Spider-Man & The X-Men: Dreams & Nightmares
Author's Note: I'm back with chapter 9! And thankfully, it didn't take too long to update this fic, lol. I appreciate everyone who continues to read and support this story. Y'all are the best! As always, I'll reply to some reviews before we officially get started.
duckboio: For the timeline question, I'll say it's currently somewhere before the events of X-Men '97. Some events will kinda stay the same with Spider-Man present, but for the most part, I'm putting my own twist/remix on things to make sure this story can be fresh. While this story is clearly taking place within the 90's Spider-Man and X-Men Animated Universe, I don't want to repeat all of the events/episodes we already know, despite how good the shows are (especially in X-Men '97's case since it's PEAK fiction, lol). If I repeated the same events, this story would only serve as a recap, and at that point, you guys would be better off by simply watching the original shows!
NeoTyson: Gambit definitely has his own motivations when it comes to helping Peter try to find MJ. And yes, the appearance of Dark Phoenix means disaster is coming!
CRUDEN: It is not good at all, my friend. They are all in big trouble!
TaitanoRules555: Lots of reviews to reply to here, so I'll try my best to fit it all in one big response! After looking back on it, the emotional moment for both Spidey and Rogue in chapter 1 may have been a bit early, so I definitely know what you're talking about there. And as you already know, Deadpool is definitely a recurring character. I do plan on having Gambit go through an arc of some sorts, so that should be fun. In fact, every character should be getting their own arc. As for the length of this fic, I will say that this is going to be a long one. How long? I have no idea, but I do have a lot of concept ideas in my head. Next, for the question about me writing longer chapters in the future, I think you'll be happy about this one, since this particular chapter has over 5,000 words. Honestly, that's the length I want to be at, but life restricts me from consistently doing it. And finally, thank you for the kind words!
And that's all the reviews! To all of my MARVELous readers, (See what I did there? Eh? Eh? …Yeah, I'll see myself out.) make sure to leave a review, and I'll reply to it in the next chapter. Chapter 9 begins now!

Things were not going well, and that might be the understatement of the century. Everything happened so quickly too. One moment, some of the X-Men and Spider-Man were bonding by singing together, and then not even a few moments later, they found themselves trying to not have a crash-landing right in the middle of New Jersey. Yep, life moves pretty fast. If you don't stop and look around once in a while, you could miss it. This quote is something Deadpool would probably reference by breaking the fourth wall, but that's neither the here nor there.
If things couldn't get any weirder, the X-Men and Spider-Man got engulfed by Jean's flames, and the only thing that followed afterwards was a black explosion. Under normal circumstances for regular people, they'd usually be dead. But this… this was a different case.
Instead of being in New Jersey, Spider-Man and the X-Men found themselves in an entirely different place. It took a moment for everyone to realize this, but that doesn't mean they shouldn't have questions.
"Is everybody okay?" Spider-Man asked, taking a look at the X-Men.
"Never been better, Bub." replied Wolverine, his voice being unenthusiastic while trying to grasp the situation they were in. "But where the heck are we?"
Rogue looked around, taking note of the seemingly endless abyss they were in. She soon sighed, while adding, "Your guess is as good as mine."
"There's no way we're not dead, right?" Deadpool brought up. "I mean, we're literally in some never-ending abyss."
Gambit rolled his eyes. "You always know what to say, Deadpool." Sarcasm was clearly in his voice.
"I try my best," Deadpool responded, feeling rather proud of himself.
As for Cyclops, it didn't take long for him to figure out that something else was wrong. Everybody was here… Except Jean. "Where's Jean?!" he exclaimed, becoming worried about his wife's whereabouts. "Jean!" shouted Cyclops, but the only thing that replied to him were his echoes.
Wolverine gritted his teeth, as he was visibly becoming more and more frustrated with this whole thing, especially since nobody knows where Jean is. "I don't know what's goin' on, but we need to start gettin' some answers around here!"
"And how do you suppose we do that?" Deadpool countered. "I don't know if you've noticed, but uh… We're the only ones here!"
Once again, Wolverine and Deadpool were getting into an argument, but Spider-Man did his best to ignore the ridiculousness. However, while doing so, he started to get an eerie feeling, and the best way to describe it was he was getting a cold shiver running down his spine. Then, Spider-Man started to feel various things. Not just with him, but with everyone around him. "Guys, guys! I'd appreciate it if you could stop arguing and let me concentrate!" Obviously, he was annoyed at Wolverine's and Deadpool's constant bickering. This got the two to shut up, allowing Spider-Man to try to figure out what the heck was going on.
Spider-Man crouched down, placing his hand onto the center of the abyss, which naturally got the attention of the X-Men. "Uh, Spider? What are you doing?" Gambit questioned, crossing his arms.
This caused Spider-Man to shake his head. "I… honestly don't know." Our hero was truthful with his words. "I can't really explain it, but it's like this abyss is calling to me somehow."
"Callin' to you?" Rogue repeated, as Spider-Man gave a confirming nod.
Deadpool felt the need to say something here, and he would go on to break the 4th wall. "To all the readers who are reading this story, this is the author's way of telling us that Spidey is the main character."
After that, the X-Men would remain silent and let Spider-Man keep doing whatever the heck he was doing. Within the center of the abyss, a bright light began to form, and as a result, the abyss actually started to resemble something. What was it starting to resemble, you may ask?
A literal graveyard.
All of the X-Men's eyes widened at this sight, but the abyss' progression didn't stop there. When the group looked up, they were now able to see a creepy red and black colored sky that was surrounded by flames. Due to the fire, the environment around them quickly became very hot. Sounds of blood-curdling screams were coming from the graves of the dead, serving as a representation of what they sounded like before inevitably reaching their permanent end.
"Oh my God…" Cyclops managed to say, as he still couldn't believe what he was hearing. The horror, the terrifying cries for help before death, there was so much to grasp all at once. But then… there was a sound that could be heard close by. Another cry for help, but this one… was different. Analyzing the area, Cyclops managed to find the source of the sound, and to his surprise, he saw a baby who was all by himself.
Cyclops didn't know why, but he felt the need to protect the baby, regardless of simply being part of the X-Men. There was a connection he had with the baby that he couldn't fully explain. Thus, he ran to the baby and gently picked it up, doing his best to calm it down. "Shhh, shhh. It's okay, it's okay. You're safe now." Cyclops softly told him. "I'm not going to let anything happen to you."
Unfortunately, the sweet moment between Cyclops and the baby would be the only good thing to happen within this unknown land of madness. Spider-Man, who still had his hand within the center, was making sure he didn't miss anything. Although, that could only go on for so long, and as the bright light in the center of the area only grew with each passing second, waves of memories started to hit Spider-Man like a truck.
BGM: Spider-Man TAS 1994 – Late at Night
"You're gonna kill me like you killed my father?"
"I'm done trying to convince you."
"Remember… A warrior keeps his friends close, and his enemies closer!"
"Face it, Tiger! You just hit the jackpot!"
"NO! Where did she go?! Mary Jane! MARY JAAAAAAANE!"
"What's wrong, Spider-Man? No quick comebacks? No clever one-liners?"
"You'll pay, Osborn! IF I HAVE TO CHASE YOU FOREVER, YOU'LL PAAAAAAAY!"
"When you help someone, you help everyone."
"Remember, Peter... With great power, comes great responsibility."
With all of these flashbacks hitting Spider-Man at once, it caused him to immediately clutch to his head and yell out in pain. It made him completely fall to his knees, being unable to do anything to try to overcome the traumatic events that's happened throughout his lifetime.
"Peter!" shouted Rogue, running to his side while trying her best to comfort him. She knelt down to where he was, clearly being worried for him.
And then, everything would get interrupted by a familiar voice.
"Poor Peter Parker."
The X-Men all turned around to see who this could be, but by the voice, they could already tell who it was… For better or worse.
It was no one other than Jean Grey, and with one singular movement of her hand, the ground beneath Spider-Man and the X-Men started to crack. And in those same cracks, lava shot out of them like an erupting volcano.
"No mother. No father. No uncle. No Harry. No Mary Jane." Jean's voice was unusually menacing and cold. "All alone. But do you want to know the worst part?" she paused, before saying, "You're supposed to be some kind of hero, yet you can't even save the people you love. What type of hero is that?" Jean's words were echoing in Peter's mind. "Maybe if you were good enough, you could've actually saved them!"
"Jean, stop it!" Cyclops pleaded, still carrying the baby while trying to fully fathom how Jean wasn't acting like herself. "This isn't you! I know this isn't you!"
Jean rolled her eyes. "Oh, Scott. It's truly a shame how little you know about your own wife."
Wolverine growled, feeling the need to speak on this matter. "I don't know what type of sick game somebody is playing right now, but I know this ain't you, Red!" he declared, before saying, "I refuse to believe any of this is real! I know none of this is real!"
Wolverine being in denial about everything caught Jean's attention, and it caused the woman to form an unsettling smirk on her face. "Do you really know?" she replied, wanting Wolverine to doubt himself on whether or not this whole thing was real in the first place. "I don't think you know what's real, Logan, and that could go for everybody else. But don't worry. I'm sure all of you will be able to tell if the pain is real, though."
Saying this, Jean extended her arm, and within mere moments, Spider-Man wasn't the only one going through traumatic flashbacks anymore. They were all screaming in complete utter agony, proceeding to remember specific quotes from their pasts.

"Hands itching… What have you done to me?!"
"My own flesh and blood! A mutant!"
"Daddy, please!"
"You're a disgrace! I'm ashamed to be seen with ya! Ya ain't my daughter! Not anymore!"
"Alex! Alex, where are you?!"
"Your heart may beat for me! But I can't feel it! You… You light up everything you touch, but never me…"
"I now realize I've never experienced happiness. I put on a good show, but… I simply don't know the meaning of the word. …And I never will."
"Make… it… STOP!" Rogue exclaimed, trying her hardest to fight through the pain, but it was proving to be more difficult than she ever could've imagined.
"I think we're in hell!" yelled Deadpool, not wanting to go through this any longer.
"Gambit don't like this one bit!" said Gambit, falling to his knees.
"J-Jean!" Spider-Man began, slamming his fist into the ground as a frustrated response to the amount of torture not only he was going through, but what everybody else was going through too. "I don't know what's happened to you, but you have to fight it!" He has to get through to her somehow, right? "We're your friends!"
For a split second, due to Peter's pleas, Jean realized what she was doing. She looked at everyone, and clear horror had struck her face. But just as quickly as it came, her menacing face returned within a matter of seconds. "Don't bother trying to save me, Peter. You've already proven that you're not good at saving others." she paused, as a frightening grin appeared on her face. "In fact, it makes me believe that you should owe somebody an apology!"
Moving her hands once more, the graveyard started to glow, and on one particular grave, somebody was seemingly rising from the dead. A hand had shot up, serving as the first step of the reveal before the person's body rose out of the dirt. And when Peter saw this person, he couldn't believe his eyes.
It was no one other than Uncle Ben, and his appearance resembled a creepy zombie-like corpse.
"Peter, Peter, Peter… I'm so disappointed in you." Uncle Ben shook his head in disgust. "I had such high hopes for you too. How can one man have all the power in the world, but yet continue to find ways to fail in every aspect of life?"
BGM: The Hobbit - Thorin Fights Azog (Film Version)
Spider-Man was speechless. There's… there's no way any of this could be real, right? It's just like Mysterio's illusions. None of it is real. But even if it isn't real, that doesn't mean the pain is fake. "Uncle Ben… I'm sorry." Spidey's voice, Peter's voice, was getting choked up.
"SORRY DOESN'T CUT IT!" Uncle Ben was irate. "I DIED because of YOU!" These words sent shockwaves throughout the area. "You may not have been the one to pull the trigger, but you ARE the one that allowed it to happen!"
Uncle Ben's words were striking Peter to his core, and unfortunately, the onslaught wasn't done. "And from what I'm able to see, you haven't improved at all since then, given the fact that the X-Men have been dragged into your mess." He would keep going. "Maybe it's time for you to finally learn your lesson."
Suddenly, Uncle Ben's body started to disintegrate. Peter could only watch as his uncle's ashes blew away in the wind, not being sure what to think anymore.
Sadly, he didn't have much time to think.
SCREECH!
Peter's Spider-Sense was starting to go crazy, and when he tried to find out why, let's just say it didn't take too long to figure out. Courtesy of Jean, a massive amount of fire was shot directly at the X-Men, and given their condition, they were in no shape whatsoever to dodge the attack. For Peter, everything was starting to move in slow motion. With so many things being on his mind, only one thing mattered right now.
He had to save the X-Men.
He's already lost Uncle Ben, Mary Jane, and Harry.
He refuses to lose anyone else.
"Come on, Peter… Come on, Spider-Man… Come on, Spider-Man… Come on, Spider-Man…" Peter kept telling himself, slowly rising back to his feet. "COME ON, SPIDER-MAN!" Despite all the torture, all the pain, he was finding a way to get back up. He screamed at the top of his lungs, gaining the X-Men's attention.
"P-Peter, what are you doing?!" Rogue yelled, as she and the rest of the X-Men were still stuck.
"Giving my new family a chance to live!" That was Peter's reasoning, and nothing, or rather nobody, could change his mind. Getting in front of the entire group, Peter extended his arms forward, bracing himself for impact.
Rogue didn't like this one bit, but arguably the part that stung the most was she couldn't do anything about it. She felt so helpless. "Don't you dare, Peter! Ya hear me?!"
"He's trying to protect us, Rogue!" Gambit exclaimed, knowing that if he was in Peter's position, he would be doing the same exact thing.
"Peter, stop!" Cyclops shouted.
"Save yourself!" Deadpool added.
"Get outta there, kid!" Wolverine pleaded, but it would fall on deaf ears. The rest of the X-Men were screaming at Peter to get out the way, but…
It was already too late.
BOOM!
As soon as the fire collided with Peter's body, a colossal black and green explosion appeared on the battlefield, and just like how they entered this unknown abyss, they would leave in the same manner.
New Jersey
There was so much to take in. Probably too much, to be honest. After the explosion, the X-Men found themselves back in New Jersey, but what they saw… was nothing but destruction, as the gloomy skies above only served as a representation of the situation they were in. Nearly all of New Jersey looked like a warzone. Hundreds, maybe thousands of people were dead, and for some of the lucky ones that survived, they were being transported to the hospital to get immediate treatment for their injuries. Fire was covering the streets, the buildings, nearly everything you could think of. So many questions, and yet, no answers.
Cyclops fell to his knees, not believing the sight he was seeing. The baby he was also trying to protect had long disappeared at this point. Speaking at a level that was barely audible, he would mutter, "Jean… What have you done…?"
BGM: Yu Yu Hakusho Unreleased Track#47-Kanashimi No Jikai Yokoku
The sounds of multiple ambulances, firetrucks, and people screaming in horror were abundant, much like how they heard the cries for help in the abyss. And as the X-Men reluctantly took all of this in, they soon spotted a familiar red costumed hand that was barely revealing itself under some rubble.
Rogue, who didn't want to waste any time, ran to the rubble, and started removing it with her super strength. "PETER!" Internally and externally, she was freaking out. "No! No no no no no no!" She was hoping that her worst fear about Peter's fate didn't come true. The rest of the X-Men soon helped Rogue with getting rid of the remaining rubble, and once that was done, it revealed Peter's motionless body. His costume was torn from head to toe, showing various amounts of less than desirable cuts all over him. Rogue knelt down and held Peter close to her. "Come on, Peter, please! Say something!" Rogue demanded, but there was no response. With this silence, that's when the tears started to stream down her face, as they would eventually drop onto Peter's body.
Wolverine, being enraged by everything that's happened, sent a scream to the heavens, before kneeling and slamming his fists into the ground. He knew Peter didn't deserve this. It just wasn't right. And the only thing he could do was watch Peter willingly sacrifice himself to save them.
As for Gambit, no matter how he felt about Peter initially, his sacrifice forced him to open his eyes and gain a new level of respect. He now realizes that it never should've came to death to get to this point.
Deadpool looked away, not wanting to see Peter's condition, while Cyclops looked like he was in a trance. It was going to take him a long, long time to wrap his head around everything. Aside from Charles, he was supposed to be the leader of the X-Men, and he feels like a leader should know what to do when things get rough. Alas, it's easier to say what you would do before the moment actually happens, compared to actually living through the moment. Peter's death only proved-
"Come on, guys," a familiar, yet weakened voice said, coughing afterwards. This caused all the X-Men to look down in shock. "I'm not going down that easily…"
BGM: Spider-Man 2002 – Backyard Connection
It was Peter's voice.
Once they all realized Peter had survived, the air became a little lighter in this heavy situation. Then, Rogue went on to hug Peter tightly, not wanting to let go. "Please don't do something like that again, sugah."
Usually, Peter would try to tell a joke to lighten the mood, but considering everything that's happened, maybe saying a joke wouldn't be the best thing to do right now. He would try his best to hug Rogue back with one of his arms, but it was difficult to do so. Even though he survived, it was clear he was still injured.
"Woo! My bestie is alive!" rejoiced Deadpool. "I am now only mildly depressed!"
"I knew you would make it, Bub. Never doubted you for a second." Wolverine told Peter, getting himself together.
"You were just screamin' at the sky literally a minute ago." Gambit reminded, earning a growl from Wolverine.
Cyclops had a sigh of relief. Clearly, he was happy to know Peter was still with them, but it was serving as the only silver lining right now. There was only so much time he was able to celebrate, before noticing that the communicator on his wrist was blinking. Once he accepted the message, he saw that he had gotten something from Beast.
"To my fellow X-Men, please come back to the X-Mansion as soon as possible! I repeat, please come back to the X-Mansion as soon as possible!"
The voice message ended there, and Cyclops pinched the bridge of his nose in frustration. "This would happen when the Blackbird gets destroyed…"
Deadpool raised an index finger in the air. "Aha! That's where I come in, my good man! I actually know a guy that'll get us home. Lemme just get my pager." Reaching into his pocket, Deadpool grabbed his pager, proceeding to contact a special friend.
Somewhere else in New Jersey…
BGM: Don Omar - Los Bandoleros
"Be safe out there, Kamala! And tell your family I said hello, will ya?"
The young woman named Kamala got out of the taxi and smiled. "Thanks, Stan. And I'll tell them, don't worry. Excelsior!" she exclaimed, waving goodbye.
"Excelsior!" Stan replied, soon driving off. He thought he would have a little bit of a break, but then he noticed somebody was trying to contact him through his pager. And once he realized who it was, Stan stepped on the gas.
"Hold on, Deadpool! Stan The Man is coming!"
A few moments later…
It didn't take too long for Stan The Man to show up in his taxi. Drifting like an absolute madman, he came to a screeching halt when he saw Deadpool. "Hey, Deadpool! Trying to head back to the X-Mansion again?"
Deadpool pointed finger guns at Stan. "Yup! Hope you don't mind if I bring some friends along for the ride too?"
"Oh, I don't mind at all!" Stan happily confirmed.
Wolverine took one look at the taxi, and another look at how many people were supposed to get in the taxi. It's safe to say things weren't adding up. "Is this big enough?"
Deadpool tried to hold it in, but ultimately, he wasn't able to, and ended up releasing a snort before saying, "That's what she said." He started laughing hysterically, feeling really proud of himself about that joke, but the laughter quickly ended when Wolverine smacked him on the back of his head.
"Idiot." said Wolverine, before the entire group somehow got into the taxi and drove off.
The X-Mansion
Stan The Man had successfully drove the X-Men and Spider-Man to the X-Mansion. Or, well… what was left of it. Once they got out of the taxi, they were stunned by what they saw. Most of the X-Mansion was left in complete ruin. By this time of the day, it was raining, and it only added to the depressing sight.
"Oh, that's not good." Deadpool said, seeing the wrecked X-Mansion.
Once they got past the destroyed gates, they saw Storm and Morph being treated by Beast, while Jubilee was also doing her best to help out in any way she could.
"Morph?!" Wolverine yelled, not expecting to see him here at all.
"Hey, Logan. Would've liked the reunion to happen under better circumstances, but there's nothing I can do about it now." Morph unenthusiastically replied, grimacing a bit.
"What happened, Hank?!" Cyclops asked, wanting to get to the bottom of this.
At first, Beast was unsure how to reply, but he figured the best way to reply would be to simply tell the truth. "We were attacked by Jean. Storm tried her best to hold her off, but she could only last for so long."
Cyclops, the rest of the X-Men, and Spider-Man had to replay what was said to them. "Attacked by Jean? But that's impossible!" Cyclops declared. "She was with us! She… also attacked us too, but there's no way she could've been in two places at the same time!"
"That's what's making this so confusing," Storm managed to say, gritting her teeth as she tried to ignore her pain.
"Gambit thinks we just need to talk to the Professor and see how we move forward." said Gambit, but once this statement was made, he got nothing but silence from Storm, Beast, Jubilee, and Morph.
"Why is everybody so quiet?" Rogue questioned, not liking the vibes. Then, when the silence was extended, she couldn't help but feel something was wrong.
Jubilee would be the one to break the silence. "There was an explosion, and... Well, after it went away… It's like the professor just disappeared. The same thing happened with Jean too." she honestly said. "We don't know where they are. We don't even know if they're still alive."
Well, that was a bombshell that left the rest of the X-Men speechless. As if things couldn't get any crazier, they could indeed get crazier. "This whole entire day has felt like some never-ending nightmare." Wolverine said, not being sure what else to say. Nearly everything that was happening was proving to be the worst-case scenario.
And at this moment, Peter noticed someone was missing. "Where's Aunt May?"
More silence, and this time, it was even more uneasy than before. They didn't know how to tackle this at all, but if anyone was going to try, it was gonna be Beast. "Peter…" He tried to say more, but as high of a vocabulary he has, this was proving to be one of his most difficult tasks yet.
"She's okay, isn't she?" Peter asked, his tone now carrying some form of worry. And as Beast continued to struggle with his explanation, Jubilee began to cry, because she was the one that was assigned to protect Aunt May.
Beast, taking a deep breath, tried his absolute best to explain. "Peter, after the explosion… We found May's body." he paused, not wanting to take his eyes off Peter. "She wasn't responding to anything we did-"
"But she's gonna be alright?" Peter asked, quickly cutting Beast off. His last bits of hope were turning into nothing but denial.
And with Peter's question, Beast could only reply with a nod while saying one word. "No."
BGM: Boyz II Men – It's So Hard To Say Goodbye To Yesterday
Once Peter heard this, he began to cry, while also starting to feel a bevy of emotions hit him all at once. "So… So, you're telling me that my Aunt May is dead?" He was trying to keep it together. "You're telling me that my Aunt May is gone?"
Beast looked away, not wanting to add anything else to the situation. The X-Men didn't know how to deal with this, because Peter has already lost so many people in his life. And now, he's lost the one other person in his life that essentially raised him. Aunt May wasn't just his aunt…
She was his mother. The mother that he never had.
"Where is she?" Peter asked, but the only response he got was silence. He clenched his fists, before shouting out, "I SAID WHERE IS SHE?!" These were the cries of a broken man, inside and out. Even for Spider-Man, even for Peter Parker, there's only so much that one man can take before he reaches his limit.
Jubilee pointed in the direction to where Aunt May's body was. Peter ran towards his now lifeless aunt and knelt down to her level, holding her close to him. His tears were blending in with the rain as they all dropped onto Aunt May. The rest of the X-Men looked on in sadness, not being sure on how to help Peter in this situation at all.
"I'm sorry... I'm sorry... I'm so sorry... I'm so sorry..."
These were the apologetic words of a defeated man.
"Tragedy. What else can I call it? What more needs to be said? The damage. The destruction. You saw it with your own eyes. When will people wake up and realize that everywhere Spider-Man goes, chaos and calamity ensue? Everything Spider-Man touches comes to ruin. And we, the innocents, are left to pick up the pieces. I do not know what's going to happen to him, nor do I know what's going to happen to mutants, but after it was confirmed that the X-Men and Spider-Man were the ones responsible for New Jersey's destruction, I now feel like we're on the brink of war. I believe it shouldn't come to this, but I don't make the rules. That's President Kelly's job, and whatever he decides to do will surely have a major impact on our world's future."
"This has been J. Jonah Jameson reporting live from The Daily Bugle. Goodnight, and may God help us all."
