.
Becky just looked disappointed.
"Thanks for your help Ms., we will have this new evidence examined but leave the detective work for the professionals, now if you don't have anything else important to offer, I would like to finish my talk with the FBI here" said the sheriff.
Becky quicky turned to the Sam and Dean and back to the sheriff.
"Okay sheriff, I guess my work here is done, have a nice day" she told him then she turned to the Winchesters again. "And you two sirs" she added.
"Yeah, Same here, nice chatting with you too Ms." Sam said as Becky just turned around and walked out the door giving both Dean and Sam a final glance before she left.
Now the Winchesters turned back to the sheriff.
"One thing we need to know sheriff is about these bikers Ms. Rosen mentioned, what is the deal with them and the victims all having run-ins with them?" Dean asked.
"Yeah, these biker gang as you may call them arrived actually a couple of weeks before the first killing. The story is that they were running out of money and need to earn some I order to move onto their destination whatever that is so they stayed in Pleasantville, stayed at the motel while they got jobs, mainly odd jobs in and outside of Pleasantville until they get enough money they need. As for the victims, it's true that they each had a run-in with some members of these guys. Roy nearly got into a fight with one of them when after bumping into each other and Roy's drink ended up spilling on this guy's shirt. His friends had to pull him away and they left the bar an hour before Roy left as the guy was pretty drunk" the sheriff explained.
"What was the name of this guy?" Dean asked.
"Yeah, from what I remember, they call him Ripp, weird name but than again these bikers always had peculiar names I remember his real name is Owert Jackson from the deputy's report. According to him and the others, he was in his motel room sleeping it off, his roommate, even confirmed it saying they were both there all night and we can't prove otherwise. Besides, their motorcycles remained at the motel all night as the other guests would have heard the sound if they had left" said the sheriff.
"And what about this Billy dude?" asked Sam.
The sheriff just sighed a bit. "Oh yeah, I remember the report the deputies took. Apparently, he got into it with two of the members over wanting to use the pool table and it just escalated until the bartender broke it up and kicked the two out and that was around 10pm so by the time Billy left the bar to go home the guys were already gone" said the sheriff.
"What are their names and do who are their alibis?" asked Dean.
"From what I recall they are called Mingo and Ice" said the sheriff.
"Lovely names" Dean replied sarcastically.
"We did a background check on them and their real names are Marion Cobbs and Desmond Shumaker and they had some run-ins with the law before but their alibis was after being kicked they returned to their motel room and never left the whole night and one witness also a staying at the motel saw them as they arrived back" explained the sheriff.
Both Dean and Sam paused for a moment as they were in thought.
"You know I suspected these new arrivals at first too but with them having alibis and there being no way to prove any of the others were near the victims when they were killed, we're hit a loop. But I saw this, we need to find the out who the killer or killers are before somebody else dies" said the sheriff.
"We understand that sheriff and thanks for your time. If you have any important info for us, please contact us" said Sam as he and Dean each gave the sheriff their cards.
The sheriff took the cards quickly and put them inside his desk. "Will do, fellas, hope you do the same for us, we need all the help we can get to nail bastard or bastards who is doing this and people are on edge as it is" he told them.
Soon the Winchesters exchanged their goodbyes to the sheriff and left his office and headed out of the sheriff's office altogether.
"Wow, can you believe it, of all people to run into it is Becky Rosen, your onetime number one fan and ex who is now in the middle of all of this" Dean cried out a bit frustrated.
"Yeah, she was the last person I expected to be here and be a witness" Sam said.
"Yeah, still can't get over that, I mean what is she doing in Pleasantville anyway of all places?" Dean wondered.
"That surprised me too, I remember the last time we saw her she was heading for her aunt's place in…." replied Sam who stopped in the middle of his sentence.
"What Sam, what were you going to say about her aunt?" Dean asked curiously.
Sam just sighed. "I just remembered Dean, that when we left Becky at that bus station in Columbus, she was heading right here in Lancaster to be with her aunt. I can't believe I forgot the name of the city she was heading" he said.
"Never mind all that, she's living in Pleasantville, the town we are investigating a possible werewolf case of all places" Dean said.
"Yeah, I know Dean that confuses me too" Sam said as he paused a bit then spoke up again.
"But you know Dean, all that matters now is she is in the middle of all this, she's a potential witness and that could be useful to us and if you stopped and think about it that also may make her a target too" Sam said.
"Perfect, so I guess that means we have to protect your former crazy ex again" Dean said not seeming too happy about all of it.
"Yeah Dean, if that's what we gotta do and I thought you were over the crazy fan girl thing with her" Sam told him.
"I am over it, Sam but that doesn't mean I look forward to making a habit of running into her, I mean I get she's not that person anymore who doped you with a love potion and tricked you down the aisle and that she was under a influence of a magic ring when she was psycho chick Rebecca and I'm for second chances considering our track records, I really am but still…" Dean replied as Sam cut him off.
"Yeah, I know she can be a bit of a handful" Sam said.
"A handful, that is an understatement even when she is her normal Becky, I mean little Miss No. Fan is going to want to be in the middle of our case and if we don't have enough to deal with we will have to do with her wanting to relive her fantasy as helping in our latest case like some adventure in the books with her interfering electing herself as our assistant or something like that" Dean told him.
"Don't worry Dean, we're tell her to stay out of this case and let us handle things" Sam said.
"Just hope the fangirl listens, though I admit I am relieved that at least we don't have to deal with her alter-ego, Crazy Rebecca this time around, no matter how much hotter she was" Dean said in a sarcastic way.
Sam just nodded his head. "Me too" he told him.
As they were getting closer to where the Impala was, they both stopped dead in their tracks. As they stared ahead, they saw none other than Becky standing in front of the car with her hands folded in front looking straight at them with a confident and almost happy look on her face.
"Wow, speaking of the devil" Dean replied.
Soon Becky advanced towards them with the same expression on her face. "Well, it's about time you guys showed up. But seriously we need to talk" was all she said.
