Leo

It had been a few weeks since the twins had arrived, and it was nearing the end of the summer holidays. Everything had been going shockingly well, until one morning I caught a familiar scent, while sitting at the breakfast table.

"You didn't," I hissed at Lisbet, and she shrugged only slightly sheepishly.

"I did." I glared at her, and she frowned. "I asked, and she agreed." I sighed sharply, wondering if one could feel grey hairs being created, and jabbed a finger at the twins.

"You two, out!" They moved to get up but my father stopped them, dropping a hand on both of their shoulders.

"Leo, this needs to be done."

"No. Not her."

He frowned at the desperate tone in my voice. "She'll be perfectly safe, Leo."

"But what if she isn't?" I asked quietly, before sighing again- distinctly more defeated, this time. "Alright." I turned my eyes to the Twins. "You'd better hope you can handle this," I told them before exiting the house. "Damsel," I greeted as I reached her, some distance away, and she jumped.

"Dammit, Leo..." She muttered, even though I could see the small, begrudgingly amused smile on her lips.

"You shouldn't have agreed to this," I said, getting straight to the point, and she rolled her eyes.

"Lisbet guaranteed me that I would be safe. Do you think I will be?"

I hesitated for a second. "The Twins have adjusted somewhat to human blood, and we'll be able to stop them if they lose control." I paused, giving Elaine the opportunity to eye me with one eyebrow raised. "You'll be completely safe," I admitted reluctantly.

"See? I made the right choice, stop freaking out." Her eyebrows furrowed. "They aren't actually twins, are they?" I laughed quietly, shaking my head.

"Nah, we just call them that." She nodded, and soon- too soon, for my liking- we reached the house.

"Is it weird that I'm more nervous about meeting them than them trying to eat me?" I shrugged.

"Probably. I mean, they are vampires."

Elaine slipped her hand into mine and I squeezed it, smiling. "We'll be fine," She said, but it sounded more like she was trying to reassure herself more than me.

"Of course we will," I said. "Three full vampires and a half-vampire against two newbies? They don't stand a chance." She beamed at me, trying to pretend she wasn't terrified. "Oh! Three and a half vampires!" She shot me a look that was half odd, half fond, before we both sobered as I got closer and closer to guiding her into the chair across from the Twins, who were staring at her rather intensely.

"Hello," She mumbled, but they remained silent; after a few seconds, Jo leapt up, disappearing out the back door. Danniel blinked furiously, eyes fixed on Elaine's throat, mouth clamped shut with his upper lips rolled over his fangs as if that might help him quell the urge to take a chunk out of her- I knew from experience, it didn't. A few more seconds passed before he jumped up, too- but instead of leaving, he launched himself at Elaine.

Of course, my father grabbed him by the scruff of his neck, rolling his eyes at Danniel's futile attempts to struggle against his grip. "Newbies..." He muttered, loudly enough for Elaine to hear, even as he dragged Danniel outside.

"See?" I asked tensely; weakly. "Perfectly safe."

(A/N): So, what did you think?

I personally think Leo would have at least beaten the crap out of Danniel if he had laid a finger on Elaine. Seriously. If not killed him.

This chapter has had edits made to it on 7/2/25 - formatting and reconfiguring of sentences. Added the part about Leo wondering if one could feel grey hairs being created (you can't, I woke up one morning, looked in the mirror and went, 'oh, my first grey hair'. Then five minutes later I was going, 'oh, my 27th grey hair', because apparently once I started noticing them, I couldn't stop). Added Leo saying his sigh was 'distinctly more defeated, this time'. I added the 'Oh! Three and a half vampires!' part, because I was like, 'damn, I missed my opportunity', then went, 'no I didn't', and added it, because that's definitely the sort of dumb 'joke' that later Leo would make. Added the part about Danniel's upper lips being rolled over his fangs (since originally he had his mouth slightly open, which... doesn't entirely make sense), and the fact that Leo says he knows from experience that that doesn't help quell the urge to take a chunk out of someone (in this scenario, it's Elaine, who I do think Leo has struggled not to bite in the past, but he means it generally, in this instance).
