Chapter 57 What About Ben?

Dean still looked stunned as he looked straight into the face of the young pickpocket who he had witnessed stealing an elderly man's wallet and now had grabbed a whole of him only to recognize the boy's face. It had been none other than Ben the son of his old girlfriend Lisa Braeden only five years older now a teenage boy close to his height who was now staring back at him with no recognition at all of who he was.

"Ben, what the hell?" Dean replied again.

Ben only kept looking at him confused as he didn't remember him at all.

"What do I know you?" he replied still looking confused.

Before Dean could answer, the old man interrupted their reunion.

"Hey, that little punk stole my wallet!" he cried out.

Dean briefly took his eye off of Ben and glanced at the old man really quick and that was all the time Ben needed to give him a quick kick in the shin causing Dean to let go in yelp in pain as he just ran off down the sidewalk as fast as he could go and out of sight.

"Are you alright Dean?" Ava asked concerned.

"Yeah, it was nothing that I can't handle" Dean told her.

"You know that young man, you called him Ben" Ava replied looking confused herself.

"Yeah, I did, and I will explain it to you later" he told her.

Just then the old man walked up to them. "Sorry that young punk got away, he took my wallet, I'm going to call police" he said as he pulled out his iPhone from his pants pocket, but Dean quickly stopped him.

"Hey, look I know that kid, and I assure you he isn't bad just ran into bad company. I'll make a deal with you, I get the wallet back for you, and you don't press any charges?" Dean pleaded with him.

"And why should I trust you, if you know him like you said, you could be helping him" the old man said.

"Hey, if I was helping him would I alert you that he was stealing and try to stop him, I just didn't recognize him right away but I assure you sir, I will track him down and get that wallet and turn it over to either the police or you personally, I only beg that you don't press any charges afterwards, I want to help that kid get to turn over a new leaf, he wasn't always like that he was a good kid once" Dean explained.

The old man looked pretty conflicted. "How can I trust that you will get me back the wallet. I still don't know for sure if you won't just help that kid instead" he told him.

Dean just sighed. "Look sir, just give me a day and if you haven't had your wallet back by then, you can press charges if you want to, I'll even give you my name, it's Dean Winchester and I'll give you my number and the address where I'm staying and if you'll worried that I'll help that kid get out of town, then I will personally pay you back anything that was taken" he said.

"He will, he keeps his word, I assure you" Ava who had been silent this whole time replied.

The old man still looked hesitant. "I don't know" he said.

Then Dean pulled out his own wallet and took out his driver's license. "Hey, look sir, here's my license, I'm giving it to you to hold, I wouldn't skip town without my license, consider this leverage until this whole thing is resolved" he told the old man and handed him his license.

The old man still looked conflicted about all of this.

"Hey, please sir, I don't want this kid's life ruined over stupid mistakes now, I'm sure I can get through to him and if I don't within a day, do whatever you wish and leave me to pay for everything you lost, you got my word on that" Dean told him.

"Please sir, he's telling the truth" Ava added.

Finally, the old man sighed. "Well, I have a grandson around that kid's age, and I wouldn't want his life ruined over a mistake and would hope somebody would try to get through to him if he ever got himself into some serious trouble" he said he reached for Dean's license and took it putting it in his pants pocket. "Besides, if I hang on to your license, I don't have to worry about you skipping town with that kid or something" he told Dean.

Dean sighed in relief then he gave the old man his cell phone number, Ava even took out a pen and a pad of paper she carries in her purse and wrote down his number and with another pad she wrote down Madame Bess's address.

"Look, I'm holding you to this mister, I'll give you until tomorrow to get back my wallet and I won't press charges and if not, I'll also hold you to your word that you will pay me what that kid has stolen" said the old man.

"Thank you, sir" Dean said to him.

The old man then gave his name Bill Eisenberg and gave him his cell phone number and they then said their goodbyes and parted ways. Afterwards, it was Ava's turn to grill Dean.

"Okay Dean, who the hell was that kid and how do you know him?" she asked him.

Dean just turned to her and said, "We really have to talk but first I also need to call Sam and the others" he told her.

He then pulled out his phone and called Sam who was no longer at the coffee shop but taking a stroll around town with Gwen. He told him to meet him and Ava back at the van as it is urgent leaving Sam a bit scared thinking it had something to do with supernatural stuff which they knew could happen sometimes. Sam and Gwen arrived within ten minutes as Sam went over to Dean worried.

"Okay, Dean what is this all about that was so urgent?" he asked him as Gwen went over to Ava to ask her the same question.

"Look man, you won't believe it but let's just say I just ran into a familiar face right here on the street" he told him.

"Who, is it an old an enemy of ours, should we be worried?" Sam asked still worried.

"Not exactly, it was Ben, Sam" Dean said looking really serious.

"What?" Sam replied like he couldn't believe it.

"It was Ben, Ben Braeden, you remember Ben" Dean said again as looked right into Sam's eyes.

"Ben in Lisa's kid?" Sam asked.

"Yeah, only he isn't a little kid anymore, he's a almost a man" Dean told him.

Sam continued to look in disbelief. "What Ben, what the hell is he doing here of all places?" Sam asked eagerly.

Dean just shrugged his shoulders.

"Beats me, but the thing is I just saw him mug some poor old bastard even had him for a moment before I knew who he was, but he got away and took off and I was able to convince the old dude to hold off calling the police promising I will find him first and make him give back his wallet" Dean said.

"Hey, this is the Ben, you told me about before, your old flame Lisa's Ben, that who that kid was?" Ava who had been quiet finally spoke up.

Dean turned to her and nodded his head. "Yeah, that's him alright" he told her.

"Yeah, you mentioned a Ben and Lisa who Dean was with for a while too as I recall" Gwen said to Sam.

"Of all the people to run into in this big city is your ex's kid" Ava replied,

"And he was stealing from folks" she went on. "What Ben is this city and he's mugging folks, I still don't believe it" Sam said.

"Look I don't know what kind of trouble Ben is gotten himself into but he's no criminal and I gotta find him and get him turn that wallet in" Dean said.

"And then what Dean?" Sam asked.

"I don't know but I'll try to help him in anyway first figure out what he is doing here and where the heck is Lisa" Dean said.

They didn't want to continue discussing Ben outside, so they all agreed to get in the van and head back to the house, but first Dean phoned Adam and Charlie who had left the arcade and got some hot dogs to eat. Adam told them where they were and soon Dean picked him and Charlie up and then they all headed back to Madame Bess's house. She still wasn't home, but Gwen still had her key to the house, and they all went in.

Dean told Adam and Charlie some of the story on the drive back to the house and they were shocked too, as Charlie only knew about them from reading the Supernatural books and Adam knew very little as Dean never told him much about Lisa and Ben. Back at the house, they all went into the living room where Dean told everybody much more to the story and about the last time he saw Ben and Lisa five years ago when he and Lisa had broken up and were moving on from each other when Crowley's goons kidnapped them even murdered Lisa's new boyfriend and who a demon possessed Lisa forcing Dean to exorcise her and how she got injured and nearly died as a result.

Then Castiel showing up at the hospital and healing them on his request and then erasing their memories of him altogether. It was still a painful memory for him and everybody could see it as they were the closet thing he had of an real family and he clearly never forget them even if he hardly ever spoke of them. Seeing Ben after all this time just brought it all back to him and everybody could see how hard it was for him to think about them, the pain of losing them and now he's sees Ben, the kid who was like to a son to him about one time back only he's a full-grown teenager and doesn't even remember him.

The others were curious what he looks like, and Ava remembered that she had taken a photo of him with her phone while Dean had briefly detained him. She had done it on impulse just in case the description of his appearance was necessary. She pulled her phone out of her purse and showed them the photo and they all looked at the now teenage Ben who looked all rugged. Dean still wasn't over his appearance, unshaven, holes in jeans and worn-out sneakers that reminded him of those homeless youths that wander around especially in big cities.

"I'll tell you Ben really looked like a street kid, like he was just living on the streets, and he actually stole from that old man and where the heck is Lisa doing all of this" Dean wondered.

"Do you think she and Ben moved here?" Ava asked. Dean shook his head.

"No, they had just moved to from Indiana to Michigan, it was a new start for them. Moving there was hard enough on Ben and a big step for her; moving away from what he was used to new surroundings, I don't picture Lisa moving away again ripping him away from another place that he got used" Dean said. She even told that leaving Indiana behind was the hardest thing to do and she doesn't want to pack up again as it would be too much for Ben" he told them.

"Okay then, is it possible Ben ran away?" Sam suggested.

"Ben run away from his mom, no way, he loved his mom, they had a good relationship, he would never do that" Dean said.

"How would you know, it's been a long time since you last seen him, maybe his relationship with his mother changed since then, you never know" said Ava.

"I do know, Ben would never hurt his mom like that" Dean said sternly.

"But you also didn't think he would steal from an old man either. Face it, Dean, Ben isn't same little boy you knew, he's a teenager and obviously living a destructive life if he's stealing from people" Ava said.

"I'm afraid I will have to agree with Ava on this Dean. We haven't seen Ben in years, we don't know what he's like now and from what you told us, he seems to be in trouble. I mean if Lisa isn't here in St. Paul either, that means Ben likely ran away from home and is living on the streets" Sam told him.

Dean just looked conflicted and sighed.

"Look, all I know I don't believe whatever he's not a bad kid, maybe he just got in over his head in something, but I won't just turn my back on him. Now that I know he's here, I can help him in whatever trouble he's in. I promised that old dude that I will get his wallet back so all I need to do is find him and convince him to do the right thing and help get out of any mess he's in" he said in a determined tone.

"Look, we're with you if you want to help Ben, but like I said before, it's been years since you last seen him, he may not want help or to be saved, you got to be at least prepared for that" Ava said.

"Yeah Dean, what if Ben may not exactly welcome you to be his savior, this could backfire on you really bad, don't want you getting your hopes too high" Sam added.

"Hey, I'm aware of all that but that doesn't mean I just give up on him already, does it?" Dean cried out feeling frustrated.

"No, hey that's not what we're saying" Sam replied.

"All we're saying is you got to be careful and be prepared that it may not end up what you want, and if it's true he ran away from home, he might run off again and may not want to be found" Ava added.

"Besides Dean, he doesn't remember you. You haven't forgotten that the last time you saw him and his mother, you had Cas wiped away all their memories of you, he didn't even recognize you when you saw him today as you told us" Sam replied.

"I'm aware he doesn't know who I am, but I will find a way to work around that, I'll think of something" Dean said.

"Hey, just curious, you said you last saw Ben in the hospital when you went in to visit him and his mother after having Cas take away all their memories of you. Well, how come Ben didn't recognize you as the stranger who visited them?" Adam asked.

"Well, you know Adam that was five years ago, I dropped in to see them very briefly. To them, I was just some stranger, so it would make sense that Ben wouldn't recognize me, not some stranger who only paid a short visit. I know I don't remember everybody that I briefly met five years ago" Dean told him.

"Okay how are you going to find him, this is a large city, and you don't know where to look?" asked Charlie.

"Well, I was hoping that's where Gwen here comes in" Dean said turning to Gwen.

"Me, I wouldn't know where to find this kid" Gwen said.

"But maybe you have an idea where people from the streets hang out, please think Gwen it's important" Dean said.

Gwen thought for a moment then had a look like a lightbulb just went up over her head.

"Gwen, do you have any idea?" Sam asked her.

"I can't be sure, but I did here there has been a problem with a lot of homeless folks in downtown area and there has been mentioning of a number of street kids possible runaways or kids who don't have anywhere to go" Gwen said.

"That's perfect do you know where?" Dean asked.

Gwen just looked like she was thinking but then shook her head.

"I don't know for sure where they go to but possible in some of those abandoned buildings at least the street kids that is, I remember reading in the news in another city that the police raided an abandoned place where they picked up a lot of homeless kids who were squatting there and those are the usually place these kids would go to, that's all I know" Gwen told him.

"Well, summons much, all we had to do is track down every abandoned building in the city" Charlie said.

"But it's a start, thanks Gwen" Dean told her and she smiled.

"Yeah, you are quite the help" Sam said as he had his arm around her in cozy way.

"Do you by any chance know where to find all the abandoned buildings in the city?" Dean asked her.

Gwen shook her head.

"I wish I could tell you for sure, but I've never been in those areas sorry, maybe you could ask my grandmom when she gets back" she said.

"We can't wait that long, I need to find Ben right away, still got until the tomorrow to get that wallet back that he stole" Dean said impatiently.

"Wait a minute, we can just search the internet for the locations" Gwen said.

"Yeah, we do that all the time to search for locations just google it" Sam said.

"Perfect, where's your computer or laptop?" Dean asked urgently.

"Hey, you have your laptop in your room" Sam reminded Gwen.

"Yeah, I'll go get it right now, just hold on" she said and then she left the room and headed up the stairs.

Within a minute, she is walking down the stairs with a laptop in her hand. Then they headed for the dining room where she plugged up the intension cord to place the laptop on the table as she sat down and turned it on. The others just stood over her as she googled abandoned buildings in Saint Paul and saw photos of a numerous buildings and then googled the map of these buildings to find the locations. Sam decided to take over and study the locations while Gwen went upstairs to again to get a sheet of people from a notebook and came back with that and a pen. She gave the paper and pen to Sam, and he decided to write down the list of buildings in Lowertown first since they were their when Dean and Ava ran into Ben.

He then wrote down the locations and then instructed Ava to take the laptop upstairs to the study to attach the printer on and print out the map and she did as instructed within moments. Afterwards, Gwen came down with a printed-out sheet of the map and they Sam and Dean studied the map and down the directions to locations on the back of the paper.

"Okay, we got to check out these places, they're right in Lowertown and I'm sure Ben is in one of these buildings for sure" Dean said.

"Yeah, I think it's best to head out right now" Sam said.

"I can with you guys, I like to help and besides, I have a photo of him on my phone, we could use it to ask around" Ava said.

Dean just nodded his head.

"Yeah, I agree, the three of us will search all over that place and ask around" Dean said.

"You know Dean, some of who we run into maybe street folks who may not feel too comfortable talking to us" Sam reminded him.

"Hey, not to worry, just offer them enough money and those folks will squeal like a canary. By the way do you got enough cash on you?" Dean asked.

"Yeah, I think so how about you?" Sam asked him right back.

"I got enough I hope" he told him.

"And I got some cash too" Ava told him.

"You know guys, we can help you search too, maybe all of us, I mean six is better than three" Gwen suggested.

"Yeah, I'm for it how about you Adam?" Charlie asked.

"Hey sure, I mean since this Ben kid is important to you Dean, we're all willing to help" Adam replied.

"Look, I appreciate the sentiment but, I think it's best just me, Sam and Ava go. I mean, Ben will probably freak out enough seeing us, but having group of people looking for him, folks he doesn't know will probably freak him out even more. I just think the less adults confronting him the better" Dean told them.

"Dean's right you all, it's better if it's just us three, don't need to make him feel like a posse is after him" Sam said.

"Okay if that's how you feel about it" Charlie said.

"Yeah, you guys can wait here and fill Madame Bess in on our recent discovery" Dean instructed them.

"Will do, just wish I could use my psychic ability to help but I haven't gotten any visions and only grandmom has the ability to track him down talking to the spirits" Gwen said.

"That's okay, I'm sure we can find him ourselves hopefully, wish we had time to perform a tracking spell, but we don't have the ingredients with us, so we gotta do this the old-fashioned way" Dean said.

"Okay Dean, we better do this right now, already" Sam replied.

"On it, let's go Ava" Dean replied turning to her and within moments, Ava had grabbed her purse, and they were all heading out the door.

"Hey good luck, hope you all find him" Gwen said.

"Don't worry we will, at least I hope we will" Sam said.

The three hunters said their goodbyes to the others and headed out the door. They all jumped into Ava's van with Dean deciding to drive with Sam holding the map and directions to the buildings in the Lowertown and they drove off out of the driveway into the street on their new mission to find Ben, and Dean just prays if and when he finds him, he'll be able to find out what's going with his life that led up to him stealing from an old man and that he'll be able to help with any problems he has. That is the most important thing to right as this moment and he won't let anything get in his way.
