Leo

I was sitting at the dinner table later that night when Shari froze. A second or two later, my father appeared next to me, and, honing my hearing, I heard far off footsteps fast approaching. "Vampires," My father hissed, and the twins heads snapped up, only now hearing them.

"Get up and get ready," I ordered them, rushing to the weapons chest in the middle of the sitting room. Throwing it open, I rifled through the weapons, handing out stakes to each of us before grabbing a machete- a chopping weapon was always the second best choice after a stake when dealing with enemy vampires. Without a second of hesitation, we all used vampire speed in order to reach the middle of the yard.

"This would be a lot easier with Lisbet here," Danniel muttered, but I shook my head- I'd already weighed the odds myself, and knew my father and Shari had clearly come to similar conclusions.

"She's too far away. If they knew she was there, they'd just gang up on her."

We all stood in formation, protecting each other's backs and flanks, but then my father growled, lips parting so he could bare his fangs. "What? What's wrong?" Jo asked, but after taking a sniff for myself, I knew exactly what was wrong.

"Jonothan," I uttered darkly, scowling, and Shari stiffened beside me like she was having to physically counteract the urge to wrap an arm around me.

"Who-?" Danniel was cut off as the group of vampires entered the open lawn.

"Nicholai!" Jonothan called out, extending his arms as if for a hug. "My baby brother." The twins gaped at my father and uncle, and he turned his attention on them like a weapon. I found I didn't like it almost as much as if it truly were one. "What's this? More bastard children?" He was obviously trying- and failing- to make witty banter, because any idiot with vampire senses could tell that they weren't related.

"What do you want, Jonothan?" My father growled, and Jonothan smirked.

"Much like everyone else, Nicholai, I want the boy."

He narrowed his eyes at me, and the next thing I knew, the twins were pushing me behind them. "Lay a hand on him and die," Jo hissed, face slipping into Sensory Alert, and I felt oddly touched that they hadn't just opted to give me up to the much stronger, older vampire. He might even let them live if they had.

"I've already laid a hand on him," Jonothan said, smirking, and my eyebrows furrowed in confusion. "Where I knew none of you could stop me." And that's when it dawned on me.

"King's cross," I murmured, and my father eyes flicked back at me like he couldn't help himself. Couldn't help checking on me, making sure I was okay- physically, because emotionally, I certainly wasn't.

"Sometimes you're too smart for your own good Leonides."

I stared at him, completely incredulous. "I thought that was my mother," I muttered, not being able to find it within me to speak any louder, and knowing he would hear it anyway. "You drugged me." Jonothan shrugged lightly, looking unbearably proud of himself.

"I did. I was going to make you slaughter your little friends, and then, in your last moment of stunning clarity, pitch you off the astronomy tower." My father let out a long, low growl, and Jonothan raised an eyebrow at his brother, faking a look of surprise that didn't go nearly far enough to cover his smug amusement. "Control yourself, Nicholai," He said, pouting slightly as though he was offended by my father's 'lack of civility'.

"Why are you here, Jonothan?!" He hissed, and Jonothan chuckled in a way that put me on edge with it's nonchalance. As though this was something he did every day, rather than something that could change- or end- lives.

"I'm here to kill you and your boy, and anyone else who gets in my way."

Shari and the twins let out low growls, and I slipped into Sensory Alert. "Bring it on, Uncle."

There was five of us, and six of them; outnumbered, even when you didn't count in age/strength ratio. As the other vampires launched themselves at us, I saw Jonothan slink back to wait the battle out- five to five. I focused on the blonde vampire coming at me, using my legs to propel myself into the air. I grabbed her around the waist, yanking her to the ground where she struck hard, and swung the machete down at her; she let out a screech as she blocked it with her hands, blood splattering the both of us. I felt hands grab me around the waist and threw my head back to make contact with theirs. The blonde vampire was back on her feet in an instant, and with the second vampire still holding me off the ground with their grip on my waist, I dropped the machete and struck out with the stake. She stood stock still for a second, wood spike protruding from her chest before her gaze fell to it, and only then did her body crumple to the ground.

Not having time to be preoccupied with the death I had just caused, I kicked out at the vampire behind me before I felt hands pry their arms away from my waist. Glancing around, I saw Jo and Danniel taking care of a vampire by themselves, Shari was the one who had saved me from being squished by Mr Huggable, and my father was fighting a vamp on the other side of the lawn, and I quickly leapt onto the vampire that was sneaking up on him.

As I pinned the vampire to the ground, I glanced up to see how my dad was doing, smiling as I saw him standing above the now staked foe- it looked like we might just be winning- his eyes met mine, and as they did, blood suddenly splattered my face. I saw his chest soaked with blood where it hadn't been just a split second before, and as he sunk to his knees, stake protruding from his chest, I saw Jonothan standing behind him.

This chapter has had minor edits made to it on 31/12/22 - This is the chapter where Jonothan reveals that he was the one who used spharmus to control Leo and make him attack his friends, instead of Cipicia like it was assumed.

This chapter has had edits made to it on 3/1/25 - formatting and reconfiguring of sentences. Changed Leo's growl to the twins to an order. Added Leo's tidbit about a machete- a chopping weapon- being the second best weapon to choose when facing a vampire, after a wooden stake. Added the part about Leo having weighed the odds and assuming he came to a similar conclusion as Nicholai and Shari. Added the part about the Ellwood Clan standing in formation to protect each other's backs and flanks, since originally, they were just standing there 'completely still' which... didn't really make sense. Added Leo saying that the reason Shari stiffened was because she was having to stop herself from wrapping an arm around him to comfort him. Added the part about Jonothan's attention turning to the twins 'like a weapon', and Leo disliking it just as much as if it truly were one. Added the little insert about Jonothan failing to make witty banter, because that definitely is a fail, but Leo didn't designate it as such originally. Added Leo saying Jonothan 'might even let them (the Twins) live' if they had given him up, which shows it wasn't a guarantee, at least in Leo's eyes. Nicholai originally 'glanced back' at Leo, but I had his eyes flick back like he couldn't help but check on him, instead. Which means I also added the part about Leo admitting he wasn't okay, emotionally. Added Leo 'not being able to speak any louder, and knowing Jonothan would hear it anyway'. Added Jonothan looking 'unbearably' proud of himself, since we all know he's a smug son of a bitch. Speaking of which, added Leo's description of Jonothan 'faking a look of surprise that didn't go nearly far enough to cover his smug amusement'. Added Leo's description that Jonothan's pout was because he was 'offended by Nicholai's lack of civility'. Added Leo being put off by Jonothan's casual chuckle, and the part about changing or ending lives. Added the 'it looked like we might just be winning' comment, just to make what happened next hit that much harder.
